  • (www.tandfunlimited.com/1996.html) One of the great women's relay races. The USA was able to move to the lead on the penultimate leg by Kim Graham and Jearl Miles was able to hold the lead on the anchor leg. Miles was tested to the end by Falilat Ogunkoya who ran a great anchor for Nigeria, with a tremendous closing sprint also from Grit Breuer of Germany who almost came clear of the field in the closing stretches.

    Kim. Graham. Wow. I cannot believe she made up that gap and gave the U.S. a solid lead . She blew past Opara like she was standing still. Unbelievable. And Grit Breuer! I would love to see the split she ran on that leg. That was an unbelievable run! Both Miles and Ogunkoya were hurting bad in the last 40 meters or so, which is why Miles was able to hang on, but Breuer still almost caught them both. Sheesh! What a great race.

    Much credit and respect to the Nigerian anchor, she definitely left it all on the track. Well done to Team USA for overcoming a mediocre start and gaining the needed momentum to bring home a win. Little did they realize their victory would be the start of Olympic dominance that has lasted for 20 consecutive years and five additional gold medal performances to this point for the women's mile relay. Hopefully Tokyo 2020 will be more of the same.

Miles too was feeling it by the end of the race. Buer, the German seem to have a second wind, but race was over. Awesome, all these female broadcasters reporting on football are missing these awesome females that are doing things their male counterparts aren't. Such as, running in the 4x100 and the 4x400 on the same day. Chesseburough, Flojo,Gwen Torrance, Alice Filex.

      @@ronaldwesby4995 a what event did Gwen Torrance run in a 4 x 400 relay? Im very big fan of hers and know about her 4 x 100 relay runs in Barcelona and Atlanta. But when did she do a 4 x 400, let alone same day?
      Also, anyone out there with knowledge, inside or otherwise, as to WHY Gwen was kept off the 4 x 100 in Seoul, despite finishing in top 3 of the 100 at that years US Trials? (If she wasn't 3rd, it was definitely top 4, and instead the 2nd runner between Alice and FloJo in 88 in the 4 x 100 was only top 6? I'm thinking she got 5th spot at trials)
      I recall there only being reported at the time about the selection of those final 4, but the us Sportscaster, was is Charlie Jenkins or Charlie Jones, never went father than saying just that there was a lot of turmoil and controversy over the selection. Gwen WAS running healthy at those Games, so I don't understand why? Unless a personality clash between Gwen and someone else, or something nefarious of sorts in keeping her off that relay. She didn't medal individually in '88, so she wasn't subjected, be according to the rules in place then, to give a doping sample. Something was possibly going on behind the scenes. Otherwise, they (us coaches) would have explained to the press and made it known why she was being substituted. If nothing to hide about why she didn't run, one would think it to be a natural reason to explain for the substituting. Just always wondered. Just curious

      Actually, the two legs are very similar. They were both behind by about the same margin and then caught the leader, roughly at the same point in the race.
      Allyson's time, was the split of a lifetime, but her team lost.....where as Kim's team, was victorious.

    • @Parker528
      @Parker528 2 года назад +2

      @@gns3185 no. But if you talking about grit she did admit in 92 after failing an out of competition drug test, to knowingly taking an illegal performance enhancing drug I believe Nandrolone. She did this with the understanding that by admitting guilt she would only receive a two-year competition ban and therefore be able to try out for the 96 games. Which she did. Now she is from the old East German system and of course she's not known as a 100 m sprinter making this last 60 m burst of this 400 relay leg highly dubious. I don't understand why she didn't start that burst of speed at the hundred meter margin left. It almost likely would have put the team in first place. But she did later marry her coach who received a I believe he's been banned from coaching for life for knowingly giving his athletes illegal substances without telling them that they were taking steroids. And this was during the German federation era so past the dissolution of the gdr. And so you know her being married to him effectively put her career to an end even though she was past her prime by the time this happened. I believe this is around 2004 or 2005

    • @Parker528
      @Parker528 2 года назад +1

      @@gns3185 to help you understand this a little better. When grit tested positive it was in an out of competition random drug testing procedure during her workout. Random out of competition drug testing started very shortly after the 1988 Summer Olympic games. At the same time, we did not yet have at that point what we now know as the world anti-doping agency or WADA.
      Therefore, the only route for appeal back then was the court of arbitration for sport, which still exists even after the creation of WADA, and they are both independent of each other.
      But because she tested positive out of competition from a result taken during a practice, I don't understand then why you would even ask a about her relay bronze medal being taken away from her? Are you under the wrong impression that she tested positive for a banned substance when she and all other medal winning athletes in this relay, including alternate prelim runners were taken to the doping control room at the stadium? Because if you ARE under the impression she tested positive at these Atlanta Games, you're absolutely wrong. If and only if she tested positive here in Atlanta in that relay for a substance, only then would she & her relay teammates be declared disqualified, the results removed, & the medals returned to be given to the 4th place Jamaican team. By 1996, 4th place finishers were also automatically taken to doping control just in case one of the top 3 finishers would test positive, the IOC mandated 4th place finishers be tested so there would be no doubt that the redistributed bronze went to a dope free relay team. I hope that helps with any confusion about Grit

She is a OG,been to the big stage plenty of times,that's why they put her on anchor. 2.) She is a strong 800 meter runner too, you will absolutely never beat an elite half miler with 150 to go in a 400. #AintHappening

      She should not have moved to the outside though. This gave Ogunkoya an opening and more chance to pass her inside without having to go around if she had the strength. As it turned out she had to work too hard just to get up to Miles so didn't especialy with Miles's 800 strength you speak of, but it was still super risky and dangerous and a potential fatal mistake.

Had this race been anywhere else on the planet, the Nigerians would have one. But the USA team running in front of the home crowd gave them, especially Kim Graham, just enough inspiration to get over the top. The USA and Nigeria anchors gave it their all. Charity Opara-thompson should be considered a saboteur in this race. After a great lead by Fatima Yusuf, she fluffed the Nigerian Gold chase with that shambolic race losing a 10 metres lead and now going further behind another 10 metres. A great team display but gutted with Charity Opara-thompson's performance.

    I was looking for this video, finally I found it. This was the most exciting women's 400 meters I've ever seen. It had all the drama going from third to taking over the race. What a wonderful third leg by Kim Graham. She put the Americans back in the race when she passed the Nigerian runner, what a smart move. It took every bit of energy from Jear! Miles Clark to hold on for the victory. The entire team put so much effort in that race. Truly they deserved the gold medal.

    Charity Opara ran way, way too fast too soon. She should have just calmed down a bit. Ogunkoya probably ran faster than even the gold medalist in the individual race there, but the deficit from Miles was too great. The Germany's last leg was surprisingly fast too

    • @ranhill62
      @ranhill62 5 лет назад +1

      Oparas leg was solid. If you look at the final 50 meters of Oparas leg, the rest closed slightly. Graham pulled away form EVERYONE. Look at her leg again and ignore Graham, you'll see that Opara did really well.

    • @tonywilson8645
      @tonywilson8645 4 года назад +4

      @@ranhill62 Opara ran a crappy leg. It was probably the 6th or 7th faster of the 3rd leg runners only. And I looked it up and it was a 50.7 or something which translates to a 51.6 or so with the rolling start. That is shitty. In the 1st round of the 99 worlds for instance she ran a 51.3, WAY faster than a 51.6, in a 1st round, and she wasn't even running hard there. Stop making excuses for her, yes Graham's leg was insanely good and shocking, but Opara's was terrible.
