    Every leg for the Canadians was perfect, but what impressed me the most was Robert (Blast Off) Esmie's start. It was incredible. Bruny knew that when the exchange with Donovan was clean, nobody was going to catch Bailey.

    The first two handoffs for Canada might be the two best handoffs in track and field history. Absolutely perfect! The last one from Surin to Bailey was very mediocre, as Bailey actually peaked back, but the race was long over at that point. USA still trying to figure out how to make an exchange 28 years later.

      Me!!!!!! Fantastic races for Canada. The difference between Canada's two golds is in '96 they had Donovan, the world record holder. This year, not one Canadian made the final of either the 100 or 200. Both are incredibly special to Canadian track people.

    • @brycemcneil4404
      @brycemcneil4404 Месяц назад +2

      Carl wasn't among the Top Four 100m runners for the team by then and he hadn't attended the training camp for the squad. If he *really* wanted to be out there, he'd have fought for it and given the potential history involved (ten golds, etc.), he would have been out there. But I don't think he wanted to be.
      Deep down, I think he knew they were going to lose & it would burnish his reputation more to be in the "we woulda won if we just ran Carl" position. As it turned out, it was more lopsided than expected so he wouldn't have made a difference even if he ran beyond expectations. The Chicago Tribune lede on the race read ""The U.S. sprint relay lost Saturday. Carl Lewis won. He never took a step." That was the lede Carl wanted, and he got it.
      The United States lost because simply put, they were the underdogs except no one bothered to tell them (or the American broadcasters). They weren't the defending world champions and didn't have the fastest two men on the backend. Pretty much *every* 100m relay before (and many after), it was logical to surmise they'd win and win by a lot. This happened to be an exception but there was plenty of evidence *showing* them this would be an exception. Yet somehow they were stunned by it.
