    It’s not hard to see why Prince and Madonna were attracted to each other following their introduction at the American Music Awards in January 1985. Thanks to their individual successes with “Purple Rain” and “Like A Virgin”, they were two of the biggest names in popular music at the time. A union between the headline-grabbing pair was always on track to be pop dynamite. When the collaborative “Love Song” eventually appeared on the March 1989 release of Like A Prayer, Madonna’s marriage to Sean Penn was already on the rocks after less than four years of marriage. Whether autobiographical or not, the lyrics to Like A Prayer’s “Till Death Do Us Part” detailed a relationship marred by verbal and physical violence.
    While reports suggest Madonna’s relationship with Penn was tumultuous from its earliest days, Prince was on hand to offer a little light relief. A couple of days after Penn had punched the wall following his argument with Madonna, Taraborrelli suggests in his biography the Material Girl singer called up Prince. Showing more front than the White House, Madonna told Prince he had to come and patch up the hole, “because you’re responsible for it, after all”.
    There were no two bigger pop stars in the world in 1989 than Prince and Madonna. The Purple One was at a strange point in his career, stuck between the world-conquering pop of his initial style and the harder-edged R&B funk that he would adopt in the ’90s. But Prince was still scoring number one hits, even if it was ‘Batdance’ from the Batman soundtrack.
    Meanwhile, Madonna was about to unleash Like a Prayer on the world, an artistic tour de force that would court controversy and establish her as the biggest pop singer on the planet. When Pepsi pulls out of its multi-million dollar endorsement and you get a public condemnation from The Vatican, you’re operating on another level. But Like a Prayer also contained introspective tracks, chart topping singles, and most exciting of all, a Prince collaboration.
    “We were friends and talked about working together, so I went to Minneapolis to write some stuff with him, but the only thing I really dug was ‘Love Song’.” “He’s very private, you know, and very shy,” she said in Rolling Stone. “He’s great when you get to know him. Charming and funny, in his own way. More than anything, he really comes alive when he’s working.”
    Prince has spoken of a crucial "Dark night of the soul, when a lot of things happened all in a few hours" and described a vision of a vast field with the letters G-O-D hovering overhead. He would refer to that night, Tuesday December 1st as "Blue Tuesday" in the Lovesexy Programme.
    "I suddenly realised that we can die at any moment", he said. "And we'd be judged by the last thing". Prince indicated in the programme liner notes that he realised that the Black Album was a work of hate and that realising it would be wrong. he believed that "Spooky Electric", which can be considered the dark side of his persona or a symbol of Satan himself, convinced him to create this thing of 'evil'. Prince eventually attributed his last minute decision to shelve the black album to god and the 'lovesexy spirit', "the feeling you get when you fall in love, not with a girl or boy but the heavens above"
    At about the same time, Prince summoned Rogers to Paisley Park in the early hours although she was no longer working for him. "I went into the rehearsal room, which is sort of in the middle of the building" she remembers. "It was two in the morning and it was empty. It was dark except for a couple of red canldes and I heard a womans voice say "Are you looking for Prince?". I found out later that the woman was Ingrid Chavez. I said "yes, i'm supposed to meet him here at 2am.". she said "well he's here somehwere". As I came out of the room, I suddenly came face-to-face with him an I'm certain he was high. His pupils were really dilated and he looked unlike I'd ever seen him look before. He looked like he was tripping. He was standing very close to me and he asked "I just want to know one thing, do you still love me?" And I said that I did and that I knew he loved me. He said "Will you stay?" And I said "No, I wont. Goodnight" I headed to the door. It was really scary"

    The Summer of 1988 was the best summer ever! I went to see MJ’s Bad Tour and then Prince’s Lovesexy, a week or so later. Two entirely different shows and different energies. MJ’s audience was wild, people crying, fainting and being carried away, was bizarre!! But it was a DOPE show. Prince’s audience stood to attention, savouring every note and expression, and Cat was incredible. Lovesexy raised the bar - no one was doing shows in a round, until Prince did it. Just groundbreaking! I had shit seats, and thankful that the round stage made the experience whole.

    I thought I was gonna see the Lovesexy Tour at MSG one night which I'd bought tickets to a couple of months before and the Bad Tour at Giant Stadium the next night which my cousin had tickets to. Turns out it was the same night. I chose the Lovesexy Tour because one, I had to see that band after the SOTT movie and two, it was closer to my house. 🤣🤣🤣🤣 I was also in the nosebleeds which I actually enjoyed because I could see everything that was going on. I don't regret my decision in hindsight because I can watch a Bad Tour show anytime yet watching a really good Lovesexy Tour on video is kind of weird with the stage angles.

Because, in Europe he had a chance to work the show so well. So by the time he came to the States. They were a well oiled machine. The fact that Michael and Madonna ,and Prince was touring Europe that year in 1988. The 1958 ICONS.

    I'm tired of all these people who were around him for years playing dumb about Prince's drug experimentation and use. Do you really need to see someone do drugs to see the telltale signs? Like him constantly rubbing his nose during the Controversy tour, or the time he took something from someone in the audience at the Syracuse Purple Rain show? Or the infamous James Brown incident? Or the lyrics to "My Little Pill?" And so on and so forth. I just really resent them playing dumb like that.

    • @jovanreid6782
      @jovanreid6782 2 года назад

      What about the James Brown fiasco makes you think it was drug induced. And exactly what minute and second does Prince take something from an audience member at the Syracuse show? And I never noticed any constant nose-running on the Controversy tour. And how are you so sure "My Little Pill" is written from a personal perspective and not a character or from the perspective of a friend or family member? Don't get me wrong: I believe Prince did dibble and dabble, but I wouldn't be so bold as to be so specific with times and places and events and say I know for a fact.
