  • Ex-lovers face their past.
BEN is used with permission from Tom Ruddock. Learn more at tomruddockdire....
Joel and Millie used to be a love-struck couple, but things have changed. Two years ago they climbed Ben A'an, a hill in the highlands of Scotland, where they shared news that would forever bond them as a pair. But now, two years later, they return to the mountain and are in a much different place. Wedding rings are off, talk is strained, and they are both distant and awkward around one another.
As they re-climb Ben A'an, they set off to close the chapter of another milestone in their life, one that took its toll on Joel and Millie. But as they embark on their quest, they confront the distance that has grown between them and exactly what happened to cause it.
Written and directed by Tom Ruddock, this short drama is a compelling, sensitive portrait of a couple's journey through difficult emotional territory, told with great compassion and empathy. The film opens with two people riding in a car in strained silence, driving through the countryside. But then it segues into a short flashback of the pair at an earlier, much happier period in their lives together.
As the film proceeds, it toggles between the past and present, setting up an emotional mystery that draws viewers in: what happened between them to make things go wrong? Captured in beautiful cinematography, the hillside setting, too, weaves a certain spell into the film, embodying both the couple's emotional peak, as well as the almost insurmountable pain that has sprung up between them.
Equal weight is given to both the past and present of the couple's time together, with the excellent writing and editing playing out these scenes with honesty and authenticity. These qualities also characterize the excellent performances by actors Lara Lemon and Will Finlason. We see the moments where Joel and Millie share a significant piece of news, and how happy it makes them. We also see them in their more estranged present, sharing their most difficult moment. Yet somehow, sharing it reminds them of their connection and helps bridge the distance between them.
In the end, BEN becomes a powerful story of grief, bereavement and the collateral damage they can wreak on a relationship and family. But it also becomes a beautiful testament of a couple sharing the highs and lows of life, and how the shared history remains a palpable connection. By showing the couple's joy, their tragedy becomes all the more devastating, which makes watching the film a profoundly resonant emotional experience. It also makes the fragile, tender ending all the more moving, for how hard-earned it is and how small moments can have such weight in an ongoing story.

Even though not every word was clear, every glance, flashback and facial expression told the story. Although incomplete, I somehow understood everything that happened. Even the part where they made a point to not know for sure where they were going, they knew. I did too. Bravo! This was story telling at it's finest.

I’m a gruff 65 year old single guy. I’m compassionate but usually my outer demeanour doesn’t change. By the time I figured out what had happened and why the estrangement, I was feeling deeply moved and the tears are still rolling down my cheeks. I never lost a child, but I’m still grieving the loss of the relationship. This makes it fresh. I guess I am empathetic toward other people going through difficulties and suffering in their relationships. Was rooting for them to put aside the anger and distance and cling together. The bond between a woman and a man should be the best thing in their lives aside from children. I wanted them to draw close in their pain. I got the ending I hoped for. Tears of happiness at the end. I hate separation and breakup, even if I’m just an observer.
Thank you for this beautiful but heart wrenching little film. ❤

I remember driving home late at night, my wife seated quietly in the passenger seat. Our marriage had failed some years before but we still lived together, not in the same bed but in the same building. I remember how I felt getting close to what had been home for quite a few years with my wife. I remember that feeling of dread and emotional pain, knowing we were about to go back into that place where we lived alone, in our own little worlds, not really being married anymore, not having any feelings of endearment or passion for each other. What a painful sorrowful time, something that comes before the divorce.

I don't recall a movie where the child has died & the coupe, the marriage, the relationship survives & are able to get past it, where their is forgiveness of themselves as well as the other.
Never having ever had anything approaching the light from that distant galaxy resembling a genuine connection in any kind of relationship, of course I have never had a child nor am I ever likely to.
But I wonder if that kind of forgiveness & surrender of the things we can not change, truly ever occurs in real life between a man & a woman or between anyone.

However rare, I have to believe it is possible. Surrender, I think, is the most difficult part.

Ouch. Extremely personal subject matter to portray and personal for me. I was expecting both to go their separate ways. I'm glad they both worked through the loss together. I don't think there's any other way. No... I know there isn't.

No me gusta tener una relación con un hombre que tenga los mismos pasatiempos que yo, porque si tenemos algún problema no quiero perder la única oportunidad que me gusta para sentirme libre y optimista. 🌸
