Hi, I taught at an international school in HK for about 14 years. I started in 2004 at HK$40K per month and worked my way up the pay scale to HK$85K per month. I've moved back to the UK a few years ago and can't find a job anywhere that will pay even half that. But that's ok, 14 years in HK was enough.

That’s a good teaching salary. Thanks for sharing

@@NomadicTeachers Good? Perhaps. But was it worth it? That's debatable when you take into account the BS I, no we, had to put up with from senior management

I was working in Shenzhen for the past year (came back to the US last month), and while my salary was pretty average for a teaching salary there, I was still saving a lot each month. I’ve been considering Hong Kong, but it’s difficult when comparing it to the cost of living in Shenzhen which is theoretically walking distance from HK 😪

That’s true. They’re close in proximity, but are culturally world’s apart.

@@NomadicTeachers Yeah, all of my friends that lived in China pre-Covid and had the luxury of visiting HK have told me the same thing 😂

Caveat. Yes, personal income tax is low at 15%, and no sales tax, versus 35% of the US, also no sales tax (not sure different in each state). But Hong Kong cost of living is high. Apartment rent and eating out, for example. Transportation cost is low though, for MTR and Taxi. Telecom like Wi-Fi is the most efficient among world metro cities.

Meh. HK living costs is cheap. Our mortgage is only 9% of our net income because mortgage rates are low
