You never mentioned that Detroit has a tunnel for vehicles that runs from downtown Detroit to Canada, deep under the river. It’s been around for a long time too. Personally I have taken many times to Canada. Some claim it’s the busiest tunnel in the world.
Your suggestion that the blockage led to the decision to build the Gordie Howe is completely wrong. The blockage took place long after the bridge was conceived, highways in Ontario were created to divert trucks to it, and the bridge construction begun.
Or that Covid delayed the project. All construction was classified as an essential service and exempt from lockdowns.
There's also an international tunnel connecting Detroit and Windsor that isn't mentioned
Exactly. This bridge wasin the works long before its initial construction AND the blockade of the truckers .
In addition if they can block one bridge they can block two bridges.
Government controlled media
The fact they incorporated pedestrian walkway and trail connections on both sides was a awesome idea
Too bad it pops out right at the sewage treatment plant in Windsor and is just generally in a rough (looking) neighborhood
@@lakaiskates8064lol😂
It's not an awesome idea. It was just a normal idea. Trails to nowhere. No one in Detroit rides bikes.
I agree, and he says it will be free.....for a minute. I honestly can't see that lasting long. The Bluewater Bridge at the mouth of Lake Huron offered that decades ago, then customs found it to be a problem
@@zipperpillow no body rides bikes in Detroit? Tell me you're not from Detroit without telling me 😂
The naming of this bridge after Gordie Howe is a fitting tribute to a famous hockey player whose sport is common to both great nations,a symbol of their neighborly spirits, and economic goals.
Absolutely! Naming the bridge after Gordie Howe is a fantastic tribute to a legend who embodies the spirit of both nations. Hockey is a shared passion, and the bridge itself represents a symbol of strong neighborly ties and economic collaboration between the US and Canada. Great points!
Except that Gordie Howe is a SK boy.
I really don't think they will keep that name. Which would be sad.
@@spazoq Except the actual design of the bridge is 2 hockey sticks converging together. so this was always the plan.
@spazoq he played for the Detroit Red Wings which makes it even more appropriate. They will keep the name.
A Gordie Howe hat-trick is a goal, an assist, and a fight
The planning of the new bridge had nothing to do with the 2022 blockade
Great point! The bridge project started well before the 2022 blockade. That event just highlighted how essential the Gordie Howe International Bridge is. Thanks for your insight!
It's fucking annoying how the mass media complex lies about everything
Yep. This is when I stopped and closed the video.
Agree, this is just a political statement, this was in the plans for several years now that got delayed due to legal problems for years
@@catinthehat5080 Legal problems and delays can always be traced to Liberals and their corrupt ways. They all need their kickbacks before progress is allowed.
I think this bridge is going to lead to a HUGE resurgence of the Windsor/Detroit area. It is a beautiful bridge.
I TOTALLY AGREE! IT IS A MASTERPIECE JUST AMAZING IF YOU ARE IN THE AREA PLEASE GO SEE IT.
Is it just a coincidence if you notice during construction that the bridge has a width of 9 lanes.....Gordie Howes jersey number?
Wow ; I had no idea about this bridge. I grew up in Windsor years ago .... so good to see the stranglehold of the Ambassador bridge being removed. Many thanks for this.
Glad you enjoyed it
The ambassador bridge sidewalk on the south side used to allow pedestrians and bicycles but has been closed for decades.
Matty was not making money from it.
I'm watching from suburban Detroit. Can't wait to see the finished bridge.
Cheers from Windsor. I have been doing the same from my side of the river.
1. The blockades happened well after it was conceived and building even began.
2. this page almost read word for word through the wiki page of the bridge as his commentary.
this channel feels liike AI
The bridge support is not designed to look like a large A. It’s designed to look like two hockey sticks together.
You're absolutely right! The design is actually meant to evoke two hockey sticks converging at the top. Interesting how different perspectives can come into play, right?
You’re both wrong! Research it and correct your statements.
@@mrgoggles1963 you must know something special that everyone else in the world doesn’t. You might want to takeoff the tinfoil hat…

@@mrgoggles1963 i mean they arent wrong. you would know that if you've researched it. the patnership released a PDF file with an overveiw of features. its hockey sticks.
2 big missed facts 1 the bridge is needed to ease the traffic that is backed up for many miles cutting Windsor in half . And the tunnel between Windsor and Detroit is not even mentioned
Hmm... I skipped down here after a few minutes because nothing had been said about the tunnel. It's more than a minor point to omit, in my view. Kinda stunning if, as you say, he never mentioned it at all. Also, I never knew that the traffic backed up bad in Windsor. Hopefully the new bridge will help with that. 👍
Neither is the train tunnel that also goes underneath the Detroit river and connects to Windsor.
The tunnel is way to small to serve as a meaningful international crossing, it mostly used by local traffic. And aren’t trucks banned from it?
A major point. Kind of sad to think Mega Builds does so poorly at easy things to research. I'd almost say they HAD to try hard not to mention the tunnel, which was the first of its kind, an international border, linking two nations underwater. It's like they wanted to artificially escalate the absurdity of it all. Like some bufoons were managing our infrastructure. No, only the classless person was Moroun who blockaded progress along the NAFTA superhighway for nearly all his God forsaken life. Good riddance.
@@Kishanth.J The Ambassador bridge carries about 10,000 commercial trucks a day and 4,000 passenger cars. The Windsor tunnel carried 12,000 passenger cars. They are relatively equivalent. Imagine how long it would take to get across the bridge with just about double the vehicles going across? It is a pretty easy question to research. Do you work for Mega Builds? bahah
Geordie Howe’s career also spanned five decades.
He played till his 50s but he only played pro hockey for 32 years. Still pretty much unthinkable for today's standards.
As of 5/2/2024, the deck spans from each respective side is just 15 meters (50 feet) apart. What an immense and impressive structure.
I'm surprised you didn't mention the fact that the Canadian government is covering the majority of the costs of construction.
While the US benefits from trade with Canada, Canada benefits far more from access to US markets. The vast majority of Canadians live along the US border and are far more connected to us than to each other. And projects like this just further cement that reality.
Technically the costs are split, Canada is just front the US' share and will be repaid via tolls that would have gone to the US
The new bridge solves a problem he didn’t mention in the video. The Ambassador Bridge runs straight into Downtown Windsor. The new bridge will connect major highways, which will ease traffic congestion in both Detroit and Windsor’s downtown areas
Plus the new and upgraded boxer neck point to speed up traffic flow.
Forgot the train tunnel and the Detroit Windsor tunnel...
The lack of mentioning the train tunnel was a weird omission considering the ferries were discussed, but the automobile tunnel only really needed to be mentioned to state that it cannot take commercial trucks and thus the reliance on the bridge for commerce.
It's ridiculous the important Ambassador Bridge is in the hands of a private citizen; one that didn't give a damn about his country, trade or anything other than his own greed and control. So glad his family's objections to a new bridge were overruled. What a disgusting legacy that has left many parts of Detroit a mess. Time will tell whether his heirs are as greedy. This was a great video showing the history and progress on the new Gordie Howe Bridge. Looking forward to its opening!
They only started to fix up the ambassador bridge when it was an evitable that this project was going through. They were just letting it decline and decline.
Spot on about Matty.Going to lose a lot of money on Fuel sales which he got a Favorable Tax break on
It’s not enough to have billions that they’ll never spend in a lifetime. They want to hold up progress so they can have more. Never satisfied.
Exactly. @@janisblack2183
Marty has done more for Detroit and Michigan than you ever will. Greed and control best describes the new bridge that literally goes up in price by the billions EVERY year. How many millions of tax $$ did they blow on garter snakes and fake climate change? Pretty sure an addition for semi trucks on the ambassador bridge would have been a lot cheaper and smarter.
I can not wait till this project is done. I am so tired of the construction zone going down I-75. Still its awesome to see this bridge going up. Its been needed for decades.
So glad to see this bridge nearing completion! :)
What a beast, those involved must be proud to see it's completion and Gordie Howes' family must be honored to have their father's name on it. All I have is a plaque on my garden gate that no one sees and it will be replaced I'm sure when I'm gone.
The bridge is so tall, you can see the Michigan tower when you drive northbound on Toledo Rd from Eureka Rd in Southgate, Michigan. That's about 8 1/2 miles (13500 Meters) away.
You can also see both towers from I-94 eastbound near Southfield, right where the big Uniroyal tire is
722 ft. i have been up there and you can indeed see a long ways away.
Just drove by the bridge the other day and took some new photos.
Not only the bridge, but the streets and highway changes in the southwest Detroit area. It's an incredible feat and political drama aside, the bridge is impressive, indeed.
I live in SW Detroit so I can't wait to see the bridge finish.
Impressive and Beautiful !! Thank you
Gordie was the OG of Red Wings hockey. Offense, defense, and he could fight like a bruiser.
So far, the bridge looks great, I can see it on my way to work. I can't wait to drive across it one day soon.
Fingers crossed!

I live in Windsor and I was roommates with an Iron Worker who works on this bridge every day. Very exciting! I can't wait for the first drive across.
Very cool!
Now living in Western Canada close to retirement, I remember as a Truck driver crossing into the USA on a regular basis back in the 80's upto the mid 2000's and I will say that this project will be well worth it for several years down the road for future truckers, much faster flow through for sure, but I remember those very long line up's sometimes taking hours to cross, having to go into customs and sorting out issues regarding broker mistakes and such, the times are a changing for the good I suppose.
This is the only place where Canadians can drive north to enter Continental USA
Google the Bluewater Bridges and you might learn something new 😂
@@CanadiansInCarsGettingCocky Bluewater Bridge is East West so that’s irrelevant
There's a tunnel in Detroit, the blue water bridge in Port Huron, and you can cross in Sioux St. Marie.... how can you comment and not know these things? You.can also ferry acrossed the river.
@@FastBowtie388 you did not understand my comment, read it again, Canada is north of the USA but Canadians can drive north into the USA in only one place and that is Detroit, the Blue Water Bridge is East West therefore irrelevant, look at a map and learn your geography 🙄

When I read 'Gordie Howe' I was like 👍
I took my son over the old bridge and in the tunnel last time I was home. Hoping to make it back this year for the holidays.
Fun fact: Moroun's attempts to stop the GH Bridge project included trying to force a constitutional amendment where any bridge projects in Michigan would have to be approved by referendum of the general public; emphasis on "any". If it had passed, it would mean that even bridge projects that handled domestic traffic couldn't be even started unless it's on the ballot.
WOW LOOKS GREAT!
It's impressive how fast it's going now. Kudo's to all who worked on it.
Nobody in Canada is asking who is Gordie Howe lol
Or Michigan
Seriously, it's like naming something in New York after Babe Ruth. Not exactly a mystery.
Design look very similar to Pont de Normandy (cable strayed bridge) crossing the Seine river's mouth in France delivered in 1995, which was France's favorite bridge for years before the amazing Millau bridge has brought it to a new level (even literally) 🎉 Glad to see such a nice design at such a location 😘
There’s a very similar bridge built over the Maumee river in Toledo, Ohio (an hours drive south of Detroit FWIW) that opened in 2007. The community voted to choose that bridge type among several candidates. It’s a lovely structure.
I wonder if border guards on both sides of the new bridge will be pricks like they are on the old bridge?
All of them have various personality types, tho. I had seen the nicest one to the ugly one. Basically, you need to be honest with them, then you are good afterward.
Yes
In order to cross you must receive a Gordie Howe bodycheck adminstered by the border guards.
Of course.
As long as you don't be snippy with them, they're cool with you...have a smile on your face when approaching with your ID.
Can't wait to drive across it, the ambassador bridge is a pain .
there is also a tunnel that connects the 2 cities.
wow and to think When I left Windsor they were Just starting to clear the Canadian side, so much been done :O
Edit: you totally forgot to mention the Tunnel my man...not just 1 bridge, Windsor-Detroit Underwater Tunnel was and still is one coolest tunnel here but had its fare share of scary history.
Wow, you're right! It's amazing how much progress they've made since then. The bridge is definitely coming together.
And thanks for mentioning the Detroit-Windsor Tunnel! You're absolutely right, it's a historic landmark and a crucial part of the Windsor-Detroit connection. We might have to do another video exploring the fascinating history of both the tunnel and the new bridge! Meanwhile, check this one with some of upcoming amazing underwater tunnels: ruclips.net/video/y8j0d4u_I7U/видео.html
My brother in law is a mechanic for the tunnel.
great video - except for the blockade part that was incorrect - As a local working close to the bridge and knowing some of the people working on the project it was great to see this coverage.
A couple of points, long before the Ambassador bridge there was a railway tunnel. There is also a road tunnel. Also, this will take the traffic off the city streets, as currently the 401 traffic has to pass over them, to reach the Ambassador bridge.
I crossed ambassador a week ago cool to see it almost done.
I love this new bridge.
Thanks! We think it's pretty impressive too. The Gordie Howe Bridge is a major undertaking that will benefit the region for years to come.

Yes I have heard that from Bob Jones
This bridge design has a flaw, which we people in British Columbia experience every time it snows. The snow freezes on the cable, which happens to be travelling above the roadway, and when the cable offloads the snow or ice, it tumbles down on the motorists below, creating a dangerous hazard.
The new-ish I-280 bridge in Toledo, Ohio is of the same style and oftentimes in winter the center lanes are closed due to the exact issue you detailed. Hopefully they’ve sufficiently addressed that issue for this span.
@@michaelrains64295 I believe they have heat to prevent on this new design.
They plan to sprinkle pigeon food on the cables each morning and it's hoped that the increased pigeon activity will keep the snow and ice melted in all but the fiercest storms. At least, that's what I heard at the bar the other day from some guy named Brian.
To my untrained eye, the cables look white, so perhaps a teflon-like sheath to try and minimise that? Seems unlikely that they wouldn't have considered it at all, that's not usually how engineering works.
Did you know the only traffic lights between Mexico and Montreal Quebec on the NAFTA superhighway the only traffic lights are the ones in WIndsor on Huron Church road. That is crazy. With the new bridge that will remove those lights. I can see it from my house
Very cool video!
Thank you very much!
No one locally ever calls it the Herb Grey pkwy, we all say 401.
I lived in the Windsor Essex county my entire life, I live about half an hr away from the ambassador bridge
As a Canadian, build more bridges as what we've seen in Baltimore recently what can happen very quickly to your supply chain. And the truckers blocking the bridge, fighting for your freedom and mine, had NOTHING to do with us building another bridge >.
You're absolutely right, strong cross-border infrastructure is essential! The Gordie Howe Bridge will definitely enhance capacity and improve trade flow between our two nations. As for the Ambassador Bridge blockade, it certainly highlighted the need for alternative routes to keep essential goods moving. This bridge is a long-term project designed to ensure a more resilient and efficient transportation system for the future, benefiting both Canada and the United States. Thanks for your comment!
@@MegaBuilds5280 im surprised that it took them that long to get a second bridge built and that they had to go through the court system to entertain that guy's monopoly on it when in reality the government should have just said, here's x amount, it's ours now.
You're right, mega-projects can get bogged down in legal battles and delays. Balancing public needs, private interests, and regulations is tricky. It's a whole other side to these projects beyond the impressive construction.

I'm retired from semi truck driving automotive components around Michigan. Many hours were (are) wasted waiting for loaded trailers coming across the Ambassador Bridge from Canada.
The new bridge should boost trade dramatically
Nicely done. Check out Billy Kyle for some fantastic drone footage of the bridge- he had permission to fly in this restricted airspace ( like the camera operator here) and really captured it.
Despite the talk about cooperation between the U.S. and Canada, notice that the U.S. government chose not to become involved in the project. Detroit is a partner and will pay for their half through future tolls collected.
I though Canada got exclusive right for tolls, since it promised to pay for the portion the Michigan government was stalling on committing to.
CANADA is paying the entire bill.
@@thebbgrouplimited210 JUST VERY SAD.
Also, the Ambassador Bridge is falling apart. You can look down upon the river through holes in the concrete roadway. Moroun must have had naked pictures of somebody. The blockades had nothing to do with the bridge. It was planned a decade or more before the blockades. Get your shlt straight. I won't watch the rest of the the video, so I don't know if you mention that it is Canada that is paying for the entire bridge because Michigan is all but broke.
Thanks for the info! The Ambassador Bridge, being older, requires more upkeep. The Gordie Howe Bridge, a new project, will offer a modern crossing. Construction began in 2018, well before recent protests (which did highlight the need for alternative routes). Canada covers upfront costs through a public-private partnership, with tolls planned to recover expenses. Accuracy is important to us, so feel free to ask any questions!
@LincolnHawk-bk5yr:
Michigan isn't broke.
This is my hometown its been built in
The sooner the new bridge is completed the better for both the U.S. and Canada. I can’t imagine how the Ambassador Bridge became owned by one super greedy old man. Of course he tried everything to stop construction for the new crossing. Hopefully, the new expected opening will come to fruition.👍👍🇨🇦🇺🇸
Its sad actually. They named the Parkway to this New bridge after the man who made the sale of the Old Bridge possible..
The man needed billions more to enter heaven. Yep. Heaven let him in. But the weight of gold on his shoulders was so much, he fell into hell.
I hope the bridge can be opened on March 31st, Gordie's birthday.
There should be some hockey stick placements across the bridge.
Let's hear a shoutout for the Ambassador bridge. Operating since 1929 and carrying a lot more traffic than it was designed for. That's 95 years, baby, and still going strong. The Gordie Howe bridge is designed for 125 years of service, so at least the designers are setting their goals high. When I was trucking, I made a few trips across the Ambassador Bridge and never had excessive delays, but the Canadian border agents asked stupid questions during Covid. Apparently they thought they were doctors.
You obviously haven’t seen the condition of the Ambassador Bridge. I cringe everytime I have to use it.
And now, due to traffic on really bad days, it can take 2 hours from the Canadian side at College Ave. to clear US Customs.
The Ambassador Bridge is still looking good to me...
So much of the info on this wrong. I live in the Detroit area and there is so much more. At the point I'm writing this they failed to mention the tunnel underneath the river. Just a small error I'm sure.
I don't think the old bridge will be torn down
I go to the new bridge at least once a week take pictures and a walk at Ojibway Park
man I miss that park when I was in Windsor, they did alot to that place before I left
I hope both Detroit and Windsor use the new bridge as a reason to remove the large highways connecting the Ambassador bridge. Moving the highway out of the core could improve the cities looks.
You know there’s a tunnel? Best restaurant in Windsor, Tunnel bbq, is there.
The new bridge has nothing to do with the protests. If it happens again, they will just block both hahah
Can’t believe a private guy owns such an important piece of infrastructure. Even by implying the other bridge shouldn’t be considered he delayed construction and created several more years of non competitive profits for himself. I understand the public’s distrust of the government… but I think they should equally distrust the motives of wealthy private owners
I'm surprised that the author mentioned the trucking blockade. I live near this bridge and construction was already underway when 2022 happened, so...
Love it

There is also a tunnel
I hope the ice on the cable doesn't melt off and smash windshields like they do in British Columbia. It's the cables crossing over the roadway.
Living just outside Windsor, i never heard of this bridge lol
Bike lane-- cool.
Oh I get it now, this had nothing to do with a pissing match between Matty Moroun and the Canadian Federal government. It's to make the weather gooder. Wow, just wow!
Does anyone remember the Gordie Howe hockey arena?
Presented horizontally:)
You must not be Canadian cuz nobody calls it ice hockey
😂
It is very disappointing that the US government chose not to contribute anything to this project. Mostly, Canada paid for everything, with only Michigan buying some of the land.
For Canada, the bridge was an absolute priority. A huge percentage of our trade with the US goes across the border at Detroit (around 30% IIRC). The Ambassador Bridge (and Matty Maroun) is a tremendous and costly bottleneck. Although the Canadian Government will be repaid through the bridge tolls, the real win will be the savings in time and increased trade.
THANK OUR WONDERFUL GOVERNOR!
My favorite part about the Gordie Howe bridge is that it screws the Moroun family!
