I love it when they give Kirran and Grant the ability to do whatever they want for stuff like this
0:38, we get our first dose of weirdness, with the mention that both Grant and Kirran want to go outside, but can't. At 0:50, it's revealed that they live in a shelter of some kind.
At 1:04, it's revealed that this is the 21st new year's video, meaning they've been in this shelter since 2001. This tracks with the general production quality and level of technology shown throughout the video.
At 1:20, we get reference to Uncle Barn's Used Car Palace, where used cars in apparently poor condition are sold. This is the only indication in the video that people are, in theory at least, allowed to leave the shelter; Grant and Kirran have already said they can't. The motto "A new car for your new life" indicates that the people who need the cars are also people who have undergone a drastic life change. My theory is that this ad is for the benefit of people who are forced to leave the shelter. The palace is "right off the 29," probably the I-29 interstate that runs from Kansas City to the Canadian border, and which also runs through Sioux Falls, the largest city in South Dakota. This is the first of several references to South Dakota.
At 1:40, we're introduced to Billerson, an enigmatic figure reminiscent of a cult leader, who has been in cryo-sleep since the shelter was established, and will continue to be in cryo-sleep until 2050, when he will have a messianic return.
At 2:05, we see a music video by Special Musical Guest, who Kirran doesn't seem to realize is the band's actual name. The song is upbeat but the lyrics and video are depressing, telling the listener that their time is wasted and their life is meaningless. The video itself depicts a group of musical aliens that appear ready to impact the Earth and destroy it, which prompts the US President to launch a nuclear missile at it. The aliens turn out to be friendly, but the missile wipes them and their audience out anyway.
At 3:56, we are treated to the New Year's Feast. The viewer is instructed to open a pre-distributed box. Inside is an artificial cranberry-flavored protein shake, for which there is only one serving available for the entire year.
At 4:44, we see what is in my opinion the weirdest part of the video. Kirran and Grant look back on the people who were lost the prior year, but something is off. First, the people are referred to as "Tower faithful," and the prayer they are given is "Peace under the Tower, may it guide you home." This reinforces the cult vibe that is present throughout the video. The list printed out is extraordinarily long, and seems to alarm Grant and Kirran. Oddly, they never actually say the people died, rather they are "lost" or "going home," and the Bbot for some reason switches to future tense. This suggests that at least some of the people listed are exiled instead of killed, and the exiles are the ones who need used cars from Uncle Barn.
At 6:12, Grant and Kirran talk about the events of the prior year, but they don't know what these events are; instead, Bbot has to tell them. Grant references happy, positive events, but the events given are disasters, which explains why the list of fallen in the previous segment was so long. Kirran, shocked, simply says "Bbot's never wrong." Given that Bbot spoke in future tense, it makes me think that this video was recorded long before 2021, and that Bbot is predicting future events, rather than relaying past ones. Note that the events listed reference shelters in Rapid City, Mitchell, and Watertown, which are all names of cities located in South Dakota.
At 6:46, we see an advertisement for an animated feature film, Cosmoknight, whose director was mentioned to have been lost that year. Cosmoknight seems to have a 1980s anime aesthetic. In order to purchase the film on VHS, one needs to pay 500 "Tower Tokens," which can be earned by "two weeks on The Wheel." It is implied that The Wheel is an exercise bike-like machine, which probably generates electricity for the shelter. Given that two weeks on The Wheel is claimed to be a small price to pay, it implies that people generally need to spend a great deal of time pedaling to keep the lights on. Given the disasters in the other shelters, it seems that this shelter is in poor shape and probably doesn't have a functioning power plant.
7:20, Kirran says "2022 means it's gonna be a new two thousand and twenty YOU!" Grant says he makes that joke every year, which doesn't make sense as that phrase doesn't rhyme in most years. The viewer is then treated to a brand-new uniform, a hazmat-type full-body plastic garment, which is set to replace the old uniform that has been in use for 4 years and is extremely flammable. At the end of the segment, we hear the now-standard greeting "Peace under the Tower, may it guide you home."
8:04 Grant and Kirran are singing a New Year's song, but instead of Auld Lang Syne, we instead hear a reworded version of the Happy Birthday Song. Again, their audience is referred to as "Tower faithful." They segue into the cooking segment, which the viewer fast-forwards through. While fast-forwarding, Grant and Kirran apparently get into a heated argument and briefly come to blows. Throughout the segment, the two are not actually cooking food; rather they are simulating cooking it in front of a green screen. However, something has gone wrong in production as the food has not been added to the video.
9:12 we see another advertisement, this time for BBTV entertainment tapes. Here we are treated to Grant's wonderful singing voice, as he sings songs that are wrong. He sings a birthday song to the tune of "Frere Jacques," a Christmas song to the tune of "Happy Birthday," a groundhog day song to the tune of "O Tannenbaum"
10:55 Grant and Kirran play video games on a "state of the art" PC, i.e, low-quality games on a DOS machine. In the first game, the viewer is challenged to find the "different"" fish; while most of the fish are blue, occasionally a red one swims by. The two ignore the red fish, however, and instead spot a green fish. They then play Tic-Tac-Toe, marveling at the multiplayer nature of the game, but they beg the viewer not to use more than two controllers at once. This comment is never explained.
12:38 the New year's countdown, which is set to ominous music and becomes increasingly aggressive as they approach zero, before abruptly turning festive again.
13:10 we finally see Billerson speak to the "kids" watching the video. The things he has to say are not very kid-friendly, however. He introduces his invention, VHS 2.0, which is clearly two VHS tapes glued together. After the credits roll, we see the viewer Stephan, in his uniform, who looks like he is about to cry.
We leave the video with more questions than answers. What does BBT actually stand for? Did the apocalypse really happen, or is the viewer being held captive? Is Billerson actually in cryo-sleep? Was there any significance to the aliens in the music video? Why shouldn't you use two controllers at once? What did Grant and Kirran fight over in the cooking segment?

Do you think that Stephan fast forwarded through the cooking segment because he *can't* cook anything? Either because he has no food to cook, no appliances to cook with, or potentially doesn't want to power his appliances with the wheel?

Special Musical Guest seems to be in there with them considering the style of music too lol. I mean just look at Fall Out Boy these days, Immortals is considerably different from their stuff from the 2000s. Panic! At the Disco also changed their style (you might have heard their song High Hopes in the dumpster fire that was RUclips Rewind 2018) My Chemical Romance broke up and while they had a reunion tour, they don't seem to be doing anything new. Blue October seems to be the same though.
Also during the BBTV song commercial, there are some awfully dark song titles about not having sun, "the sins of the old world," reinforcing Billson's patronage, etc

Whoa. That was fun. Kinda reminds me of bizarre stuff youd see by leaving Adult Swim on Tv late at night.
I love when Kirran and Grant are able to do their own thing for these skits. The awkward-style humor is fucking on point. This video in particular has that late-90s/early-2000s style format almost perfectly, except actually funny.
Though I do wish there was a chance for them to include a last minute scene with the deaths part. Ending that scene w/ "wait, Betty White WHAT THE FU-" and cut to the next bit.
This is exactly the energy modern life leaves us into the new year. Cathartic in a way, being able to comedically critique life through a semi fantasy perspective
