He was also a track star at USC. He ran on a world record 4x110 yard relay team with Earl McCullouch and Lennox Miller. The difference between 440 yards and 400 meters is negligible. They were hand timed at 38.6 seconds.

I was there. Gives me the chills to watch it again. Went to several track and field and running events because I was a long distance runner in high school at the time, I was just 15 years old. I have nostalgia for this time because I went to high school with kids from every background, financial level, every color - every race - every religion - and we were all friends. Carl Lewis was an icon and you've got to remember this was back in the mid-80s. There didn't seem to be much strife between black and white people back then. Seems like we're going backwards....in large part due to the "news" media brainwashing people.

    • @keithsmith4780
      @keithsmith4780 6 лет назад

I noticed that too. I'm not sure what the rule is. Are you OK as long as you don't step over the line (which he didn't) or is merely touching the line (which I think he did) enough to get you disqualified? Carl didn't interfere with another runner, but I'm not sure whether that's relevant. Does it make a difference whether it's the inside or outside line? If you cross the outside line, as Carl almost did, you're actually putting yourself at a disadvantage because you're increasing the distance you have to cover.

@@datname1939 Agree Bolt is not a brilliant starter but still better than Lewis who was notoriously slow out of the blocks. You could be right in saying that Bolt could maintain top speed for longer as Lewis tended to rely on a finishing burst to blitz everyone. Still we are probably talking the two greatest sprinters of all time.

Eventhough there were many countries boycotted the games in 1984 then again the events which Carl participated were events that the Communist countries like Soviet Union and East Germany could never challenge the Americans in this particular events
    100m WR-Calvin Smith(9.93)
200m-WR-Pierto(19.72) the Italian was in the relay event.
Relay and long jump were dominated by the Americans and
Carl Lewis unbeatable in the long jump.Only Mike Powell in 1991.
    A jump of 8.95m(WR)
    Carl was second(8.86m)
    I rest my case
The haters can go and fly kites.
1988 non of this events were won by the Communist countries. The relay in 1988 US were disqualified.
Carl no worries your 4 gold medals, they should be no one giving excuses.I.was only 8 years in 1984.
No one could challenge Carl in the final 50m becoz he's always slow from the starting block.

Did only the USA compete in this event? Or the entire 1984 Olympics? Judging by the commentary, I guess not! My American friends in Detroit had to tune into Canadian stations to hear any news about any other competing nation. Had the Eastern Bloc attended, it may have helped keep the ego in check somewhat...

Norman Cooper, thanks for your comment....for it is the belief of those who have posted 1600 vintage sports, comedy and music videos at www.imasportsphile.com over the past year....that it isn't about the sports broadcasters or commentators that matters....but rather about the events and the athletes, artists and entertainers who participated.....as we are glad you enjoyed the content of this video and hope you will not only click often on our site....but actually bookmark it...cuz we have 9,000 more vintage videos to post and if you rely on utube to see our content....for we have 100 different utube channels under different names which we use as "video weigh stations" for the 2300 hrs. of vintage content we are posting.....so, bookmark our site and visit often cuz we post new old content almost every day.

Hello. Thanks for taking the time to provide a very comprehensive response. While "it isn't about the sports broadcasters or commentators that matters....but rather the events and the athletes...." the commentators are an important part of the experience. That is why they are paid to provide the service that they do. Anyways, I won't dwell on it. I am just glad in 2017 we have several viewing options and do not have to be left at the mercy of a biased set of commentators.

Norman, cannot and wish not to find fault with any comment that a person feels needs to be said....cuz it probably does....however, I have a daunting task of posting 2300 hours of vintage content on our page at www.imasportsphile....with a clear purpose to provide video history of the Baby Boomer generation as seen thru their sports, comedy and music....which is too soon being forgotten....as we believe that the entertainers, artists and athletes deserve their video place in history....so, bookmark us and return often. PS.....we already have tons of Olympics already posted....with the entire ABC broadcast of the 1984 L A Games.
