I'd imagine it'd be something like LSD dream emulator. The game which starts off a little unsettling and gradually descends into pure insanity. A surreal world made up of pure weirdness that you dare try to make sense of. Weirdly enough there is another Combo game very much like Silent Hill + Witches House called Yomawari Night Alone, it's less abstract but still a powerful game.

There is no meaning for a dot to be at the beginning of the sentence. It'd make more sense if it was as Nitro said, or if it was made like that so it looks like a format, like .exe or .dat, etc.

you hit the nail on the head, Japanese study English concepts in psychology all the time. There is very funny interplay in terms between japanese, english, and German of all languages and this is not coincidence.
Sometimes i found Yume Nikki a pretty dark game, but this... .flow seems a really really disturbing one. Even without any jumpscares or anything like that and that's truly amazing.

Although it's not the most obscure event in the game... That would be an event I like to call the Tea Party, which requires you to eat cake at the Sugar Hole ten consecutive dream sessions. Once you do that, a staircase will be freed up and you can trigger the event. I have NO idea how this would have ever been discovered, except by some guy who just happened to be totally loaded in in- game money and ate at the Sugar Hole way too much as a result.
i prefer to call .flow "yume nikki's sister game". siblings are often similar in some physical aspects but different in personality. yume nikki was more about psychological twisting of the mind, relating to physical trauma. .flow was more about physical horror, which is derived from psychological damage. tl:dr, some ppl did mado the physical bads so she's mentally scarred and sabi is mentally scarred so she does herself and others the physical bads.
I wonder, is Sabitsuki really a bad person on her own, or is it all Rust's influence? The Effects you collect do make you think some dubious things about her personality. It's something to think about.
Most certainly, it's especially evident after certain events near the end of the game. But what I mean is, Sabitsuki showcases traits about herself that make you question her personality and morality even before that. The pistol, the black dress, the gun, the hoodie, psychedelic and the lead pipe are all effects she holds onto even before she changes. Even while initially playing .flow I almost began to become disgusted at her. Then there's that one event with Smile and his Sister at their house.... [SPOILERS] But then are hints that Rust has always been there with the Red Body area, albeit weaker or dormant. Then there's that peaceful music that plays when she's sleeping, where she seems the happiest by far. It's hard to hate her for these things when it seems like none of it was ever truly her fault.
I dunno... I think too much gangrene and blodd loss caused her to be isolated thinking she is a kaibutsu, or a cursed child. And this isolation, combined with the nightmares she’s in, be it if she’s awake or in her subconscious, caused her to be so mad.
The way I see it, Sabitsuki is a patient suffering from a terminal illness. These "dreams" are actually Intensive Care Psychosis, which is essentially a type of fever dream people get while in life-threatening situations. Rust could represent her being on the brink of death, with her deepest memories resurfacing. Edit: Having completed the game, I think I can get more specific and say that Sabitsuki is dying of AIDS. There's a lot of imagery suggesting sexual aspects of her life and perhaps even prostitution - maybe she was having a hard time in life, decided to try making money as a prostitute and got HIV from someone.
I'm convinced the suggestive stuff at the Love Hotel isn't directly related to Sabitsuki. (Warning: Spoilery theory stuff below) 1. You need to eat 5 cakes at the Sugar Hole to unlock the "Sugar Girls" area at the Love Hotel (the one with the giant girl statues in suggestive poses). Those cakes are bought from the Gas Mask Maid. 2. The Sugar Girls area is randomly accessed by interacting with a faceless maid at the Love Hotel, either suggesting that her face is unknown or Sabitsuki doesn't want to remember it. 3. If you go all the way through the Sugar Girls area up to the Vomit Girl and the following corridor, you'll find an unreachable Sugar Girl. This probably implies that something happened to Sugar Girl and she couldn't ever come back to what she was before. Note that you access that corridor through the Vomit Girl's face, which might refer to the faceless maid from earlier. 4. There's another path in the Sugar Girls area which is an exit. If you go that way, you'll be back at the Love Hotel in the bathroom with a maid lying down on the ground. So far, the way I see it is that the Gas Mask Maid and the Sugar Girl are one and the same person, Sugar Girl being her past self and Gas Mask Maid being her present self. Back when she was younger she was working as a maid at the Love Hotel (or maybe a prostitute roleplaying as a maid?), and one day a client sexually abused her in the toilet. That's when she got pregnant with Sabitsuki. This could give an explanation to "Who is Sabitsuki's dad?", why Sabitsuki was so distant with Sugar Girl ever since her childhood (parental neglect due to Sabitsuki being an unwanted child?) and why Sabitsuki eventually ran away and led a rebellious life. I don't think Sabitsuki ever has been a prostitute, but I think it's highly possible that her mother (Sugar Girl/GMM) used to be and she ended up with a daughter because of what happened at the Love Hotel. I'm still working on my theory, but this is what I think of this part of the game.

You can also see her standing at the edge of the building in VomitGirl area, though You can not interract with her thanks to the giant hands blocking her. This might mark to her eventually ending her life after giving birth. You can also see her sitting nearby the corner and smoking a cigarette in the "Deterioration corridors" area, the area where You can see the eternity of Sabitsuki's childhood until the very incident of her life being torn apart just like a thin, white thread. There is a very lot of sources to fond therioes from. Which is what I just can not do. So, I adhor your theory. Especially the possible Sabitsuki's dad one.

It could just be my interpretation, but the definition that fit the best was “to be rust eaten” which implies that something was already covered in rust. Hence the past tense in the OG comment. Hmmm... You should start a crazy puzzle death game in which you kidnap people, strap bracelets with bombs on them to their wrists and force them to complete a bunch of puzzles in groups related to the numbers on their bracelets and random mathematics. All for ambiguous reasons which relate to your backstory and other absurd stuff.

I'm guessing that Flow (which is the feeling of total immersion in a difficult task) means that Sabitsuki's dream state is just her concentrating on her computer and forgetting the world around her. Also. I think that Smile looks similar to Lol.
yeah. it makes me think she's fallen into a depression and become obsessed with watching morbid things on the internet, neglecting her own physical wellbeing in the process (represented by her rotting & staining her room with blood, but i wonder if it's representing the physical discomfort of poor hygiene & bed sores). but the more she watches, the more she is confronted by her own past traumas, and the more she delves further into the internet to distract herself from it in a state of 'flow' instead of accepting reality. the recurring imagery of soulless children & faceless people makes me think she's dissociating and becoming physically sick as a response to her mental troubles.
Honestly I love .flow, Lcd Dem, Yume 2kki, and Yume Nisshi, but there is still one other fangame that I love even more. め (Me) its surprisingly not as popular as .flow even though it is very creepy. If you have never heard of it or seen anything from め you should download the game. Its kind of like Lcd Dem because you have to collect orbs. There are only 11 effects but most of them are useful. This game is slightly different then other games because NPC's can talk to you, and it has a backstory which is revealed in different areas in the update 0.05 and 0.04. And one last thing... Eyes...
I think one of my favorite changes you get from exploring as Rust instead of Sabitsuki is the event where you get jumpscared by a chaser in an alleyway. Sabitsuki gets teleported to a maze, and her sprite is visibly freaked out when you escape. Rust just pipes the enemy to death the instant it's near you.
I like the game especially because, to me, it feels like the narrative was told very well. I do like the visuals, the atmosphere and how unsettling the game is(Much preferred over most "traditional" horror games)... But such a style of game - no text, no clear information, complex narrative - actually being able to tell such an oddly precise story when it comes to the key-points, is pretty awesome.
It would make sense that this is one of the only one of the prominent dreamers games that still receives care from its creator, lolrust. Since, y'know, he's not MIA (Nikki), or went mad (LCDDEM), or became completely ass-blasted to the point of abandoning their work (Nisshi).
Kappadaniel Koronba? He never gave a reason, but he did issue a 'sorry'. It's speculated that something happened that he didn't want to remember and the game served to remind him of it. He completely removed himself from the internet entirely as of this year now too, deleting his twitter and so on. I'd speculate that he was perhaps suffering from depression. Zenmaigahara on the other hand got really butt-hurt that their game kept getting to the West despite their efforts to prevent that, so in an incredibly petty fit, announced they were ceasing any work on Nisshi.
bad meme Something happened and he wanted the game to cease existing, not just stop working on it, but specifically requested that everyone remove anything related to it and never mention it to him. Then so many years later decided, without notice, to take down every bit of online presence he had, as well as remove all of his music that he uploaded to the internet. Maybe people kept bringing it up, dunno.
That depends on whether or not you count Yume 2kki, which at this very moment is getting world-blasted by this ONE user named Spelude. She already had at least 20 worlds before 0.105c but then added at least _six_ more worlds in the aforementioned update. The good news is that she's not half bad, although a lot of her worlds are rather empty.
Yume Nikki attracts strange people who see themselves in Madotsuki so this isn't surprising. Not even saying that as an insult, just an unsettling fact.
I love his this game really feels like it’s own thing, it’s a Yume Nikki fan game but it has it’s own identity, it’s using the same engine to tell its own story with it’s own personality.
I don't know if this is used in the game or not, but I found something really interesting in the game files. in the pictures folder, there is a slideshow (various progressing images) of what seems to be Sabitsuki's room slowly becoming more bloody red and horrid, and what looks like Rust breaking into her room while she is asleep and carrying the iron pipe
This is just a cutscene when You wake up as Rust with all three "empty boxes" *not* being collected. I was used to watch it at least seven times when I was trying to reach for the third, "true" ending.
So I gotta ask, with all these RPG Maker games, have you ever played LSD: Dream Emulator on the PS1? It's similar to them: You're given ten-minute dreams, in randomized places where weird and freaky shit happens. The longer you play however, the backgrounds will intentionally become glitchier and glitchier.

The so-called "flow" state can be engaged and controlled via the activation of the Kundalini impulse. It is a direct negotiation with one's sense of trajectory and will amplify other senses. We call it "dilated perception", or "time warping", as you can also manipulate your perception of passing time, effectively moving faster. There is a great deal what can be accomplished this way that seems a lot like glitching the game in ways. Life can be played much like a video game, most people are completely missing the "effects". These games are representative of reality.
Can someone help me? When trying to start up .flow it messes up. The game starts out fine, with static room but whenever I press enter or space my game will crash and this message will pop up: "???,,™??????" Can someone please help me? applocale won't even let me start it up because "im missing a file" or something like that and I can't find any way to start it up on the internet. Please & thank you.
Man, I found a video to show off to friends who ask me what my Sabitsuki and Pigtailed Kaibutsu cosplays are from. You went over a lot of good points about the game and why it's such a favorite game of mine. Yume Nikki is the classic that started it all but over time I've come to find I love .Flow more and that's mostly due to aesthetics and "story".
Your Yume Nikki videos are AMAZING! I'll subscribe to you! But here's a question. Will you ever do Yume 2kki? It's by far the best Yume Nikki fangame I play since this game it's very large and the creators updates it at least about a month. The updates do change the locations though.

i absolutely would say it's a better game, the smaller and more interconnected world is so much more enjoyable to explore and the story is more detailed and interesting. yume nikki is still great but .flow is more like an /actual game/

I’ve finally played Flow after first watching this. Personally, I think it’s better than Yume 2kki. Sure, there’s probably years worth of work in both but 2kki just seems too much. Flow? It’s straight and to the point despite having no instructions, has an intriguing story(?) and events that either scare you or make you go “what the fuck was that, I need to figure this thing out” Maybe it’s that weird part of me that finds this genre or horror…calming? Cathartic? Idk how to describe it man. Yume Nikki already resonated with me as someone who struggled with childhood anxiety and depression, so just clone it with a Silent Hill aesthetic and extra content and I’ll probably love it.

I've been trying to download this game, I can easily play other RPG games I have the RPT downloaded, but every time I open this game I can go to title screen, I see the standing in pitch black and everything but as soon as I try to do anything it immediately closes the game and gives me a text box with question marks... I checked everywhere in case theres something in another folder I need to fix but, idk..

CAN SOMEONE HELP ME PLEASE I'M DESPERATE!!! I have Windows 10, and I've downloaded many different versions of .flow (some that are .rar files and some that are .zip- btw I use both 7zip and WinRar) and NONE of them will work properly. At first I couldn't get past the menu, it wouldn't let me select any options or move the selector or anything it's like it didn't even recognize I was doing anything. They've all had that issue, so I downloaded multiple different versions of .flow in English and Japanese all from the links provided in this vid. The last one I tried was the latest update in the game (the one in Japanese) and I finally got the menu to work after running the application as administrator- but now I have another problem. Right after I start the game I get the scene with Sabitzuki in a black room glitching out and then vanishing into pixels. The game immediately crashes afterward with an error message reading, "???? ,, (trademark symbol) ?????" It's kinda creepy and I wish I could figure out what's wrong with my PC??? (I have no problems running Yume Nikki so why this?) Leik I just wanna play this game already leik I cry every teim.

As cool as this game was, I wouldn't necessarily call it better than Yume Nikki as some people might, think I've heard of that somewhere anyway... But like, I'd say it's mainly too different to even really compare them. While .flow is kind of dark and disturbing with what seems to be a clearer story, Yume Nikki is arguably the best one at exploring the vast expanses of Madotsuki's mind, and getting lost wandering around in there is like literally getting lost in your mind, your deep subconscious. :p There was also both light moments and dark moments in her dream, and it's not just one big theme, that's what I like about it. :p Sometimes these games make me think less of exploring dreams or memories and more like their soul, going inside their own selves... Also, the original game seems to explore social anxiety (hikikomoriness) and depression really well... When it comes to these themes, the original arguably does this best, but I kind of like that fan games seem to kind of have their own thing too, but if they also use some elements that Yume Nikki had especially just because as a parody, I feel like it doesn't work as well. :p

I have a theory that .flow tells an ambitious story of a girl who used to beat up her classmates in defense of her friend, but eventually find herself part of an experiment to have herself be emersed in a game on her computer, meant to tap into her psyche. The more she willingly gives into the experiment, the more her mind erodes away until there is nothing left of her

i don't usually get scared by much, horror is my absolute favorite genre of all media. but for some odd reason this game creeps me out SO much. it gives me so much anxiety and makes me feel like there's something behind me...i love it!

I dunno... I think too much gangrene and blodd loss caused her to be isolated thinking she is a kaibutsu, or a cursed child. And this isolation, combined with the nightmares she’s in, be it if she’s awake or in her subconscious, caused her to be so mad.
The way I see it, Sabitsuki is a patient suffering from a terminal illness. These "dreams" are actually Intensive Care Psychosis, which is essentially a type of fever dream people get while in life-threatening situations. Rust could represent her being on the brink of death, with her deepest memories resurfacing.
Edit: Having completed the game, I think I can get more specific and say that Sabitsuki is dying of AIDS. There's a lot of imagery suggesting sexual aspects of her life and perhaps even prostitution - maybe she was having a hard time in life, decided to try making money as a prostitute and got HIV from someone.
I'm convinced the suggestive stuff at the Love Hotel isn't directly related to Sabitsuki.
(Warning: Spoilery theory stuff below)
1. You need to eat 5 cakes at the Sugar Hole to unlock the "Sugar Girls" area at the Love Hotel (the one with the giant girl statues in suggestive poses). Those cakes are bought from the Gas Mask Maid.
2. The Sugar Girls area is randomly accessed by interacting with a faceless maid at the Love Hotel, either suggesting that her face is unknown or Sabitsuki doesn't want to remember it.
3. If you go all the way through the Sugar Girls area up to the Vomit Girl and the following corridor, you'll find an unreachable Sugar Girl. This probably implies that something happened to Sugar Girl and she couldn't ever come back to what she was before. Note that you access that corridor through the Vomit Girl's face, which might refer to the faceless maid from earlier.
4. There's another path in the Sugar Girls area which is an exit. If you go that way, you'll be back at the Love Hotel in the bathroom with a maid lying down on the ground.
So far, the way I see it is that the Gas Mask Maid and the Sugar Girl are one and the same person, Sugar Girl being her past self and Gas Mask Maid being her present self. Back when she was younger she was working as a maid at the Love Hotel (or maybe a prostitute roleplaying as a maid?), and one day a client sexually abused her in the toilet. That's when she got pregnant with Sabitsuki. This could give an explanation to "Who is Sabitsuki's dad?", why Sabitsuki was so distant with Sugar Girl ever since her childhood (parental neglect due to Sabitsuki being an unwanted child?) and why Sabitsuki eventually ran away and led a rebellious life.
I don't think Sabitsuki ever has been a prostitute, but I think it's highly possible that her mother (Sugar Girl/GMM) used to be and she ended up with a daughter because of what happened at the Love Hotel.
I'm still working on my theory, but this is what I think of this part of the game.

You can also see her standing at the edge of the building in VomitGirl area, though You can not interract with her thanks to the giant hands blocking her.
This might mark to her eventually ending her life after giving birth.
You can also see her sitting nearby the corner and smoking a cigarette in the "Deterioration corridors" area, the area where You can see the eternity of Sabitsuki's childhood until the very incident of her life being torn apart just like a thin, white thread.
There is a very lot of sources to fond therioes from. Which is what I just can not do.

I'm guessing that Flow (which is the feeling of total immersion in a difficult task) means that Sabitsuki's dream state is just her concentrating on her computer and forgetting the world around her. Also. I think that Smile looks similar to Lol.
yeah. it makes me think she's fallen into a depression and become obsessed with watching morbid things on the internet, neglecting her own physical wellbeing in the process (represented by her rotting & staining her room with blood, but i wonder if it's representing the physical discomfort of poor hygiene & bed sores). but the more she watches, the more she is confronted by her own past traumas, and the more she delves further into the internet to distract herself from it in a state of 'flow' instead of accepting reality. the recurring imagery of soulless children & faceless people makes me think she's dissociating and becoming physically sick as a response to her mental troubles.

Honestly I love .flow, Lcd Dem, Yume 2kki, and Yume Nisshi, but there is still one other fangame that I love even more. め (Me) its surprisingly not as popular as .flow even though it is very creepy. If you have never heard of it or seen anything from め you should download the game. Its kind of like Lcd Dem because you have to collect orbs. There are only 11 effects but most of them are useful. This game is slightly different then other games because NPC's can talk to you, and it has a backstory which is revealed in different areas in the update 0.05 and 0.04. And one last thing... Eyes...
If you're up for it, I'd definitely recommend a very obscure fan game called Someday. It's shockingly good!

I think one of my favorite changes you get from exploring as Rust instead of Sabitsuki is the event where you get jumpscared by a chaser in an alleyway. Sabitsuki gets teleported to a maze, and her sprite is visibly freaked out when you escape. Rust just pipes the enemy to death the instant it's near you.
I like the game especially because, to me, it feels like the narrative was told very well. I do like the visuals, the atmosphere and how unsettling the game is(Much preferred over most "traditional" horror games)... But such a style of game - no text, no clear information, complex narrative - actually being able to tell such an oddly precise story when it comes to the key-points, is pretty awesome.

That depends on whether or not you count Yume 2kki, which at this very moment is getting world-blasted by this ONE user named Spelude. She already had at least 20 worlds before 0.105c but then added at least _six_ more worlds in the aforementioned update.
The good news is that she's not half bad, although a lot of her worlds are rather empty.
Yume Nikki attracts strange people who see themselves in Madotsuki so this isn't surprising. Not even saying that as an insult, just an unsettling fact.

I love his this game really feels like it’s own thing, it’s a Yume Nikki fan game but it has it’s own identity, it’s using the same engine to tell its own story with it’s own personality.
I don't know if this is used in the game or not, but I found something really interesting in the game files. in the pictures folder, there is a slideshow (various progressing images) of what seems to be Sabitsuki's room slowly becoming more bloody red and horrid, and what looks like Rust breaking into her room while she is asleep and carrying the iron pipe
This is just a cutscene when You wake up as Rust with all three "empty boxes" *not* being collected.
I was used to watch it at least seven times when I was trying to reach for the third, "true" ending.

The game starts out fine, with static room but whenever I press enter or space my game will crash and this message will pop up: "???,,™??????" Man, I found a video to show off to friends who ask me what my Sabitsuki and Pigtailed Kaibutsu cosplays are from. You went over a lot of good points about the game and why it's such a favorite game of mine. Yume Nikki is the classic that started it all but over time I've come to find I love .Flow more and that's mostly due to aesthetics and "story".

I’ve finally played Flow after first watching this.
Personally, I think it’s better than Yume 2kki. Sure, there’s probably years worth of work in both but 2kki just seems too much. Flow? It’s straight and to the point despite having no instructions, has an intriguing story(?) and events that either scare you or make you go “what the fuck was that, I need to figure this thing out”
Maybe it’s that weird part of me that finds this genre or horror…calming? Cathartic? Idk how to describe it man. Yume Nikki already resonated with me as someone who struggled with childhood anxiety and depression, so just clone it with a Silent Hill aesthetic and extra content and I’ll probably love it.

I've been trying to download this game, I can easily play other RPG games I have the RPT downloaded, but every time I open this game I can go to title screen, I see the standing in pitch black and everything but as soon as I try to do anything it immediately closes the game and gives me a text box with question marks... CAN SOMEONE HELP ME PLEASE I'M DESPERATE!!! I have Windows 10, and I've downloaded many different versions of .flow (some that are .rar files and some that are .zip- btw I use both 7zip and WinRar) and NONE of them will work properly. At first I couldn't get past the menu, it wouldn't let me select any options or move the selector or anything it's like it didn't even recognize I was doing anything. They've all had that issue, so I downloaded multiple different versions of .flow in English and Japanese all from the links provided in this vid. The last one I tried was the latest update in the game (the one in Japanese) and I finally got the menu to work after running the application as administrator- but now I have another problem. Right after I start the game I get the scene with Sabitzuki in a black room glitching out and then vanishing into pixels. The game immediately crashes afterward with an error message reading, "???? ,, (trademark symbol) ?????" It's kinda creepy and I wish I could figure out what's wrong with my PC??? (I have no problems running Yume Nikki so why this?) Leik I just wanna play this game already leik I cry every teim.

As cool as this game was, I wouldn't necessarily call it better than Yume Nikki as some people might, think I've heard of that somewhere anyway...
But like, I'd say it's mainly too different to even really compare them.
While .flow is kind of dark and disturbing with what seems to be a clearer story, Yume Nikki is arguably the best one at exploring the vast expanses of Madotsuki's mind, and getting lost wandering around in there is like literally getting lost in your mind, your deep subconscious. :p
There was also both light moments and dark moments in her dream, and it's not just one big theme, that's what I like about it. :p
Sometimes these games make me think less of exploring dreams or memories and more like their soul, going inside their own selves...
Also, the original game seems to explore social anxiety (hikikomoriness) and depression really well...
When it comes to these themes, the original arguably does this best, but I kind of like that fan games seem to kind of have their own thing too, but if they also use some elements that Yume Nikki had especially just because as a parody, I feel like it doesn't work as well. :p

I have a theory that .flow tells an ambitious story of a girl who used to beat up her classmates in defense of her friend, but eventually find herself part of an experiment to have herself be emersed in a game on her computer, meant to tap into her psyche. The more she willingly gives into the experiment, the more her mind erodes away until there is nothing left of her
