Is Pokemon Legends ZA Mainline or Spinoff?

- Something else thats been on my mind for a while. I'd seen conversation and debates for the last two years now, but with Legends Z-A on the horizon, officially making this a series, I can't help but wonder...

An image TPCi posted in 2021 confirms Legends is mainline
According to the Pokemon company, Crature Inc. and Game Freak, Legend: Arceus is a mainline game (this was already decided in the promotion of the game). And since the game companies and the creator have this opinion, I don't think it needs to be questioned and makes the question bit funny. Because, is not up to the gamers and fans to decide what is the main line and what is a spin-off game.
Whether it's considered a spin-off, a gaiden or whatever, Scarlet/Violet cemented it in the mainline universe/timeline by way of the photos of Laventon in the classroom, the Hisuian forms available in the DLC areas and Perrin.
I literally had that part scripted somewhere and forgot to point it out 😭
I think the best way to tell nowadays whether a game is mainline is whether it can connect to Pokemon Home and you can transfer Pokemon to and from that game. 😂
But can't Pokemon GO also connect to Pokemon home?

That excludes older titles though. In my opinion the best way to tell is if it introduced new Pokémon. And PLA introduced several as well as new forms for preexisting ones.
@@dustinvance243 not really. Gen 3 games can transfer to gen 4 can transfer to 5 can transfer to home.
Gens 1 and 2 on the 3ds can transfer to home.
@@devastatheseeker9967 that's kinda the point though. They can't communicate directly to home. They all have to go through the same check points. And with the 3ds eshop shutdown the check point for every pre gen 8 game is no longer legally obtainable. If you didn't already have bank installed on your 3ds, you can't get it anymore. So the furthest any Pokémon can go is dependent on apps from a store that is no longer functional outside of hacking.
Pokémon directly said it’s mainline. That’s it, lol. The official term is Main Series.

Helping with making a city and building from the ground up houses and tall buildings. That would be a dream come true. Even if it is just virtual.
8:00 I feel like pokemon abilities HEAVILY affects gameplay when it comes to Pokemon at the very least. The only two times abilities weren't a thing in pokemon was the original gen 1 and gen 2 games as well as Pokemon Let's Go. Otherwise, we've had abilities, and they tend to make or break a pokemon in the long run. Did you love using Steelix in Legends Arceus? Well too bad it doesn't have its Sturdy ability which means it's easily screwed by any special attacker.
Also, why the heck did they make bulk up and calm mind the same thing? It now boosts all attacks and defenses instead of doing what they're supposed to do.
All I hope is that the game works fine and they keep the free lancing catching mechanic Legends introduced.
PLA was marketed as a mainline game; the more interesting question for me is whether that means other games that connect to the main series are mainline, like let’s go, gale of darkness, and even stadium
In ways it is. It is like how you can get the Manaphy Egg from the Pokémon Ranger games to bring to the Generation 4 Pokémon games.
You aren't alone. Neither have I seen the leaks. The channels that cover it usually cover (false) rumours, so I tend not to see their videos.
My guess is that Pokémon Legends is a series on its own, but it has been treated as mainline by GF.
Anyways, it might be interesting to discuss historical and abandoned places in pokemon, and what made them so great. Plus, what you'd like to see in future pokemon games in relation to the lore and possible story of a region and how it came to be, etc. Just a thought. 🤔🤨😁
i would be cool with a legends game to go along the main gen games. it could get into some of the older history as we move further in the future. tellin two stories at once basically
Pokemon Legends introduces new Pokemon that then appear in the mainline series and are added to the national dex. Ergo,they're mainline games.
I do think the legends games are mainline games because gamefreak made the legends games and in their existence as a company for Pokemon has only made the mainline games and doesn’t make the Pokemon spin off games. The only spin off game that gamefreak has ever made is Pokemon quest since 1998 the year Pokemon spin off games first began and came out. All the other spin off games have been made by other companies and were behind them. And gamefreak had nothing to do with the development of all of those spin off games besides Pokemon quest. Bdsp is a mainline game remake that is a remake of Pokemon Diamond and pearl which is a mainline game which bdsp was only game made by other company. Just like let’s go is a mainline game and not a spin off game that was also made by gamefreak. Pokemon isn’t the only franchise that has spin off games and mainline games. Halo, Mario, Zelda, and many other franchises that has spin off games and mainlines.
I believe the Pokémon Legends game is a mainline Pokémon game. Despite the fact that they don't feel like it.
But that's what I like about it.
It feels so unique.
And with another one under development, I'm interested in seeing what they have in store for Legends Z-A.
Maybe you have to help construct a city.
Game freak calls them mainline games along with BDSP and let’s go they are all mainline games. It will most likely be the same if Pokémon works makes a games as well down the line so it might be easier to say any Pokémon game made by GF/ILCA/Pokémon works is a mainline Pokémon game.
It definitely needs to be a "wait and see" situation.

People really just don't take what GameFreak officially said is the true definition?
I'd say if anyone still thinks Legends isn't mainline, they either don't give GameFreak a fuck or they simply didn't know this was officially confirmed already.

The official answer is that it's mainline. However, I think that was less to align it with other mainline games...and more to get people to buy it.
For me, it's a spinoff. Although all of the points here are valid, the biggest thing for me is really the actual genre of the game and what the gameplay actually plays out like. I throw the "monster catching" aspect as a defining point away here, because Pokémon Conquest and Pokémon Snap are monster catching games. But no one will argue they're mainline.
All of the agreed-upon mainline games are primarily turn-based RPGs in the key aspect of the games. In trainer battles and catching a Pokémon, your only option is to enter a turn-based battle.
I argue that PLA is as much of a stealth shooter as a turn-based RPG. I go so far as to say it incentivizes you to play it as an _action-based stealth shooter,_ and ultimately leans more in that direction than turn-based battling.
Although you have _many_ of the tools as the agreed-upon mainline games in terms of the turn-based battles, as the video says, battles have been toned down. It's the only progressive game that actively _removes_ held items and abilities for battles.
Whereas the focus of the game is not just "catching them all," but catching them all in high amounts. You _could_ do that via turn-based battle. But you'd have to disregard the most efficient ways of catching a Pokémon (i.e., sneaking up behind one and chucking a Poké Ball at its back) and you'd have to omit many of the Poké Dex tasks which require catching a Pokémon while it's eating. Or sleeping. Or without being noticed. Or while it's in flight.
Not to mention you can't complete the game that way: you have to engage with the action shooting aspect for the Noble battles. You can argue Volo is the final battle. But in order to complete the task you're given at the onset, "Seek out all Pokémon,"
you have to beat Arceus.
And you don't get to take them on only in turn-based battle. You have to aim your reticle at some point, and above all, evade their stages attacks on you, the player.
It's the only mainline game that focuses, in the main action of the game, on a gameplay mechanic that is entirely missing from the rest. Action shooting.
If it's mainline, so is Conquest, in my opinion. At least the battle there is strictly turn-based.
Didn’t watch video, mainline, clicked off. GameFreak, Nintendo, and The Pokemon Company all call it mainline, anything else is cope and/or fanfic.

Mainline, i mean arceus is a prequal to Diamond/Pearl
and ZA is a sequel to X and Y
Main series, but not core. Core games have the mechanics youd expect from llthe typical pokemon game. So kinda main series, but like knockoff main series...

Legends Arceus is a main line game and so is Legends Z-A. Yes they are a different in a way to other traditional games but they still keep aspects that we seen in traditional games. They just another type of main line games.
It’s mainline. I can transfer Pokemon in and out from home. Same applies to let’s go pikachu. If Pokemon post Gen 5 can go in and out of home/ bank, then it is mainline.
To be fair johto is definitely connected to kanto
I consider it a mainline game because the battle mechanics are overall closer to the rest of the mainline games instead of any of the spin-off games.
Also, every list I can find online considers Legends Arceus a mainline game.
I think of them as mainline spin offs, same as Colosseum and XD. They're different, but they play the same, or mostly the same in the case of Legends. I just don't see them as true spin offs

I agree the Pokémon Legends game are actually mainline. The Pokemon Legends Z-A is just as important as the other mainline games in the series.
