lcd dem was, if I remember correctly, actually never properly finished. koronba had actually posted online essentially pleading with people to just forget the game had ever existed. no one had found the reason for this, however. lcd dem was also one of the most lonely fangames i think i had ever played. whether this was intentional or just because more npcs weren't added, that's unknown as well. nice video nitro! :)

Gnurt But Toby's obviously inspired by yume nikki from some of the area's ambiance like waterfall and to a lesser degree the lava area when no one's talking, to gaster, to even the main character's design resembling mototsuki's, and probably other similarities I haven't thought of of the tome of my head. Plus he did use Uboas sprite in his earthbound rom hack. Like it's not as prominent as with Lisa by any means but it definitely shows inspirations from Yume Nikki.

The picture at 10:24 seems related to the Egyptian myth of Ra and Nut, where the sun god (Ra) travels through the sky to be eaten by Nut (the sky), which ends the day, only to be reborn in the next morning.

I gotta say, I really like the aesthetics on LCDDEM. It's like Yume Nikki but more faded, more peaceful even. It fits with the tranquil vibe.
Man, the story of Nisshi never being finished makes me so sad. It's like being invested in a book only to have it stop halfway through.
For what it's worth, a new version came out in 2020, though we haven't had news since, besides the author's weird tweets.

How does one even know when new fangames are released though?
I've just recently played a Yume Nikki fangame called Fleshchild and I think it's become one of my favourites. There's a solid portion of the game (namely the alleged "real" world) that is very different in gameplay in contrast to the original. The game is still in beta but was just updated early last year.

The bat with nails is a reference to japanese deliquent culture, being used as a weapon by deliquent schoolkids. The bat usually has the nails being hammered into it with no directly sharp points, only the nail heads, to cause harm.
usosuki being more violent in dreams makes sense to me, i’ve had a lot of post-trauma dreams that at some point have me violently attacking someone and their mangled body eventually getting up and chasing me
i’m not at all a violent person- i rarely get properly angry- but sometimes that’s the type of thing trauma can manifest
did someone say YN fangames 'cause i love them.
so one thing for them is that i don't strictly consider them 'horror games', yeah they branched off of a game that could be considered 'psychological horror' but the main point is exploring the subconscious of the protagonists so they vary greatly.
personally my overall favorite is Nisshi, it has neat features and for me it's the closest to the original YN experience but managing to be its own thing and not making the mistakes that various other do like: put blood everywhere, have empty as fuck worlds when they're not direct copies of the original YN maps (coughcoughgraffityworldcoughcough), make ear-piercing sound loops, sprinke a lil' bit of stuff that actually tells you something about the protagonist and don't forget the annoying as hell maze full of chasers.
as for LcdDem it actually does have step sounds, maybe it was a problem with the Locale.

Two things I discovered Nishi released with an update two years ago and the creator of answered prayers did a developer commentary of the game on their RUclips channel

Literally all of the sound effects you listed as missing from LCDDEM are in the game. I think your audio is messed up.

I learned five minutes ago that a line in the rpgmaker app was missing and that you have to write it in the rpgmaker settings to hear those sounds
Best thing about LCDDEM is the music, good job covering it.
Never bothered with Answered Prayers, seems I largely made the right choice.

hey this is completely unrelated to the video but im studying japanese right now (hiragana specifically) and i noticed that usotsuki was a name that i could actually read and write on my own with knowledge i already had and seeing it on screen and reading it before seeing it revealed to be a word in english made me feel really cool

I think I've read somewhere that the journey of the sun in ancient Egyptian belief was likened to Ra going inside a mouth and going through a long channel (intestines?). Hey bud! Great video, I'm always excited when you release Yume Nikki related content. You don't get too caught up in bashing a game simply for comedic effect, and I find that refreshing.
If I had to give some criticism, I'd say you could still sharpen up your writing a bit. Some of your wording strikes me as a bit awkward, such as when you use the word "weird" several times in a few sentences. Also, some of your captions are so quick I have to try to pause the video several times to read them. If you want the audience to read something, you should let it sit for at least a few seconds. Keep up the good work!

I think the pure aesthetic alone of Answered Prayers really gives it an edge over other fan games. Its creator is very clearly a gifted character designer, with Fluorette being one of their more note worthy designs. She has a very Touhou look to her in that she's designed to look both complex and simple at the same time. I'm gonna have to agree with you though. The maze in it is pretty awful.

considering that most people see chie as a little girl (7-12 at most), i think the creator just took Chie Satonaka and Nanako Dojima from persona 4 and tossed em into a blender
Someone has probably already commented this but apparently Answered Prayers and Yume Nisshi are both still POSSIBLY being worked on. Since this video there was a 0.05 update to Yume Nisshi in 2020, which is 4 years ago, but the gap between that and 0.04 was 5 years. Maybe after the asset stealing it's just more of a side project for them? The most recent post from the twitter account that posted updates for the game was from this year. And after almost 10 years in 2022 Answered Prayers site was updated saying that a new version is in development.

the reason why koronba took down the lcddem website (and all of his social media) is because attention ruined his mental health. i’m a huge fan of his music and even though i was never actually there when he was active (i only discovered him last year) i read about what happened. it’s theorized that he committed suicide after one of his songs “.” (also known as jellyfish) got popular. i might be in the wrong here but if anybody in here knows more about koronba you can correct me if i’m wrong

I have a question that has been bothering me for a while. How are you able to play it on your computer? Every time I hit Flow on the title menu, the game crashes after static and then an error code comes up. Pleeeease reply to this ASAP..

The best kind of weird is when the show up in places they don't belong, that's why they're so effective in Zelda games and the eels in Mario 64.
IIRC Koronba either died or simply disappeared off the internet due to his fear of popularity, so it seems that LCDDEM may never be worked on further

Why do you praise this feature in this game, but you said you didn't like it in the Crooked Man?
Because with that function you can leave the game and resume where you left off, instead of having to travel where you where again. In the crooked man, that is the only way of saving, and the crooked man is a game where you can die and loose a lot of progress becouse of that, that doesn't happen in Yume Nisshi.

Aside from my suggestions, I just wanted to mention that lol is my absolute FAVORITE Yume Nikki fangame developer, and it's not just because he made one of my two favorite fangames (the other being 2kki).

I’m watching this 4 years after it was made and thought that Answered Prayers might have picked up development again. But it doesn’t look like it. The developer has no mention of the game on their social media although they are active.

That image that you mentioned is the sky, I say this based on the Egyptian Gods, where the sky was a goddess named Nut and has that same position. she is related with her husband Geb the god of the earth.

It's the prequel to Lisa the Painful RPG. It was a freeware Yume Nikki-esque game Austin made before he made Lisa the Painful.
