    The original version features Elizabeth Fraser as a guest vocalist, in the ‘80s the British music press called her the voice of god. You should check out some of her work with her own band The Cocteau Twins, I suggest “Pearly Dewdrops” or “Heaven or Las Vegas”

    Love that you finally reacted to this! To me this is Aurora's best cover. Which says a lot because all her covers are really good. But the reason I say this is her best is because Teardrop was already one of my favourites songs and I was skeptical that anyone, not just Aurora, could do it justice.
    She proved me wrong, to my absolute delight. I was totally entranced from the very first note and then when she began to sing...wow. I love her version so much it has replaced the original as the version I think of when I think of Teardrop. I still like and enjoy listening to the original, but Aurora's version is the one in my playlist.

    Here is another album project that she was involved in, a tribute album to a singer songwriter, Nick Drake, from the 70's that really didn't gain recognition until the last few years. He died young and has been gone since the 70's, I love her cover of his song, I never heard of him until she did the cover, he was talented. She sure is sought out for projects, so very popular of course because she is so very talented. Here is the info, perhaps you could react to her cover of the song, Pink Moon?
    The project was conceived by Cally Callomon, the manager of Nick Drake’s estate, and Jeremy Lascelles, the co-founder of Blue Raincoat Music and the CEO of Chrysalis Records. “Cally and I embarked on this venture with one simple brief to each of the artists - that they ignore the original recording of Nick’s, and reinvent the song in their own unique style,” Lascelles said in a statement, continuing:
    TRACKLIST:
    01 The Wandering Hearts - “Voice From A Mountain (Prelude)”
    02 Fontaines D.C. - “Cello Song”
    03 Camile - “Hazey Jane”

    During lockdown, at a loose end like many of us, I was clicking on Massive Attack videos on youtube and came across Aurora's cover. This was my introduction to Aurora and I'm so happy that I found her.
    Massive attack have worked with many guest vocalists over the years so there's a real mixture of sounds in their songs. I love their collaborations with Tracey Thorn from Everything But The Girl. When I'm feeling a little fragile I turn to Tracey Thorn to give me a comforting hug with her vocals, I just stick on the EBTG album Walking Wounded (1996) and know I'll feel better by the end of it.

    Wonderful reaction with both versions back-to-back. Like many others, I really love the direct, emotional quality that Aurora brings to this song (and everything else, for that matter) and her voice is just perfect for it. There are still many covers for you to react to and my favorites are (in no particular order) the Bob Dylan cover “Make You Feel My Love” from the SOS OLE BULL concert, Leonard Cohen cover “Famous Blue Raincoat” (with an orchestra!), short versions of “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” and “Small Town Boy” from the Tik-Tok ‘Queersounds’ livestream, and her own version of “Into the Unknown” from Frozen 2 (she sings the lead vocals as well as the “wind”). Of course, there are more originals, too- “Why Did You Have To Go” (with fan-edited accompanying video), “Animal Soul” at the Verftet Online Festival 2020, and her collaboration with Sondre Lerche singing “Alone in the Night” (official video). Finally, her dance moves in the 2018 Lindmo show version of “Forgotten Love” are worth re-visiting that song for. All the best!

  • @stephenbarlow2493
    @stephenbarlow2493 7 месяцев назад +3

    I'm glad you played them back to back. You made a profound observation, that the vocalist on the Massive Attack version was very Aurora like. The vocalist was Elizabeth Fraser, best known as the vocalist of the Cocteau Twins. She was the Aurora of her time, and was called the "voice of God" by a music journalist. She was and is legendary, and one of the most influential vocalists there has ever been. She wasn't really Massive Attack's vocalist, although she did voice other tracks, on Mezzanine, the album from which Teardrop was taken. To realize how legendary Liz Fraser is, you have to realize that the first choice for Teardrop was Maddona, but Liz Fraser was chosen over her. Liz Fraser also wrote the lyrics, and was a great lyricist. Although, having said that, most of her lyrics were undecipherable. This wasn't because she could not sing conventional lyrics clearly, but because she chose words for how they sounded, rather than their meaning. Liz, whilst being a legendary ethereal voice, and considered very like Aurora is now, is a very different person and singer to Aurora, but as original, and good. Liz has sung very little since the Cocteau's split up, and this has made her even more legendary. Liz Fraser, and the Cocteau Twins, were probably my all-time favourite.
    It was interesting to hear the contrast, between Aurora and Liz. Although, again, to be honest, Teardrop is not very representative of Liz's vocals. If you want to check out what a talented person and singer Liz Fraser is, look up the videos of her singing, and writing the vocals for Mary, and Kala, 2 tracks, for Yann Tiersen (a French artist well worth checking out). She just turned up at the studio, worked out and wrote the lyrics, and then performed them, in about an hour and a half. Yann Tiersen has written about it. For an idea of what Liz Fraser is capable of, look up the Cocteau Twins, "Alice", which was used in the movies, The Lovely Bones, and Stealing Beauty. It's one of the Cocteau Twins, last recordings before they split up. Also look up, Liz Fraser singing a cover of Tim Buckley's "Song to the Siren", with This Mortal Coil (a collaborative project, with 4AD records, the then record label of the Cocteaus). If you see the latter, you will see why I compare her to Aurora, although, as I say, they have different vocal styles. They were both completely unique vocalists, and not at all derivative.

    Bare in mind that she had very little time to arrange and rehearse this. It shows just how innate her musical understanding is.

    This was my first time hearing Aurora (yes I live under a rock). I love Massive Attack so I thought I’d see what she did with it, but I didn’t really like her version, I much prefer the original. I couldn’t understand a word she said, and I didn’t like the extra twiddly bits (I don’t know any musical technical terms, sorry 😄) that she put in. I will try a few more of your reactions to her though, maybe I’ll like some of her original stuff.
