Hi Libby (from Australia). You are such a nice, normal relatable person, not one of those impossibly perfect influencers. I have ADHD and am bipolar 2; I have times where my home is pristine (unless you open a cupboard or drawer..) and then it descends into chaos...and the worse it gets, the worse it gets, til I'm totally overwhelmed, can't invite anyone over...I am NOT wealthy, but I employ cleaners once every few weeks to help me. True confession: once, when my dishes situation had got so bad, and they were smelling, I picked them all up, put them in a garbage bag and threw them away!!! Lived off disposable plates for a while, til ingradually replaced things.

    • @SimplyLibbyt

It's probably already been answered, but any cleaner with bleach in it should take stains off the counter. I sometimes leave a cloth that has bleach cleaner on it laying across the stain for an hour or so.
I really appreciate that you were very open to showing what it's like to have depression and trying to push yourself to accomplish this task.
When I heard you say you just wanted to stop and look at your phone, I could relate to that completely. It's my way of escaping too.
Best of luck to you and keep on going.

11:13 is very relatable. I am looking at my comments edit history and see that while it took @SimplyLibbyt 3 hours, it took me 5 days. Today is the 5th day. I will sweeping and mopping the kitchen floor today. Unlike her I gave in and went with my phone, got distracted, etc. I would have felt terrible about this realisation but thanks to years of therapy, I am telling myself that it is okay. My kitchen is clean now.

I'd like to think my kitchen doesnt get like this but it does and the only difference between your method & mine is that id be having mental breakdowns in between cleaning. Its an investment but a big priority for me.

I just want to say how grateful I am for videos like this. When I start letting my care-tasks slide, I usually need a “cleaning-companion” to remind me that there are a series of steps I can take to start making my space (and myself) feel better. Putting on something like this helps me get into action. It’s a win-win. Thanks so much.

If thats all I can do for the day, then I leave it at that. If that motivated me to do more, I'd maybe wipe down the countertops. Then so on and so forth.

I found power to quit, and now digesting what has happened and why I got in such relationship.. The matter of fact, the dishes accumulate and the fridge is disgusting. You see all this but you do not have power to do anything. As soon as I start I feel enormous tiredness and go back to bed.

Just now discovering you, and I’m so grateful for the way you tell your story. As a former story bank coordinator, it is incredibly supportive. I am quite depressed (loosing/grief) and have gone far too long without support so when I try and get started, I find myself sobbing, sitting on my fitball while hours pass by. I get triggered by the catastrophic state of my home. I have a large item to return, for example, which I knew I would need to send back when I saw it. I can’t find any of the mesh covers that came with it. I can’t imagine why they’re not here with all the other parts. This is my day, every day. It has kept me for making any money, and as bad as I make things sound…they are far worse.

Downsizing dishes is a game changer for the family! Making it so we only had like 2 extra plates, or 2 extra bowls, 3 Tupperware’s. It forces you to keep washing dishes instead of adding to it. Game changerrrr… Tupperware gets annoying sometimes tho. But makes it so you have to choose which food you’re truly going to save. Love it on a daily basis.

Also use the liquid bleach,, pour on the stains and let it sit overnight or the day and that should work too.

I organize my dishes before I wash them too, and do the left to the right thing, and I have an order I have to wash my dishes in--- glasses, cups, plates according to size from smallest to largest, same with bowls according to size, serving bowls, bakeware (like casserole dishes), jars, silverware, pots, then pans. I have a black metal over the sink dish rack too, but since I live alone I just keep the few dishes I use most often in it all the time, a few small plates, a pasta bowl, and a cereal bowl, plus a couple of cups. Anything else I put away. Makes it so much easier. P.S. Was looking for cleaning vids and yours is the only one I watched all the way through and I even subscribed to your channel. You're definitely not insane with organising your dishes before you do them ❤ our brains are wired in a way where we work better when there is a reward. The reward being in this situation is your dishes being done. I personally start with what i hate washing the most so for example ill start with cutlery, then move onto pots ect, then cups then bowls and leave plates till last... when you complete each task it's like a little reward cause you can physically see you're making the list go down 😅❤ thanks for this video cause it's helped me feel better and helped me do my own "depression kitchen" ❤❤

I don't know if someone said it, but re: coffee (and tea) stains: baking soda! I make a paste with baking soda, a few drops of dish soap and a bit of water (it shouldn't be too runny, more like toothpaste), and then scrub this paste on stains. You can leave it for a few minutes if you want, and then rinse. It also does miracles in stained mugs.
I don't have any tips for completely removing turmeric stains, but the baking soda paste may help a bit.

For anyone with tumeric and other stains on their kitchen surfaces, I mix up a paste of clothes detergent powder and water, cover the stains and then put cling film over it. Leave for a few hours or even overnight, remove the cling film and scrub the stains before rinsing. You might have to repeat this, if the stain is really bad or has been there for a while.
You can also use toothpaste and an old toothbrush to scrub the stain/s away.

I make myself run a sink of hot soapy water as step #1 before I ever start cooking so I can easily wash as I go. Makes a big difference bc the dishes are almost done by the time the food is ready. If I’m having a challenging day, I at least rinse off the dishes & cutlery or set them in a bowl of water. I motivate myself by thinking how glad I’ll be to have avoided the mess later.

I watch Auri and she uses chlorine for those kinds of stains. Also, I’m diagnosed with dysthymia (they call it a different name now, it’s basically long term, chronic depression), anxiety, and adhd. One thing that has helped me immensely is becoming a minimalist. I don’t have too much because it just becomes too much for my brain, my eyes, and my lack of energy to deal with. I would suggest decluttering your kitchen to make it less overwhelming. If you only have 4 cups to clean, you won’t have as much to do and you will be forced to get into daily (or every other day maybe), types of habits with cleaning dishes. I have to do my habits daily or every other day otherwise I feel like trash and the stuff builds up. I mean, I have a coffee mug collection of 10 mugs, but I never get all 10 dirty. Everything else I only have 4 of. I used to have way more dishes and my kitchen would look like a bomb went off and I’d have a freaking meltdown just looking at it. Own less. It helps. Trust me.

@SimplyLibbyt I commented yesterday that videos like this one help me when my care tasks start slipping, but I’ll also say that videos from folks like Dana K. White, and Dawn at “The Minimal Mom” really helped me to downsize when I needed to move and to get rid of a lot of my stuff so I could fit into my new, smaller home. I really benefit from having companions in any of the tasks that feel overwhelming, so I put on some of their videos as “body doubles”, but also because when they talk about things to declutter, and about their decluttering process, it really helps to keep my mind focused on that process too for a while, rather than getting distracted, or overwhelmed by the task before me. As others have mentioned, I, too, have the urge to run away into my phone, and so putting videos on my phone that pull me up from the couch and help me get into action is my way of using the urge to reach for my phone to my advantage. I usually use the search term “depression cleaning” for when I’m feeling overwhelmed and resisting doing dishes or laundry-folding, or putting stuff away. I used the search terms “declutter”, “destash”, “moving declutter” or just looked up those two channels on RUclips. It’s worked for me to also type each/all of those same search terms in my podcast app, especially because having something happening on a screen is a double-edged sword: sometimes it’s motivating, but sometimes it’s distracting, depending on the kind of video. I’ve recently been watching videos from Midwest Magic Cleaning, and Aurikatariina because, as professional cleaners, they have a process they repeat every time, no matter what kind of mess they’re approaching, and it helps remind me to be more methodical and give me a consistent starting point, too.
Also, longer videos “companion” me for longer and I don’t have to stop to find a new video as often in the middle of a task (where I run the risk of the distraction-powers of my phone taking over). I hope these thoughts help anyone who is interested in decluttering as well as cleaning. I think both processes are worthwhile, and I’m so grateful to people who make videos about them, because I regularly need the support when it comes to letting things go, and for returning what I do have to its home when I’m feeling overwhelmed.

    • @curiositydrawsme9180
      @curiositydrawsme9180 10 месяцев назад

@Lindster2012 I love Auri’s videos! And I agree. I was never able to consistently keep a clean home before I downsized to move to my new home. Now that I have fewer possessions, I notice that, in general, I experience more ease in my home, but that I do experience distress and anxiety when something new comes into the home that I have no place for. Well-meant gifts are a confusing experience for me, as my home is VERY small, and already full of what I’ve chosen to keep. Objects that don’t have a home add to my clutter-distress, even as it’s nice that people think of me kindly and feel the urge to give me things. I think I need to reengage with the decluttering/downsizing process in-depth again because lately I’ve been feeling overwhelmed that there’s become a backlog, and I need to free up surfaces again. Thanks for the reminder that decluttering and downsizing can make upkeep (and consequently, mental wellness) so much easier.

I do the dishes organizing too. For me I think it's because the shir amount and the lack of space to work in is just overwhelming. If all the plates are together there's so much more room and I can just throw them together in the sink.
However from a logical standpoint it's probably more work to stack everything first.
After watching some ADHD cleaning videos I'm thinking of buying a container that fits into my sink and stack in that and maybe a tray where I eat, that way everything is contained and whenever I feel ready to clean or need the sink I can move those around.

Try having a tall container ( like a large yogurt container) on your counter or in your sink with soapy water in it and train everyone to put their used utensils in it to soak. This does two things, keeps them from attacking you unexpectedly and makes them easy to clean. Just a tip from an old housewife.

  • @NaturallyGourgeous
    @NaturallyGourgeous Год назад +1

Little tip from a bipolar sufferer, stack the dishes by category first also get a dish bin i got mine at dollar general for not too much, its a large square bucket for small stuff that is in the sink you can even use two since you have surface on top of the washer and dryer corral the cups and mugs in one and cutlery in the other, stack plates leave pots on the stove stacked to the best of your ability. then it becomes easier cause all you gotta do is pick a stack to start working on. usually I put cutting boards under, baking sheets all on the bottom them plates or anything flat. You get my jist, great video you're pumping me up with your positivity to deal with my own mayhem tomorrow. By the way I want to commend you for having the courage to show the ugly side of mental disorders I would not have the cojones to film my house in that state I am already mortified enough when people come over and I find myself profusely apologizing to whoever came to visit, don

I related so much to this video. The tips I've used that help me: 1. Only keep as many dishes as you absolutely need for the # of people in your home: My daughter and I live together, we don't entertain, no one is ever at our house, it is only the two of us. So why did I have 4 sets of silverware, 9 spatulas, 4 settings of dinnerware, etc? We literally donated all of the excess that was unnecessary and kept only 2 of everything. If you don't have it, it can't clutter-up your space. It may still not get washed, depression is real, but it isn't getting washed now, is it? A little bit of dishes is easier to wash than a lot. And life hack, this works in every area of your home, we have been donating everything we never use and our house feels much lighter. 2. My daughter hates using normal flatware and hated that it was always dirty (she has even more mental health issues than I unfortunately). Plastic flatware is cheap. We keep an ample supply of plastic forks and spoons, doesn't dirty anything because you're trashing them after. Some people think it's wasteful, fair point, but sometimes when dealing with mental health, you have to cut corners to survive. And 3. The thing that saves me with washing dishes because it is the chore I hate most: Any dish that I have left too long and will require scrubbing, add a drop of dishsoap and fill with hot water, let it sit while you do your other dishes-it honestly only takes a couple of minutes for most grime to loosen. No scrubbing required. I went from spending 2-3 hours doing dishes, to rarely spending over 20 minutes, mostly due to the last tip. Thank you for the honesty of this video. I've dealt with depression and anxiety most of my life and this hits home.

Also, please use a disinfectant when leaving food on dishes because bacteria will not die with only soap and water. To tell you the thruth, I use a little bit clorox to sanitize my dishes if I let it get to that point.

My biggest problem is, when I go to clean, I go into major panic attacks- the ones where you think you should call 911 because it might be a heart attack. What you do is spray on top of the stain let it sit for like a minute or so the. Wipe it off with a wet rag! Works every time. I use bleach for very stubborn stains. Be careful what material you use it on. Not all materials can tolerate it. Also handy for cleaning old black pots.
Baking soda, vinegar, lemon and soda crystals also help a lot.
Your dish washing technique is very similar to mine. If I'm too tired I just sort my dishes that helps me to do it later. I sort from right to left (depends on your kitchen I guess). I put the glasses first, then plates, cutlery and pots.
Sometimes I add a little water to everything (especially in coffee cups). That helps when you have the time to wash dishes, it goes much faster.
My trick to wash cutlery easy (I hate this too) is to put it in a dirty pot that I put on the stove with water and some detergent.
Your drying rack is very inspiring! I want that too! :)
