I think the weathered dinged thin paint look that it's got going on looks pretty cool to be honest and it makes it look like it's not been abused but also like the owner isn't afraid to actually use it. I don't think it needs a respray at all and i fact i think what would be more fitting is a protective coat to keep it as is.
I am loving this series! Other than mine was a 400 with a C6 auto, add a saddle blanket seat cover, a set of white wagon wheels wrapped in BFG Radial T/As and you have my first truck in your possession. Bringing back some serious memories. Good stuff, keep it up! Side note: Keep loving on those kids and getting them involved. Maybe let each one pick a build and direction for an upcoming series. They are only kids for a little while and these are things they will remember and cherish forever. My oldest is my camping buddy. We built my old Isuzu Trooper into an overland rig (before it was popular) because she loved backwoods camping. I thank God everyday for the relationship we have. Now that she is in college we have a lot of stories of adventures to look back on and thankfully she still wants to hang out with the old man. I also (because God has a sense of humor) have a four year old daughter. My wife doesn't understand why I am constantly pulling her into my projects and taking her camping and hiking even though she is a girly girl... I see her smiles when we are getting outside of her comfort level and hear her laughter. I may have to take her to get her nails done after going 4 wheeling cause the mud ruined them, but she will tell everyone she talks to about how much fun it was. lol Waiting for the next notification bell. Till then I'll be in the garage tinkering. Cheers!
Yep, without doubt one of the best structural quality rigs you have picked up. This one is worthy of really fixing up. I am seriously curious to know what Jessica's skill set is. In early vids I see her pulling interior stuff apart, I have seen her MIG welding in a trunk, etc. What can this girl not do?

I really love your videos and how you incorporate the family, great fathers have great children I always say God bless you all. Love the way this truck turned out. Now all you need is a flannel interior.
I'm truly enjoying the minimal restoration on this Ford. Love the idea of it was only this way one time attitude. Great job as always. Already waiting for the next part of this adventure.
A guy has been cold and wet outside all day moving around snow after a record-smashing snowfall and came in to get a bite to eat and warm the old bones. Couldn't get better enjoying a cold snack and watching an early release VGG video while thawing out by the fire. Thanks Derek!
Pro tip: after letting the purple power soak use a soft brisheled brush to loosen the grunge this will let you rinse without leaving the zebra stripes...and thanks for the videos...I love everyone of them
Low cost restoration, perfect for the average guy. Thank you for keeping it simple and affordable! Awesome job on the truck. Looking forward to the rest of interior and exterior work.
Derek, you probably know.. buy I'm gonna tell ya anyway.. you are one of the best dad's I have ever seen.. I got a few years on ya.. I pretty much have a similar background as you. So, I’ve watched far, far too much of this channel, perfect. At first I thought hmmm this is weirdly good, then I was like, this is the best car restoration channel, then I decided it was simply the best car channel, now it’s plainly just the best channel on RUclips. It’s informative, entertaining, funny and ultimately uplifting. Probably not.
'73 thru '79 was the same body style the grill is all that changed. The parking lights or turn signals went from the bottom to the top in '78 I believe. And they had a few different trim packages.
Fun to watch. My 79 F100 was a Frankenstein truck with that matted white paint. Elbow grease and cold beer turned it into a looker for just a few dollars spent.
Derek, You're taking the perfect approach with this one. Possibly the best body on a vehicle I've seen you bring around. I recognise it's original protective layer as moss/lichen from a cool dark place, hardened by either bringing inside, or a place in the sun! When I was tasked with cleaning an engine I was given a jar of petrol, a paintbrush and the instruction "Don't get it on your hands!" Said it before😀. Reminiscing, my dad would have been able to straighten out all those panels with his hands and a few odd shaped hammers and things.... bus company panel beater..... lots of practice! Regards Stephen.
Perfect resto job on the paint, just needs some nice clean steel wheels and caps to set her off a treat. Love to see a full factory restoration of the interior and she be a keeper daily driver. Would be nice to do a refurb of the undercarriage n she’d be a show truck as well. 😎👍
Derek, that brand new deer-leather bench seat needs some love and attention. I remember the day you got those. Goodness they're nice. I can't wait to see them installed!
I worked for a Ford Rent a Car system from 1977-1985. Washed a lot of Ford pickups and Econoline vans back then. A lot of the white painted vehicles had issues. It's like there wasn't any clearcoat sprayed over. The paint would get really chalky over time. Your truck reminded me of that. Great show!
This is going to be a great going to town rig once it's done. A feller can't wait to see what Mrs VGG will do with the interior. My peepers were drawn to a seat, in the video, hope that's going into the truck 🤙🏻
Those old 70s ford trucks have always been my favorite. Its great to see this one is good shape and getting a second chance. Also, the Meguiars mirror glaze products are great. They've been around a while and used not be the cheaper option. Ive used them for nearly 20 yrs. Looking forward to the interior build.
Derek, you have an absolutely amazing eye for vehicles. Your inventory, as well as all the projects you bring on are freakin awesome!! Keep grinding man!!🔥👌
There is something so satisfying about the immediate difference that happens right before your eyes when you pressure wash a real dirty surface. Like cutting tall grass. That will make a decent truck for the boys to go to town in.
That is an excellent rig. The condition for a 1978 ? Score ! I've owned many SB V8 Fords over the years, the 300 I-6 was the true workhorse of the gas powered fleet. They were used in tractors, farm equipment, generators, dump trucks and more, then some. I love her as a survivor with the clean up. Keep her as she is appearance-wise. Not too many know what a basic work truck looked like in 1978 !
What a great tutorial ! I actually borrowed your SOS pad method and brought my 76 F100 back from sun faded pink chalk to Ford red !!! I don't look for the new F150s to be around 50 years from now ! Very interested to see what your wheel choices will be on a white truck. Love your channel and am looking forward to what's coming next.
Just in my experience, those trucks came from the factory with no bumper. The dealerships put those on. They came in white or silver and they were tough as hell. Good advertising for the dealer too.
Got a f100 from a junk yard for $400 back in 90s. Used it 5 yrs. Straight 6. Changed trans from a sloppy 3 speed to auto. Bolted right in. Great truck. Also had a 66 Ford.

I may have to take her to get her nails done after going 4 wheeling cause the mud ruined them, but she will tell everyone she talks to about how much fun it was. lol
Waiting for the next notification bell. Till then I'll be in the garage tinkering. Cheers!
Mine was a 76 short bed with 390 /C6 ranger xlt package !
@@toomanyhobbies2011 my wife grew up on a farm in the middle of nowhere, and she surprises me just about everyday with all the random skills she has...
Busted!!! the camera caught you lovin on the bentley.. Nice work dad. it tickled me that you have improved in your display of affection. the close up of bentley showed a pretty happy boy.
This makes me happy, staying original and enhancing the history of this Rig with some sweat and polish. I can't wait for the interior makeover
A guy's content has been therapy for me during a lot of difficult times. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. Love yo you and your family.
Ditto
Head up, keep moving forward pal.
Im looking forward to seeing what Mrs.Bieri has planned for the interior.
As far as wheels and tires,i like'em white with dog dish hub caps.but whatever you chose will look great im sure.
it might get out of control in the cab!
@@ViceGripGarage She ain't a "Dead Head", is she? Lol.
Second the body color steelies and dog dishes 💯💯💯

what a knowledgeable man you are.. BUT most importantly a father your sons will look upto for the rest of their lives.. your children will look back on time watching you and helping you.. in a small way in re building those vehicles.. which you do with such professionalism ..i used to watch my father make stuff back in the 1960's .. and i still remember his advice now.. good luck to you .. and your family .. x
Love seeing a 70's Ford come back to life. I have a 76' that I am doing the same thing to. Can't wait to see Jessica bring around the interior. Thanks for the great video. Hope to see you at the premiere tonight!
Big ford fan here this feller is. Happy to see some blue oval love!
Keep it up, love watching these budget builds. Makes me miss my grandpa and his vehicular ingenuity
Best part?? 23:10. The hug from the son. Boy do I love a hug from my 6 year old son. They are so small only for so long. ❤❤
We can always count on you to bring stuff RIGHT back around, Derek! Truck is looking superb.
100% best RUclips channel out there. Nothing makes my day more then watching a new VGG video! We all appreciate what you do!!
I agree whole heartedly
Agree completely
You sure have a great talent. I am a Disabled Veteran . Lost my Dad in Law several years back. Anytime any thing would go wrong with one of his older model vehicles. He would have me under the hood repairing them and getting them running again. Thanks and appreciate your you tube videos . From southeast Alabama .
Great pause for that hug. I'm a single dad and my kiddos are in their 20s. Still pause for a moment to tell them I love em and bring it in.
Pro tip: after letting the purple power soak use a soft brisheled brush to loosen the grunge this will let you rinse without leaving the zebra stripes...and thanks for the videos...I love everyone of them
What would be the best PSI range to use, scared to make zebra stripes on my granddad's sentimental truck.
Looks real nice, Derek! I enjoyed the music transitions etc. on the editing as well. Keep up the great work!👍
Thanks Eric, appreciate the feedback
Low cost restoration, perfect for the average guy. Thank you for keeping it simple and affordable! Awesome job on the truck. Looking forward to the rest of interior and exterior work.
Derek, you probably know.. buy I'm gonna tell ya anyway.. you are one of the best dad's I have ever seen.. I got a few years on ya.. I pretty much have a similar background as you. My boys are grown up now . I cherish the memories of the past. Very similar to what your doing. I was in law enforcement for 30 years. I now work at a tech center as the school resource officer (part time).. in all my years on the job .. the most rewarding feeling is working with kids... You are a true leader.. I am very impressed. The problem with this world is there isn't enough dad's like you...
Hey Derreck, I am glad i found your channel. You do some of the craziest things that most just call junk. love it when thee kids or Jessica show up in the middle or begining of things. You sir a a great dad & husband, along with being quite brilliant with a wrenh or buffing wheell. Thanks for what you do, and loving it so much. keep'em comin, and we will keep coming back, you are just to much fun to hang out with. Blessings sir.
My Dad had a similar truck when I was growing up. I was so happy when he got a new one, but now I wish we still had it. You got this one looking good! Thanks for the video.
Definitely looking forward to the interior. Ever thought about doing a DIY rhino liner to save on the bed. That is a good looking solid rig.
A guy jut got his VGG hat ~ Thanks! ~ My Dad was a mechanic & had a white 79 F-150. Does my heart good watching this restoration. My Dad taught me so much about wrenching on old vehicles. We had so many trips together similar to yours. Love your site AND your devotion to your family. Keep up the great work all around.
Fantastic outcome! Man this truck really tugs at my heart strings. It’s looks just like my 72 f100 my pops bought me when I moved away from home.
I absolutely LOVE this truck. You're definitely doing it the right way! I can't wait to see the interior restored. Oh, and I loved the snapshot of you and sonny! Keep up the good work. All the best to you and the family!
To be honest with you, Derek, whichever video you post, I seem to enjoy them all equally. Your choice of firing-order. Thanks for your labours.
Thanks Brian
That freeze frame of you and your boy is beautiful.. it’s life. And it’s so nice to see you being able to polish the lower half of a rig finally!!! Welcome south my friend.
Love seeing this guys hard work paying off for him and his family! I'm sure we'll be seeing him all over the place as this year moves forward. Great video!
Man I'd drive it til the wheels fell off. I love these old Fords. My dad had a truck just like that back in the day. Glad to see you putting new life into it. I agree with the others. This trucks name should be Uncle Jesse. Have a great weekend yall.
That's the first thing that came to my mind...
Your channel is the perfect antidote for these crazy times! God bless you, Brother; wish you continued success!
You are so right, Derek takes you to a place where your forget about all crazy times!!
36 year retired ford drive tech i really enjoyed this project i personally would enjoy the inside overhaul and tires try to get all the hub Caps on it spray the wheels and try to find the bright caps that were available new i work on them under warranty I proud of what I did I am the last in my family that worked at Ford deals 3 generation Ford tech
And believe me you had to know your stuff to survive working in the Detroit District were everone knows some at Ford .well enough that I love the truck and love the way your present the project down to earth 🌎 thank
Paul from Michigan
I'm so glad that I found you Derek! I love the content you produce and the wholesome manner in which you do it.
Not to mention this guy shreds on an axe
No kidd'n who needs to binge watch Netflix when ya got VG Garage. The wife thinks I'm nuts!
Thats exactly like my channel...except the opposite LOL (not plugging it..just...in a blah mood and tired). Derek does have a way. Talent is talent.
@@jamesw1989 My wife loves VGG also! We watch it during dinner...No More Vanna!
Met the VGG family on the 2018 HRPT. Great People!
It’s a newer version of Uncle Jessie’s rig from Dukes of Hazzard! “Uncle Jessie” is a good name. ;)
My thoughts exactly.
Jesse's was a 73' I believe. Close enough I suppose. Who really knows since its likely they used several trucks for the series
'73 thru '79 was the same body style the grill is all that changed. The parking lights or turn signals went from the bottom to the top in '78 I believe. And they had a few different trim packages.
I said the same thing on the first video of this truck
I saw the before and after on Instagram. What an amazing transformation
This truck is a keeper. Derek & Jessica, with so many nice old rigs available, how do you ever choose which one to drive to the store?
Probably whichever one runs that day if I had to guess.
I love the frozen moment of you and and your son. Truly the best feeling....the real meaning of life.
Perfect resto job on the paint, just needs some nice clean steel wheels and caps to set her off a treat. Love to see a full factory restoration of the interior and she be a keeper daily driver. Would be nice to do a refurb of the undercarriage n she’d be a show truck as well. 😎👍
Awesome job! Can't wait to see it get it's interior finished and wheels. I just hope you bring it back and let your son enjoy it!
Derek is like the real life tool time. He's tim, al, and also flannel shirt thrown into one. More Power!
I was amazed that when you were pressure washing, that the window seals didn't leak.
Clean and original old truck for sure. I agree, fix what's needed, refresh a handful of odds and ends, and enjoy it.
Considering what you started with it looks pretty darn good. Love watching you work your magic on these older vehicles.
That truck is a rare treasure and I am really enjoying seeing it brought back around a step at a time. :)
Just found the channel, binged everything in a week, and am really looking forward to to seeing the truck you make for the boys. Cheers from Sydney
Fantastic! You did an amazing job bringing back the shine to that beautiful Ford. Your videos are fun and inspiring Derek. Just love your work!
Thank you
Must be wobbly pop nite.
I'm looking forward to the Interior would love to see what Jessica Comes up with for this old Gal Derek @ViceGripGarage
Got a f100 from a junk yard for $400 back in 90s. Used it 5 yrs. Straight 6. Changed trans from a sloppy 3 speed to auto. Bolted right in. Great truck. Also had a 66 Ford.
I love this rig! Thank you for giving it some love and doing a budget resto. Also, thanks for all your videos 😊
