Bireli's smile at 2:06 when hearing Sylvain's accompaniment is priceless. Same as Sylvain's, as a reaction to Bireli's overtones at 2:12. Great dialogue.
I'm CRAZY about those aliens who really get a kick out of playing together ;-)
I like very much his idea for his solo on the start. The tapping is quite exiting, but required lots of dexterity indeed.. and he completely nailed it. Still listening to it in 2023.. 😂😂
I come back to this every once in a while just to try to remember how to do it right...
QUEL PIED -What a Kick !!!!
Stuff like that little arpeggio at 1:13 just drives me crazy (in a good way, of course). A7#11 (or Bmaj/A polychord) in the key of G is just nuts (V 7#11 of V - you never hear a #11 in a dominant 7 chord since there are no modes containing the raised 4th and the lowered 7th) and they use use the heck out of it here to wonderful effect. Why can't more people do this?
Denis Chang, a Canadian musician was making a video about how to play like Birelli, in the bloopers you can see Denis asking Birelli to explain what he did, he had no idea, he has not real knowledge of music theory, he probably won't even understand your comment, so he asked Denis to explain in music theory language what he did. That's a real genius, he was born for that, without any knowledge of theory he does stuff that us can't even imagine to do. Birelli is a living legend.
If you go back and listen to Nelson Riddle arrangements he also liked to use that sound on dominant II chords, it's not that uncommon. It's also in the melody of "Take The A Train".
The split diamond on the head stock and fingerboard inlays make me think super 400, L5 should have a different headstock. I've seen him play several super 4s, he always makes them look smaller than they really are. Problem is the fingerboard isn't pointed which isn't right for a super 4 or l5...maybe a super 300?
It’s the Gibson Super V. I own the prototype of this, Bireli’s version. Identifiers, the finger style tailpiece, diamond headstock inlay and split finger board inlays, L5 body, (17 inch bout), Super 400 neck. Color is tobacco sunburst. These guitars sound amazing, they have a deep throaty growl about them and notes have a mellow roundness.
Sorry to say that... i love to listen it during a dinner show... but i couldn't for a whole concert. After 5 minutes, i feel boring. Maybe i'm not a good listener.
It’s because there isn’t enough of the melody to keep the ear intrigued. We have to have what we recognize in order to engage. But the solos are...otherworldly!
Rip Sylvain
Quelle triste nouvelle. Il reste la musique. Merci l’artiste !
One of the most amazing performances on guitar ever!! RIP Sylvain !
legendary concert! Shocked to learn about Sylvains passing
Rest in peace Sylvain 😭 🫶

What about Lydian Dominant? Raised 4th and lowered 7th
