  • We took a trip to bishop Auckland after reading about in 2022 there were 34 retail outfits closed down and I wondered if it was getting worse with all the problems the high streets are having.. and it is and with a high crime rate I thought I was in for a disappointing visit. But to my surprise I actually loved it and was loving my visit. Join me and Keano today and you may want to visit yourself! I work for a company called cooplands and it’s a very good quality bakers you should pop in one day and try the products you will always come back for more ✅👍 #explore #property #foodblogger #weatherspoons #abandoned #buildings #abandonedbuildings #castles #abandonedbuildings

I went to Bishop Auckland Grammer and can't believe this is the same town that used to be so bustling a vibrant. Moved to Australia in 1970 and now live in New Zealand but travelled back regularly until my mother passed away in 1997. She would have been devastated to see it like this.

Thank you for checking out our legal graffiti walls. My apologies for the last comment i didn't catch our part when I skimmed the video. We painted the big Stan mural as a gift for the town, trying to make the old buildings look less hideous 😅

Born in Ferryhill in 1950, but lived in Bishop Auckland until 1975.
The vlog was poignant, but sad for me to see the town so bad.
I could tell you everything about how the town was back in the day.
Stan Laurel's surname was Jefferson until he changed it.

It’s going the same way as most towns now they build big shopping centre’s on the outskirts and everyone uses those went to bishop this weekend and found it to be a lovely clean place and the people were very friendly and helpful a pleasant surprise on what I was expecting will be traveling back soon! Ps the walks around the river and dear park are fantastic.

You know the Stan Laurel statue Terry? There's a roubdabout just behind it where you can either go right for the bus station and left for the train station but if you go straight over it onto Princes Street and that was where he lived and was christened at the church over the road (St Peters i think)

the shop at 14.30 was a boots chemist, some bigger shops went out of town, including argos, to tindale crescent 2 miles away from where you are now. i was born near to where the stanley statue is and if you had gone up princes street youll have found a blue plaque on a house where he lived when he was younger.

I usually come to bishop to go to specsavers once a year today i walked from tenters st along rear of morrisons to halfords i walked down newgate to market place i was shocked at the boarded up shops some dubious looking males in doorways must admit it was scary i am 72 yr old male i feel the street should be flattened make it a park grass trees seats a tram line up to the retail end for the shoppers this street is a disgrace

Great vlog.Shame the way the Newgate St has gone in recent years. Some time ago I remember it packed with people and the market was busy, near to the town hall.Great drinking place with the pubs down to the market place.Where there was a couple of nightclubs!Unfortunately alot of large retail shops including the football club moved upto retail park up the road towards West Auckland.Beales occupied what was originally a big Coop. I think Mctintyres is supposed to becoming a Stack, similar to Seaburn? As they say there is regeneration, particularly around the park and the market place.Talk of converted some of empty shops into flats.Redoing the bus station and maybe a new park behind Newgate St.

Bishop was a great place in the 80s/90/00s. Had loads of shops, banks, bakers with an amazing market back then and great pubs. Then shortly afterwards Council introduced parking fees that didn't help and like most places everything went downhill when internet shopping was in full swing, lockdowns finished the rest off. Now they like to waste money on rebuilding "market place" (if you can call it that, lol) & bus station. Would make more sense to build a bus station at St Helens, that's where everything is happening now. That shopping centre was the birth of our supermarket, I remember it being "Fine Fare". Has changed many times since then and now nothing, quite sad when you see how things have changed. That place with squatters was always a bakers, was once a Bakers oven, then went to Greggs. Yea, shame really watching the slow decay of our towns, wonder where it will all end.

shame about all the shops now, but go cycling down the railway lines and sometimes nip into the grounds of the castle...they sometimes have free events on there and you can go inside for free...they do a nice food festival there too in april(?)...
and before xmas we went to the xmas market with friends, rented an airbnb flat and got real drunk... the plum porter been in wetherspoons was decent @ 1.99 apint..

Typical Mackem can barely read 🤣 That sign said Stan Laurel moved to Bishop at 14 months not years. In the market square where you were on about it being a good place for pubs, back in the late 90's early 2000's it was packed every weekend, people used to come from miles around just for the nightlife. Most pubs shut at 11pm but the Queens and the Postchaise were open until 2 or 3am so everyone used to work their way down the street and finish off the night there, they used to be filled wall to wall and you could barely move in the square at kicking out time. Biggest miss for me is the Tut and Shive pub, used to be in there all the time. The Green Tree is still open and is a really nice pub.
As for the shops, it also used to be busy and had loads of market stalls in the square on Thursday and Saturday. The big Victorian building you weren't sure of used to be the Co-op department store, it had a little cafe and loads of shop space. The big one near the bank where you put your phone on the window used to be Boots but they moved up to the retail park. I've lived in and around Bishop most of my life and it's sad to see it now, used to be a lovely place.
