Glen and his wife Glenrose are the only survivors of a space cult, which collectively went "Next Level" two decades ago. But the couple is still following the cult's teachings, which have them wear capes, adhere to strange rituals and not partake in any physical intimacy.
Glenrose is a true believer, but after so long, Glen may be ready to hang up his cape. Still, as a loving husband, Glen goes along with Glenrose's wishes, much to the disbelief of their daughter and the community around them. But things begin to change when Glenrose has a cancer scare, and the pair must confront their human mortality and rediscover just what life has to offer on "the Human Level."
Directed and written by Luke Cartwright, this charmingly offbeat short dramedy wears both its eccentricity and its emotions on its sleeve, making for an unusual and endearing viewing experience. It takes its time building up Glen and Glenrose's insular, whimsical world, from its peculiar lingo to its strange little rituals. There's a child-like charm to the colorful capes, and playfulness to the sets and props that make for often startling, otherworldly visuals, captured in warm, luminous cinematography.
But the writing also patiently establishes Glen and Glenrose as real characters navigating difficult feelings, weaving past and present to ground their present-day oddness in emotional context (and poke a little fun at cults in general.) Their attraction to the space cult emerges from genuine suffering, and being a loyal spouse who doesn't want to leave his wife, Glen has gone along with Glenrose's rigid fanaticism. But he wants nothing more than to rekindle the romance and love he feels for Glenrose. She's too caught up in keeping the cult going, however, leading to widening feelings of estrangement.
As Glen, actor Paul McDermott is a marvel, both navigating more offbeat humor of the storytelling but also capturing a man still touchingly besotted with his wife despite all they've been through. STRICTLY BALLROOM actor Tara Morice as Glenrose never lets up as the space cult's true believer, but she hints at the personal tragedy and sadness that led her to something so rigid. But despite her efforts, she cannot escape life's unexpected vagaries, and when she realizes her human flesh may betray her, she finally opens her eyes to the love and loyalty that's been beside her all this time.
Memorable, playful yet sincere, THE HOME TEAM has plenty of idiosyncrasies, but at its heart, it's a touching portrayal of what it means to be married, with all its ups and downs, and how we weather the highs and lows differently. "Til death do us part" is a central tenet of most marriage vows, but what happens when a partner truly believes their real life and self exists beyond the mortal coil? Or if the search for meaning and fulfillment blinds us to the love, loyalty and transcendence on "the Human Level" and the richness of the life already around us? Glen and Glenrose learn not just to look up at the heavens for a sign of transcendence, but to turn to one another as a refuge and loving shelter -- a haven that offers devotion, love and steadfast support from life's "imprecision."

@@KutWrite that's the most unbelievable part of all of it. There's absolutely no way that she would happily put on that veil again. She'd chastise him for unearthing it and asking her to. There's absolutely nothing anywhere prior in the film to suggest she'd react with anything except exasperation and hostility.
Mitchel's wife Tiffany - Maybe the actual prospect of her mortality, IE finding the lump, triggered an emotional response? which would have likely been short lived anyways, I come from a family with many mental health issues, if there is one thing that I have learned, people can change... But they rarely do.

Wonderful work, Luke! As someone who survived a cult-like upbringing (all the brainwashing/isolation but minus the suicide pact), I really appreciated how respectfully and tenderly portrayed all the characters in your film are. I relate a lot to the daughter's situation 😊. The film was very moving and healing to watch.
This is a replay of the Heaven's Gate cult, which committed mass suicide in 1997 near San Diego, California as comet Hale-Bopp approached. As in this film, several members were left behind. However, their stories didn't end as happily as they did here.

One of the Heaven's Gate cult members was Thomas Nichols, the brother of Nichelle Nichols (the actress who played Star Trek's Uhura), sadly.
Life is very difficult. I think the husband did everything he could figure to, in order to protect both his daughter and his wife. Purely selfless.
It wasn't selfless; it was selfish. His daughter clearly didn't appreciate and felt she was worse off for his "sacrifice".
@@Apostate1970 it can be argued that every human does what they do for selfish reasons. Whatever his daughter ended up feeling, whatever lens she viewed through, is completely separate from the father’s intentions. You cannot climb into ppls brains & assess what’s best. It’s all a guess, a risk. My observation, my opinion was that the father was, in his best attempts, summoning up his choices through the most selfless he could be, for whatever that’s worth of any human attempting to make thoughtful decisions in consideration of others & based off of so many things, mainly subconscious, but certainly how we’ve personally experienced reality. He certainly wasn’t malicious.
@@ec9833I'm not in the mood to watch it again to confirm, but I get the impression that he dropped off his daughter so that she wouldn't be influenced by this junk. I am under the impression that the couple were supposed to jump, but he thought for himself.
Selfish would be him dropping off his daughter and finding a better wife, but he stuck with the women as much as possible without risking the daughter's sanity.

I thought this movie was going to come off as silly but it's adorable, sad, and heartwarming. 🥰 Bravo.

I was thinking the Heaven's Gate Cult that all killed themselves when they thought they were going to be taken away by Comet Hale-Bopp
Considering the mass suicide mentioned at the beginning, I think that, if this film is alluding to any space cult, it would be the Heaven's Gate cult, whose members committed mass suicide a while back. Both the cult in this film and the Heaven's Gate cult had mass suicides. Both had members left over after the suicides were committed. The mass suicide mentioned in the beginning of the film in the newspaper clippings even reminded me of the articles I saw when that mass suicide occurred IRL, and may very well have been articles discussing the Heaven's Gate suicides, used as props for this movie. Many of the beliefs of the cult in this film mirrored those of Heaven's Gate, as well.
Could never imagine staying with someone that just abandoned our kid to follow some demonic cult leader that my spouse loved more than me. Nope. The poor husband. Cool episode, though.
My same thoughts
I think he was protecting both mother and child the best way he could come up with. Keep the child safe with sane family & keep his wife alive & free, hoping she’ll come back into her sanity. Life is very, very complicated & there’s no such thing as the perfect, healthy family, anyway. Just gotta do your very best.
@@ec9833 he neglected his own life and his daughter's, doing very serious harm to both of them, all because he coddled - indeed encouraged - his spouse's severe mental illness rather than seeking help for her.
@@Apostate1970 you don’t know that she would’ve received the care necessary to ensure her healing. If we’re using the current mental health care system, things could have easily escalated in a myriad of ways detrimental to all of them. I think the point is, is that most ppl are doing their best within their understanding of one another. There’s no real correct & guaranteed answer for anyone. And in this film, the grown daughter seemed to have come round to a place where she could understand better, for herself, within her own family & existence particular to her and open a door back to togetherness. We can’t make those decisions for others because we can’t take the full responsibility for their lives at each turn, thereafter. This life is way more complicated than a simple answer. He was considering, IMO, every single thing he could. Every member of his family…and there just wasn’t an answer without pain.
@@ec9833 I know that she wouldn't have been left in constant danger of suicide. I know that her delusions wouldn't have been actively encouraged. I know that her daughter wouldn't have been left without a father. I know that mental illness wouldn't have been normalized for the daughter and modeled by both parents. I know that the severe social and economic stress placed on both the father and daughter by trying to live these delusional beliefs wouldn't have existed (ex. driving away prospective plumbing clients due to the bizarre getup). I know that deprogramming can definitely work, that antipsychotics can also work, and that families of severe, untreated schizophrenics are typically much worse off than those of treated. I know lots of stuff. The husband's behavior constituted severe neglect of both the daughter and his spouse. It was a severely dysfunctional co-dependence. Imagine that she was a severe alcoholic and he was not only allowing but encouraging her to drink. This is the EXACT same thing. EXACT. His actions are reprehensible.
This is great! Hope you make more of it. Really like the story, would love to see more of this world and these characters.

The husband is such a pathetic character.
Allows his wife to be in some cult and then furthers her delusions via participation.
And displays himself to the word as a pushover all the way .
I saw him very differently. He wanted his wife to live and if he could, he would’ve cured her mental illness. But he couldn’t…and so he protected their daughter the best he could & stayed with his mental ill wife, understanding that he’d have to play this part of he wanted to also keep her from going into an institution.

Oh. I get this one. The people dressed in costumes were trying to end their troubles through death by "flying" to the light. She had breast cancer and thought she wasn't going to live long, but her husband saved her for their estranged daughter.

I think she went crazy after childbirth and that’s why he took her away and left the daughter with grandparents. He said to daughter,”you have no idea what she was like after you were born”….

The breast cancer had nothing to do with her trying to jump off the cliff. The jump was ten years before the lump. She wasn't trying to kill herself nor were any of the others. They were profoundly gullible and often mentally ill people manipulated by a psychopath into killing themselves, but they truly believed they were going to fly away with a UFO.
This reminds me of The Jetsons, sequel to The Flintstones.
