Welshi is an underrated gag. He fills in the Red Shirt bit, he covers the hole James Doohan left as a voice actor in that reunion, and then he replaced a Scot named Scotty while being a Welshman named Welshi. A trifecta gag
I think it's also a combo of a few ST episodes? "Metamorphosis" with the floating cloud that took that ladies body to "be" with Cochrane on the planet. And maybe mixed w/the Horta from "Devil in the Dark" episode? Probably, a few? 🤔🙃
@@loganatori6117 The "Red Shirts" was a Star Trek trope where, in order to avoid killing or really threatening actual characters, threats would typically be shown at the cost of a standard crew member that didn't matter. They were often just random crew members in red shirts Hence, to show that the dust cloud man was a big jerk that could kill people, the writers showed that at the cost of the life of some random new guy in the standard red uniform. A Red Shirt fulfilling the trope
I love the gag at 5:19 that he doesn't _immediately_ put the tape back in, there's a half second where he just holds it. Like he's trying to think if he has a tape that better matches his reaction, but no, this is the best one he has.
For what it's worth, the episodes mentioned by Mellvar as including a fight to the death were: "Arena" (Episode 19, Kirk is transported to a planetoid where he has to fight a Gorn to the death); "The Gamesters of Triskelion" (Episode 46, where Kirk has to fight three "thralls" to the death); '"Spectre of the Gun" (Episode 56, where Kirk, Spock, Scotty, McCoy, and Chekov are forced to refight the Gunfight at the OK Corral as the Clanton gang); and "The Savage Curtain" (episode 77, where Kirk and Spock have a fight to the death where the "good guys" include Abraham Lincoln and Vulcan hero Surak and the "bad guys" are Genghis Khan, Col. Green, Zora, and Kahless). Fry adds Episode 66, "Day of the Dove," where a group of Klingons are transported onto the Enterprise and an alien transforms all of the weapons into swords, seals off most of the ship so that the number of Enterprise crewman and number of Klingons are equal, and has them fight for all eternity. Given that Nimoy was there, it's kind of surprising that no one mentioned "Amok Time," which was actually parodied in a different episode of "Futurama."
The abraham lincoln reveal in ep 77 was the hardest I've laughed in a long time. Like I'm normally fine with suspension of disbelief for Star Trek but MAN was that outta nowhere!

I can think of 3 reasons. One of them is a meme, the other two, well, on the dvd commentary they were flat out honest about the fact the animators took it as far as they could. Just saying.
I would have thought that since Melvar only knows the tapes, Fry would beat him with meta-knowledge, like for example how the order they were aired in differed from the order they were filmed in, which explains some discrepancies; or things about the actors themselves. But no, it was all encyclopedic knowledge of only the episodes themselves. And that seems made up.
