Bireli covers jaco than no one. He played with him one year ( i think) and because is his like a sponge he can ( because of his vituosity) reproduce the main licks of jaco. On the improvisation side he his from another planet. Most of the bass players can learn a lot him. Absolutely fantastic...
The quality of this awesome performance is a testament to how high Jaco set the bar. All he is doing is quoting Jaco in as many ways as he can think of and he never runs out of material...
I saw him live in early '85 - a gypsy jazz style guitar concert. During the interval, as I walked down a corridor in the theatre I glanced into an open doored room to see none other than Birelli staring back at me clutching an anonymous bass guitar on which he was performing technical marvels - as here, [unplugged]. That moment will stay with me forever.
Simply amazing, playing music for Bireli is like breathing! To be that articulate and melodic on a fretless bass, not even his main instrument. What can't he do? Really inspiring on so many levels!
Wow. That's one of the most amazing things I've ever seen. Bireli is a genius guitarist. So I'm watching this, having been attracted by Jaco's name, hearing his lines, sound, harmonics and groove, before slowly realizing that was Bireli playing that bass?? What will he do next? Maybe win the 100 meter dash in the Olympics? :-)
Seeing as this guy played with jaco, he obviously knows what he's doing. He learnt the tricks of the trade... but to say he's actually a guitar player (and a bloody good one at that) ...well, this is just fucking awesome. He gets the treble(y), punchy, snappy notes perfectly. Absolutely brilliant!!
This is a reflection of how deep his musical consciousness is that he can do Jaco playing like Jaco. To say he has woken up his musical mind is an understatement but that is what he has done. Once open he can take it anywhere he wants….to cool. His technique matches his musical mind and and he is an experiment in the universe.
we that love JACO..... ok it reminds jaco we know we can hear it is not JACO....THE SPIRIT IS NOT THERE even the tecnique does not equal match JACO,s ok he tried
He sounds more like Jaco than Jaco. At first I thought "that's a nice inlay fretless--I've never seen that one before. Then I realized "That's not Jaco!"
Ahah great!!! You right. In fact I'm pretty sure Jaco had a over active third eye, open for sure! Too much intuition, connection, and was a spiritual guy as well. Most of so called "mental disorders" are in fact person who have superior Chakras very active in a society based on lower Chakras. I started bass 20 years ago and have a kundalini awakening for 2 years now. All those geniuses in music are very active on all Chakras, but a lot of them are in dis balance. Crown is too closed, by their ego, third eye too active, maybe open. To be a very great musician you must be in the now and in the inside. Every millisecond you go out of your inner side or out of the now you will at least play very medium way, at worst totally destroy and out of groove/tune /tempo... This is real man, Chakras are real, they are first glands in the material body, but it s all real. And before my kundalini I was intuitive bug not very spiritual and unaware of thus, Chakras etc.. But this kind of music is, among lot of other things, what helps me to have a consciousness awakening. I was friend with Ingrid Pastoriys and she always told me jaco was connected Niw I understand. You re joke was funny but may have some kind of truth behind. Jaco, like Bob Marley, where very aware of esoteric stuff
@@JAK0449 I agree with you with opened chakras correlated to music greatness. I'm pretty sure Both Hendrix and Zappa too had wide opened chakras. It's impossible to compose so many masterpieces without being connected to descent level spiritual world. Also it is obvious that a super genius improviser like Hendrix who made extremly groovy and inspired solos, was really connected to the other side. In total contrast we have guitar heroes like Vai who are great technicians and good composers but whose the music don't feed my soul (energy) 1 tenth zappa, jaco or hendrix for instance do.
Freakin great, but as to what I see here, Rocco and Lenny Pickett from T.O.P. could equally hold their own pretty evenly, talent wise. Rocco is not quite there in some aspects, but Lenny is one sick sax player! I'd love to hear what drumming Dave G. could lay down in this piece!
Good but not in the same league as Jaco. Depth of sound, time feel, accuracy of execution, musical conception not on a par. Jaco had the ferocious intensity of the geniuses of the music such as Parker and Bud Powell, the compositional output also.
BAAAAAAAAANG.....
That's the sound of my jaw hitting the floor...
I knew Bireli loved Jaco but this is unbelievable..
No question , Brireli can play better than most top tier bassists...a freaking monster....
Bireli a tout digéré de Jaco. Le rythme, les ghost notes. C’est au dela du talent, c’est du pur génie. Merci bireli !
Unbelievable. He touches on several of Jaco's go-to riffs. How am I just discovering this today? Bireli is amazing.

He's not "a guy", he's The Guy. Since '90 never stop to be surprised & excited listen at him. He can play Jaco.

Remember Bireli toured with Jaco. Live in Italy is the cd. Super musicians.
30 years ago now , this CD gave me the love for the electric bass !!

Man Jaco be proud of that! What a hommage

This is officially an all time favorites video/performance now. What a fantastic tribute to Jaco from Bireli!!
Very brilliant with very high sounding quality, makes one's day totally mesmerized.
He was definitely paying attention when he played with Jaco!
Un vrai tuerie, j'adore je crois que je vais arrêter la basse après ca!!!!!! Quelle claque....Bravo et encore bravo...et un grand merci....
been a fan of bireli's guitar playing for a while, but man he is really showcasing the "spirit" of jaco's playing style here! nice!
Yeah.......this cat definitely knows Jaco.........I hear cats like these guys and I MISS JACO SO MUCH!
Belle hommage, merci pour cet instant magique. Bravissimo Bireli .

and for your information, Biréli is "not" a bass player...!!!!!
he's one of the greatest manouche/gipsy guitar player
Nevertheless, he picks up and plays an electric bass guitar at 3'30'' and on...
imagine if he played bass!!

Jaco got a better tone out of the bass. And he invented that style of playing. Still...hats off to this guy. No small feat to imitate Jaco that well.
As well as all the other glorious attributes he makes such a clear and ringing sound.
incroyable! TOUS les plans de pastorius passés à la moulinettte!
He sounds more like Jaco than Jaco. At first I thought "that's a nice inlay fretless--I've never seen that one before. Then I realized "That's not Jaco!"
FREEDOM JAZZ DANCE!?!?!?!
holy shit-best ending ever!
+mats sawatsky Yes, sounds awsome
Would have made Jaco proud indeed!
Awesome!... pure flatwounds color... beautiful!

THE GUY IS A GENIUSSSSSSSSSS
MY TWO FAV NO 3 AL DI MEOLA
BIRELLI PASTORIUS
TWO IN ONE NOWWWWWWWWWWWW
Would’ve been nice to see him team with zawinul at some point..
And Zappa.
This is just musical theatre, with Bireli starring in the lead role.
QUE ANIMAL!!!!!!!!!! IMPRESIONANTE!! TANKS
Jaco is the greatest but it's safe to say Bireli is a better bass player than Jaco was a guitar player.
Ah, it,s Bireli himself! Just twigged he`s a bass player too!! Awesome!
damn his killing it ,theyre good
I know that now , I am fairly new to his music; an incredible musician! no disrespect intended!
played with and took lessons from Jaco
Beautiful!!!
Bireli channeling Jaco through third eye chakra

Far out !
Almost like jaco but, better:)
steu claque!!! bordel de claque !!!
¡¡BIRELI GENIO!!
Who si the sax player?
BRAVO......!!!!!!!
Ouah!
he plays as jaco wooow
Free Jazz is hard to enjoy
Freakin great, but as to what I see here, Rocco and Lenny Pickett from T.O.P. could equally hold their own pretty evenly, talent wise. Rocco is not quite there in some aspects, but Lenny is one sick sax player! I'd love to hear what drumming Dave G. could lay down in this piece!

BRAVISIMO!!!!!!!!
not human
3:32 Hey for god's sake keep playing there!!!
So good so far !...
No, the bass of doom is owned by Robert Trujillo (metallica). Any other is a replica.
Freedom jazz dance (Eddie Harris).
It doesn't sound like Jaco to me but it sounds pretty damn coo
wow......
that sax kinda kills the vibe
Pardon my ignorance, but does anybody know who this amazing bass player is??
Gerry Dillon it is birelli lagrene à french manouche guitar player
Bireli a bcp aidé Jaco afin de redevenir Jaco
Bireli est comme un imitateur genre Laurent Gerra mais en...
PASTORIUS ?!?!?
Is Bireli playing flatwounds here?
Probably not
How is this song called? (theme at the end)
It's Eddie Harris' "Freedom Jazz Dance."
@@Oroonie 8 years ago 😂👌
@@Musikermomo Sorry for the delayed response (only 8 years)...
:( Jaco
Bireli's from another world.... Awesome! But who are the arseholes who disliked this? Pop music fans perhaps!
im about to be late for work...
So? late or not?
a bit.. TOO jaco. I love it, but i'm having trouble hearing this and not hearing blatant jaco licks
That was the point! It's a tribute haha
@guitarreilly
IS THIS THE BASS OF DOOM WITH A DIFFERENT NECK?
nope its a replica
Neil Raouf, the bass of doom as been rebuilt by Kevin Kaufman with a veneer of tiger maple in the body.
Marguit Valdez thank you Marguit! Cheers
@93bookman
Almost as good as Jaco but better :)
steu claque
I love it but Jaco didn't play like this. He knew when to be silent, a much greater understanding of rythm.
Good but not in the same league as Jaco. Depth of sound, time feel, accuracy of execution, musical conception not on a par. Jaco had the ferocious intensity of the geniuses of the music such as Parker and Bud Powell, the compositional output also.
Like when Jaco played drums...
u mad?
admire the musicianship but im sorry but aint a solo instrument, not for me anyway
Admire deez nuts
Ca me dégoûte ;-)
