- This video contains very detail instructions (step-by-step) on what you need to do to FIND, DOWNLOAD, BUILD, INSTALL and PLAY the Mr Burns 800-in-1 Classic VERTICAL Arcade Games Image - which contains over 800 Classic ARCADE Games based on the VERTICAL Monitor.
This Image is great to place in an Arcade Cabinet OR Arcade1UP Cabinet that is based on a Vertical Monitor...such as Pac-Man, Galaga, Centipede, Space Invaders.
The video shows and explains the detailed and tedious tasks that are glossed over when people say - “Go get the MR BURNS image onto a microSD card”?
This video deals with the most common question asked by those who are new to Retro Gaming - “Where do you get all of the GAME ROMs?”
The video shows you where to obtain the hardware you need to complete this task...specifically the Raspberry Pi 3B+ computer. The video also shows where to obtain the numerous software packages that you need to complete this task...and how to obtain the 2,400 GAME ROMs that you need to complete this task.
The length of the video is due to the attention focused on the DETAILS to SHOW you how to complete a Task…and...also to EXPLAIN what is going on (and why) when you perform the different Tasks.
If you want to get into Retro Gaming…then IMAGES are a great way to begin…and the MR BURNS Image with the Raspberry Pi 3B+ is one of the best items out there to start your journey…bringing back the NOSTALGIA of hanging out in the Arcades during the 80s!

Great job! Can’t believe you don’t have more subscribers, You are the only one that was able to help me install the games out of all the website. You got yourself a subscriber for life. Keep up the good work.
Jose C - Glad I was able to help you (that is my goal for these videos). More RETROPIE videos are in production and will be released throughout the Spring...as I prepare to put them in my Arcade1UP Cabinets.
Wow thank you so much man!! This image is the bomb! I used it to my arcade 1 up countercade!
One thing i do to shut this image down easier, I used tab to pull up controls and assigned P2 start to Displays Menu. This gives you the option to go back to the games or go to a safe shut down screen and then one button press from there to confirm. I still use this image a ton, with trackball and spinner and a 4-8 way MagStick. 🤘🏻
Hi. Can you tell me, how does the mag stick in 4-way mode play games like Pacman? Some people say it's fine. Other people say it's not as good as a dedicated 4-way stick for directional change in things like Pacman. What do u think?
@@frankmacs9379 I personally enjoy it and how easy it is to go back and forth. There is some upwards throw built into the stick in order to allow for the switching mechanism. As well, which I am about to do this weekend, the switches are not so great. I am going to get four from MicroCenter this weekend to make it a little more sensitive. So this all in mind, I think there are good sides and bad. But overall, for my machine that has that and a spinner and a trackball...it is great. I am no stickler for arcade perfect performance out of a single machine. My good friend has a hard time getting used the the fact that the stick can pull upwards some during play. But very much loves the cab I made for him with it.
@@DoubleDguitar Thank you for great reply. Yeah, i think then with everything I've heard, I'm gonna stick with the stock Partycade stick. The precision with Pacman is important to me, so maybe I'll get an extra Partycade in a few months, mod it & put in an 8-way in that one. Thank you again for info; it's much appreciated 👍
@@frankmacs9379 you got it. That all said, I score higher on my A1up PacMan than I do on the modded cab with the MagStick. A true 4 way is really the way to go with those games.
@@DoubleDguitar Yeah i think so, mate. Cheers 👍👍👍
Glad you enjoyed the 800-in1 image. If you're interested there is now a Mr Burns 900-in-1 vertical image for Raspberry Pi 4 and it is bursting with new features! See here for video and link: ruclips.net/video/EMlrR8D6ufg/видео.html
Sir I know some images can be used on 3B or 3B+ but will this work on the 3B? And if not do u have a vertical image thatyll work on the 3B? Thanks in advance
@iAMMiKe3D Hi. Yes the new 900-in-1 version has images for Pi 1, Zero, Zero 2, 2, 3, 3+ and 4. All links in the video I linked above.
Excellent tutorial!!!
James B - Thanks!
Excellent tutorial! Thank you!
Great Teacher!
Not all games are vertical on it. I used it for my Arcade1Up Countercade, and some are horizontal. I would like to know if there is a way to bulk change them to vertical? Tron is an example.
Thanks uncle scott...
Very helpful thank you.
Is it worth updating anything in this image such as retropie or will it cause issues as it's still my favourite for my small vertical bartop.
I’ve not updated anything on it.
@@scottfarrar3441
I only ask as its quite an old version of retropie and didn't know if there's any benefits by updating.
Thanks so much!
Great video, very helpful. Do you know if it's possible to reduce the 800-in-1 down to less games? I've done some research and there are only 117 games in this image that are 4-way joystick games. Since that's the configuration I have for my Sanwa joystick I'd like to only have those games in my cabinet. Thanks!
Yes. You can do FAVORITES to minimize the Game numbers. You can modify the ROM folder (and supporting folders). You'll have to research the Front End software (ATTRACT MODE) to do that work...I was going to do a video on that topic but never got around to it - perhaps this Winter.
@@scottfarrar3441 thanks for the reply!
Great video ! This is exactly what I needed. I’m just using the 101 button masher vertical image from Arcade Punks . I plan to put this in an arcade 1up machine. Where did you get that power off cord for the pi ?
FrankieM -the cord with the ON/OFF switch came with the Pi Kit I purchased from CanaKits. I think u can also order it separately if u need one for a previously purchased Pi.
I'm really stoked to get started on one of these to put in an Arcade1up...is this still the best hardware to use Scott? Or do you recommend the Pi4 now?
Pi4 uses a different image. Pi3/Pi3+ has enough power to run all the games on this image. Pi4 provides power to run games on emulators for Sega Dreamcast and Sony PS1 and some Xbox games...but you'll need to find images with those games (or the actual game "roms" and build your own image.
@@scottfarrar3441 Cool, thank you, I"m not interested in those games, just the oldies, I'll stick with your plans, thanks so much.
Excellent image. I was able fill the screen in pacman. how can I add scanlines? I have a hardware device on order regardless if can't be done
I’m not sure 🤔 on how to add Scan Lines.
Scott, the one item you speak of but isnt listed is your wireless keyboard you use in the set up, could you please share a link so I can chase one down before ordering my Pi?
I've added 3 Wireless Keyboard options (AmazonPrime) in the Description. The first is just the Keyboard ($18)...the second is a Keyboard + Mouse ($25)...and the 3rd is a mini-Keyboard ($22) that I use with many of my computer based game systems where I need to key in very little info. You can find "cheaper" wireless Keyboards but I prefer the Microsoft brand for a few $$ more. You can find more expensive wireless Keyboards too...even from Microsoft!
@@scottfarrar3441 outstanding, Scott, thank you, this is the first project, and my son and I thank you for your info and help, its fantastic.
Excellent tutorial. I would like to know how to correct the sound of the games toaplan and arcade namco classic collection in this image by mr. Burns?
Very helpful is there a way so only 4 way joystick games are shown in attractmode ?
Is it possible to quickly change all the games which use advmame to another core that uses libretro. If so how and what one would you recommend? Thanks again 👍
It seems on this build that space invaders is called something like Alien Invaders???
Also, can you limit/configure it to only show games you want?
Thanks
Does anyone know where I can find a list of games in this build?
great job!
Also i wanted to ask is there a shut down script? Like a digital power button how some builds have or do u have to hit start and shut down within emulation station?
No ON/ OFF script in the image. I manually shut it down.
great vid bud..quick question...can we configure for horizontal cabs? cheers
muskymcg - No (unless u spend a lot of time & effort to do so) as this image is for Vertical cabs/monitors.
I have a similar video on my channel for Horizontal cabs/monitors - it is called “Wolfanoz” and contains most of the Vertical games on the “Mr Burns” image.
@@scottfarrar3441 cheers bud, you're a star... Been leaving these jobs for s rainy day... Have time now to have a mess around;)
Hi everybody! Can anyone here help me? This link has no more downloads (MR BURNS 8GB Image - 800-in-1 Vertical Classisics RetroPie Image ). I once have downloaded this image, but lost it somehow. Can anyon here send it to me? Many thanks in advance!
How and where can I purchase this for my A1up
I am very interested can someone please direct me on how to purchase this one please
Did somebody manage to convert this image for Odroid XU4 or kow the way to do it? I add all the roms from thios image to Lakk and Batocera but it is a mess.
Hi Scott great video....any idea if this image works on Pi 4?
Will this be the correct ratio for a 4:3 monitor or a 16:9?
I just got this running on a arcade 1up counter cade. I tried playing spy hunter wont see my joysticks to configure for game
I'm having trouble going into attract mode, it brings up a command prompt on reboot every time. I'm having a tough time without a keyboard and have had to wipe, reformat, and reinstall several times to get out of it. I've just been dealing with the sideways menu on emulation station and playing the games correctly with the screen rotated 180 degrees. Any recommendations?
How many inches is that lcd tv/monitor? Looks perfect for a vertical cab
Are there any different procedures for the Raspberry pi4? Thanks
As of Spring 2020, RetroPie is not officially released for the Raspberry Pi 4. If you are using that combination then you are in unchartered territory.
any new version of this in 2024? Arcadepunks image is long gone
If you Google Search “Wolfanoz” it will probably lead u to a site that has Images (*.IMG) files which can be downloaded. These sites with IMG files show up & disappear all the time. Wolfanoz is a creator of IMGs that creates good content.
Hey roms are already included with this build right
Van you run this image on a pi 4?
No - image is for Pi 3 / 3B / 3B+
Just installed this in my Arcade1up mod cab and it’s upside down for some reason any suggestions to fix this?
There is a setting to “flip” the screen 180 degrees - I just don’t remember the details. Google for that setting OR post on A1UP Mod FB Group and someone will provide the answer.
I really don’t get the control configuration at all
Great video. I have a question. I want to put this image in my cenetipede arcade1up cab. Beside a trackball, spinner and, player 1&2 buttons, how many buttons are needed to play all the games in the Mr. Burns image?
I haven’t played ALL of the games on that image so I can’t be definitive. Most Classic Arcade games use 1-3 Buttons. Fighter games use 2-6 Buttons. I would write down the games you want to play and then search www.klov.com for each game & it will tell u the number of buttons that game used. At that point I can make your decision. Initially, would recommend 3, 4 or 6 buttons.
@@scottfarrar3441 cool. Thanks for the info.
@@scottfarrar3441 I didn't know there were fighting games in the Mr. Burns image.
@@1972lesteryan - I'm not specifically saying there is...I'm just saying that the number of Buttons for Fighting Games is traditionally between 2 to 6 buttons. I don't remember all of the 800 games on that image.
@@scottfarrar3441 oh my bad. I misunderstood
I'm really struggling with flipping the screen 180 degrees. I have a keyboard and the tab key does nothing. Is there any other way to get out of attract mode and into the code?
TAB Key should take you into the CONFIGURE Menu for Attract Mode. ESC Key is the "back" key...it will take you to the "Exit Attract-Mode?" prompt. Those are the stock mappings of the Image. If they are not working for you then make sure you Keyboard is properly working. If you plug a Controller into the Pi then you will be prompted to configure the Controller Buttons.
Image is not correct aspect ratio should fill the screen when rotated. Can you show how to change size to fill screen?
Go into retroarch and change it from there.
Can this be used for coin op?
Tell me is this just for the 3B or 3B+ and can it be used on either or!? Please let me know id like to download and install this
I have it installed on 3B+.
@@scottfarrar3441ok just askin if it would work on a regular 3B thanks
@@MiKeFish2012 - i’m sure it will work on a 3B as thats enough power to play most classic arcade games.
@@scottfarrar3441 thanks for the answer it's like the internet you ask a question and then people just go around it that's exactly what I was asking thank you lol 😂
Is there a way to shut this down without having to use a keyboard?
On my pi 4 I can download the image from torrent to my CPU after that I'm lost when I try to use the win disk imager I can't find the file. So when I try to extract it like you did I can't find it any suggestions??
Antonio Wilson look in your downloads folder. You need a program like winzip or winrar to extract the file.
Nice tutorial....will this image run on a pi zero w?
plane spotter - no
How do you enter the sudo nano inputs? Just type it in? I can't get it to work
ruclips.net/video/VbusdrCEDIA/видео.html
Awesome thank you, couldn't you rewrite the config.txt on notepad++ as well?
Can this be used in a cocktail table? Or do you know of a image that can be?
I use it for my cocktail table setup. In games like pac-man, you need to go to mame settings (tab with keyboard while in-game) and change from upright to cocktail, and it'll flip the screen for 2nd player.
@@baqslash Do you know if pi3 can do mirroring ? then horizontal games could be played as well. pi4 really has a nice one using mirroring not sure if it can be done on a pi3. its going in a cocktail wooden barrel and debating which would be the best way to go. thanks
Great tutorial, thanks much. I am having controller issues with my Mr Burns Vertical Image. Tried replacing everything: SD card, image, power supply, etc., even the Pi 3B itself. No matter what I do the system thinks that controller buttons are being pressed when they're not (phantom or ghost inputs). So it must be in the software?
I have the same issue with button masher 101. It's driving me crazy trying to figure it out.
Is it possible to replace the boot video?
Yes. I forget the details BUT the “call” is in a Config file.
@@scottfarrar3441 I just imaged my card last night. I was struggling because I thought if I used a 32gb card, I could put the image in and then potentially expand the partition. I finally gave up late last night. Didn’t boot yet.
Is there a game list for this
Not that I’m aware of…but u might find one if u do a Google Search.
@@scottfarrar3441 I have looked, I cant find one
Basically wondering if it plays all the atari paddle games like warlords, breakout, demons and diamonds, etc....
Can i just buy one from you?
will this work for the pi4?
No
will this work with hdmi or just vga
Jaime Ramirez - Raspberry Pi have HDMI output.
Mega is lame. I have downloaded two time and for the life of me cannot find the file. Wnere does Mega write the dman Zip?
Nathan Marshall - did u check your DOWNLOADS folder?
@@scottfarrar3441 Umm yes, it sucks, use torrent or something. this is lame.
It is not correct to call them Raspberry Pi images as they can be run on Linux X86 machines also
