  • In today's video guitar lesson I will give you some ideas on how to mix the major and minor pentatonic. Mixing these scales together is the key for a lot of solo improvisation. Using the D,C and G chords in a southern rock groove in the style of the song Can't You See. We will really focus on the D note all over the fretboard and build solo ideas from there! Here is a link to the backing track I used at the end of the video. • Can't You See » Backin... .
    Video Lesson Contents

    1:41 D minor and D major pentatonic scales in- close break down
    2:56 How to target the root note D all over the fretboard
    4:42 In-close Blending the D major and D minor pentatonic scales together

    I have been watching Rusty’s guitar videos for awhile now. I’ve never interacted with them until right now by liking and commenting,sharing, that’s all he asks for?
    This guy is the BOB ROSS of guitar instruction!! Bob unknowingly influenced my life through the canvas on late night Public Broadcasting with his effortlessly positive disposition and excitement for the craft he had humbly mastered right before our eyes. I say unknowingly because I don’t think Bob ever really had a clue of the reach and power that his influence would yield for years to come. So,,while I’m still able to appreciate Rusty’s Guitar I want to let him know what an amazing gift that he is sharing with all of us. Above the humble and pessimistic attitude he takes with the whole concept and the down to earth and understandable instructions that everyone picking plucking strumming or shredding can relate to, it’s his genuine excitement and motivating demeanor that is infectious and inspiring. His quiet and calm way of communicating all this with his audience is what likens him to Bob so much for me. What an opportunity I would be wasting by not letting him know that I’m watching, learning, and growing from his contribution. Thank you Rusty. If there is a saint for the six string I’d expect you’ve earned that title. St.Rusty Six Strings. May all your compositions be in harmony, all your axes be in perfect tune, and all your necks be straight and true, Rock on!

    I just accidentally found this site. Finally someone has put the fretboard into perspective. Rusty is an exceptional guitar player and teacher. The light bulbs are flashing. Wow I just want to keep playing and learning. I have bought many courses but none have explained things systematically and simply as Rusty. I now understand why chords and scales work together. I never had a clue what I was doing and just started back at guitar after many years. Rustys approach makes you want to learn and practice. I never understood what a root note was nor its importance. How the major and minor scales go together and take playing to a higher level. I was in a rut just playing one scale. Practice was boring and going nowhere. I am now on a completely new road and its up to me to practice and not be afraid to try anything new. Thank you Rusty and keep the lessons coming. If you truely want to progress in guitar playing then check out Rustys channel and be prepared to work. Its not the guitar but the player and with these tools you cant help but excel in playing.

    Thank you very much Rusty. Very good advice to combine major and minor pentatonic. I start feeling confident with the minor pentatonic, but it will take me a while to develop the major pentatonic. Probably when I get home, I have to draw it first in a piece of paper and trying to make sense out of it. Cheers from Indonesia.

      Just take the D note in two different areas of the fretboard and build small phrases in those areas. Major and minor. At first don’t try to use the whole scale just do small sections of it. That’s how I learned early on. Try to target the D note! Greetings from the USA! Thanks buddy 👍

    Nice stuff as always great tutorial, mixing minor and major adds to the flavor indeed , I’m experimenting lately a lot with the mixolydian scale , looks a bit like the major pentatonic but not quite ... more possibilities to add to the toolbox ... might be something for you if you want to break out of the pentatonic scales ... anyway nice luck you played here , quite fun to listen to and I think it takes some practice to make these runs smooth .. got a new tune out too... Guilt in reverse ... I played the solo without thinking just go by feel .. don’t know the modes or scales ....

      Hey John, yes playing with Phil is what we all need to strive for. And yes we go to our tool bag of ideas to make that happen! Thanks for your words of wisdom! Actually as I mix these two scales together the mixolydian mode comes out in small pieces! Talk to you soon buddy👍

    What you refer to as the blue note in the major pentatonic context is actually the minor 3rd or am I missing something?
    Great lesson once more Rusty!
    Cheers,
    Martin

    • @rustysguitar1
      @rustysguitar1  2 года назад +2

      Yes it is definitely the minor third of D major. What that chord progression is in the key of G major. So you can look at that interval in a lot of different ways. I probably should not have said blue note but I still look at it that way because if I’m using that scale in a B minor context it is definitely a blue note. I just know it sounds good and I use that little chromatic note in major or minor and don’t really think about the interval. Thanks for the comment Martin I hope you enjoy your week ahead👍

    • @LMGuitarCorner
      @LMGuitarCorner 2 года назад +1

      @@rustysguitar1 Thanks for clearing that up. As I'm looking at it always from the context of the key of D I was a little confused at first. I probably even went too deep into theory early on when learning about improv and now I probably think about that stuff too much. Thanks Rusty, I will, I hope you do too!
      Cheers,
      Martin

    • @rustysguitar1
      @rustysguitar1  2 года назад +1

      That was a great question because there’s so many different ways to look at that note. Just me saying blue note could be confusing to some people for sure. I just know that it sounds bluesy and I use it all the time major or minor and really don’t even think about what interval it is. Thanks again Martin and I will talk to you soon👍
