- The Pogues' live set from Self Aid, at Dublin's RDS, in its entirety. Introduced on-stage by the late great Ronnie Drew. A lively fifteen minutes followed; tracks include "The Sick Bed Of Cúchulainn", Body Of An American", Dirty Old Town" and "Sally MacLennane".
Self Aid was a concert organised to tackle the growing problem of unemployment and emigration in Ireland, heavily leaning on the success of Live Aid the previous year. The Pogues, along with a welter of Irish music's finest, certainly made it a day to remember.
My Dad once went to see the Pogues at the Apollo in Manchester. He wasn't very well at the time and was on heavy medication. He told me there was this warm up act that all jumped out of a fridge one by one... He thought they was amazing and couldn't stop dancing despite him not being very well. I said... Dad. . I think they were the Pogues.
@johnmartlew I agree, Slainte' to the both of you, as well as dear old Dad.
2002, may have been at the same concert. It was extraordinary. We were near an Irish granny who brought her grandchildren to see this phenomenon. She set up a dancing set and we all joined in, an almost out of body experience. Shane didn’t seem to be too well that night but we so glad to be able to be part of it.
Did they really jump out of a fridge???
@@joannehack7588 according to my very drunk and over medicated Dad yes.
Yes, very probable, things do jump out when immersed in the music and spirit
I like that song - Body Of An American - It starts like a lovely old traditional dance tune, then goes a bit mad and finishes gloriously in a fine piece of Irish music - Those memories of the great nights of my young life are rushing back to me in Camden Town - My friend at work told me all about this band called the Pogues - I went to their concerts in London and it was completely exhilarating - The crowd used to be hopping from the front to the back - Oh I loved Shane - I shed quite a few tears when I heard he had died for he was a one off musical genius.
Used in The Wire cop funeral scenes.
From Spain, Shane rest in pace. 😪😪. You live in our souls, your music will be always in our hearts. Thank you.
Listening to his music and lyrics, Lord knows that Shane absolutely adored Spain!
Yes, Shane and his band , music will live forever. 🎶🎵♩🎶🎵♩🎷🎷🎷🎸🎵🎶🎵🎶
Thanks for the music Shane! Rest in Peace 💚
Amen
Дорогой мой Ирландский брат! Спасибо тебе ✌️и привет из России. А Шэйну Царствие небесное и земля ему пухом🙏
Its crazy how many people come back to this everyday... this song is masterpiece!!
Oh no doubt! This performance as well as their St. Patrick's Day performance at the Town & Country back in the late 1980's. It's here on RUclips in its full version and it's absolutely magnificent!! Shane was not of this planet!
Thank you for this one, not seen before, still grieving the death of Shane, up there with the greats of Irish artists of all time.
What a fine bunch is well dressed, most respectful and honorable men and lady Caitlín O'Riordan in this band The Pogues were any mother would be very proud to call anyone one of those boys their son and Caitlín a daughter, I believe that the young people of today will learn a lot from those boys and lassie especially the lead singer. and the music, well is swings like heck and the people love it and so do I.
Some angel forgot a Pogues cassette in my fathers van in 1987. I was 13. Still stirs up same great emotions. My kids sang this song before Mary had a little lamb
First time I heard the bass in the mix. Dint know they were a girl
Shane is just from another planet.!!!!Talk about genuine talent comes naturally to this man.!!!!!
michael king,
Yeah, a planet where they can’t sing, their front teeth are made of shoepeg corn, they can fly with their ears, and they just don’t care if their mommas couldn’t love them.
@@imstillright9261 haha the coke teeth HAHA
LOL
One of the best song writers without doubt .
Why such bad words?@@imstillright9261
They're musicians through and tbrough, old school! 👌💜💯
The world is a sorrowful place without Shane 😢
It's very sad when the music ends. Sadder still when the singer runs out of songs
Shane McGowan cut his heart and bled out the most beautiful and haunting songs that touched us
He will be missed
Sublime. Thanks so much Shane MacGowan. Missing you RIP 💚🍀
1:07 The Sickbed of Cuchulainn
4:30 The Body of an American
9:00 Dirty Old Town
12:55 Sally MacLennane
What a true man he was excellent song writer
RIP beautiful soul - Youre never be forgotten
I was at this concert 😊
When I lived in New Zealand all they talked aboout was Shane and Pogues 💚💚💚
I was there that day. It was amazing. This was my introduction to the Pogues and I was blown away. So fun!
how that happends?
yeah this was the peak of the pogues and Shane before everything went to shit and they got ole joe strummer to preform with them after they kicked Shane out for being a proper mess all of the time. I'm Jealous!
@@collinmallett1206 its such a great story. i was a fan of Nirvana and some russian siberian punk rock, it got revolution in world. But not in music, in poetry. Well want if, try to listen Black Lukich - wilted flower or Черный Лучик - Завял Цветок by siberian
@@emptymail9336 ok i will give them a listen
Was Lucky to see them twice....❤❤❤
Ich liebe die THE POGUES, was für eine großartige BAND. Jeder einzelne so gut. ❤ 🎉DANKE 😘🥀

Coeur énorme Shane 💚💚💚 je t'aime 🥂🍾
That might be the best 15 minute concert of all-time. Thanks for sharing this.
truly
It's certainly great, but i still think Queen's set at Live Aid claims that honour 🙂
Today i meet The Pogues, amazing!
Defintely a Joe Strummer moment and Shane is Shane dont know if both "clashed " so good to hear no soft rock stuff, give me this energy anytime and the band dudes who take simple imstruments, aka a penny whistle and play with gusto and such expertise.
Shane lived life on his terms.
As good as it gets
R.I.P Shane, thanks for the music ❤😢😢
Brilliant! Thanks for this, remember watching this on TV in '86.
Would be even better if it's possible to correct the video with the sound. Especially now Shane's gone & this is an important part of the history of the Pogues. RIP Shane. xx
Do you have a RUclips channel? I could sync it for you....
Absolutely fantastic!
Stacy plays the a-part of Guns of Navarone in The Body of an American at 6:37!!

What a lineup!! I would love to have been there. It was only 4 years later when I first visited Ireland and I fell in love with it. Now I'm addicted to The Pogues.
:( RIP Shane
I can't stop reading about Shane. I am convinced he was sent from Irish Heaven
Me too 🙏💕

Rough as guts but so pure , you know what you get with the Pogues, so good too see a Dubliner, John Shea introduce as well.

The only time you will see a mosh pit with Irish music
I was telling my mates about this performance and how the crowd was bouncing and moving the whole time they were laying down chords. Great performance all around!
Now I know where the REM dude got those 3 notes for the mandolin for Losing my religion from.
Maybe he was more influenced by south of USA mandolin?
His own musical heritage.
Hard to know, in my opinion, and I am a great Pogues fan and also a mandolinist.
Cheers !

I was there.
Que de tiempo sin oir a dientes pochos
One of the funniest concerts trying to get people working within a society that the 99 percent are either gone on drinking or the H addiction. But then to hear Bono saying "I'm gonna get a job in my home town mister". As if someone else was telling him to work somewhere else. Then he moves away after the gigantic earnings each year is mostly going to the Irish government. So much for home rule eh?
that's U2 for you. shower of bastards.
Anchor tour original pogues..shalky😊
Il était jeune, il était beau!!!Comme moi!!!!!:

Better dubbing would make this completely perfect 👌 Black cans matter!!
Sadly it teeth have not yet been made in dubbing live gigs of iconic Irish folk who are in such m rythem as the first one to find the perfect sound was him don't judge the delicate sound of his conviction at mud
