Back in 1997 I watched a movie called Gattaca. Good movie. The futuristic society drove around in classic cars with electric engines. I thought wow what a good idea.
For all you rich dudes out there wanting something to spend your money on, here's an idea: Buy up a whole fleet of used rental cars - Hyundais i30s, Toyota Carollas etc, - say 100 of them, set up a small factory, hire staff, then get busy converting them all to electric (the cars that is!). You'd think the volume would keep the costs relatively low, through the bulk purchasing of parts and the standardisation of the conversion process, because they'd all be the same model of car. Sound feasible? I recon if you could get a 6-10 year old converted Carolla costing the same as a new conventional one, you might get people considering it. Just a thought.
Great if you want to camp in your backyard or if you're a Google drone making $250,000 a year but can't afford a 1 bedroom in Silicon Valley. Live in your electric VW and plug into Google HQs.
I have a 1975 Monza Corvair. I bought it to be a showcase car for a program to train kids on auto engineering by turning classic cars into EVs. My partner flaked on me, but I’m gonna figure it out. This is inspiring. ❤
I can't wait till I can afford to convert a Fiero to an EV. I have thought about getting one though out the years but they are so old now that having it as a daily driver would be out of the question. I had one back in the late 80s and mid 90s. Would still have the car if it hadn't been rear ended and and the insurance company hadn't totaled it. The thought of having one again, that is quicker and faster, more reliable, zero emissions, and cheaper to run makes me hopeful for the future.
I recall my chemistry teacher telling us that you can actually turn vintage cars into electric cars b/c of the shape of the hood. Iirc, it has to do w/ the motor, and is even possible to do yourself.

Making classic cars electric should be illegal, Once you remove its original engine its not a classic anymore and alot of the fun with a classic car is the sound and smell from a big old engine
The gear head in me hates electric automobiles because they are stupid simple, dead quite and you can't go 800+miles on one charge (well you could with a battery the size of a house lol) The other side of me is a cheap ass and I have to say living in so Cal a solar array would be pretty neat producing free electricity and I would love to stick up a finger Governor Moonbeam for his high gas tax.
Atomic Reverend Alexander that's the purpose of the gas tax. To discourage people from buying gas, and encourage use of EVs or other forms of transportation like walking, cycling and public transit. Also to encourage people to live closer to work. It encourages developers to build denser.
CH1PSET I was more thinking out loud,. I know what Governor Moonbeam's thoughts are for doing this. i drive a 460ci 1973 Lincoln Continental (and have off and on for 20 years because it has been way more reliable then any newer car I have owned as long as I keep up on the maintenance). Californias ultra high gas prices effect me worse then most people but even with my terrible fuel mileage< my car is still about .35¢ a mile to drive which is still cheap considering. My reason for my statement is, if I took a older car and electified it, I wouldn't be paying my share of road taxes, cars like the Tesla (for example) get charged a higher registration fee because they don't spend money on fuel so they don't contribute to road repairs, somebody in a gas car pays through registration and in fuel taxes... You could skate through a loop hole and if it was solar powered you sort of abuse the system. A classic gas car has a low registration (my lincoln is $115- this year which for California is cheap), my diesel work truck (that I have to have for my job) is a 1 ton and cost $480- Realistically I won't ever make an electric car and at 40 years old I have thought about buying a later model full-size sedan or SUV that gets better mileage that is paidoff that has already incurred most of its depreciation since registration fees are charged off of the value of the car. Honestly I just need to do what every friend I had growing up did and move out of tree hugging, lberal stronghold that over taxes for everything, including, gas and registration. But that is a conversation on politics and that can lead to arguments....
Grow up, they won’t be sustainable in the future, it’s called innovation and they’re giving these historic vehicles new life and a future that they otherwise wouldn’t have
@@CaptainLetlev yeah say that to all the people who care about these cars who love the way they drive, the way they feel, cuz they were designed with a internal combustion engine not an electric motor.

and shade was covering them too.
I just bought a 67’ impala shell I want to make electric I can’t wait to get started
Making classic cars electric should be illegal, Once you remove its original engine its not a classic anymore and alot of the fun with a classic car is the sound and smell from a big old engine
That's the future. I'm thinking of turning my 1986 Porsche 928 into an electric.
Do it, it's the future
@The Stigs Swedish Cousin stop whining
@The Stigs Swedish Cousin stop being a bitch
LOL!
@@glitch4988 no electric motors belong in new cars not old card
It would be weird going to a classic car show and this is what they show.
The gear head in me hates electric automobiles because they are stupid simple, dead quite and you can't go 800+miles on one charge (well you could with a battery the size of a house lol)
The other side of me is a cheap ass and I have to say living in so Cal a solar array would be pretty neat producing free electricity and I would love to stick up a finger Governor Moonbeam for his high gas tax.
A classic gas car has a low registration (my lincoln is $115- this year which for California is cheap), my diesel work truck (that I have to have for my job) is a 1 ton and cost $480-
Realistically I won't ever make an electric car and at 40 years old I have thought about buying a later model full-size sedan or SUV that gets better mileage that is paidoff that has already incurred most of its depreciation since registration fees are charged off of the value of the car.
Honestly I just need to do what every friend I had growing up did and move out of tree hugging, lberal stronghold that over taxes for everything, including, gas and registration. But that is a conversation on politics and that can lead to arguments....
@@AtomicReverend Gas is $1.99 a gallon here in Texas.
I can't even go more than 450 miles in my gasoline car...
Ha! Ditto
I’m gonna have to beg this man to convert my future 1950s car to electric 😭
Lmao if this happens then LS swapping an rx-7 would be ‘electric swapping/solar swapping/hydrogen swapping’ an RX-7😂😂
Is it possible to do the same with Mercedez urban cars ?
At this point you're just ruining great classic cars, that are very hard to come by now.
@@CaptainLetlev yes they will, Porsche already started the construction of their first synthetic fuel plant in Chile, if everything goes right the internal combustion engines can be even greener than EVs.
Need to visit San Diego with a '70 Charger!!
