My Porterfield is placarded "Solo Front Seat Only", which is what I do, never tried to fly it solo from the rear due to that. However I ended up inverted when taxying in 2013 due to a gusty tailwind and a full fuel tank, necessitating a rebuild and new engine. So I now ballast the rear seat just a bit if solo and the wind is brisk or gusty. Helps with the taxying too, which is always problematic due to the light weight, slab sides and big fin. Nice video, Porterfields are fun.

Great video! I’ve talked to a few P-field owners, and most assert that the Collegiate should be soloed from the front seat. Not sure if that would help in your takeoff performance, but it should help the tail wheel get off the ground faster. It should also reduce adverse yaw. Funny to see you flying from the back seat! How's the view forward?

I’ve flown it from both and the back seat is more comfortable for someone of my stature. The view is never great in a taildragger but because the Porterfield is so skinny it’s actually got pretty good forward visibility compared to a J-3 or similar.

Did this plane have A40 when new?

Solo from the rear??? She's a "Skinny Cub," not a Piper Cub! Solo from the front and you hardly have to use the rudder. Solo from the rear and you'll wallow around like your flying the Spirit of St. Louis. Let me know if you need the factory flight manual, what there is of it...I'll email it to Mark.

I’ve done both but the front seat is a bit tight for my height. I’m intrigued by your assessment of the rudder control differences. I’ll have to give the front another try...

Flying from the front is a bit claustrophobic, as the instrument panel is literally a foot away from your face, but after about five minutes, you become acclimated to it. It’s warmer up front, too, with the firewall right there and the window next to your left shoulder. I have to stick my hand out the window to deflect air onto my face in the summer.
