probably the only guitar player who is able to play with de Lucia one day and joke around with lagrene the other day...I would smile too...What a record this man...remained very humble and kind..

Amazing how McLaughlin and Lagrene play off each other alternating intricate picking, comping, wailing, walking, and ENJOYING each other. I was enjoying the interplay so much when they returned to the Coltrane line, I was almost surprised. Excellent. Thank you for posting this.
All those who say "Johnny Mac has no soul" just don't listen. More artists play his stuff and want to appear with him than any other artist since Jimmy. Oh that's right, John did a gig with him also. lol
John is always smiling :) and I'm pretty sure he plays every duos or trios like "peace fights"... like in the early 80's with corryel and Paco de Lucia
Interesting comment. Reminds me of the time I was a teenager in the 60's and I played "Four and More" by Miles Davis for my friends. I was certain that they would really dig it. Before the first song was half-way through they all told me to take that record off the turntable so they could listen to Diana Ross and The Supremes! They thought jazz was pure noise. It was to them but, of course, not to me.
@4578a and @Dubaiman123 The reason McLaughlin is smiling is because he enjoys their magnificent conversation. It's not about playing the most notes per second or being the best, it's about enjoying eachother's art of improvising, an together creating a wonderful dialogue. It's like a conversation between Jesus and Barack Obama.
@highlandbrian Indeed, I'm sure we'll find all sorts of neat things to disagree on, & I look forward to it! I met Scofield when I let Scott Henderson borrow my 4x12 cabinet; he's very much taller than his pictures let on...
@filtecuk Ill agree with you there. Im actually in uni studying jazz performance at the moment and there are a few too many people who dont consider anything outside bebop "proper jazz" its people like that who'll never be successful or happy. Btw, My channel doesnt have any jazz videos theyre just really old metal ones incase you look, im to self concious to post the jazz tuff im playing now as i havent been doing it that long :P
Yeah, I think it's good we have differing opinions, I don't know why people get soo defensive. The argument usually goes from the guitarist to attacking each other over grammatical and spelling mistakes.
Are you basing this stupid comment on this video only, or on McLaughlin's entire body of work? No one who has ever picked up a guitar done more for the instrument than John Mclaughlin.
ze gut zing ist they ple very fucking gut. most people leaving negative comments could not play well the 6 open strings, provided they even had an axe...
They are both playing Gibsons. I think McLaughlin's is officially a Johnny Smith model, Lagréne's an L5 with a floating pickup. They are essentially the same guitar, 17 inch lower bout, carved from solid wood.
@BuddyDog03 In jazz or fusion , U can not tell that's shredding or blablablabla .. All is in the phrasing and creativity ! note choices ! playing in time ! playing through the chords and not over them ... man ! I feel Sorry for you if your brain has stopped on this kind of remarks .. But John and Bireli played what they played ! and it's GREAT whatever u're saying !
@highlandbrian You do know that John was one of the many musicians that took BL under his wing and befriended him when he was a child. He may well argue with you your seeming antipathy and truculence towards Bireli. You strike me as a traditionalist, well, at least partly; jazz purists wouldn't like J Mac because of his connections to fusion jazz. I have lots of purist leanings, but I love (basically) all types of jazz, including the gypsy stuff, which is also some of George Benson's favorite..
@highlandbrian it wasn't my remark; my manners and emotions are just fine, thank you, and I wasn't a part of the conversation you had with the other guy. It's only music, and not even our own music, so why are we getting all riled up? I was only calling you on your own use of the profane. One day we will not all be so anonymous, & then what do we do? Basic manners...

Negative comments about Bireli show the immense musical stupidity of those who write them. Bireli is a genius and he is music all by himself.
True
Bireli is music

The interaction between the two of these master is great. This is what its all about right here. Thanks for posting
As Miles Davis said about John McLaughlin: " He's the one, the killer," Incredible what this man is able to play!
This is probably the most fun Bireli Lagrene has had playing guitar
Bireli plays always citations, I love that, and at 2:09 it's Joe Zawinul/Weather Report "Birdland", nice.
Great catch! I missed it the first go around.
Consider this, both these guys spent tens of thousands of hours learning and perfecting their craft.
Actually Bireli just needed a relatively short time to reach a level of mastery on guitar.
Well- with even less than 10 hours practicing a day you'll reach the 10 000 hours in 3 years

He didn't do a gig with him
All those who say this need to listen to ruclips.net/video/iYVaEe97jcI/видео.html
Au début, il y a la façon dont John McLaughlin installe le rythme et le tempo; c'est magistral et ça tient tout le morceau. magnifique
John is always smiling :) and I'm pretty sure he plays every duos or trios like "peace fights"... like in the early 80's with corryel and Paco de Lucia
John Mc.Laughin'
The Pope of Guitar
John Mclaughlin has a very genuine style
John's got the Vegas hairdo. Wish I had that much hair left at his age! 2 of the best guitarists over the last 40 years
Get a wig.

Oh and remember this, no matter how good, sweet, fast, fluent, articulate,.....you are, there's always somebody...........................! Nuff said.
!!Outstanding!! (says a mortal human who,is watching)
Their smiles say it all...
This is absolutely brilliant! Thanks for posting. Never saw this before.
FANTASTIC !
Bireli sounds terrific comping with a walking bass line under John's solo.
A lesson in Playing (>in the original sense of the word) !
John is much more musical in this.
John: surprise me…! He embodies what playing is all about
იპროვიზაციის ორი გენიოსი სხვადასხვა თაობიდან..🎉
Mr. Mclaughlin is able to be a bluesman. Whenever he wants or needs to play in that way. But , mamma mia, he hardly does it!!
yeah his phrasing is exquisite
@4578a and @Dubaiman123

Barack Obama a surtout discuté avec Satan, dont il est le plus fidèle adepte!
John plays nice chords.

@highlandbrian Henderson is very nice, and a great player. I kinda run hot & cold on Carlton---I do like Ford, though.

@steofairc John always smiles when he is playing guitar. He is just a good liver.

Because this was recorded on May the Fourth.
@sREUDIAN fLIP LOL, you must be at least...oh I don't know, 16 years old.
Off the proverbial hook.
Two "frenchmen" jamming on jazz/blues. How often do you see that?
Two monsters of their craft..
Fellas, make some noise with these scraps of wood & wire.
Yep.
@steofairc i've noticed that he always smiles while playn' with lagrene...they must get along well
the white socks?? unreal!!!
wow !
3:43 genius!
Like heavy
I prefer Mclaughlin's style and swing !
@highlandbrian Indeed, I'm sure we'll find all sorts of neat things to disagree on, & I look forward to it! I met Scofield when I let Scott Henderson borrow my 4x12 cabinet; he's very much taller than his pictures let on...

Simply said,John picks harder and is absolutely superior in alternate picking. That's what matters to me.
@highlandbrian
Spot on
Both utterly brilliant but for me the two approaches don't quite gel.
Yeah, I think it's good we have differing opinions, I don't know why people get soo defensive. The argument usually goes from the guitarist to attacking each other over grammatical and spelling mistakes.
Yeeeessssss
Bereli All Day! Love it..John is loving it..Beauty!!
White socks will help you guys to play like this .....
Transcendental noodling

@sREUDIAN fLIP lol sure
@Levithia100 I think they were both made by a little American company called "Gibson"....LOL
ze gut zing ist they ple very fucking gut. most people leaving negative comments could not play well the 6 open strings, provided they even had an axe...
agreed
Plays John McLaughlin and Bireli Lagrene a Gretsch guitar??? I know it not, but looks almost as out of. Love this sound!!
They are both playing Gibsons. I think McLaughlin's is officially a Johnny Smith model, Lagréne's an L5 with a floating pickup. They are essentially the same guitar, 17 inch lower bout, carved from solid wood.
Lagrene have there Gibson Super V BJB
J macs playing sounds like a bee?

Pour ceux qui veulent voir un match de tennis, ce n'est pas ici!
Birdland !!! - 2:10 :D
I guess Trane would sign off on this. They are superior musicians. The only thing missing from this cover is the feeling of soul music.
Get cute with me junior and this is what you get....
Yes- you can enjoy it. I don`t . So there are only two different opinions.
It´s funny how you react...:-) Korsaro and Mickael
Hm I enjoy that interpretation... a subtle joke though.
1:45 oh sh-
Yes they are just having fun ..sure but McLaughlin is much better anyway
Much better in smiling, you are right. In guitar playing? Both achieved mastery, they are both legends.

John is smiling out of courtesy, bireli needs to lose the cheap licks and start telling a story!!!
Bireli is the superior player.
@@mitchie2267 I agree
