    For ALL of her accomplishments, Evelyn Ashford probably did not get the recognition that she should have. In my opinion, she's the best anchor ever...an amazing sprinter💖

      I think that Evelyn Ashford proved herself over the breadth of a long career. I also believe that Ashford was not cheating (doping) and proved so much from pure talent and hard work.

    These Nigeria ladies are legends taking the bronze medal. Beatrice,Faith,Christy and Mary Onyali

      Yes, they are great! In particular Onyali deserves so much praise and recognition. Unfortunately, they were of the same generation with Great 400 runner Falilat Ogunkoya (her squad) and they were shadowed by the mighty Falilat in the world press. Unfortunate! But now days, Blessing Okkabare is carrying the Nigerian Flag in the athletics. Let's wish her good luck in Tokyo!

    Evelyn Ashford actually was on five Olympic teams. Though they did not compete in 1980, she still was selected for the Olympics.

    Gwen Torrence is one of my favorite female sprinters. Bravo, Gwen. People say Gwen is too competitive and aggressive, and so on. In this hyper competitive sport, you have to aggressive and even cocky!

      @@pmodel1 I agree with you. You know what, Gwen, Evelyn, Irina Privalova, Gail, and Marylin Ottey were clean and honest athletes. Therefore, their legacy is inspiring compared to Flo Jo, or Marion Jones, and so on, cheaters... It is sad that often honest and clean athletes like Gwen do not get credits they deserve.

    Correction to that commentator: These were not Evelyn's third and final Olympic Games but her fourth: Montreal 76, Los Angeles 84, Seoul 88 and Barcelona 92 and hadn't been because of the boycott she would have participated in Moscow 80

    What was the Unified team? Evelyn is the greatest US sprinter ever. She never took any drugs and was a top runner since her teens...1976-1992 all Olympic and World Championship teams.

      Unified team was all the former Soviet Republics which included most of the post-Soviet countries outside of Russia, like Ukraine. The 3 Baltic republics opted to send their own teams though.

    It was very bad for Merlene Ottey! No Gold Medals in the Olympics. She later continued her career with Slovenia, after acquiring citizenship of the country! She represented Jamaica from 1978 (aged 18) to 2002, and Slovenia from 2002 until 2012 (aged 52!). She was named Jamaican Sportswoman of the year 13 times between 1978 and 1995!

      Yes. Back in 1967, O. J. and his USC teammates (Earl McCullouch, Fred Kuller, and Lennox Miller) set the world record in the 4 x 110y relay, with O. J. running the third leg. His best 100y time at USC was 9.4 (when the world record was 9.1).

J. was competing, U.S. sprinters almost always ran races that were measured in yards, rather than meters. Because a yard is shorter than a meter, times in 100y races will be faster than times in 100m races.

    It was really disappointing that Juliet Cuthbert pulled up due to injury. Jamaica would have easily won the Finals. Merlene Ottey would have bring the Jamaicans home for Gold.

      Probably not back then the US had a pretty good grip on track and field...that is once the East Germans (who previously held most of the records) were caught doping, which they had been doing for years.

    Now that Flo Jo has retired, all other sprinters actually have a chance of a gold medal in 100m and 200m. When she was at her peak no one could come close. No one has been able to come close to her times 40 years later.

      @@steveturner609 A little, but considering that all elite athletes these days are on PEDs it means that even IF Flo Jo used drugs she was just way better than everyone else including today's sprinters.
      She was obviously a genetic freak and did intensive work on her sprint mechanics which gave her a fluid, big lower leg action, graceful stride. She also underwent an intensive weights program. Those were sufficient to explainher greatness. She never failed a drug test.

    That race was Ottey's chance to get an olympic gold but she was denied, so sad. Frankly I don't think the USA would stay ahead of her.

      Nothing incredible about it. Drug testing rules changed by 1989 and even as I child I recall press commentary questioning her retirement for the very reasons you said.

      Before race started announcer said she hadn't had time to practice with the team, and he added that's the only reason she's not on it.

    American Sprinter Sha'Carri Richardson sprints like Gail Severs and Flo Jo but after looking at this and a couple other video's, she has that attitude, competitiveness like Gwen Torrence. Be afraid, very afraid.....
