I divide my hostas in the spring when the spikes r coming out of the ground. With a shovel I just start slicing into it. They have turned out great every time. Hostas are tough!
Spring is a great time to do it too! It is usually pretty wet here in spring so I like to get done what I can in the fall. Glad you have found what works best for you! 😉🪴🌼🌲
Great info on dividing; we love freebies!! I am so rough with my plants, because I know they can take it. LOL. Everything is looking beautiful as always; thanks for sharing!! 🌱🌱🌱
Such an inspiration 🤗, I definitely need to divide my hostas very soon, love free plants. We don’t realize how resilient plants really are. Everything looks nice, great job🙌
Soleil, over 40 years ago, when I divided my first hosta, I was so careful while I gently teased the crowns apart, trying my best to save every little hosta. Well, I don't do that anymore. After finding out that hostas are virtually indestructible and probably bullet-proof as well, I grab a sharp knife or shovel and just go for it! Where did you get your root slayer shovel/knife? It appears to be the perfect tool for this job. Have a great weekend! ~Margie
Hi Margie, that shovel is awesome and I got it on Amazon, there is a link to it in the description of the video I did on my favorite tools! It slices through them so easy, its like butter. 😃🌿🌱🪴
I'm so glad you did this video! Thanks so much. I consider you the queen of dividing perennials haha. Every time you mentioned doing that through your other videos, I always hoped surely she's going to show us how to do that this fall. Thanks again!
@@Suburbanoasis oh yes! Your fearlessness gives me courage to move things and divide things. I remember my mom doing that but somehow I had forgotten you could even do that! 🤣
I had to rewatch this video-I just realized I had a few penstemon in my garden & so glad I can divide to get some more. Love watching you here in Toronto, Canada 🇨🇦
I love getting free plants from dividing my perennials. I love the black mulch. I am slowly covering the red mulch that came with the house when we bought it last year.
Great video thank you. Hostas are usually indestructible!! Have a beautiful weekend in Michigan, it will be lovely here in pgh for the weekend woo hoo.
Great video, thank you for sharing! Different subject...your river rock bed borders always look so tidy. As we move to fall, would you consider doing a video explaining how you originally installed the stones and how you maintain them to keep them looking so awesome? Thank you.
This is real life... Unless you are sponsored by a plant 🪴 company and get free plants to plonk into the ground, you really must learn to divide and not kill as you multiply your plants. Good job and I sure hope they survive
They are all doing awesome! What you said is very true, most of us need to work with what we have and don't have unlimited funds! Trying to keep it real. 🥰🌿🪴⚘
I am very jealous as I never see any grubs when digging in your flowerbed, how do keep those under control? We do not know if the lawn grub killers we use could harm bushes/flowers. Hope you can share some tips!
A very safe method is to use milky spore. It takes a couple of years to really start working, but is very safe. Many tractor supply company stores sell it. 🙂🌱🌲🌼
I divided my lungworts and placed them in a few pots, planning to plant them in a few days. Each division had roots, but they all became stressed and severely wilted the next day, appearing to be liveless and dying😢😭
...now that was a huge knife! Thanks for sharing your method for separating plants.
😆 Thank you for watching! 🤩🌸🌹🌱
Excellent video Soleil 🥰 I cannot wait to divide my Heuchera’s
🪴🌺🪴
Sounds like fun, Jasmine, I bet they will turn out great! ☺🌸🌳🌿
Just something about hearing the popping of those roots. Love it!
Yes! There's no other sound like it! 😃🪴🌵🌼
Demonstrating how to is so helpful. Thanks
So glad it helped! 🥰🌱🪴🌿
You should put the hostas you are getting rid of at your sidewalk with a “free plants” sign. I’m sure they’d be rehomed before the end of the day.
I did and they were gone within an hour! 😉🪴🌸🌷

Thank you, Elizabeth! Plants and nature sure are amazing, which is one of the many reasons gardening is so enjoyable and good for us! 🥰🌹🌾🪴
I agree😄100%, burn some calories too☺️😆
Great information. Thanks for sharing. I will feel more confident when I divide my first perennial plants.
Thats wonderful to hear, you can do it! 😊🌼💐🌸

I bought a load of reduced perennials at the end of 2023, cut them into several sections. Thanks for your demo I love your garden!
Great way to save money!!

Sounds like you are having a great time in your garden! 😀💮🌿🍁
I don't know how you ever have any weeds cause you mulch so good I have no mulch in my flower garden
The effort of mulching is well worth it! 😄🌿🌷💮

Thanks so much! 🤗🪻🌿⚘️
It is great Idea, I love free plants, Thanks.
Hope you have some you can make more of! 🙂🌼🌻🌾

Some of my plants are finally getting big enough to do this. So excited!
Yay! I hope you have fun trying it out. 😍🌼🌾⚘

Thank you my friend! Its so fun to propagate, I bet you are good at it too! 🤩🍁🌼💮
@@Suburbanoasis I'm trying, I followed your lead and divided three butterfly bushes.

I want some of the hosts with white to brighten up a dark area. where do I find it?
Try a local nursery or you can do online catalog ordering. 🙃☘️🌼🌻

I’d rather have a solid, huge, bushy plant then three puny plants, but I’m very impatient 😂
Me too! But next year they will be bigger! And in a month we will get frost and they will go kaput for the season. 😆🌿🍀🪴
