The xenomorph itself may work in full light but similar to the shark from Jaws, Ridley Scott felt that they could never shake off the "man in a rubber suit" issue that hurt many horror films prior due to the limits of technology at the time. That's why they always had the Alien cast in shadow and barely gave the audience a clear full view shot of it. Working around this limitation payed off handsomely as it made for an engaging experience that allowed for the audience's own curiosity and fears to fill in the blanks.
every horror you see in bright light almost imediately loses some of it's scaryness. i think that's the reason most of modern horrorfilms doesn't work anymore. they tend to show way to much.
Correction: Dan didn't contact Giger because of the book "Necromicon" but rather through the contacts of Alejandro Jodorowsky, the director of El Topo. Both Dan and Giger were working on a cancelled Dune adaptation that had Jodorowsky conducting, and through that production the two became closer friends.

lol, in 5 minutes two big youtube channels upload a video about iconic monster movies. The other one is the film theorist, but this one is a lot better
Great video. But I am disappointed you didn't mention Jodorowsky's Dune. Most of the Alien creative team (O'Bannon, Giger, Chris Foss) met during pre-production of that movie. When it was cancelled O'Bannon started working on the Alien script, and down the line convinced Ridley Scott to work with Giger. Btw, the documentary Jodorowsky's Dune is amazing.
I had been taken to see Alien when it was released when I was a kid, scared the hell out of me. At the time and after that I didn't buy any books on the making of the movie so it's great to discover vids like yours that allow me to learn decades later. So to find out there was an actual human skull inside the alien head was somewhat shocking. Very well presented vid, well done.
The xenomorph really is something special, and so is Giger's work in general. He basically created an entire genre of visual art, and a diverse one at that
actually H.R giger was also just inspired by another artists who put that biomechanical stuff long before Giger hisself perfected it, something u can research urself from ur home computer
Oh man, I wish you'd gone into the specific fears that the xenomorph dips into. I recently watched Children of the Corn and then looked up the background influences of the Alien movie.. CotC was awful by comparison. Useless, helpless "heroine," patronizing protagonist who saves the day while the women and children watch on, etc. etc. This came out in 1984. And then there's Alien. Badass, no-nonsense woman protagonist, an alien creature that prays on and inverts our primal fears of being "penetrated" and impregnated parasitically, the cold void of space... in 1979. Then I understood why this movie was so loved and vastly influential. It used and flipped so many tropes, tapped into such deep fears, and did it all so well.. Thanks for doing this video, this movie and creature design deserve it!
Thank you for these videos Kristian! I never really thought about the aesthetics of Alien before and it is awesome to know about it. I hope to see more of your work.
This is why I'm one of those rare individuals who prefers Alien to Aliens. Aliens basically made the aliens just dangerous giant bugs. Alien gave the alien a mystique that made it what it was; perfect organism.
I liked Aliens it was well done, but I get what you're saying, it was that moment when people start "eff-ing" with something that was already good. Cameron was the one who first tweeked the creature design, I think just the head of the creature, and added the queen alien. The queen wasn't bad, but it was like you said making the über scary creature more associated with ants/bugs.
Ive always preferred Alien for a number of reason. Lol I thought I was the only one. Aliens is still a fantastic film though and probably my favourite sequel ever besides Empire Strikes Back and T2.
A lot of us prefer Alien, although Aliens was great. Personally I like all of the films in the franchise to a degree, but the first two just have a certain feel that the others can't match, and out of the two it's better accentuated in the first one.
Both movies were perfect for what they were. Alien was an artsy, purely horror sci-fi film. And Aliens was a sci fi action film with horror elements. But both movies were clearly very invested in the story and the material they were working with. Scott fully embraced Giger's work the moment he laid eyes on it. And James Cameron went quite out of his way to make sure the sequel could get the proper funding to happen. Not just for money, but because he legitimately wanted a good sequel that expands upon and fully utilizes the assets of the first movie, along with his own take on it. Cameron was behind Terminator as well, he's no stranger to sci fi horror. But he also did what he does best, an action movie.
It really is true, the xenomorph is scary, but it's more than that, it's also beautiful. Monster designs usually go for the scare factor and that's it, but with the xenomorph it becomes scary because you have to admit that it is beautiful as well.
Seriously dude, your videos are some of the best on RUclips, and I am so glad to have discovered you so early on. This was awesome. The first time I saw Alien all the way through, was only about 7 years ago. They played it at Hollywood Forever Cemetery in Los Angeles during one of their movie nights. So yeah... I watched Alien in a cemetery with about 1,000 other people, and it was deathly silent until something moved and made you jump, then everyone screamed. It was phenomenal, and so was this video. Keep it up. Really looking forward to whatever you've got coming down the line.

Another great video Kaptain. Always loved the design of the alien, and knew it was inspired by HR Giger but had no idea that he was so heavily involved in it
these videos fuck me up, man. I haven't seen this much genuine creativity and dedication in a video in so long, it's honestly so inspiring. I will love any and all videos you come out with.
Your videos are always so well edited and the way you present them, and yourself is honestly done well. The way you explain things is very... _smooth_ if that makes any sense. Anyways, I just wanted to say your videos are a joy for me to watch and I look forward to every one of them even if the subject matter doesn't entirely interest me. I'm excited to see what comes next.
The genius that was the late H R Giger will be missed. His work to me is such a captivating and beautiful mystery that I could spend days admiring a single piece and still be awed by the amount of detail and the completely foreign oddity of it all. I'm far from an artist nor could my views on art be mistaken for that of an expert, but I am confident in suggesting Giger's work to any fan of surrealist style art and those who enjoy seeing the darker side of a genius mind's work.
Thank you for another amazing video. Alien has always been one of my favorite horror movies, with it's excellent blend of needing to escape and needing to fight back. Even before I knew the difference, the practical effects were astounding compared to the cgi of today. The facehugger looked like the kind of creature I could actually see, as if I could feel it from the images. I hope you do video around anime soon though. The symbolism in something like Tokyo Ghoul or Death Note just feels like its begging for someone like you to explore it. Just a recommendation though. Do your own thing, all your videos are great anyway.

Just subscribed, and this is the second video I'm watching of your's. I'm blown away by the research and quality of the videos! Keep it up! I love that you used Home as the background music through the video. Probably one of my favorite music artists right now.
Design of the Alien is great. Its not some disease monster that people love to make (cause its so easy). Like i hated how the early Warhammer artists would make orcs appear horrifying by just painting their skin full of pus oozing pimples. Sure it makes them look horrifying. But its the same kind of horrifying as when you see a diseased rat. Its just lazy. When designing monsters or aliens, i would like designers to look at real animals and try to figure out what makes them look intimidating or scary. And not just try to figure how to use porridge and a bit of food coloring to make a monsters... Okay, im just sick of cancer monsters being the default type of monster that designers go to :(
What a beautiful appreciation of the man himself and of his truly outstanding creation! Your respect and appreciation really shone through in this brief video, and as a result of your superb video you have a new subscriber that appreciates your excellent work.
is it that good? i've always put it off. then i saw it on reddit the other day from someone hailing it as one of the best things they have ever seen and with much support from le reddit army. is it that good?
Btw. Most of his drawings were inspired by Pagano-Satanism, H.P. Lovecraft and his (Giger's) LSD trips (and nightmares too). So all the Alien fans - praise the LSD!

Gotta come back every once in a great while to watch your videos. Even to this day, they’re still on another level.
Great work!
Another great video Kaptain. Always loved the design of the alien, and knew it was inspired by HR Giger but had no idea that he was so heavily involved in it
You deserve WAY more suscribers
these videos fuck me up, man. I haven't seen this much genuine creativity and dedication in a video in so long, it's honestly so inspiring. I will love any and all videos you come out with.
Shame the man didn't get more press for his work. I only learned about him when I went into my animation degree
The father of aliens. Perfect
this is amazing. alien goes down as one of my favorite movies of all time and giger as one my top favorite artists
I'm right on time.
Keep up the amazing work! Its well appreciated and I know you'll do more amazing things in the future
"Arousing"? Whatever floats your boat man.
Maybe not arousing, but the xenomorph is based around highly sexual themes.
Look at more of Giger art. It's definitely sexual.
It doesn't have to be sexual arousal
Perhaps the term does not mean what you think it means
There is actually an audience for xenomorph porn, strange as it may sound
The genius that was the late H R Giger will be missed. His work to me is such a captivating and beautiful mystery that I could spend days admiring a single piece and still be awed by the amount of detail and the completely foreign oddity of it all. I'm far from an artist nor could my views on art be mistaken for that of an expert, but I am confident in suggesting Giger's work to any fan of surrealist style art and those who enjoy seeing the darker side of a genius mind's work.
I'm pretty sure H.R. Giger is an alien himself.
People like him, understand just been yourself don’t act like the masses.
Do your own thing, all your videos are great anyway.
alien is better than predator, and i love predator...
Agreed, Alien, the original, is a masterpiece...
Oddly enough it was James Cameron(who directed aliens) who made the suggestion for the predator design to incorporate a face with mandibles
Nicolas I agree, but its pretty unfair to really try and compare considering Predator itself is very inspired by Alien
they are both excellent, it's just a preference thing; alpha predator or alpha hunter...
Nicolas I mean as films, you can't really compare one movie to the movie that directly inspired it.
Thanks for every video you make man
Me: OoOoO KK has a new video up *clicks link*insta-like without even watching video*share on facebook*posts obligatory "Do Avatar: The Last Airbender next comment"*watches video*
as long as it is about the original animated series and not the live-action movie...
KaptainKristian might be the only one who's videos I am always watching as soon as they come out, love it man
First time I heard an American pronouncing Giger last name correctly
Metro Nerds I only ever saw his name in writing for the first 20 years of my life never spoken so. Before the internet most Americans never did
dis gonna be a good video, in all seriousness the attention to detail and swift editing makes for a visceral experience
Time to start back at red thumbnails
Woah, I never noticed that. Good eye!
+SamuelAdams1994 he posted it on twitter.
I think purple is next?
Just subscribed, and this is the second video I'm watching of your's. I'm blown away by the research and quality of the videos! Keep it up!
I love that you used Home as the background music through the video. Probably one of my favorite music artists right now.
DO A VIDEO ON DEATH GRIPS
I adore Giger's artwork and visited 3 of his exhibitions in Vienna. Such a loss to the world. Great, tribute video.
One on Avatar the last airbender
Yes, please!!!
yes!
is it that good? i've always put it off. then i saw it on reddit the other day from someone hailing it as one of the best things they have ever seen and with much support from le reddit army. is it that good?
yes it has everything great animation story acting action and great ending
Tyler Roach
i'll give it a shot in the future. any other ones to recommend? non anime? i'm more into japanese animation.
Amazing video once again. Alien is in my top 5 films of all time much love
Btw. Most of his drawings were inspired by Pagano-Satanism, H.P. Lovecraft and his (Giger's) LSD trips (and nightmares too). So all the Alien fans - praise the LSD!
Raimudal Lezel Sabmetbe-Rotha Lovecraft was sooo influential... It's ridiculous.
Not related to this video exactly but I just wanted to say how much I appreciate that you link to the ambient background music in your videos. I watch way too many RUclips channels that don't do that.
Inb4 viral!
Almost 200,000 subs. Channel's growing fast and no one deserves it more. Keep it up, Kaptain
ANOTHER KAPTAINKRISTIAN VIDEO
This is the best channel I've ever seen, he puts so much effort into his videos and it really pays off.
