I appreciate you going to the effort of replicating Chino's beard and haircut.
Now THAT is accurate, holy moly well done Owen!
That vocal effect and chain sounded spot on, cool stuff 👍🏻
Damn dude you exceeded in this video. Well done!
Dude… RESPECT ✊🏾
Thanks man!
I know that the band has gotten popular with the Zoomers thanks to Tiktok memes but they always ignore the first 2 albums and those are where is at for me!
I am a zoomer and people think I listen to deftones for girls. But I really just listen to it because I like the heavy parts of songs and stuff bloody cape and battle axe
Actually that’s not true they mostly talk about atf is what I’ve noticed
Quite the opposite, the first 3 albums are the most talked about by zoomers, its the latter albums like gore, ohms and diamond eyes (except for sextape) that are left out
Those early Deftones records were so formative on my playing. Loved that you did this video spotlighting that Steph Carpenter tone
God bless you man, keep'em coming if you can as we know doing these videos takes a huge effort! Hope the nipper is well too!
So awesome for someone to finally covered my favorite era of Deftones! Bravo! Also instead of hammering on for the verse you can see Stephan bends the octave notes like a half step. I have the Urlich IR pack that he created or Adrenaline.
Yeah I think I did the bend on one or two. Well spotted though.
@@CIRCLEOFTONE I noticed later on. Awesome Channel!
Thank you for playing Exodus!
Great job Owen! You've got a great collection of gear mate. Salutes from Québec!
Spot On Mate !!!! Very Noice, very noice.
That natural finish guitar you're using is sweet. 🤘
I love your recreations. This is awesome. Even that Ozzy tune you did sounded saucy. KEEP EM COMING!
More to come!
Cool!!!
ur a mad scientist man!
I think you nailed this one I would of liked to hear the vocals on it👍
please do seether one day.
You're pretty much dead on, Kudos Brother.
One thing I did notice in Stephen's live rig on the Around The Fur era was a Marshall JMP-1 along with the ADA & SPX90.
The SPX90 alone is friggin' awesome, It's turned up on so many albums in so many contexts.
Cheers Man!
I built a damn near identical rig back in early 2000s just like his and it was awesome. Had two 100/100 mono blocks and a JMP-1. Never got the SPX90 and I know he used an ADA earlier on Adrenaline. I did have the Intellifx but never got the crazy rack delay he had TC Electronics 2290 he had.
@@DaveThomson
That good Sir, Would still be a bitchin' rig even today!
Can you do a full killswitch engage cover? That was so sick dude omg. I need more
Thanks man. The longer version is here ruclips.net/video/HNzmnVcy47I/видео.htmlsi=VhWIbcZmtOuMQh4B

Still have the ESP See-Thru Green SRC 6 string signature guitar. Had the black version with the white bindings but sold it (regret). I also had his first LTD baritone 607b, sold that as well.
Do something for the band Hum. Amazing guitar sounds
As much as I appreciate finding these types of vids to get some insite, my one complaint is that the most important part is always missing… what speakers are in the cab…
You did it! Man, when you hit the chunky part I lost it. Nice work!
I have a couple of ADA preamps (an MP1 and 2 MP2's) around for a reason. They are a time machine, as well as a key to some serious guitar and bass sounds. I like that split modulation trick with the Yamaha FX unit. Very cool. Great video, Owen. Thanks, Brother!
Glad you liked it man. Wish I still had mine.
I wish you could’ve added chi Cheng’s bass tone, especially from around the fur.
I'd love to know
Does anyone know which settings did Stephen Carpenter used for the Boss FZ-2? Great video btw, you really really nailed the tone
Have you seen the portion of Soul On Fire where (We Like) Mike Marciano is talking about "the old Yamaha unit" he and Josh Silver used to get the Bloody Kisses/October Rust sound?? I'm almost positive they used the same patch in the SPX90 but kept it subdued in the mix so they could layer things without the width getting out of hand. He and the band referred to the effect as "adding fur" to the sound.
No I did see that but I used it on my Praise of Bacchus cleans.
On a more serious note: I'm sure this will make you want to bullwhip me out of your comment section, but the closest I've got to playing an MP-1 is downloading a Kemper profile of one after reading it's what was used on ATF.
I was trying to recreate the tone using everything else I had (real amps, okay? Mainly my Marshall JVM) and even exactly matching the EQ curve using stems/match EQ and it just was not doing it at all. Using the MP-1/Kemper absolutely /nailed/ it perfectly to the point I couldn't tell the difference between my recording and the stem.
Obviously a Kemper is not the real thing, but what I noticed especially was the MP-1 profile brought this incredible smoothness and compression to the sound, almost like it drastically improved my playing. It's especially noticable on songs like "My Own Summer" where there's a lot of choppy playing.
Kemper is a good option because essentially the mp-1 is solid state. It has a Tube but it's a bit snake oily when it comes to being direct. My point with Kemper etc is they have a good impact for the first few seconds but long term they are flat compared to an mp-1 with a 100 watt tube section making speakers struggle. You also get authentic feedback like in Shut It etc and can't get that with a Kemper direct. I don't doubt it that you got closer than me haha. Mine was way off.
Your getting damn good on that 6 string.. I remember subscribing when you started the channel and your guitar was a little rusty :)
I've gone backwards man. Haha.
Apparently the secret sauce to the modern deftones tone is recording in a flat earth 😉
When Harambe died, we entered a new timeline so we very well could be on a flat realm.
Any plans to do something on Children Of Bodom? I recently got another guitar(LTD Arrow 1000) so I put my other guitar in drop c to learn some of their stuff, but I can't quite get the sound. I don't have much bass going and lots of upper mids and highs, yet it still sounds somewhat muddy(same guitar and pickups in standard don't)
He runs his gain on his amp very low and uses a passive emg with a gain boost. He also has a boss chorus but no boost pedal in front of the amp. Im assuming you're using the arrow in its stock form with the emg 81. Turn your gain down pretty low and just tweak your bass and mids
@@stevenhirsekorn3444 I'm not using the Arrow, I'm using a Rhoads with passive ceramic pickups(also tried alnico) and my gain isn't very high, less than 75% of max, and with the same gauge strings he used. Can you understand my confusion better now?
It sounds fine in standard with that guitar or the Arrow with the 85, just drop c is off. It still sounds fine for other stuff, just that crisp clear sound he had isn't there(specifically the sound on Are You Dead Yet, In Your Face and Hellhounds On My Trail as they're the only ones I know currently)
@Ayyem you want your gain probably at like 10 oclock .he does not use much gain at all. His percieved amount of gain comes from doing alot of tracks.
@@stevenhirsekorn3444 How did he use the preamp boost?
@Ayyem its an onboard emg gain boost, it has 20ish db of boost. And I think he has some midboost.
should have @9:08 as the NEW Circle Of Tone INTRO FOR EVERY VIDEO....!!!!
it was gold and i swear its hilarious as, a good way to set the tone for each video since we are the vanilla sausage gang!
i felt like this video was good, but the overall drum sound for around the fur was massive, and the cymbals were very abrasive, and i always fell like unless your working with real acoustic drumkit samples on an electric drumkit or a daw, i always can tell the difference cause they are lifeless compared to a real acoustic drumkit... thats my only issue with this, i found it to be to small sounding of a overall mix, the guitars were dead on, but even then Stephen does bends for every part of the song, for flavour.
the bass tone in around the fur was hugggggeee... so i felt like this mix was only dead on with the guitars, the bass and drums were kinda way off to be honest, and i know for a fact Owen from circle of tone does it right every time.... ive heard him even nail the mixes with alice in chains and thats a impossible band to get the guitar tones even close.... (every other youtube video on alice tones from other ppl are wayyyyyyy off...)
Yeah the drums etc are vanilla sausage. I hear ya on the bends.
What songs does he use the Hyper Fuzz on? Settings
I thought he only used the boost setting on the fz-2
Yeah that's in the video
Around the fur was the Marshall jmp preamp. He was using it live even before recording. Now he is back again using the Marshall Preamp.
Nah he used those on the tour directly after. Direct quote from Stephen:
Around the Fur?
"I had my ESP signature model, and back then I was using Seymour Duncan pickups. I had JBs installed in my guitars. My amps, I was using the ADA MP-1 preamp and a Marshall 9200 power amp. That was the first time I switched to a power amp; previously I was using two separate Marshall heads-two 100-watt JCM 800s."
@@CIRCLEOFTONE Interesting. He sure made it sound great then. Around the fur is by far the best work they have. The cabs were the standard marshall with 75?
Watched all the ads
Thanks man.
I always considered Deftones archetypal NuMetal (just one of the few non-shit NuMetal bands).
Also don't stop singing. Those Killswitch and Beatles vocals were epic.
I'm sorry the channel is not doing too well. To be honest you missed the mark on this one a bit but you'll vocal chain sounds spot on
I said in the video that I could not recreate it as I didn't have the gear. The info was right though.
What song are you playing at the start please?
Be Quiet and Drive
👍
@@Hoscitt thanks :)
is the yamaha 100 wet?
I think so. Center is dry with the Yamaha dual outs panned left and right 100% wet. So it is 3 tracks. Preamp gain and DBX comp on all of them
8:46 always sad when RUclips pulls that crap. I thought it was a great video for whatever that's worth
Yeah honestly I don’t know what the point of the site is if this isn’t it. Straight up, most musicians playing is covers. And you don’t move forward without growing a channel. And if you have to use your own material to do so, it simply won’t exist. So RUclips ensures that their platform cannot be a place where you get discovered as a player or artist.
They really forgot what made them great at the beginning. Just like so many things.
Flexing rad 80s style S type things the crackle tokai is the shiiiiiiiiitttt!
So you’re saying when Chino started playing guitar the songwriting suffered lol ?
Two of my favorite nu metal songs ever came from record executives wanting a single
F that
Back to school, mini maggot pink maggot whatever I had to buy two copies of the White Pony because I thought I thought Chino was taking about me smoking cigarettes and sipping vodka
10:36 I said the opposite. That Tokai is a beast. It's based on an old Rand guitar that Vivian Campbell used in a Whitesnake vid haha
@@CIRCLEOFTONE I remember seeing a video where Stephen was kinda complaining about Chino playing guitar because Steph was in some dropped tuning this would’ve been after 2003 by the way Stephen has an incredible guitar tone on that self titled album especially considering how low he was tuning. Anyway he was saying he was in a dropped tuning and Chino would be standardish or something. I love the Deftones and I especially appreciate their approach to doing covers, but those first three albums are special even as different as the White Pony sounded compared to the first two it’s amazing. Most of the really great albums from the 90s did the one song into another song really well where does one start and another end thing that I didn’t appreciate back then but I sorely miss albums as in a one 25-60 minute piece of material. I’m with you on DAW perfectly time aligned stuff sucks all the R&R right out of it.
I can give you a huge reason their new stuff isn't as good as the first 3. This is simple to me.
Down tuning.
They go down after every record. And now they're SUPER low. Carpenter seems to have lost the ability to do the melodic thing he used to have because of it.
Btw... I'm not saying you can't write nice melodic shit while tuned down. But the lower HE goes the more he falls into chugging which loses that ethereal quality they had. Chino can't do it all by himself.
This was a great video man.
Very true. Thats exactly what Ohms was missing, the ethereal quality that make them so unique. Hopefully working with Dan on the next album brings that back
Wait. They were just ripping off smashing pumpkins the whole time?!?!?!?!
Actually it's Everlong by Foo Fighters.
Don't have the Hyper Fuzz? Buy the 25€ Behringer clone!
Edit: that Killswitch video definitely didn't show up in my feed, and I didn't notice it in my notifications either
I have that thing. Haha. Nice tip.
Not your best. 😂
Not hating! Your breakdowns are usually pretty fucking dialled in. ❤
