All these years later Ron is still the first place I go to for information. Hope that the family is doing well and still getting something from Ron's vids.
Man I wish I could've met this man. 😪 it breaks my heart knowing he's past but he's made an incredible impact on the diy or pro mechanics. Thanks Ron for your knowledge and know it is greatly appreciated
Nice videos Ron! I feel as if I work on my own trucks its like paying my self $85-$125 per hour. I don't understand how people can afford NOT to work on there own stuff. Keep up the good work!
Hi, we had 6 codes related to low turbo boost, we cleared all codes & code came back as P0299 low Boost, first thing we did was check the intercooler, right side of the intercooler was leaking very badly & would not hold pressure, we changed the intercooler & roadtested, we still had lack of power with turbo fart on hard acceleration, removed turbo, vains were stuck, cleaned turbo, checked operation no good, found roll pin broken in actuator, fixed pin & cured problem, thanks for the video.
Cleaning is easy with the proper tools. If you're able to remove it and more important install it back properly than cleaning it is easy. I read people commenting on the anti seize. It's only for assembly. It's gone once it warms up. By far the most common cause for failure is short driving times not burning the condensation and moisture off.
RIP Ron. Thanks for all the help along the way. Split our oldest 2003 6.0 turbo today. Barking, performance code. Unison ring was real tight. Cleaned it up real good. Minor pitting. Unison wheel was in fine condition otherwise. 173k. Actuator slot not oblonged etc. Pretty certain I had improved % on VGT data also. Like it wasn’t fully functional prior to cleaning.
You can pull the VGT actuator and use a magnet or a pick ( I forget now ) and move the unison ring pretty easy when it’s working properly. Plus you can do this before and after cleaning to see the difference. In fact I’m sure Ron shows how to do it
I was worried I might need to replace my turbo as Ron said that if Unison ring stuck on its mounting and wont turn you might have to replace it. I attacked it with a die grinder and wire brush and 3M roloc wheels. These helped but still left behind a lot of corrosion. After taking a Goodson carbide super scraper to the hub where unison ring seats and the area underneath where the ring mounts it cleaned up real nice and now the unison ring moves freely. It also worked great on the mating surface of the two halves of the turbo which were heavily corroded. Just take your time with it and dont leave gouge marks. Work with a shallow angle so as not to dig in.
I'm stumped on mine. No code set but taking off from a dead stop it lags, the VGT goes up and not down.. On hard acceleration it will go to 85% then drop to say 30% or whatever and that's when it accelerates.. Blows plumes of black smoke.. Changed my VGT actuator but no difference. Also, going down the road about 50-70 mph I try to accelerate, it will miss until I let off the gas and hit the gas hard again it will take off. Haven't taken the turbo off yet.
i had all this problem. nd when it came back from mechanics it only made 15 psi max boost. did all sorts of forum researches. ended up being a clogged map sensor line. i drove myself wild trynna figure this out! new line and a thorough cleaning and it hauls ass!!
Hey diesel tech Ron I just bought a 04 6.0 the vgt at idle is 85 but at 70 it's around 53 but I'm only able to build 18psi of boost I think from exhaust sounds my veins in the turbo are stuck
Most all the turbos Ive done, the antisieze burns away in a relatively short period of time anyway. The problem lies when you glob it on .Use sparingly if at all.
CETANE rating of 45 is the Minimal for Fords and its crucial! Most diesel fuel in the US has a rating 38-40, not enough for Fords. Low Cetane ratings will cause silt build up and cause your EGR's to gum up and fail.
Awesome video. I took my dad's identical turbo apart and the plate was stuck. I took a wire brush and cleaned up very well, added some anti-sieze, reassembled, checked with a magnet for movement.....all good, reinstalled turbo. It sounded great and truck fired right up but after driving for a day, went to pass and lost power. Not sure what happened. Maybe something got disconnected. Any thoughts?
Ron, Thanks for all the helpful hints. I recently replaced the turbo on my 6.0. The truck runs great, however under a heavy load with no loss of power it will throw a PO299. The turbo pressure on the instrument cluster will indicate good positive pressure and the scan gauge would show a negative boost, VGT will also drop below 15. All seems normal when the load lightens up a bit. Please help. Any Idea ?
Over the weekend, I tore into this project & got to the part in reassembly where Im pulling the seal for the oil operated piston that moves the actuator rod & it wasnt moving using a magnetic parts grabber like youre using. I was working outside & it started snowing, so I moved things into the garage & this piston fell out in the process, I put it back in -seemingly it had a full range of motion, I reassembled the exhaust side to the center housing & reattempted the magnetic parts grabber on the piston while shining the light into where the Y pipe hooks onto & could see the vanes moving. Ive now got everything back on & the truck fires up, but it seems really reluctant to build boost, maxes out @ ~10psi, and has some funny sounding harmonics. I think my alignment for the piston & the actuator rod went less than great -How would I go about checking this? :)
Hi. Sorry for the late reply. I have a video about power loss after turbo repair showing how to index it properly. also the ring sticks on the hub.. I should have shown cleaning that TOO
+DieselTechRon No worries, Thanks for replying :) This weekend I had the opportunity to tear the turbo off again & reindex the piston/plunger to the actuator arm. After having put everything back together, it still seems like Im not really getting that much boost (engine sounds from the previous time apparently were not getting the downpipe completely mated up to the turbo); At the moment DTC-wise Im getting P1000, P0113, and P0487. Would any of these cause the turbo to make a more minimal output?
My 05 f-250 want to rev the turbo when not needed like 50mph and below is good but once you step on it a bit to get going it want to do like a constant rev and sometime will cut powers of the turbo get to high when doing it but then jump backs on
f250 turbo 6.0 ran fine just before the 0299 code; took turbo apart and disc/viens were ceased so got them cleaned up very well and applied anti-sieze, reassembled and checked with magnet and moved back n forth. Installed turbo, and reconnected all. Drove for a day and on second day took it on the highway, wen to pass a car and lost power. Very demoralizing. It's my dad's truck. I haven't looked at the truck to see if something came loose but curious if you had any thoughts.
Great Video, thank you much! Question - is the oil change mandatory after doing the turbo clean/service? i know Ford recomends it but I wonder if i can get away with it since the oil was just changed 2 weeks ago
Does a stuck on unison ring mean replace the turbo or is it ok to change out the unison ring? Hello Ron thanks again for all the great videos. I just disassembled the turbo and the unison ring was really stuck on. Had to pry it off like you said. The actuator hole looks ok but this my first so not sure. Does a stuck in unison ring mean replace the turbo or is it ok to change out the unison ring? I have a 2003 Excursion 6.0. It was blowing off through the intake ("barking" "huffing" don't know the term) while accelerating, and when I let off it would chatter air sound. I had a p2285 but I changed the ICP and harness a couple moths ago and while in it right now it looks good no leaking. The IPR pigtail was frayed on both wires. I've spliced in a new pigtail for that and have put the new screen and gasket set on it. Thanks for your time sir!
Hi Ron: Is it possible, to check the vane movement of the vanes, through the port with the threaded plug, while the turbocharger still mounted on the vehicle. Thanks...
Ron, Any reason to not use a media blast cabinet to clean the the outer housing? Also if you do what would be the better media to use Sand,Glass or Walnut? Thanks
Would anyone happen to know if a faulty plunger would have a negative impact upon reassembly? The actuator rod from the oil plunger makes a gargling noise and is difficult to move back and forth when i rotate the unison ring. Is it normally pretty hesitant to move, or is the pluner not operating as it should?
I have a real issue with my 07 6.0 PSD when at a wide open throttle, fully warmed up and under medium to heavy load, I'm getting a popping through the intake noise and a loss of power... I'm in the process of pulling the heads off to replace bolts with studs and new bulletproof EGR cooler and engine oil cooler. The cylinder heads checked out good(no cracks, pressure tests and perfectly straight) I'm hoping that when it's all back together that the "popping" is gone. There were no stored codes and I had plenty of boost. While the turbo was off I tore it down and cleaned it, all the working parts moved smooth and easy. Is there anything that you can suggest before I put it all back together?
Ron, I've got a check engine light on my 06 6.0 the other night after a cold start and I tried to read it but it said no codes. I deleted it and got it again the next day and it said p0000. The truck doesn't run rough and idk what the hell I could be, I'm thinking if anything the ficm is bad cause it's getting hard to start since it's been cold
Hi, my wastegate is shut closed tight. The actuator is not holding pressure causing the wastegate flapper to be stucked closed. But I don't know why I am getting a P0299 underboost code. If wastegate is stucked closed shouldn't i be having overboost ? The car runs but has no power slow acceleration. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
Ron I got my turbo off and when I pulled it apart, the unison ring was definitely stuck and I had to pry it off. The unison ring looks fine. Do I need to get a new turbo or is there a way to free the unison ring?
Same issue here... I just sanded and cleaned the place where it was stuck on - it was rusty. So i will start putting it together now and see how it goes
Hi Ron I have an f350 6.0 that starts fine just takes a while I'm talking half hour to worm up any idea.. it's runs fine after wormed up. If I start and let it worm up for 5 minutes and try to drive it feels like it's missing. But if I let it worm up for 30 min. She runs amazing. Idk if this help but it's a standard transmission. .
Gentlemen, question? I have a 05 6.0 diesel, Check engine light is on. I have cleaned the ERG valve, Checked the air line on the manifold by the map thing, also replaced a top hose that was cracked. reset service light, light is off. now the problem is that the top turbo hose keeps blowing off, there was no oils or anything that was put on the hose, only carb. cleaner and cleaned all the connecting fitting. now it seems that I have way to much pressure, the top hose keeps blowing off upon heavy acceleration or when towing, what am I missing, is there anything that I need to check? I feel that it a sensor somewhere, thats my feeling. the turbo to me feels fine. but I'm not a Diesel tech. so if anyone has experienced this please help me thank you.
Anti seize melts? Hmmm Been using it for years inside VGT chargers... Never had an issue. But I guess you two goons know better than me, him and Ford engineers...
Hi Ron, I have 2002 6.0 powerstroke F450, in my turbo charge I see there is oil inside the turbo and go inside the exhaust down pipe, when I start the engine there is a lot white smog, how I can fix this. Thank you,
Hi Ron I have i2005 F350 sounds like it has a air leak coming out from the turbo when I disconnected electrical wire that a hook up to turbo stops sound of air leak will stop is there any way that anybody can tell me what this can Be the problem
Hi Ron, Love the videos but can't find my problem. I get the PO299 but the truck runs like new with no problems. I have a new EGR valve, new MAP, new sensor under the Degauss tank(can't remember the name) and only a CEL. It will run for days then throw the CEL. It runs about 25# of boost. Any ideas? 57K 50% pulling 16k trailer.
We’ll let me start by saying my turbo was making small noises of something grinding inside while I was driving , I don’t know why but I accelerated down thinking it would fix the issue but instead my truck started blowing bluish white smoke and ran for a little bit and ended up shutting off, and it leaked out a lot of oil during that time it leaked out on the passenger side of the truck looked like the smoke could possibly been from oil in the exhaust (2003 Ford F-250 6.0). Now it won’t start , and is showing a p132b code . A mechanic came with another computer and is claiming piston 5 is misfiring as well. Has anyone ever experienced this ? Or have any idea what it maybe? I don’t want too invest in all kinds of parts for no reason that’s why it’s important for me too find out what the issue is .
Hi,could you tell what is happened I start the engine cold and was running 30-40 minut good I stop engine for 3-4hours than I start the engine and show me low oil pressure where i have to look to find problem
I have low oil pressure unless I give it throttle. It smokes, has no throttle response at first, check gauges light also came on. It smokes so bad as well
I have a 2006 6.0 F350 and I have smoke coming from the exhaust and vibration while idling/driving and won’t go over 55mph and struggles to get boost power and turned off lost all power while on the road could be bad injector or my turbo gone bad? Any conclusions?

Yes. Pretty common. I’ve done a few now.

replace it if it's worn. Check where the shaft moves it and the vanes slide. Make sure to clean the hub too. It must move freely.
+DieselTechRon thanks a lot! I'll clean it up real good and put in a new unison ring. Thanks again
hi ron, will the truck smoke a little after putting anti seize in the turbo?
Thanks for the video, it worked great.

TheTruckFanatic actuator failure. Unfortunately, you need a new turbo friend.
Can you use regular multi grease for the vains or it has to be that stuff you used

do you have a turbo rebuild video? :} @dieseltechron
Why dont you anti seize the unison ring?

Curt Leake nice!
how hard is it to clean

Fixed the problem yet?
