Saw Weather Report live in the late 70's. Greatest thing I ever saw live. Jaco did his "Slang" solo. Unbelievable show.

@@StrateleStudios Saw him with Weather Report at Wolftrap Jazz Festival. Awesome. Saw him later at Blues Alley in Georgetown with his small group. Unfortunately he was getting a little strange by then. Early eighties. Playing was still awesome, but he was kind of angry off stage.

@@StrateleStudios I don't remember, but the Weather Report concert was the single best musical event I've ever been to. Wayne Shorter came out alone and smoked the place for about 15 minutes unaccompanied. The Jaco solo was his deal with Portrait of Tracy and Third Rock from teh Sun mixed together. They were playing all of the Heavy Weather material.

Weather Report was one of my main door openers into jazz. Loved them. Remember I was driving bus as a student and had them on the stereo in the bus, only in the front and on a low volum one Saturday night. A slightly elderly passenger gave the thumbs up and a "Good taste, son" when exiting.
Then I knew I was on the right track😄

Each of those four players are phenomenal and have their own unique styles; with that said, I think I've never been more impressed by any bass player than when I've heard Richard Bona not only soloing at a hyperspeed, but also SCATTING along with his playing. A few years have passed since I've first seen it, but it remains one of my favourite bass videos of all time

The range of approaches just shows how inspiring Jaco was as a player, as was his composition.
A 4 course meal of Teen Town! Delightful! You select the appetizer, entree, salad and dessert. I remember Michael Manring in 1981 in the DC area with the band “Natural Bridge “ also featuring Gregg Karukas.

Mr. Miller is a beast in his own right. Jaco stretched my mind in the early days just trying to used to his dressing attire and his lead skills. Miller is invited in to lead...rightly so instead of leading on his own. Michael Manring...one man band! Annapolis native but actually never listened to him until 10 minutes ago.

Hey, Jeff! As always, it's great watching another of your reaction videos. And this one was truly GREAT!!!! Haven't Richard Bona or Michael Manring in a good long while. And I LOVE both their playing styles. Also, I'd never even heard either of them play "Teen Town" before. Jaco's I'd heard as a kid. And, of course, I've heard Marcus' version. Even have that in my library. This was freakin' GREAT!!!! Got me feeling really good right about now. You just MADE MY DAY with this one, brother!!!! Thank you so much.

I was so lucky to see Zawinul live in Amsterdam during the Zawinul Syndicate World Tour. That was a super band. Can only imagine what it would be like to hear Jaco live.
I still have all my vinyl, including Weather Report, Return to Forever, Keith Jarrett, The Kuhn Brothers, Miles Davis, John Coltrane. The list goes on.

Of course the original with Jaco is my fav, i really like slap version of Marcus and the Richard competition against the trumpet is so fun. Michael made all band solo, a great job!
I absolutely love how you did this Jeff by showcasing each different take on this classic. I have always regarded Heavy Weather to be the very best record I have ever owned and truly believe it should be a MUST in any collection. It always pains me to think of what we lost with Jaco's passing but his legacy is undeniable as so skillfully demonstrated by your choices today. His work on Joni Mitchell's Don Juan's reckless Daughter or the Mingus tribute is first class. His playing is instantly recognizable, innovative and unique and that in itself is greatness! Genius!!
You said it Tim! Heavy Weather has been a part of my soul since it came out. It still have my favorite musical composition of all time “A Remark You Made”. This music is incredibly deep, soulful, melancholy and reflective. It’s brilliant to say the least. I’ve read the Jaco biography 3 times and always shed a tear by the end.

😂 Absolutely love your initial reaction to Richard Bona's version- I had the exact same reaction the first time I saw him- he was playing with Pat Metheny and took a solo on Bright Size Life that had my mouth completely agape- I believe there are clips on youtube of that gig. Great clip!🙏🏽

Micheal Manring is awesome! He is a very underrated bass player now a days but he was one of the original solo bassists along with Miller, Wooten, Bailey, Jaco, Bona, Clarke, 70s to 90s soloists ect. Manring is awesome and has stretched the boundaries of solo bass in his own right especially in terms of harmony and recapitulation.
He doesn’t get enough love for sure!

Awesome video. I've seen all of these over the years and of course especially the original Jaco version too many times lol, but never really compared them like this and I forgot that Michael also had such a cool version even though he's one of my favourite musicians ever.

Wow, great line-up of interpretations! Jaco will always have my awe, of course. Marcus IS my all-time fav. bassist. I need to listen to more Richard Bona - what I've come across of him in the past was not nearly as "cut loose" as this performance!

I’ve listened to the Studio recording for years, that bass line is doubled on keys, but it’s buried in the mix. So it feels like a fuller bass signal.
I never noticed it before because it was so low in the mix but it is there.

You have to check Hadrien Feraud and Chris Coleman playing Teen Town. Is crazy!!!
It's easy to overlook the fact that while Manring was a student of Jaco's, he didn't become a carbon copy. He actually went on to innovate the instrument even further by co-creating the Hyperbass w/ Joe Zon and turning it into a truly solo instrument. So, while I love his version of 'Teen Town', it really doesn't showcase what separates him from all the other traditional players, how he pioneered bass playing and, imho, what makes his contribution a highly important moment in music history. Don't believe me? Check out 'Adhan' from his album 'Thonk' where he uses an ebow or really showcases his alternate tuning on the fly with 'The Enormous Room'. To me, Michael Manring really doesn't get the credit he deserves...

I think the golden era was 1967-1977. Creativity at its apex. After that disco and punk began and despite great musicians here and there the game became a dollar hunting : disk industry.

I played drums and percussion in a Weather Report cover band called Vertical Invader during High School in the 70's. They are still a favorite of mine.

First time I heard Marcus slap Teen Town was with Kenwood Dennard in the early 90’s. Slower tempo but a great album to check out. Cheers!

Also in studio (Heavy Weather) and live (8 : 30) the bass line was doubled by the keyboards.

Weather Report, "The Cadillac of Jazz Fusion bands" per Downbeat Magazine. This article was from 1977 or 78. Weather Reports world tour was in 1978 and came to Omaha Ne the very end of October or first couple of days of November. Weather Reports' album 8:30 are tunes from that tour. I'm well aware of Marcus' version of Teen Town but not Manring or Bona's version.
Richard Bona was incredible as a member of Pat Metheny Group on the Speaking Of Now album. Check out some of his performance from the live recordings. He is an incredibly gifted singer as well.
Oh, but he's not the bassist on that album/tour. He sings and plays the guitar and the kalimba.

@@wmboyd925 Victor Whooten is great. But the musicianship and technique of Richard stands in its own. Victor is by far the best slap technical efficient bassist wizardry genius i ever seen. But IMHO what Richard can do and sing, haven’t had that effect since Jaco. Fast and clear with tone and precision. And makes it look eeeeeeeasyyyyyy.
A healthy debate, I agree Richard Bona is beyond belief as Victor is unbelievable.When it comes to slapping/popping and funk, Marcus Miller rules.
@@wmboyd925 Marcus is legend status due to being on so many many many studio giants recordings and solidifying his brilliance in slap basing. For sure. Best pocket player ever. Lol Victor, best funk soloist i ever heard on bass, although Mononeon may surpass with his style. Richard is just that dude. Not overly hyped in talks of great unique bassists. But when you hear him, specifically live, 😱 whew. But I agree. Healthy debate. They are all tops in their respective styles and careers. No doubt.

I find it humorous that Pat Metheny is so good that he could hire one of the world's best bass players as his vocalist/multi-instrumentalist. I know there is some material out there with Richard Bona playing bass with Pat, but it seems pretty sparse.

@@StrateleStudios i got to meet him briefly. He was set to play the old chestnut caberet in philly with jorma k hot tuna. I was 3rd in a long line at the door. We heard a loud argument, then j came through carring percussion stuff. He was bald, some people didnt reconize him. I asked him if he was going to play fot us tonight. He replied that he would never play in this place ever. He then went down the line and told people to go home, he wasnt playing. He wasnt drunk but his was pissed. We went in and saw jorma play for 3 hours, he was great, but i really was bummed about not seeing jaco.

no, he hated Teen Town said it's not a Weather Report song, he was trashing it by playing the same line as Joco so you could not really hear the man who wrote the song.
That’s probably more likely, ya. Though there was a lot of approval seeking on Jaco’s part and never really got it.
Jaco is the Jimi of bass: there is a before and an after, and afterwards the world of music (and especially bass) will never be the same...
Stanley Clarke would be the "Jimi" of bass guitar, Lopsy Lu and Return to Forever blew everyone out of the water and it's never been the same since.
@@wmboyd925 That is your opinion, I actually think Jaco's influence is more fundamental. Especially in the way he used (different kinds of) chords and scales and harmonics and of course because he introduced the fretless electric bass
Slapping, upright/double bass, lead bass, harmonics and not to mention speed. I started playing bass because of Stanley and heard Jaco which expanded me in a different way. Both born in Philadelphia in February they ruled the 70s equally and differently. 1a and 1b🎼🎸

Out of the three, I liked the last guy RB,little bit fast but cool NTL ,however not crazy about MM ,although technically challenging, just couldn't get into the slap version, and the other guy who used the looper,not impressed ,sounds like sht you do in your bedroom, get a band man! Never did like the " one man band" bs,seems narcissistic to me," hey look I'm an overachiever, look what I can do," and didn't even do the song justice, If I can just put it out there, BTW great job ,great piece Teen Town, classic fusion, 👍catch you on the next one

Didn´t like Marcus Miller cause in the end it was more like a percussive noise fest than a melodic solo.

In the rock genre, Chris Squire was WAY out in front making the bass a contributor to melody. And he followed the lead of John Entwistle.
I was just listening to YES this morning and I’m still amazed how incredible Squire was. Amazing bass playing, so inventive!
