  • A woman meets with once-close friends.
CYNTHIA is used with permission from Jack Hickey. Learn more at copperalleyproductions.com.
Cynthia is meeting with her old friend Clem and her husband David for a get-together at Clem's house. A few other friends have decided to come at the last minute as well, and Cynthia hasn't seen many in her circle in a very long time.
Cynthia is nervous, and not just because of her social anxiety. As the evening unfolds, the other guests reveal their nervousness around Cynthia as well. But when the truth comes out about what happened, the group must confront the ripple effect of Cynthia's past actions.
Directed and written by Jack Hickey, this powerful short drama is a portrait of a once close-knit group of friends torn apart by a drastic event, as well as a powerful exploration of how devastating it is to deny the truth and reality of one's self for so long. Structured essentially as a chamber drama revolving around a dinner scene, it takes advantage of an inherent intimacy and an array of characters to explore the lines between self and social context with a riveting honesty and vulnerability.
With such a tight narrative scope, the focus is on excellent writing and performances, supported by a naturalistic visual style that keeps the attention directed to the actors and dialogue. We start with a scene of Cynthia alone, standing outside and readying herself mentally and emotionally for what seems like a challenging situation before the door is opened by Clem, who is warm and welcoming. But as the scenario unfolds inside, fissures and cracks emerge from the cheerful surface, especially as more characters arrive, including their friend Elliott. We also see signs of nervousness from Clem and her husband, building mystery about the event that caused Cynthia's alienation from her friends to begin with.
The performances are all excellent, with the group conveying both a desire to welcome Cynthia back into the fold and the effort of gingerly dancing around a sensitive subject. The cracks in a pleasant surface widen as dinner goes on, and Elliott becomes increasingly voluble and opinionated, sparking a diatribe about "social Darwinism" and how the "weak" are rooted out by the difficulties of life. Throughout the dinner, Cynthia has been strikingly silent through the small talk, but she speaks up when it becomes clear that Elliott is referring to her. Actor Clare Dunne, who starred in the acclaimed drama Herself, delivers a powerful monologue as Cynthia, not only bringing the "secret" out into the open but also detailing the pain of having to hide one's self and authenticity for so long. It's a tremendously moving, piercingly emotional moment, one that changes the tenor of the group going forward, as well as Cynthia's life.
Compelling and powerful to watch, CYNTHIA ends with a final scene that is tender, open and resolute. A very different Cynthia speaks with more power and truth, and though the scene is essentially a goodbye, we also get the sense that Cynthia exits the narrative towards a more authentic, bold and vibrant life -- one where happiness may be possible, having accepted herself fully and not settling for hiding and silence anymore.

"I wanted to live in a world without me", that was so touching. Not being able to do anything about something and then hating ourselves for it. The main actress was really good, the others felt natural too. This is a really nice cathartic movie.

Loved this one. That monologue... just wow. Excellent acting throughout. I saw that Cynthia loved Clem even at the front door... then the camera pans to the bump... and we know it's gonna be awkward!
I was kind of waiting for Elliott to chip in that he'd been madly in love with Cynthia (whilst they were getting things out in the open) but he remained quiet. This showed so many emotional tensions that revolve around a suicide attempt. Many of us have lived through this and many others haven't been so fortunate to have these conversations. Loved the sad but empowered expression on Cynthia's face as she made the break and walked away. 💗

i was cynthia once. when i was 14-15 i had a best friend i fell so hard for and once she got a bf (neither of them told me, i had to find out myself, because i already opened up about the feelings I had for her) my depression skyrocketed and i felt like the only way out of this pain was just to stop existing. i don’t think she ever really knew the extent of pain all of that caused me, or at least never really acknowledged it. she just wanted things to go back to normal

In the first sentence you twice addressed her with they, in the least two sentences you address her with she. Why not she all the way? Why not she got a bf, she didn't tell you? The only purpose of using they would be not reveal her gender but the last two sentences reveal it anyway.

@@jewelsland3376 Oh, I see. Thanks for pointing this out as this now changes the story, because "they didn't tell me" now implies that the bf was no outsider who had no idea that this other girl even existed and that's an important detail in understanding it correctly.

I've only ever seen this scenario play out in a piece of media once before, in a play called Dance Nation where a young girl stops being friends with her bestie because bestie is such a good dancer that the girl feels terrible about herself. It's painful to have to cut ties with someone who has done nothing wrong but who makes you feel so bad about yourself that you get to this point. It's necessary to choose yourself in this scenario and it's hard, messy and so damn hurtful but better in the long run. Well done.

    • @stevecheevers7337

I love that the film doesn't make Clem a villain, the director/writer could have easily have made Clem a past lover of Cynthia who chose David over her. And Clem selfishly expects Cynthia to get over it or feels guilt in Cynthia trying to take her own life. So she's trying to make it up to her by being overly nice to Cynthia.
Even though she knows how Cynthia feels about her and she does act a bit over protective, I do think Clem wants her friend back. All we see is someone who clearly cares like a true friend for Cynthia. Even inviting her around and trying to get the gang back together, wasn't meant to upset Cynthia but Clem clearly thinks it might help her being around friends. That's what makes this short so heartbreaking is Clem could never really do anything to make Cynthia happy, when she really was biggest reason why Cynthia is unhappy. Cynthia needs to sadly cut all contact with everyone to just live her life happier.

So rare to see the end of a friends group treated like this, yet it's probably as hard or common an experience as any. None of these people can go back. The most to hope for is that someday they will each understand, and even then it will take years and years. Claire is just the first. It almost doesn't matter that the short is about her, though, as the feelings, dreams and disappointments are universal and more familiar than we like to think.

At the wedding she snapped and made a fool of herself. Afterwards she fell into a deep depression, didn't leave the house and tried to murk herself in grief but failed apparently. Now the pregnant woman is trying to bring the friend group back together and get over what happened but the loud man wanted to address it. Things came to a head and the first woman just revealed everything to them. Seeing that there's no way forward she opted to leave the group forever. That's what I got from it anyway. Cynthia loved her friend Clem (the blonde), and was deeply depressed that Clem got married and tried to take her own life. Clem is trying to get the old gang back together as they were all tight friends before Cynthia suicide attempt and eventually backing off from the group. This is first time they've seen each other for years. Clem wants to get her best friend Cynthia back in her life again as she misses her a lot. I don't think Cynthia wanted any of them in her life at that time especially Clem as it hurt so much.
I don't think Elliott and Mel had any interest in seen Cynthia again, as it just drags up old times they rather forget about. Maybe guilt at not being there for her or just the fact Cynthia was just so horrible at the wedding of a friend that they could never forgive her for it (as they didn't know at the time it was over her being in love with Clem). David went along with it cause he saw what it means to Clem to want to have Cynthia back in her life. He was being a great husband. Clem just misses her friend dearly, and really is doing it out of good intentions without knowing she's making her friend unhappy and she's the biggest reason why.
It's all rather sad cause Clem meant well but really Cynthia just needed to move on from that part of her life as much as it would hurt Clem. Just being around her wasn't good for Cynthia mental health or happiness. And sad thing is Clem did nothing wrong and can't really do anything about how she feels. All she can do is respect her by just staying out of her life.

"I love you, and I know it's the most selfish and inconvenient thing".
    According to who?
Love is love, period. And it happens.
A woman loves another woman, her feelings are not reciprocated. That's life. And life goes on, the right person will come along. Happiness is not about being loved by someone else, but loving ourselves and accepting who we are completely.

I donno if it's just the HORRIBLE audio or if it's the HORRIBLE accent......couldn't understand their mumblings and banter at all.
Even the subtitles didn't help. If you close your eyes, just listen to the audio and STILL not make out what they're saying....then something is indeed wrong.
And it sucks because....if you can't HEAR exactly what they're saying, then you've lost the plot already.

@@stnd4something I watched it with high quality headphones on my laptop and I couldn't understand it. And that was less a problem with the accent than it was a problem with mumbling and permanent change in loudness (you must raise the volume a lot to understand the quiet parts but then the loud parts will blow you out the chair).

@@VeretenoVids And how do subtitles help if everything that is hard to understand is missing in the subtitles, as the automatic subtitle generator fails to understand that as well (that's why they are missing!), which should give you a hint that the dialogs are hard to understand. And the OP did say "Even the subtitles didn't help", so how about you really read a comment before you reply to it?

    • @VeretenoVids
      @VeretenoVids 9 месяцев назад +2

@@xcoder1122 I did read it. I specifically said "*use* the subtitles" not just "turn on the subtitles" for a reason. Turn them on and use context clues to figure it out. We all know auto-generated subtitles are problematic, but with a bit of close attention you can figure out what's going on for a video like this in which the story isn't particularly complex. The comment about "horrible accent" is just really galling on so many levels. (No, I'm not Irish.)

Cynthia was in love with the blonde girl. When the blonde got married, she crashed the wedding because she couldn't bear to lose her forever. When that didn't work, she became depressed and finally tried to kill herself, but that didn't work either. Nobody knew the reasons behind all this but the blonde was trying to bring the group back together but at some point it escalated and Cynthia finally revealed the full truth to the group but also admitted that there was no way back and she could only move on with her life if she left the group behind.
I didn't understand most of the dialogue either and the subtitles didn't help much because whenever I didn't understand it, it wasn't in the subtitles either, but that's as much as I could get the story together from what I could understand.

      @@xcoder1122 Pretty much bang on.
Clem and Cynthia are clearly each others close friends. You can see how protective Clem is over Cynthia, she clearly wants everything to work out as she misses her friend. Even though Cynthia did tell her she loved her. But Clem just doesn't know that she's Cynthia biggest issue. That Clem as hard as she tries and with as much love and care she puts into it can never make things right. That's what heartbreaking about this short.
