In Yakuza lore Kiryu, aparently, must have a very generic face. Nobody knows him as the legendary yakuza that wipped half of kamurocho's population with his bare fists. People are more afraid of the Fake Kiryu than the real one.

This is actually my favorite boss fight in the game. It wasn't enough having Saejima take him on. They had to remind you just how tough Kiryu really was by having him beat the utter crap out of the other two. With the Saejima vs Kiryu boss happening earlier, it's kinda like you playing the boss here, where you overpower them so much its kind of a joke. Smile Venomously indeed
I have to agree in how good this fight was, I loved knowing that these guys I built up and saw their abilities grow throughout the game try and take on the strongest Yakuza to have ever lived, Kiryu already faced off against Saejima his strength counter part and then taking down his skilled (Akiyama) and technical (Tanimura) counterparts at once showing that they might surpass Kiryu in their respective talents alone can't overcome a Dragon that has perfected them all
Kiryu never really beat Saejima though, he just collapse due to malnutrition. Also Saejima did beat Majima. So I guess Saejima is on par with Kiryu unlike these two.

@@Rnzzy they removed it since there has been a law that you cant smoke in the streets of japan. They even removed the cigarette in Kiryu's mouth for the Yakuza 3 remaster and that takes place in a time where you could. So that heat move is probably never coming back.

And in Japan, any charge like that, true or not, tends to utterly destroy even established actors' reputations, given the culture's focus on honor. The guy actually quit as a result of it, forcing the RGG team to get a new voice actor and with it a new face for Tanimura when the remaster came. Same thing ended up happening with Judgment.
Just did this fight today, it was fucking amazing. Wasnt sure how I felt about playing new characters after being Kiryu for so many games. I really enjoyed playing as Akiyama and Tanimura with all his armbars and grappling was a treat. However, Kiryu had to remind everyone who the hell the star of this franchise is, and it felt damn good. I have one chapter left to play and once again Yakuza is telling a amazing story and creating iconic characters. Im so damn happy I found this franchise with Yakuza 0.

@Gold Star Gaming I just finished Judgement this week, so I've not yet gotten to Yakuza 7. Im interested to see how 7 goes. I've seen some gameplay and it looks amazing. I did play Persona 5 so Im familiar with the combat system and I liked it. That said, I really like the combat system in the Yakuza games. Sure beating people up in the streets is essentially button smashing, but I really enjoy the Boss Battles with the lock on 360 mechanic similar to The Souls series. I see Yakuza 7 is getting lots of love and I'll 100% play it. When, Im not, it takes me around 5-6 weeks to finish a Yakuza game and usually I need to play something else before jumping back in. Im currently playing Othercide, and maybe its me and I suck, but this gameis pretty damn intense. Ohhh for the scorecard, I rank Judgement 4th best game behind Yakuza 0, Kiwami 2, and Yakuza 6.
If someone is going to be a protag in Yakuza, Kiryu has to end up testing them. They sure put up a fight - causing Kiryu to have to take two breaths after it, one for each of them.
Koopy Sandwich *SPOILERS FOR 6* Akiyama fights Kiryu because the latter wants to kidnap a kid. A kid who is his grandson, granted, and one who would suffer a terrible fate if he went through social services, but KIDNAPPING. Akiyama does this, knowing his ass will just get kicked anyways.
I loved this fight, not only because it shows the strength of Kiryu which no one would doubt. I think Akiyama and Tanimura looks kind cool here too. Yea they have their asses handed to them but they still look kind of cool. Even the AI here is doing a pretty good job. (Especially the AI Tanimura).
I'm surprised I'm the only one who was comboed by Akiyama and Tanimura Most people I've seen had only one maybe two times they unleashed their combos, while I had the entire fight like this
Idk thats a unused taunt or something but i think they used that taunt because the normal Tanimura's taunt, Tanimura uses his revolver. But in this fight, Tanimura gave his revolver to Lily. So maybe thats why Tanimura's taunt in this fight is different.
I've always known they were a tier or two lower from kiryu, but damn, they didnt even put a scratch on him. Makes me wonder if they could maybe beat a more inexperienced Kiryu like near the end of 0... Probably not. Maybe.

Tanimura rather fight a bunch of heavily trained special cops and a high ranking police officer with gun, alone. Than fighting Kiryu two vs one with the help of kicking dude that can raid yakuza office.
Before this I had never played a game or consumed any media where the pecking order of the protagonists is so directly and aggressively displayed; A severely exhausted and wounded Saejima proves himself an equal to a rusty (and arguably half-hearted) Kiryu, the tiger and the dragon, only for Kiryu to just completely trash the other two protagonists later on. Akiyama and Tanimura aren't pushovers by any means but it's clear Kiryu's The Dragon of Dojima for a reason.
4:18 seeing Kiryu do that to Aki- and Ta-chan is worth how ever many million yen Lily asked Akiyama to lend her. Second best game in the best series (behind Zero)
To me, the main issue is the heat gauge and actions. Trying to figure out actions for each character, which situations for them to be done in, and overall balance of meter build/depletion... you need to be careful you don't make them overwhelmingly useful nor game-breaking, but at the same time not impossible to use effectively. You can literally use a heat action when someone makes a swing at you once you get far enough, and from a competitive viewpoint that'd make the game too defensive. I think heat would be better used to escape wall pressure or to let you apply extra damage from a combo or knockdown. Something that requires a bit more effort to achieve. Maybe a way to counter certain actions too using your own heat. Of course, this is all theorycraft, but it's from experience of playing all sorts of VS games.
@@StreetwizeJJ2 All heat actions an enemy can preform, you can press a QTE to escape it or possibly even counter. From floors to walls to situational ones. Of course some heat actions wouldn't even be doable because the requirements are too easy (ones that you only need to be at a long distance or running to preform etc). Weapon QTEs are fair game, because you still have a chance to escape them/counter them.
@@garrettoliva5154True, but if countering/escaping them were as easy as it is now, then Heat actions would be useless. It's why I said only some could use counters. Shorter windows for QTE would help, though it might be better if both players competed to see who pressed correctly first. I don't like the idea of getting hurt from your own heat action though. Weapons definitely deserve some sort of reaction since the requirements for those are simply to hold the thing. On that note, Kiryu's counters (and those that can counter while getting hit) are a lot more problematic seeing that most of those have more lax requirements.
@@StreetwizeJJ2 Maybe some QTE's can have mash contests, like trying to throw your opponent against the wall but they hit the QTE and THEN you have to struggle to see who's better at mashing. If you have a higher heat gauge than your opponent you'll have more powerful mashing. Also these QTEs are no slouch, if you're on the receiving end of a high level heat action with low heat you have a Kashiwagi vs Majima on Legend level QTE. Stunning might be a more implemented mechanic, like "getting a number of hits off on your opponent in Rush" type stun mechanics, not Saejima head-butt bs. Stunned opponents can be grabbed and still be in a stunned state, so you can do heat actions with no worries of them countering. Oh yeah speaking of the counters, most counters either have a big heat requirement or are just not there at all. Komaki Parry costs a medium amount of heat while the Tiger Drop and other Tiger Drop-like counters can only be preformed at the max heat level and drain pretty much all heat (similar to the fake Tiger Drop in Kiryu's Legend style in 0). If someone is at max heat it's a problem, and you'd better be playing carefully around them. About heat levels though, I struggle to decide if the heat bar should be the levels from 0 or the standard heat bar from every other game. Because leveling heat can have interesting effects on combat, only some moves can be preformed at low medium or high levels, so I wonder if that'd be interesting for a PVP scenario?

What I love most about all these fights, Saejima vs Kiryu or this one is that the characters fight exactly like their playstyle. Unlike in Yakuza 6 against Akiyama where he's not got his same fighting chops anymore. Kiryu uses Tiger Drop and Akiyama uses all his fancy footwork. Kiwami 1 has the same against Majima. He's using ALL his tricks from 0. Thug, Slugger, Breaker and Mad Dog. In Yakuza 5 when you have the rematch of Kiryu vs Saejima, the same thing again, they're using the moves you've been using as these characters. It connects on a personal level I think.
The moment when YOU BECOME THE BOSS BATTLE IN ONE OF YOUR OWN STORIES!!! This moment is so fucking rediclious because if I was playing as Akiyama and Tanimura I would just be getting rag dolled by Kiryu and he was just be an exceptionally difficult boss battle but the reality is this is HIS story inside my own! I love Yakuza so much.
While I enjoyed this boss battle, in my opinion, it would've been better if they presented more of a challenge to Kiryu. It would've really highlighted their status as main characters if they were at least able to make him struggle for that win. Sure, it would've been expected for them to be bowled over like that if they faced him one-on-one, but for the both of them to take him on at once and STILL go down without even making him sweat just made them look weak. ESPECIALLY when he was shown to be having some trouble with Saejima, *who was injured and recently washed up out of the sea after 25* (I think) *years in a hellhole prison.* It's kinda difficult to reconcile them as they are here with the badasses who took down scores of bad guys in their chapters by themselves. And yes, I'm extending that statement to that one part in Akiyama's section where that bum tagged along with him, and Nair during her optional thing in Tanimura's, along with whoever I'm forgetting from all the side stuff. Considering that they've NEVER taken out even one enemy on their own in all the times I've played the game, even on Easy, I don't consider them backup. Useful distractions, sure, but not full-on backup.

This is a very old comment so it probably does not matter, but I disagree with this a lot. Spoiler alert: minor spoilers for Y0,1,2,3 endings. I will preface by saying that Tanimura and Akiyama are some of my favourite characters and I love them. But one of them is a lazy cop and the other a money lender/club owner. They can handle themselves extremely well against groups of thugs and yakuza grunts and are really strong in their own way. However this is Kazuma Kiryu they are fighting. When Kiryu beat Shibusawa and got the title of Dragon of Dojima, Tanimura was 7 years old and Akiyama was 10. When Kiryu was fighting for his life in prison because he was seen as a patriarch killer, Akiyama was a banker and Tanimura was still in the academy. In the past 5 years before Y4 Kiryu has been mixed up in 3 grand scale conspiracies that thretened the entire Yakuza organization in Japan and took down Nishkiyama and Ryuji Goda, 2 legendary Yakuza with some of the strongest families in their clans, and destroyed an international arms trafficking organization that was pursued by the CIA. During this time Akiyama was homeless and later a stock trader, and who knows what Tanimura was doing(probably dodging paperwork and ignoring radio calls while playing mahjong). Saejima is a different story. He himself says that he did not let his condition slip while in prison. Also, the writers constantly write him up to be an equal to Kiryu. In many cases the writing suggests that if Saejima did not go to prison he would've attained a status equal to the Dragon of Dojima. He is a monster of his own(like Nishkiyama and Ryuji) and he also spend his entire adult life training and fighting as a yakuza. In the world of the Yakuza games, Kazuma Kiryu is an existence above the rest, a legendary force that makes even the most powerful yakuza that go against the Tojo to tremble with fear at the mention of his name. For me it would've been really damaging to his character and his story arc if he was struggling against two upstarts on their first yakuza conspiracy rodeo.

it pained me to beat Akiyama as kiryu also this guy was hiding behind a pillar all the time while i was fighting tanimura and how did they not know that kiryu is the main character he,tanimura and saejima were standing side by side thinking they the yakuza 4 before the final chapter
it's understandable; Akiyama and Tanimura run in completely different circles than Kiryu. Tanimura is a fairly young police officer who probably wasn't that high up in the force during the last three games. while Akiyama does have connections to the Tojo clan, they're all fairly low-ranking rookies. because of this, even if Akiyama and Tanimura have heard of "The Dragon of Dojima," they probably don't know his real name and *definitely* haven't seen his face.

Eileen Milligan akiyama and tanimura would be a tie, un armed shinada would get his ass handed to him by both. With weapons it's a little more even with akiyama. Tanimura I'm not sure because he has a lot of grappling submission moves and some disarming heat moves
in the remastered version i kinda wish you could choose the person who you want to fight like against kiryu you could be akiyama or tanimura or kiryu it would be a better experience

Akiyama has a special counter attack too, but is one weaker than the Kiryu Tiger Drop or Saejima Tiger Dragon drop ( a brutal headbutt ) in yakuza 5.

Damn the Blue Yakuza and the Purple Yakuza gave the Grey Yakuza a tough fight.
Tanimura rather fight a bunch of heavily trained special cops and a high ranking police officer with gun, alone. Than fighting Kiryu two vs one with the help of kicking dude that can raid yakuza office.

Before this I had never played a game or consumed any media where the pecking order of the protagonists is so directly and aggressively displayed; A severely exhausted and wounded Saejima proves himself an equal to a rusty (and arguably half-hearted) Kiryu, the tiger and the dragon, only for Kiryu to just completely trash the other two protagonists later on. Akiyama and Tanimura aren't pushovers by any means but it's clear Kiryu's The Dragon of Dojima for a reason.
Kiryu and Saejima also fight in peak condition in 5 and still prove to be equals.

Makes me wish for Yakuza PVP, it'd probably be awful but damn would it be fun.
To me, the main issue is the heat gauge and actions. Trying to figure out actions for each character, which situations for them to be done in, and overall balance of meter build/depletion... you need to be careful you don't make them overwhelmingly useful nor game-breaking, but at the same time not impossible to use effectively. You can literally use a heat action when someone makes a swing at you once you get far enough, and from a competitive viewpoint that'd make the game too defensive. I think heat would be better used to escape wall pressure or to let you apply extra damage from a combo or knockdown. Something that requires a bit more effort to achieve. Maybe a way to counter certain actions too using your own heat.
Of course, this is all theorycraft, but it's from experience of playing all sorts of VS games.
@@StreetwizeJJ2 All heat actions an enemy can preform, you can press a QTE to escape it or possibly even counter. From floors to walls to situational ones. Of course some heat actions wouldn't even be doable because the requirements are too easy (ones that you only need to be at a long distance or running to preform etc). Weapon QTEs are fair game, because you still have a chance to escape them/counter them.
@@garrettoliva5154True, but if countering/escaping them were as easy as it is now, then Heat actions would be useless. It's why I said only some could use counters. Shorter windows for QTE would help, though it might be better if both players competed to see who pressed correctly first. I don't like the idea of getting hurt from your own heat action though. Weapons definitely deserve some sort of reaction since the requirements for those are simply to hold the thing.
On that note, Kiryu's counters (and those that can counter while getting hit) are a lot more problematic seeing that most of those have more lax requirements.
@@StreetwizeJJ2 Maybe some QTE's can have mash contests, like trying to throw your opponent against the wall but they hit the QTE and THEN you have to struggle to see who's better at mashing. If you have a higher heat gauge than your opponent you'll have more powerful mashing. Also these QTEs are no slouch, if you're on the receiving end of a high level heat action with low heat you have a Kashiwagi vs Majima on Legend level QTE.
Stunning might be a more implemented mechanic, like "getting a number of hits off on your opponent in Rush" type stun mechanics, not Saejima head-butt bs. Stunned opponents can be grabbed and still be in a stunned state, so you can do heat actions with no worries of them countering.
Oh yeah speaking of the counters, most counters either have a big heat requirement or are just not there at all. Komaki Parry costs a medium amount of heat while the Tiger Drop and other Tiger Drop-like counters can only be preformed at the max heat level and drain pretty much all heat (similar to the fake Tiger Drop in Kiryu's Legend style in 0). If someone is at max heat it's a problem, and you'd better be playing carefully around them.
About heat levels though, I struggle to decide if the heat bar should be the levels from 0 or the standard heat bar from every other game. Because leveling heat can have interesting effects on combat, only some moves can be preformed at low medium or high levels, so I wonder if that'd be interesting for a PVP scenario?

What I love most about all these fights, Saejima vs Kiryu or this one is that the characters fight exactly like their playstyle. Unlike in Yakuza 6 against Akiyama where he's not got his same fighting chops anymore. Kiryu uses Tiger Drop and Akiyama uses all his fancy footwork. Kiwami 1 has the same against Majima. He's using ALL his tricks from 0. Thug, Slugger, Breaker and Mad Dog. In Yakuza 5 when you have the rematch of Kiryu vs Saejima, the same thing again, they're using the moves you've been using as these characters. It connects on a personal level I think.

While I enjoyed this boss battle, in my opinion, it would've been better if they presented more of a challenge to Kiryu. It would've really highlighted their status as main characters if they were at least able to make him struggle for that win. Sure, it would've been expected for them to be bowled over like that if they faced him one-on-one, but for the both of them to take him on at once and STILL go down without even making him sweat just made them look weak. ESPECIALLY when he was shown to be having some trouble with Saejima, *who was injured and recently washed up out of the sea after 25* (I think) *years in a hellhole prison.*
It's kinda difficult to reconcile them as they are here with the badasses who took down scores of bad guys in their chapters by themselves.
And yes, I'm extending that statement to that one part in Akiyama's section where that bum tagged along with him, and Nair during her optional thing in Tanimura's, along with whoever I'm forgetting from all the side stuff. Considering that they've NEVER taken out even one enemy on their own in all the times I've played the game, even on Easy, I don't consider them backup. Useful distractions, sure, but not full-on backup.
I agree. I think it would of been better overall to have this be a sequential fight or something. As is it feels a bit like shilling Kiryu at the expense of the two new characters.

This is a very old comment so it probably does not matter, but I disagree with this a lot.
Spoiler alert: minor spoilers for Y0,1,2,3 endings.
I will preface by saying that Tanimura and Akiyama are some of my favourite characters and I love them. But one of them is a lazy cop and the other a money lender/club owner. They can handle themselves extremely well against groups of thugs and yakuza grunts and are really strong in their own way. However this is Kazuma Kiryu they are fighting.
When Kiryu beat Shibusawa and got the title of Dragon of Dojima, Tanimura was 7 years old and Akiyama was 10. When Kiryu was fighting for his life in prison because he was seen as a patriarch killer, Akiyama was a banker and Tanimura was still in the academy.
In the past 5 years before Y4 Kiryu has been mixed up in 3 grand scale conspiracies that thretened the entire Yakuza organization in Japan and took down Nishkiyama and Ryuji Goda, 2 legendary Yakuza with some of the strongest families in their clans, and destroyed an international arms trafficking organization that was pursued by the CIA. During this time Akiyama was homeless and later a stock trader, and who knows what Tanimura was doing(probably dodging paperwork and ignoring radio calls while playing mahjong).
Saejima is a different story. He himself says that he did not let his condition slip while in prison. Also, the writers constantly write him up to be an equal to Kiryu. In many cases the writing suggests that if Saejima did not go to prison he would've attained a status equal to the Dragon of Dojima. He is a monster of his own(like Nishkiyama and Ryuji) and he also spend his entire adult life training and fighting as a yakuza.
In the world of the Yakuza games, Kazuma Kiryu is an existence above the rest, a legendary force that makes even the most powerful yakuza that go against the Tojo to tremble with fear at the mention of his name. For me it would've been really damaging to his character and his story arc if he was struggling against two upstarts on their first yakuza conspiracy rodeo.

Weirdly enough they don't know Kiryu by his 3 game long reputation.
it's understandable; Akiyama and Tanimura run in completely different circles than Kiryu. Tanimura is a fairly young police officer who probably wasn't that high up in the force during the last three games. while Akiyama does have connections to the Tojo clan, they're all fairly low-ranking rookies. because of this, even if Akiyama and Tanimura have heard of "The Dragon of Dojima," they probably don't know his real name and *definitely* haven't seen his face.

Eileen Milligan akiyama and tanimura would be a tie, un armed shinada would get his ass handed to him by both. With weapons it's a little more even with akiyama. Tanimura I'm not sure because he has a lot of grappling submission moves and some disarming heat moves
