- Here's a really great quality early show with The Pogues. Lots of really rare stuff featuring, And The Band Played Waltzing Matilda, and Whiskey You're The Devil.
Shane MacGowan, Jem Finer, James Fearnley, Cait O' Riordan, Andrew Rankin,Spider Stacy, Philip Chevron.
Why aren't some of you Europeans getting some video of these guys up? Would be great to see fairytale with them dressed in monks clothes...I know there's some better quality vids out there from BBC too....c'mon fos let's get some stuff up here!

Yup 14 years ago my last comment...still the best band ever..WOEHA...
Brilliant Battle of Brisbane. The good version. The thick beer tray.
Saw them in 1986 at Margate......my best gig ever 👍
I would have loved to be there too, but was only 2 at the time! Will always love the Pogues and Shane!
Saw them in McGonagles Dublin 1st March 1985. Same set list as this concert. Had a few pints with them in McDaids pub the afternoon before the gig.. met them again the next day and went to Ireland v France rugby match with Daryl & Spider.. best weekend of my life!
Thumbs up for Spider playing the drink tray!!!! Happy St Pat's everyone!
I've seen them in L.A., London, and Dublin, and NO ONE does "Waltzing Matilda" better than Shane!
Saw em Margate 1986.....best gig I have EVER been to......abso fukcinglutely brilliant! 👍
Oh Shane ich missing you every day. From germany
seeing them the 13th in philly and the 15th in nyc...nothing better than the pogues...NOTHING....
you can imagine my joy when I heard Body Of An American on The Wire which is my favorite show....
I have been following the Pogues since the early days at the "Mean Fiddler when they played as a supporting band.
Nothing gets it going more than the "Beer Tray Solo" !!!!!!
the pouges are one of the most under rated bands of all time great passion, and great lyrics pure music
By 1982, MacGowan was busking Irish folk numbers around London with the banjo-picker Jem Finer, and gradually the two of them built a group around themselves, in what appeared to be an attempt to inject punk energy into the Emerald Isle’s roots traditions.
“But that energy was already there in Irish music,” MacGowan insists today. “We just added a bass guitar and a very simple drum set, with a very loud drummer, who was stood up in the middle. He was like this,” says MacGowan clenching his fist, “and then we had Spider [Stacy, co-vocalist and tin-whistle player] bashing himself on the head with a beer tray - another traditional Irish instrument.” He punctuates this statement with a death-rattle laugh every bit as infectious as the Pogues’ initial formula.
ahh...takes me back to the wild old days. What a band!
That was friggin' AWESOME! I first encountered the Pogues (circuitously) on a trip to Ireland in 1990 -- a folk singer sang "And The Band Played Waltzing Matilda" in a pub and it took a while after that to track these guys down...I only wish they'd played all 347 verses in this live version, though.
this is the video that really turned me onto the pogues!
Vintage footage of the greatest band in the world. Thanks for posting, mate. Cheers!
I've seen them five times, the best seven nights of my life!
Seven Drunken Nights eh!
I'm 18, I live in quebec, listen to metal and love this band.
What a performance! The POGUES with Shane MacGowan are playing Greenwich Summer Sessions in London on 30th July...can't wait!!!
Could there have been a dry eye in the house after that wrenching rendition of waltzing Mathilda? The Pogues are truly a band apart, and Shane has no equal ;his voice and his heart come from the same place.
without doubt one of the best videos i have ever seen anywhere you must be proud owning this video cheers and beers mitch26.irish eyes are smiling.
as we're all aware both the Irish and drummers in general are brilliant folk.......
Extra rare "And the band play waltzing Mathilda" des Pogues, à 13:26. Une des plus belles chansons d'histoire... Il n'y avait que la TV allemande pour filmer ça à l'époque, pour que ça reste dans les annales d'Internet :)
A dargle was an old social/dance. Spider still cracks me up all these years later.
annikee59. The WAXIES were candlemakers in Dublin and every year they had a day out to Bray in Co Wicklow, which is situated on the river Dargle.
saw the pogues in manchester a few years ago M.E.N. (2008) " I think", I loved every minute of it, I was so excited at the mix of those attending, all the young people, with their weird hair styles, best night of my life (so far)
Ah, those were the days. First went to a Pogues gig in london 85 (I was looking for myself in the audience). Attended another a year so later in norwich, and several other performances in the 90's.
But the first gig was the best. That's when the Pogues were THE band. I remember a reviewer from Sounds commenting that he hadn't seen so many people puking up since his first high school disco when someone laced the punch with whisky.
Kids today have no idea what real what real fun is.
This is so interesting; I'm sucked in. About 10 minutes into the video I'm just taking a break for some Irish whisky and to type this. The instrumentation (Shane's 12-string, an accordion, banjo, weird drum set and the crazy-talented penny-whistle guy who also sings and smacks his head w/a tambourine) could only be more whacked if they had bagpipes. Then there's Shane's persona - those ears, teeth and attitude - he's almost handsome, and is the epitome of punk. His vocals are nothing short of perfect for these songs. Kudos to whoever captured this great early footage and to you who uploaded it.
Beautiful video. Such a positive attitude.
Top video. Brings back many memories as it was 1985 I first saw the Pogues live. The start of a long and beautiful relationship !
The beer tray is an underrated instrument and no one can play it like Spider can.
Right on Gaelic!
im only 15 first saw the pogues live when i was 3months old
one of there songs was actually playing over the hospital radio as i was being born
greatest band ever
you cannot get much better than this
LONG LIVE THE POGUES
and it's been favorited 1,372 times too. I spent years looking for a video that had and the band played waltzing matilda . i'm going to see them in march at the 9:30 club probably not much chance they'll play it there but it sure would be cool.
This is one of my favorites too, good thing I posted it back in early youtube, nothing over 10 minutes now.
Sprained my ankle thrash-jigging at one of their London gigs around this time. Had to be carried out - so embarrassing... Luckily it was near the end - it still rates as one of the best nights ever!
Its Cait O Riordan. The girl with the beautiful voice on "Im a man you dont meet everyday". She played with The Pogues on their first two albums.
go on Mitch love that comment haha, got this whole event on DVD in brill DVD Copy it's my favourite, i also went to see them in manchester 2009. was fantastic shane was near enough sober even he came on with a bottle of SAMBUCA it was gr8
Ha! Best part is the frantic cries of "What we doing?". Greatest band in the world.
I always dance a hole in the floor to the pogues and feel drunk when its over, even tho I be havin nothin but a cuppa tea! a distillation of all things musical and Irish! I love em!
'the band played waltzing matilda' gets me going every time. brilliant

A Paddy's Day treat for real, thank you so much!
Fantastic stuff and great memories. Thanks for the upload mitch26.
I've been there, it was the first of many Pogues gigs I've watched since then. Sadly the BR stopped transforming after 45 mins, because the show continued after the broadcasting.
Brilliant and reminds me of joyous times
This is the best thing I have seen on youtube :) I never get tired of watching this. If only I could somehow download it?
The video is taken from Bavarian TV, about that time I saw the Pogues playing in Hannover, drummer had his left arm in a plaster cast, great time had by all
What an awesome video. Thanks for putting it up. I had never seen them do '...Waltzing Matilda' live, which was nice to see. They should put this as bonus footage for the DVD that they shot while on their recent US tour.
You're lucky! I wish I could go see them!! Have fun, I'm sure it will be an amazing show! :)
saw this on tv, next time i joined them on tour, love them for 25 years now.
and be in munich today for concert.
BEST BAND EVER!
You're in for a real treat, I saw them last night and they were brilliant.
the best band to come out of ireland and yes shane was born in ireland
wow, thank you for posting! This is one of my top five ever. Pogue Mahone.
dude, it's fucking awesome. I saw them there in 2006 and it rocked. seeing them in DC a week before you, so should be sweet. have fun.
the concerts was alltimes funny!i love the pogues!
I love it! Thank you!
I love this video, were is it from, can you buy it? I saw them first in 1986 and by then Shane had already sunken quite a lot. But anyway, he's the one of the greatest songwriters of all times (if not THE greatest)
36 Dislikes? OK, I appreciate that we're all individuals, but wtf is not to like about this? Never saw 'em live, & on the basis of this vid, that's my loss.
Thanks for posting!
An Irish friend told me that The Pogues gigs are like death metal gigs.... I didn't really believe him until I watched this!
Superb. Saw them first in 1984 and then 1986/87, before they went downhill as Shane deteriorated.
Glad everyone is enjoying it. Am going to see them at the 9:30 Club. I'd love to get a vid pass for the show but haven't been able to get contact info for Joey, and it's very rare that they'll give permission, he did approve it once before with The Popes and I have a song from that posted.
As a Lebanese American, people don't know this, but the early IRA Leaders visited Lebanese, and were trained by the Lebanese Christian Guerrillas on home bomb making, and military tactics effective against the English. (Lebanese fought for their independence from the English and French). The Irish brought with them music and whiskey, and Till this day, The Lebanese Catholics LOVE IRISH MUSIC, and consider the Irish our Brothers in Arms, and in Marriage. Many of my relatives are married to Irish Men, and Women. LONG LIVE IRELAND, because not only Irish men lost their lives for independence, but so did my Uncle, and 3 Cousins, as they died next to their brothers fighting for a FREE IRELAND! Cheers to the IRISH, and the Best Music in the World!
Great Clip Mitch.Thanks! ;-)
it's fresh for ever I think, love it
hey cheers for this,,pour you one some day for this.
do they even make 'em or write 'em like this any more? I mean, Shane is a true troubadour... And Spider! ouch, watch the head, son! Cait, tough/ pretty punk, (which took nerve in those days... 'specially for a girl) the instruments... everything here... THIS is what i call ART
Incredible. I wish the sound quality was better though :(

It's on Red Roses For Me, It's called The Battle of Brisbane
First song is Battle of Brisbane
Great and erley, you can hear how Spider realy cant play the thin. Love it! Thanxx
Legendary band
timeless classic
I was at that show. Great gig, but shame they didn't play Fairytale.
That’s because this was about three years before they wrote Fairytale…
they are touring the US this summer/fall. I just bought tickets for Kansas City this October.
great taste and very mature.. :)
I really fucking love the Pogues, hello from Paris
many many thanks for posting this!
this is really great
That must have been a brilliant night.
I've been there, was the first of my many many Pogues gigs. 10 DM and 60 km to drive. Sadly the BR as usually broadcasted only about 45 min. Of course the gig went on for lucky me ;-)
wow pogues rule.watzing matilda that was amazing
If only Shane could still mumble nearly this coherently.... I was too young to see them back in the day, but hopefully they come back to the NE this St Patty's... Even if Shane sounds like Marlon Brando these days...
cada cierto tiempo veo este concierto, siempre the pogues me recuerda que todo puede estar mejor.. que increible grupo, que siempre vivan y nunca desaparescan.
A huevo.
can't believe i missed the farewell tour!
This is amazing!! For once Shawn and the band aren't TOO drunk and it shows in the tightness of the performance.
Magnificent!
