    I just checked the Dieppe to Newhaven price for a car + trailer it is £178. I'm off to France in a couple of weeks and the Newhaven Dieppe route seems to be the cheapest. Eg £340 return from Poole to Cherbourg, £151 from Newhaven. £240 return from Poole to Cherbourg with a motorbike and £77 from Newhaven. Worth the extra bit of driving.

    Hi Freddie & Monica, the Renault cars you've seen on the road take part to the "4L trophy" which is made for the French stutents. They drive from France to Marakech to provide school materials to the Moroccan children. fr.wikipedia.org/wiki/4L_Trophy
    Great to watch you travelling, have a nice trip !

    Great to see St Jean De Luz, I stayed there for a fortnight as a teenager with my parents in the 70’s. It was a truly memorable trip as we traveled through France overnight on a car transporter train, not sure as they offer that service any more!

    I stopped using the ferry from UK to France years ago. Now it is the tunnel every time, pick late at night and the prices are reasonable (depending on time of year), plus just 35 minutes crossing time, 45 minute check-in, super fast disembarkation and as you don't leave your car, no expensive eats and drinks. Total no brainer in my opinion!

    To be brief Freddie this and your other vlogs have been outstanding, thoroughly enjoyable and informative.
    So jealous of the weather you've experienced, we've have had to fire up the central heating here in S. Wales in the evening and as I write this on a Sunday morning a news message pops up on my PC saying Britain is hotter than Lisbon today, well it's not here as it's raining and is forecast rain locally for the next few days.
    On another note visiting the towns or villages as you have or on your return for one day/evening is very much as we do as our choice of travel now is cruising, we get a taste of so many different countries and locations, just love it, looking forward to the Norwegian fjords up to the Artic Circle in late August, can't guarantee much sun though?
    Once again thanks to you both for sharing.

    Now i've got my answer, I'm glad you could see with your own eyes the beauty of St Jean de Luz, i was conquered too the first time i came there at the age of 20, born in Britanny, there was a familiar taste of it (atlantic salt) but with something else, spanish probably, or rather a mix of both France and Spain, i love le Pays Basque, i was there the 2nd of May, attempting to finish my crossing of the pyrénean passes but it was still so cold then that i had to give up even before le tourmalet pass, glad you could enjoy the sun and the beach. In case you both decide to spend some time there, don't miss the mountainous part of Pays basque, it's lovely too, different atmosphere, beautiful villages too, i think of st jean pied de port, one amongst many, south-west of France is a region where i could easily live...and probably will someday. Thanks for paying attention and putting in perspective this notion of beauty and space available, at your age, i was unable to see and understand it, it changed, now i see this beauty in its singularity, not everywhere is like that, i can tell now after travelling almost the entire planet, i'm not meaning it's better, just that it exists and deserves a fresh look

    All hail to that tough little Fiat. All the fiat doubters. How long will u keep it 😁. Thank you for all this it brightens up my day and gives me hope. I have driven several times to southern Spain and whilst going south, I have come across a train extending for miles of R4s and 2 CVS all looking like rally vehicles crowded with stickers and spare wheels. On one particular occasion, we stopped in Algeciras and the locals told me that they have organised “raids” to the Moroccan deserts. Truly a fantastic and nostalgic sight. Tough little beasts. All cruising along at 55 -60mph.

    I'm not an expert but one of the secrets to your Fiat's success (mileage, fuel economy, towing capability) could be the fact that it's a manual transmission. I doubt if a CVT or even a traditional slushbox can handle as much workload. Enjoyed this episode as usual.

    • @FreddieDobbs
      @FreddieDobbs  2 года назад +6

      This is a very good point and I completely agree! I was told that the 1.2 engine and manual box is the most simple, basic setup in the Fiat 500 (and also by far the most reliable)

    • @zrx1100zz
      @zrx1100zz 2 года назад +3

      When I first saw how point blank that Fiat was completely overloaded my first thought was there's no way that automatic transmission is going to live in that thing... Sure enough there was a split second in an episode and I saw what appeared to be a manual shifter....that's how they made it back and forth without grenading anything transmission wise😁🥃......🚗_🏍️💼👜💼🧳🧳🎒

    • @DiscoFang
      @DiscoFang Год назад

      The Fiat 500 CVT maybe not but I have a 2008 Mitsubishi Delica D5 with a 2.4L petrol with CVT (same running gear as an Outlander) and I regularly tow around 800kg to 1200kg with the occasional towing of a mini excavator that is 1.6tons all up. The Fiat 500 with manual trans is definitely becoming known as a reliable car and I'm thinking it will be our next second car.

      from the UK but live in the States, all the smaller cars seem to labelled as more commuter orientated vehicles, but drivers may also feel intimidated by the sheer size of the average American Vehicle on the road, compared to these smaller more frugal size vehicles even though they are equally competent of covering high mileages

    Really enjoyed your three road trip 'vids' the thing that really jumps out at me on all of them is the lack of traffic on the roads and amazing scenery, it made me want to throw a leg over my bike and head back to Europe ASAP, looking forward to your up coming European tour on the Bonneville.

    The ferry from Scotland to Northern Ireland cost us £350 for a car and driver and one passenger. Return. 2 hour journey. That was off peak in April. Mental.

    Great trip wrap up Freddie and Monica. I always look forward to Sunday mornings and watching you have way more fun than me. I had to laugh when you said France had so much space. If you want to see space come across the pond to America. It’s a 30 mile ride for me to just get to work each day. And then 30 back. But it’s through some on the most beautiful horse farms you’ll ever see. Your going home videos have made my wife want to run around Europe in a fiat 500. I but I think I would rather do it in that Ferrari Dino 😎. Enjoy being home in the UK. Can’t wait to see the next adventure .

    Your timing is superb. Walking down as you said ‘a beautiful Spanish town ‘ as you passed a garage door covered in graffiti 🤣. I can’t decide if it’s pure Allen Partridge or deliberate comic genius.

    Thank you both for taking us along on your adventures. I now look at the Fiat 500 with new found respect. FIAT may wonder about a sudden surge in demand!
    I loved Freddie's reaction to the cost of the final ferry. May I ask if you considered using the Tunnel?

    You've obviously got a gem of a Fiat 500 (or 1.2) at 44mpg as good as the Bonneville. Sounds like you'd be better transplanting the Fiat engine into the Bonnie frame! And at 190,600 miles it certainly pays to keep that motor running, head out on the highway! Great soundtracks. Fine accoounting there.
