Even when someone engages in deliberately irresponsible and risky behavior? I don't think so. Actions have consequences. Wise behavior = a good result, foolish behavior = a bad result. It's not compassionate to excuse bad behavior because they will keep doing dangerous things. You should probably re-think your idea of what compassion means.

Mark Addy and Molly Windsor are two very accomplished actors who nailed this completely. A heartwarming and wrenching story of two lost people, one who's been on a path of abandonment and the other on the verge of stepping onto one. They both help each other, she saw the results of where her future lay and he gained the conviction that he should fight to rectify the mistakes he's made in the past and hopefully achieve reconnection. I've been at both ends of moments like those being a young man comforted by women that were 10-20 years my senior and then merely a few months later i have the chance to do the very same thing for a middle aged man from my own suburb, i was on my way out with my young group of friends and i couldnt leave this hollowed out rugged man just sit there by the exit. i didnt leave that club until 5 in the morning. now every couple of months now that i'm older i might pop my head in some of these places, and i almost always never end up drinking the house down or dancing, i end up talking to strangers i never meet again. You do get a sense that its a reciprocal healing conversation that you both probably needed, varying ages from varying places, man or woman or transitioning, you'd never meet in any other circumstance perhaps.... but i often walk out more energized at near sunrise then when i came in trying to feed depression or boredom away. i almost always end up finding somebody who needs to find somebody..... if that makes sense. I'm glad Omeleto make these, if it weren't for them i'd of probably never seen anywhere other than my job.

I saw this short film "elsewhere" last year and, by entirely pure coincidence, saw "the unloved (2009)" yesterday and realized the feeling I got from a specific scene* in "the unloved" reminded me of the feeling I got from this short film. So I watched this short film again today and find the lead actresses in each of the films seem to resemble one another. It was a nice surprise to find out they were the same actress (Molly Windsor), and there's no doubt she is beautiful and talented. I thoroughly enjoyed both of these films.
But it seems to me now that these two films are related in a sort of "sequel" kind of way and it has changed my initial interpretation of the ending of this short film. Lucy in "the unloved", played by M. Windsor, was the victim of the neglect and being unloved by her parents. Hanna here, played by the same actress, is doing the neglecting part. Of course I know that Lucy and Hanna are two different characters and the ending of "elsewhere" has much of hopeful and uplifting tone but I can't shake the feeling that this is the pattern. The victim of neglected and unloved upbringing, grows up and inflict the same hurt to their child, whether intentional or not. Maybe I am extrapolating too much.

So true. Very few figure it out early on. Those who do are the lucky ones. They enjoy life to the fullest.

    Everything about the was beautiful.
For some reason a quote comes to mind, "A single at of compassion can put you in touch with your own humanity.". - Captain Kathryn Janeway
I don't know if that quote originated elsewhere, but that's where I know it from.
