I went from getting around 2 hours of sleep at night to sleeping through the night in a couple of nights. Finding out about paradoxical insomnia was the thing that fully resolved my insomnia. Knowing there was a possibility that I actually was getting more sleep than I thought totally undercut my anxiety about sleep. In the middle of the night I’d just think ‘maybe I am actually asleep’ so I stopped monitoring my awareness and that relaxed me. Anxiety and insomnia gone in literally a couple of nights. Hope this helps anyone else out there with this issue! God bless.
I feel like a get no sleep, but I can recall vivid dreams. So I know I'm sleeping. Just seems like it's not restful. I think I need to convince myself I have slept and instead of the opposite. I hope I can return to normal soon.
I’ve had this for a week straight, excessive worrying about the future and problems led to my insomnia. It feels as if I’ve lost the ability to sleep. I don’t feel like I sleep and when I try to sleep it feels like I’m conscious the whole time. I wake up a few hours later and feel bad about not sleeping. But then later my family tells me I was snoring a bit. Last night I feel like I didn’t sleep at all but then today I felt better and more active then days where I thought I did get sleep. The more we worry the worst it gets. It’s scary how my brain doesn’t tell me I’m sleeping anymore. But I know I have to live like this until it passes or learn to live like this forever. I’m glad I found your channel. I’m watching all the vids

I often read and hear that acceptance and stoicism are the answer to anxiety and lack of sleep and also can quieten tinnitus. But life struggles always seem to prevent me from doing so as I get triggered so easily. Much of this appears to be related to past trauma. I've tried CBT and medication and neither of them have helped much. Anyhow knowing that I should not struggle to sleep but instead just accept that I will sleep eventually when the body decides to do so gives me some comfort at least.

Insomnia Coach Thanks. I have been making improvements each week according to my sleep diary so this is very very encouraging. I just increased my sleep window by 20 minutes and it’s going well so far. Thanks again.

At least trying to be, and since i wan to to pursue basketball i worry about height a lot. so i sort of obsess and worry a ton about sleeping, and sleeping on time. The worst part is i dont even know if i even slept which really fuels the worry which sucks a ton. I only experienced this the past few nights but decided to comment this vid on my experience to get some proper insight from a pro
Just as we can't control our height, we can't control our sleep - and, since you recognize that worrying about this only leads to a negative outcome, might it be more helpful to shift focus and attention elsewhere?
@Zombie Eric Harris I don't think we can permanently delete certain thoughts from our brain - if we learn a second language, we don't forget our first language, right? What we can do is practice responding in a different, more workable way. Instead of trying to fight or avoid what's going on in our minds, we might practice acknowledging all those thoughts and feelings and allowing them to come and go as they please - we might observe them rather than going to war with them. That way, the thoughts and feelings are still there but now we're not making things even more difficult by engaging in a struggle with them.
Hi Sir; My problem is about every 3 to 4 months Never sleeps during the day or night, even if he sleeps 2-3 hours sleep is deep not thin Again the dream continues. There is no sense of sleep in the eyes. I work a lot every day. Even the body does not feel weak What is the symptom of any disease please Answer me!
How come some nights I know I sleep great and feel well rested and other nights I feel like I hardly slept at all and feel awful the next day but my partner says they heard me lightly snoring?
This is likely down to hyperarousal, but it's impossible to know for sure. If you don't feel good during the day it can be really helpful to see if you can do something that will make you feel good! This will help you recognize how much control you have over the quality of your days and help reduce arousal, self-monitoring, and sleep effort!
Thank you for ur kind response sir...i feel that i was not sleeping at all, but people around me say that i was snorring, and in the morning i feel very bad, its from last 2 years...but i dont feel sleepy during daytime..i think my sleep is very light.i dont know but i really want to come out of it...i will try ur sleep restriction therapy sir...thank u.
@@arsalvlog697 It's impossible for me to say for sure but if this person is seen sleeping when they felt they were awake and doesn't feel sleepy during the day, they are probably getting more sleep than they think.
Initially, I got two hours of obvious deep sleep then couldn’t fall back asleep, or at least I thought. When it started, I had no stress; I was living a happy life. Gradually, it turned to a point where I don’t even remember when I fall asleep and during the night and feel like my mind is awake the whole night. My parents tell me I was asleep but I feel awake the whole night. Should I take melatonin? I stopped worrying about my sleep when I found out that I’m actually sleeping but don’t notice it. Still, I’m affected by this sleep misperception.
How do you feel during the day, Mane? Do you feel you have enough energy to be productive and live the kind of life you want to live? If so, then you're probably sleeping just fine - so I am not sure how melatonin would help. With that being said, I would suggest discussing your concerns with your doctor.
You are describing a situation very similar to me bro haha. Almost no stress and happy life, I had an anxiety episode though some months ago which was “ cured “ even though I don’t sleep, and although I am certain I am awake, I am almost not tired during the day even though I think I might feel some brain fog and very slight feeling in my head.
Hello dear, This feeling is very bad and very tired and makes me depressed. I’m really depressed and frustrated, please anyone tells me if they fixed this bad situation please any hope
Hi Insomnia Coach, I would like to ask the following questions I’m not too sure if I’m suffering from paradoxical insomnia but I wake up and feel as if I’ve never slept, does this mean I’ve slept? It feels like I have been day dreaming since I remember everything I day dreamed. Is it possible that I have gotten sleep even though I wake up without the usual feeling (sleep inertia)?
It's impossible to say for sure. Sometimes you might not have got any sleep, and sometimes you might have got some sleep. What I can say is that the body will always generate, at the very least, the minimum amount of sleep we need. That might not happen on individual nights, but over days, weeks, months, and years, it will always generate "enough" if given the opportunity to do so.
i've had this very often but my scalp would always start hurting in the morning and increased hair loss would follow. if i was really sleeping, why would my hair fall out?
Hello! I started having some sleep problems about a month ago. It started with a night in which I felt like I haven’t slept at all but I know I did because I was dreaming. Since than it got worse.. So I go to bes around 10-11 and after about 2-3 hours I just open my eyes and see that time has passed but not sure if I slept. And after that I get these “short sleeps” (~1hour) in which I feel kind of asleep but kind of awake at the same time, but I’m dreaming a lot and also when I wake up after this 1 hour I feel sweaty. And this keeps going on all night, and I’m not sure if I get any sleep or what is going on.. Is this stress and hyperarousal or could it be ffi?
It sounds as though your sleep might be a bit fragmented - how much time do you usually allot for sleep/spend in bed at night? If you are spending a lot more time in bed compared to your average nightly sleep duration, that might help explain the wakefulness you're experiencing.
Hi martin can this also apply to not getting restorative deep sleep but maybe say getting 3 hour or 4 hours of light sleep but getting up feeling like you never slept at all for weeks and months. Ie can you have paradoxical insomnia ut also insomnia where you actually do take longer to fall.asleep or wake up eary
Hmmm, you know I don't think the label we use matters all that much - it's something that can end up being a bit of a distraction! If we feel as though we aren't sleeping - but know we are getting three or four hours of sleep - then that could be a symptom of fatigue, which is common among people with insomnia. Heightened fatigue is often related to the mental struggle associated with insomnia, and the activities we choose to do (or not do) during the day.
A few days ago, I was tired and fell asleep around 12Am but kinda felt like I was "awake" until 4Am but I did manage to sleep and dream. Could the issues be also loud noises? Cause there are frogs squeaking in our home at midnight. But besides that I‘m totally fine.
Brother I've been struggling with insomnia since I was 23.. im now 27 years old... I go nights without sleeping because I worry about not sleeping then when I do sleep.. it seems as if I haven't slept but yett I remember dreams lol...... im like I I sleeps at all yet I had dreams.... is it possible to dream while you're awake? I really have struggled for awhile now. I'm a Christian and I believe it's demons bothering me
Well, I think we can daydream - but we are usually aware that we are awake when we daydream. If dreams happen at night, when you are in bed, then it's quite likely that you were asleep.
Martin I have severe insomnia I can't sleep even with sleeping pills honestly I hated all the medication that I'm taking I don't feel the urge to sleep I can stay 4 days without sleep I can't stop thinking about sleep I tried exercising but I couldn't fall asleep my body is very tired yet my mind doesn't seem to shut off I am living hell right now it's been 2 months since I slept well my sleep problem began with health anxiety now I can't stop thinking about my health and sleep anytime I close my eyes my mind keeps thinking about when I'll lose consciousness which makes me very anxious I think that medication doesn't solve this problem plz help me to overcome this problem before September because I'll be back to university and I'll need to be physically active I don't have money to pay for your course can you please help me for the love of God I'll never forget you if you managed to help me get rid of my problem permanently please those thoughts and that insomnia made me very depressed and I don't want to feel like that I'm only 19 I still need to fulfill my goals plz help me I feel very sick because of this problem thank u :/
Sorry to hear about your struggle with sleep. Do you feel as though you would get absolutely no sleep without taking medication? If so, how accurate do you think that thought is? When you experienced four days without sleep, was that four days without even one minute of sleep? What happened after the fourth day, did you sleep then? We never lose the ability to sleep, but worrying about sleep can definitely make sleep more difficult! What do you think you might be able to do to reduce the amount of time spent thinking and worrying about sleep during the day?
I became afraid of sleep my mind doesn't forget sleep it thinks about it 24h/24 since 2 months whenever I close my eyes the thought of when will I sleep pops up in my mind I became sick of it I feel like a dead man I miss those days when I never thought about how sleep occurs I urge you please help me get rid of this vicious cycle that I failed miserably to overcome it my life is a mess now I feel very sick I tried everything I can't distract myself I always think about sleep automatically
I think I have/had this to a degree, I would lie in bed and think of stuff and some of said thoughts were so outlandish/random that I’m also convinced it was a dream XD Another thing I noticed was how fast time went, one minute it was 1:00 and then it would be 3:30 and whilst I don’t think I slept i probably got some light sleep in between Now I simply don’t look at the time, until my alarm goes off…
@@InsomniaCoach in all honesty it might be the biggest factor in my recovery, instead of gauging the metrics and time I’ve been asleep. I don’t look at the clock and base the night on how comfy/calm I am and how I feel in the morning 🙂 And I reckon I get about 6-7 good hours of sleep doing do 👍
Hello! I have a question. I'm a typical night owl. I laid in bed last night from 1:00 and then as soon as I get up to use the bathroom it's 3:15. Then at around 4:00, I go back to bed and closed my eyes(without tossing and turning or getting up to use the bathroom) and within an hour, I look at my phone and it's 5:14. My eyes appear to be okay. They're not bloodshot and I don't feel that tired. Could this be shallow sleep? I don't recall dreaming a whole lot last night.
It's impossible to say what type of sleep you're getting without taking an overnight sleep study that measures your brainwaves. Ultimately, though, this doesn't matter all that much because sleep architecture is something the body takes care of all by itself and is something we cannot control. You might find it helpful not to check the time during the night since this often heightens arousal and makes it harder to fall back to sleep. I hope this helps!
Hi, please help me. I have barely slept all week I lost 3 nights sleep then had 2 nights of max 3 hours of broken sleep then 2 nights of no sleep again. I’m beyond exhausted. My sleep anxiety was fuelled by google (big mistake) scared of ending up with hallucinations or worse & now I can not sleep due to anxiety & pressure. I read 2 people ended up being put in a physc ward 😨😭 it terrifies me! Any help to debunk this or lesson this worry? I’m desperate for sleep. I have an underlying heart condition so this lack of sleep is not helping that either. Xx
Great question! The answer depends on your own individual sleep requirement. So, for example, if you require six hours of sleep this would suggest you need around 18 hours of prior wakefulness (24 - 18 = 6). I hope this helps!
It's completely up to you how you choose to implement a sleep window, Ranjeet! You might find this overview helpful: insomniacoach.com/sleep-restriction-therapy/
I don't think I've come across "excessive REM sleep" before - the body usually does a good job managing sleep architecture all by itself. Was that a medical diagnosis?
Relaxation techniques can be really helpful for promoting relaxation! Relaxation techniques can lower arousal and this can be helpful when it comes to reducing hyperarousal and perhaps sleep state misperception, too. Just bear in mind that the goal of relaxation should only be relaxation - and relaxation is a skill that requires practice! If we make sleep the goal of relaxation, we make relaxation very difficult!
Hello dear, This feeling is very bad and very tired and makes me depressed. I’m really depressed and frustrated, please anyone tells me if they fixed this bad situation please any hope
Could this be linked to sleep inertia? I just read that hitting the snooze button, makes you start a new sleep cycle (= 90minutes), so when you get out of bed after (multiple) snoozes (10 or 45 minutes) your body/brain stays in 'sleep mode' for up to 4h. So you feel basically groggy and sleep deprived even when you did got enough hours of sleep. Do you think this is true? What if your alarm wakes you at the start of a new cycle, even when you don't hit snooze, you would also get this sleep inertia, right? Do you have tips/videos on HOW (not when) to drag yourself out of bed (without snoozing)? I love your advice on sleep window/restriction and totally believe it will work. But I just can't get out of bed at the target time, I'm always too tired and sometimes just managed to fall asleep 2h before alarm. My brain also doesn't seem to have any capacity for discipline or motivation being half conscious/comatose when my alarm goes off. Thanks for your super helpful videos!!
It could be - I try to keep an open mind with anything related to sleep! I think with sleep inertia, the main symptom is grogginess, a sense of sluggishness, difficulty concentrating or remembering things, and a slightly depressed mood for an hour or two upon starting the day. As you mentioned, hitting the snooze button in the morning isn't usually helpful since it can prolong this sleep inertia and it can be quite disruptive to the body clock. In terms of getting out of bed at the same time each day, this video might be what you are looking for: ruclips.net/video/f1DPuRScZfg/видео.html
Thanks for sharing, Pat! If only there was a cure for black eyes! Perhaps we might still be able to live a meaningful life, even in their presence, though?
Hello dear, This feeling is very bad and very tired and makes me depressed. I’m really depressed and frustrated, please anyone tells me if they fixed this bad situation please any hope
@@user-mp9lq3xv5b Yeah i have managed to cure my insomnia, some days are bad but the majority are good. I have mostly done this by letting myself go and having a tight schedule that tires me for bed time, with time you will manage to prevail. The key is perseverance and not attach badd feelings to the bed.
My greatest fear is that if I don't get enough sleep I will become ill or I will die soon. So I pay so much attention to sleep that there are nights I can't sleep. As soon as I'm driffting off I get this heart racing, then I worry that I won't be able to sleep and that it will cause some serious health issues. And of course I get nervous and can't sleep until about 5 or 6 a.m. what can I do?😔
It sounds as though exploring that belief might help lower worry - and the good news is that chronic insomnia has not been found to cause any health problem whatsoever. So, now you have one less thing to worry about - and if that was your only worry, now you have no worries!

Hi Sir;
My problem is about every 3 to 4 months
Never sleeps during the day or night, even if he sleeps
2-3 hours sleep is deep not thin
Again the dream continues. There is no sense of sleep in the eyes. I work a lot every day.
Even the body does not feel weak
What is the symptom of any disease please Answer me!
I have this but also I feel pretty terrible everyday. I don’t know what to do? I miss good sleep.
Did you get any ideas from the video, Sara?
Thank you for ur kind response sir...i feel that i was not sleeping at all, but people around me say that i was snorring, and in the morning i feel very bad, its from last 2 years...but i dont feel sleepy during daytime..i think my sleep is very light.i dont know but i really want to come out of it...i will try ur sleep restriction therapy sir...thank u.

@@arsalvlog697 It's impossible for me to say for sure but if this person is seen sleeping when they felt they were awake and doesn't feel sleepy during the day, they are probably getting more sleep than they think.
@@InsomniaCoach thanks for reply here is my question sir can insomnia lead other health issues such as diabetic etc?
@@arsalvlog697 There is no evidence that chronic insomnia causes any health problem whatsoever.
You are amazing ❤

Hi Insomnia Coach, I would like to ask the following questions
I’m not too sure if I’m suffering from paradoxical insomnia but I wake up and feel as if I’ve never slept, does this mean I’ve slept? It feels like I have been day dreaming since I remember everything I day dreamed. Is it possible that I have gotten sleep even though I wake up without the usual feeling (sleep inertia)?
It's impossible to say for sure. Sometimes you might not have got any sleep, and sometimes you might have got some sleep. What I can say is that the body will always generate, at the very least, the minimum amount of sleep we need. That might not happen on individual nights, but over days, weeks, months, and years, it will always generate "enough" if given the opportunity to do so.
Very helpful Martin! Thank you!
You're welcome, Rodolfo!
i've had this very often but my scalp would always start hurting in the morning and increased hair loss would follow. if i was really sleeping, why would my hair fall out?
How is your sleeping now ? Abd are there days you don't sleep at all and feeling shaking ?
It sounds as though your sleep might be a bit fragmented - how much time do you usually allot for sleep/spend in bed at night? If you are spending a lot more time in bed compared to your average nightly sleep duration, that might help explain the wakefulness you're experiencing.
How is your sleeping now? I have the same problem, and somedays I can’t sleep at all .

@@raissounitarik1567 hello there. How are you feeling now?
Hey Raissouni, how did you fix it?
So relatable 🥺🥺🥺
I think I have/had this to a degree, I would lie in bed and think of stuff and some of said thoughts were so outlandish/random that I’m also convinced it was a dream XD
Another thing I noticed was how fast time went, one minute it was 1:00 and then it would be 3:30 and whilst I don’t think I slept i probably got some light sleep in between
Now I simply don’t look at the time, until my alarm goes off…
Thanks for sharing, Sean! Not checking the time during the night can definitely be helpful!
@@InsomniaCoach in all honesty it might be the biggest factor in my recovery, instead of gauging the metrics and time I’ve been asleep. I don’t look at the clock and base the night on how comfy/calm I am and how I feel in the morning 🙂
And I reckon I get about 6-7 good hours of sleep doing do 👍
@@seanking6184 You're not the first person to tell me that! Thanks for sharing!
Xx

Thanks for your support and kind words!
Can anxiety and panic attacks play roll a paradoxical sleep
Any kind of hypervigilance/hyperarousal might make it harder to recognize sleep when it happens!
How many hours of wakefulness is for sufficent sleep drive?
Great question! The answer depends on your own individual sleep requirement. So, for example, if you require six hours of sleep this would suggest you need around 18 hours of prior wakefulness (24 - 18 = 6). I hope this helps!
Hello sir...can i keep my sleep window between 2am to 8am..i usually sleep around 12 am and i dont feel sleepy.
It's completely up to you how you choose to implement a sleep window, Ranjeet! You might find this overview helpful: insomniacoach.com/sleep-restriction-therapy/
Can u make a video on exessive rem sleep,..is it same as paradoxical insomnia?
I don't think I've come across "excessive REM sleep" before - the body usually does a good job managing sleep architecture all by itself. Was that a medical diagnosis?
is relaxation technique like deep breathing or Meditation helpful in reducing hyperaousal and sleep state misperception ?
Relaxation techniques can be really helpful for promoting relaxation! Relaxation techniques can lower arousal and this can be helpful when it comes to reducing hyperarousal and perhaps sleep state misperception, too.
Just bear in mind that the goal of relaxation should only be relaxation - and relaxation is a skill that requires practice! If we make sleep the goal of relaxation, we make relaxation very difficult!
@Zombie Eric Harris The more we try to make sleep happen, the more difficult it often becomes!
Did you struggle with paradoxical sleep as well?
I do not believe so, Mane!
Hello dear, This feeling is very bad and very tired and makes me depressed. I’m really depressed and frustrated, please anyone tells me if they fixed this bad situation please any hope
Is there a technique or method that the psychiatrist can tell how long you have been sleeping?
I suffer from sleep state misperception
Please help
This is one of the times when a sleep tracking device might actually be helpful!
I believe i suffer from this but i still wake up with black eyes.
Thanks for sharing, Pat! If only there was a cure for black eyes! Perhaps we might still be able to live a meaningful life, even in their presence, though?
