  • This is one of the best drills Makita ever made and was one of the best drills available on its time has an extremely powerful motor that really sucked down the batteries unfortunately this was during the era of makita's nickel metal hydride batteries which would always fail and they ended up going to lithium-ion after this . .

I love and still use my Makita 14.4v 6337D drill. Excellent chuck. It is not a replacement for my corded drill but a perfect supplement. All of my 14.4v Impacts and drills are 20+ years old now and still in use everyday. I get new-old-stock batteries from Amazon. I plan to skip the lithium battery stuff and wait for whatever comes along after lithium.

Love hearing about this era of tools, right before the age of modern cordless. It’s quite interesting. 🍻🍻

They do sell new version of this 3 speed Makita , models DHP 451 Hammer drill , DDF 451 drill , with brushes , so less electronics that can fail .

I have the 8444 MXT with the hammer function and to this day it's still in use. I don't use it at work anymore because it's a Brontosaurus, but it get used at home for a lot of hobby work. It's just too good to throw away still. Same with my Dewalt 954 14.4 drill. I bought new generic batteries for both drills.

I have an 8444 as well and love it! I run modern Makita 1820 batteries on it with one of those plastic adapters and it works fine on them, I don't want to burn it up with anything that supplies more current. I use the generic batteries on my 14.4V Makitas and they are satisfactory. My XPH07 does the dirty work now.

the problem with nicd and nimh batteries is that they did not have a discharge protection circuit but they were good batteries in the past.

I now run my 14.4v makita with 18v li-ion. Cheap 18v adapter with some cutting to fit the drill. Works great. Keeps that drill in service. Voltage difference is peanuts for typical duty.

I dropped one of these off a scaffolding and broke the whole nose off it. It was a great drill at the time though.

Haven't you been able to get spare parts? I am amazed what you still can get even for old machines.
It also all depends how it lands... Dropped a LXT Circular saw from Makita from 3rd floor scaffolding, bouncing all around landing on the concrete floor. In my mind I was already thinking how much a new one was and if I have enough in in my account. The battery casing was a bit offset and battery has come loose, but it all snapped back together. Still using it 4 years later.
      Luck helps a lot :-)

Great Teardown on the drill and gearbox..yep i own 2 and as a diy been great for me for 15odd years and never used genuine battery only aftermarket all up 5batterys so far..yes the the gearbox issue is real bit hard to get into 2nd but still work aok, and battery contacts inside bottom drill corrode but bit of sandpaper and bend contacts..wondering what would be modern day replacement for these GEMS? i been looking at Makita DHP486 or 485 but is 2speed..

делаю сборку данного инструмента. Разобрал успешно, но теперь невозможно собрать и настроить 3 скорости. Этот шуруповерт я купил для хобби, что бы разбирать редуктор

I have one of these. I know that after the pod 14.4v nimh era, makita came out with a lithium Ion battery that looks like their 18v battery. You can buy that new style 14.4 v battery and get a battery adapter to make it work on the older 14.4 to make it work on this drill. I also wonder what would happen if I put 18v on this.

I loved the older Makita tools. I have a first gen lithium ion 10.8v drill and impact that has and still impresses me. Its light and small but has built decks and privacy fences. It's too bad they did't build a conversion battery for these older, well built NiMh tools. I lost count of the Craftsman sets I threw out annually due to bad batteries, chargers, or both. I hate disposeable tools, that Makita looks very stout inside. Too bad about the batteries.

I had a craftsman 19v. Drill years ago around the year 2000....it was basically new....built a homemade trailer with it n after we finished it it died. In the garbage it went and went out n bought a blue ryobi kit

I hated to throw mine out. Literally every year for at least 12 years. The kits were stacking up with no real cure in sight. They worked perfectly until the battery/charger issues. Every year a slightly new design so nothing old worked with the new. For me, no more Craftsman or any other non-Makita, DeWalt, or Milwakee will do.

My father had it too, the charger and the batterys died he threw him at the "non used materials" room. I did repack it with lithiums and suprised him with it, he was very happy to see his old friend working again :)

Great Video. However, I took apart gear ass'y on Makita 6339D and found all gears looked great. I think problem with my drill must be in the clutch. Now, my problem is that putting the gear ass'y back together is just too confusing for me to do without youtube help. Would you ever consider doing a video of putting the gear ass'y back together. And maybe a teardown of clutch ass'y and troubleshoot that??
