I feel Makita only still makes a few 14.4V machines because they don't want to piss off people who bought into 14.4V a lot. In Japan they do the most 14.4V equivalents of 18V tools, but in Europe you see less and less. You save almost no weight vs 18V and 12V tools have improved to a point where 14.4V is pretty much obsolete.

Hitachi had (still on Hikoki in Japan) that too. 14.4 would fit 18v, but not the other way around. I remember using the smaller battery on the 14.4v as a sales pitch in the 2000s; lighter, no pointy front and works on any 18v tool. 🙂

What a great and informative and interesting Video. And I learned something! I fully agree with you, and just wonder why the heck MAHKeeta didn’t include that type of gauge on the LXT platform. Probably the same reason there is nothing larger than 6.0 Ah on the 18 Volt? *sarcasm*.
Really surprised the 14.4 would fit, and work, on the LXT tools! I would have guessed makita would have made it incompatible, like they did with the ‘Star/ non Star’ batteries?
One of the best drills I ever had, was a NiCd 14.4 cordless drill, back in the day. And they were made in Buford, Georgia, in the USA. And people would come up and want to borrow it on a jobsite. I purchased it shortly after it was rereleased. Great drill.

The majority of my Makita 14.4v batteries are before the battery guage but are still going strong.
Most of my 14.4v tools will not accept genuine Makita 18v batteries but do accept clone 18v batteries. The brushed tools don't like the extra voltage and smell like they are burning out the motor. However all my brushless 14.4v tools work with no issues.
I have migrated many of my tools to 18v now due to the problems of sourcing 14.4 batteries in the UK. Also, if they are available they are more expensive than the 18v.
I prefer 14.4v when using my impact driver, drill and small rotary hammer, as they are lighter and easier to use while up a ladder. However the extra grunt from the 18v batteries is welcomed for most of my other tools.

Green lights are definitely better on a bar gauge. I can easily read them on my Metabo HPT (Hikoki) MultiVolt batteries, in strong light, versus red lights. All the newer laser levels are using green lights.

Metabo also offers 14.4v...only an entry-level series, but still. I myself still have my beloved BS 14.4 LT Compact...which at the time - in 2006 - differed from the most powerful LTX series only in a slightly weaker electric motor. Otherwise, a really high-end machine...impulse mode, LED-light, electronic!!! torque clutch😲, metal Rohm head, one-handed operation of gear change👍 - lever on the left and right side of the machine, ALU housing of the gearbox and 43mm euro-mount for the handle, removable head and shaft that has a hex hole for a bit-s... control of each battery cell already on the machine, not only on the charger... a real high end machine. Just in case, I bought a new electric motor because it still has brushes...so that it will work for many more years....by the way, I still have four newer 18v machines, but this one is still very close to my heart.

Always amusing when people think they know what they are talking about and leave comments without watching the video leaving them looking rather foolish.

Any tool batteries from any company. Never seen a battery that has a bank of red lights that turn green as it charges.

using other brand tool batteries in other tools loses the safety circuit feature. adapters might work but theyll end up destroying the tool and batteries both
