    I sailed on El Faro for a year. I sailed with all them except the polish riders. Captain Davidson only thought of his future with the company and didn’t think about anyone safety. The company is just as much to blame also for negligence of the crew. That ship should have been out of service 10 years before it sank. The worst shape ship I’ve ever sailed on. A total nightmare of a ship. I feel so bad for the families and think about how close I would of been there as well. R.I.P. 32 the captain I have no remorse for

      the ship was too small to sail on the atlantic it should have sail on the great lakes better than its suicidal missions on the deadly atlantic ocean with its impredictible storms

      @@TheAbderaman Size has little to do with it. Most lakebound freighters are actually bigger than oceangoing freighters. The largest lakers measure over 1000 ft long. Buoyancy and freeboard are more important than length when it comes to riding out storms.

    For reference, Titanic rests in 12,500 feet of water. The El Faro rests much deeper at 15,000 feet.

      Those poor sailors suffered a horrifying death. In a Category 3-4 hurricane, the swells can be of nearly mythical proportions. www.nrl.navy.mil/media/news-releases/2005/nrl-measures-record-wave-during-hurricane-ivan
      This link documents wave height in a storm of similar intensity. Waves were as high as 40m (130ft) and 20 -30m waves were practically everywhere in this storm. No one could've survived this monstrosity.

    The final investigative results will be thorough. An earlier example cargo vessel sinking quickly with the loss of all aboard, was the MV Derbyshire which sank in a typhoon on 09/09/1980. No Mayday was received and there was no black box. The wreck did get surveyed but after some delay. A RUclips video (The sinking of MV Derbyshire) shows the results of that inquiry.

    I realize part of it is the ROV the camera is on, moving about the water. But, I am surprised at how much movement there is that far down. I believe that was the rudder, swinging back and forth, but also appeared to be moving up and down. How tragic, such a sad loss of life.

    This wreck has more in common with the cargo ship Edmund Fitzgerald than the Titanic. Both were cargo ships had some difficulties in a storm. Both sank with no mayday call almost on the same day 40 years apart, both wrecks found with deep sea CURV units, both wrecks are heavily damaged with nothing conclusive about what have caused these modern ships to lose buoyancy so quickly. Only difference is Gordon Lightfoot wrote a hit rock song ballad about the Fitzgerald sinking.

      I know this comment is 5 years old but the Fitz sank before the crew could even react like 90 seconds or less and it was gone the EL Faro reported flooding about 2 hours before going down, from about 4:45 am to the sinking the EL Faro crew was fighting to keep the ship afloat when they lost engines they knew they were dead they probably didn't say it aloud to try and stay calm but I think everyone of them knew they were doomed and probably were wishing they just ignored the captain and sailed to safer waters but it didn't matter at that point.

  • @sanseverything900
    @sanseverything900 Год назад +6

    What's sad is that at least one of the crew were able to put on immersion suits and were most likely just floating in the hurricane-churned seas for hours, if not days, hoping against hope to get rescued. In a way I'm kind of hoping the turbulent waters drowned them early to put them out of their misery.

    • @user-ct8my8rv9c

      In a hurricane like that, the incredibly high winds are picking up so much water off the surface that it's nearly impossible to breath with your head at the same level.

  • @neemel

    I wonder, did el faro bottom out on the stern? Looking at that damage it seem that's what caused the boiler to fail and holds to take on water.

  • @alekhidell2980

    The Mate, 2nd and 3rd officers should have relieved Davidson of his command, and steered a safer course. It was their inaction, too, that doomed them.

    • @jessicam5712
      @jessicam5712 3 месяца назад +1

      It's not their fault. Mutiny is still a thing, if they were to relieve the captain of his command they would have all been fired, lost their licenses and they'd never be allowed to sail again, to say nothing of possible legal consequences which I believe is five years in jail.

  • @Matt-mo8sl
    @Matt-mo8sl Год назад +1

    Such a shame, Danielle Randolph coulda saved that ship while Davidson was asleep. She knew they were headed directly into the storm but did not act. People tell me it's because she was a good sailor and she understood the chain of command and would not be a mutineer. An old rusted out open hull vessel like that? That whole situation was depressing as it didn't have to happen.

    I feel like this is quite similar to the Edmund Fitzgerald, men dying for time margins, profit and pride. But idk how much weather report accuracy has improved since then. Either way this captain was an idiot. He at least redeemed himself going out as a man, not refusing to leave the trapped man behind.
    The el faro went down fast once water came in. I think he knew they were screwed at some point.

    I don't think enclosed lifeboats would have even saved the crew, think for a moment how strong the winds were with 40 foot waves (really like 80 feet with the trough) everytime that little lifeboat would come to the top of wave it would probably be blown over by the winds and tumble down the wave into the trough I don't think their is anyway to survive a hurricane at sea just don't be in one is the best and only way to avoid this fate.

    • @dannyhanny1191
      @dannyhanny1191 6 лет назад +1

      Bodies seem to disappear down here in the warmer climates. Not sure if we have different ocean life that decays and eats them and decays the bones, but that's what it seems like. We have divers who go missing in south Florida, and no sign of them is ever found save for - possibly - their dive gear. Since most of us don't label our dive gear with metals tags indicating who the owner is, it's often impossible to know whose dive gear was found.

      At those pressures any body cavity is crushed, so your torso where your lungs and organs are would be crushed, skull would be crushed, unless theres some type of small air pocket or something where a body is any type of body would long have been pulverized before it would've touched down on the bottom

    It's sad that people blame the captain for the disaster, which I admit he was somewhat responsible for. But nobody ever mentions how he obeyed multiple captaining rules. I read the actual transcript from the ships VDR, and it shows that Davidson stayed with a panicked helmsman on the bridge and tried to help him, until the recording suddenly ends, meaning he stayed with his crew til the very end.

      El Faro isn't going back on the ocean. Most of the time we don't raise sunken ships and El Faro is in such a broken state (the entire bridge area was torn off the top of the supertructure) that it probably wouldn't be repairable.
