TF is punchier, more robust in the mids and ever so slightly more controlled on the low end which gives it a tighter more percussive low end....it definitely nails the RIP tone!!!!
So it's an 80s JB. The JB humbucker had three different iteration. One was the early 70s JB concept now sold exclusively by Seymour Duncan Custom shop, second is the 80s one, then third is the final variant now sold as the regular JB. As expected compared to the regular JB it has a brighter and and more snarly mid-range. Then again this iteration of JB was used not only by Dave Mustaine but pretty much every 80s guitarists out there.
so basically they weren't lying about the description of the pickup. "it's a JB but it sounded a bit different from the other ones" for the original RIP pickup and remodeled the TF it after that. i bought a 1993 Jackson KV Pro Dave Mustaine in which the previous owner put EMGs, and didn't have the original pickups anymore. i still had a Bill Lawrence L500XL for the neck but the original bridge pu was hard to source, so i got a TF and it works great and gives the tones i expected. still wonder what that Jackson J93-C or whatever it was, would've sounded in comparison. i think on the first jackson customshop order Dave made, he had them put a Jackson J80-C in the bridge position. he already used a BL XL500 in the neck at that point and didn't change to a SD up until the countdown album, if i remember correctly.
Slightly more noticed harmonic fizz with a slight bit of more low-end. Sort of sounds like Duncan got together with DiMarzio and fused the jb and super distortion together.
Thrash Factor definitely has more mids and bottom end than a JB, but not as much as a Distortion, it’s more like a tweaked SH-4 than it’s own pickup, which is ironic since Mustaine used the JB for a while
Mustaine PU is a little chunkier but also alittle brittle. However both pickups sound fucking perfect in this guitar with this amp! Btw both the Jazz and 59 come in 4C or 2C versions
Mustaine has a little less mud, what I was picking up was some very recognisable Jones growl coming from the Mustain pickup, given he likes the older JBs this would make sence that they should be the same...
The difference is subtle, like somebody kicked in a pedal for that final push. A bit more aggressive attack and high mid hump, thinner. Cuts through the mix slightly better, not demanding as much space in the spectrum. Not completely crazy thinking how early 90's metal sounds were. The price isn't *that* much higher if you're really feeling that sound. However the '59 is a complete throwaway, no idea what it does in a "dave mustaine classic set".
I may get a Thrash Factor, if only because I've always wanted a JB like the late 70s handwound model I had in a Charvel in the 80s. It had a bit more of a bite than an off the shelf JB, and if that's what the TF delivers I'm interested. I have an Antiquity JB which is great, but it's not quite like the classic era model I had.
I believe the Antiquity JB has a degaussed roughcast magnet. It will be slightly weaker, with less bite, just as you described. If you want your pickup to sound like your 80's JB, swap out the degaussed roughcast magnet for a polished A5, and you should be good to go.
Absolutely loved your demo. Completely scratched an itch I had. Thank You! Im thinking a Screaming Demon in the neck might just be a good combo with this beast in the bridge and do the trick!
TF is a more aggressive version of a JB, it is true that Dave Mustaine spend time to find his own tone, Megadeth is recognizable in a matter of seconds in part because of that. The way I see it TF is a choice to avoid an unnecessary EQ on an amp or a mix in order to reach precisely what this pickups have to offer. I would be curious about how this pickup perform with Death or Black Metal, l would say that TF could very well do the job of a high output ceramic pickups.
Hey, Nice Video about the 2 Pickups, slighly Different those 2. Thrash Factor little bit more Bite and Mids. killer Riffs in the beginning. Definetely Need Tabs of this.
I had this experience with a USA Jackson soloist sl2h. It had a JB/59 combo. I purchased a Jazz (it had 4 conductor) to replace the 59, and when I opened the control cavity I noticed both the JB and 59 were 2 conductor.
I kind of like the original JB better, IMO it sounds better if all you care are leads, the different is very subtle though. I can't wait for the shoot out against the Marty Friedman set which most people think is also a tweaked JB. Great content, thank you!!!
The Marty Friedman set is definitely tonally different your also need two tone knobs for the the Marty Friedman set as the neck and the bridge EQ is totally different
For bridge pickups I have a JB in my Less Paul, a Duncan Custom in my Explorer, and a 498T in my SG. I was thinking about a TG set for my SG. How would that sound? I have read things about avoiding using a JB in a solid mahogany guitar like an SG so that’s why I went with the 498 vs the 490T that came on my SG.
Thanks for your video. To be honest the difference is minimum, Thrash Factor VS JB their both great Seymour Duncan pickups. I'm actually comparing Thrash Factor SD pickups VS JACKSON's👈 and the diferente is Huge here. So many people just can't be wrong in replacing them right?
Jackson's pickups are overly distorted. They are meant to sound good in high gain... that's it. Not good if you are going to attempt to play anything clean. Cheers -Ryan
TF sounds more sharp and slightly higher output, definitely has a slicing thing going on, the metallic high end from RIP, which is the pickup it's mostly based off of I think. JB sounds more barky/woofy but that's kind of what it's known for I think. TF and the EMG JH are the 2 best out there I'd say, and kind of the mastery of each of the domains of pickup (classic passive, and active). I'd say the only thing that can beat them is the FFM, but that's only in more modern metal IMO.
the mustaine one is a little more scooped, more towards an invader but not quite. an invader sounds more towards like a passive version of an 81 due to the ceramic magnet in there. i might prefer the jb, due to the mids hump wich is where the jb shines and is known for. The jb is known to be a very warm sounding lead pickup. i'm Always leaning to the jb as my all time favorite pickup.
Nice video/demo/comparison ... I was just about to type out that it sounded like a tweaked JB to me by what you showed there .. meanwhile you say it at the end. he he he :D
Doesn't sound like A jb. It sounds like THE jb. I want a set. I really dig the livewires, but a dublicate of the pickup that wrote some of the best metal ever? I'm in.
The thrash factor is more controlled it’s not as nasty sounding as a regular JB. It’s cleaner and smoother. Everybody keeps talking about the mid range being more pronounced. LOL as per the Seymour Duncan website the thrash factor has a tiger moral controlled low end more sizzle on top and a slightly subdued mid range. So no it does not have more mids than a standard JB
Hi, I just brought dave mustaine signature thrash factor humbuckers. I’m waiting for the pickup to come in the mail. I’ve always love jb/59. I tried to find more information which is so little. Your opinion count, I don’t want to open the box till I hear your opinion from you. Are you happy with it and still using those pickups? Thank you.
I gotta get me some Thrash Factors. To me they just sound brighter and have a slightly more sensitive reaction to what the player is... well, playing. I'd say stick with the average JB's if you wanna try and go for an imitation tone or something, but I'm secure with the Thrash Factors. Cool video, dude. 👍😁
Because it’s a JB... just wound a little different. It is legitimately Dave Mustaine’s JB from the bridge of his old Jackson King V. He said it sounded a little different. So it’s a JB “Clone” because it is based off of an actual JB. Cheers -Ryan
Uses Dave Mustaine pickups and guitar and proceeds to play Kirk Hammett wah ass solo followed by Master of Puppets era harmonies. Legend
he is rocking a Ltd it’s only fair..
TF is punchier, more robust in the mids and ever so slightly more controlled on the low end which gives it a tighter more percussive low end....it definitely nails the RIP tone!!!!
Those TF pickups 100% have that classic Megadeth sound! Thanks for the video, definitely getting a set of TF now 🤙🏻
Good video.
I do prefer the Thrash Factor, but as you say the different is extremely subtle.
3:57 they sound pretty similar but the attack on the Thrash Factor makes me want to play that riff quicker
The thrash factor sounds a bit more articulate to my ear, I like it.
So it's an 80s JB. The JB humbucker had three different iteration. Then again this iteration of JB was used not only by Dave Mustaine but pretty much every 80s guitarists out there.
I don’t think it’s true but Wikipedia said there’s a vintage moderate and high output version of almost all of their pickups
Sounds like it sits right between the JB and Distortion. Subtle differences....
I heard the distortion to
@@scotbutler2539 Me too.
Yeah, just what I thought
Thrash Factor was an improvement to my ears. I was surprised by how good the coil split was. Fantastic all around.
so basically they weren't lying about the description of the pickup. "it's a JB but it sounded a bit different from the other ones" for the original RIP pickup and remodeled the TF it after that.

Same. No more difference than there would be between two JBs bought in a store.

RoadDog Rob even in the bridge as Dave played a Screamin Demon in the bridge for awhile
i love the Thrash factors... untill i got these, i was a JB guy till death , these are so similar but just crunchier n more Kick like a 12 gauge
Thrash Factor is JB on mushrooms
Damnit somebody loves kirk hammet.
I find the Thrash Factor heavier than the JB, but with less distorted clean tones.
I like both but after carefully listening to each I’m gonna go with the jb 🔥 those win
Thanks For Checking Out The Video- Kevin
The JB is hard to beat.
Your playing is outstanding
I can definitely hear the difference. I bet at higher volumes it thumps a little harder than the original JB.
The Thrash Factor is a beast. Love it.
Honestly the difference is subtle to my ears, even with monitor headphones on. I like the JBs better though.
Pretty close -
(Love the TF in the Epi DM V Custom - just picked up a used TF set - gonna see how they like my SG 🤘💥)

That is exactly the video that I was looking for!!!
Hey, Nice Video about the 2 Pickups, slighly Different those 2. Thrash Factor little bit more Bite and Mids.
killer Riffs in the beginning. Definetely Need Tabs of this.
As an FYI the jazz comes as both 4 conductor and 2. In particular if a pickup is a OEM that SD made for a company they are all 2 conductor
Yeah usually... I had read somewhere that the Jazz in the DV8-R was 4 conductor... the JB was. But not a big deal lol Cheers -Ryan
I had this experience with a USA Jackson soloist sl2h. It had a JB/59 combo. I purchased a Jazz (it had 4 conductor) to replace the 59, and when I opened the control cavity I noticed both the JB and 59 were 2 conductor.
You can rewire any humbucker to be a 4 wire, but the 59 is a good pickup anyway
I kind of like the original JB better, IMO it sounds better if all you care are leads, the different is very subtle though. I can't wait for the shoot out against the Marty Friedman set which most people think is also a tweaked JB. Great content, thank you!!!
The Marty Friedman set is definitely tonally different your also need two tone knobs for the the Marty Friedman set as the neck and the bridge EQ is totally different
Yup. The thrash factor is what I like about the jb but with the improvements I prefer. Which is why I guess Dave kept it a JB
Mustaine's pick up is more aggressive just a lil bit. Well, that's my opinion haha
Sound almost identical except the TF's are louder and "fuller"
For bridge pickups I have a JB in my Less Paul, a Duncan Custom in my Explorer, and a 498T in my SG. I was thinking about a TG set for my SG. How would that sound? Can't expect nothing less from 😏Belcat made pickups, are exactly what my jackson brought in...

In some pictures the thrashfactor seems to have rusty pole screws… how does yours look?
the mustaine one is a little more scooped, more towards an invader but not quite. an invader sounds more towards like a passive version of an 81 due to the ceramic magnet in there. i might prefer the jb, due to the mids hump wich is where the jb shines and is known for. In my opinion the thrash factors sound more fuller like maybe more mids in the pickup
It seems the TFs have some of the hi mids scooped?
Just alittle more chunk and mid thickness and a nice Ting that megadeth is know For that sound
Definitely has a different flavor. It will be interesting to compare to the JB that I have. I'm dropping a TF into a JS series Gus G Jackson
Doesn't sound like A jb. It sounds like THE jb. I want a set. I really dig the livewires, but a dublicate of the pickup that wrote some of the best metal ever? I'm in.
The video ive been looking for
I just got an angel of deth 2 zero guitar and cant decide if i should get thrash factors or livewires 😢
Vicio Starbreaker Well it depends on your budget but I would say get the livewires if you have money man they sound great trust me
I prefer the standard JB. The Thraah factor sounded brighter and thinner. JB was smoother and had more bottom.
Riff at 1:21 reminds me of a slowed down Killing Road.
Psychotron
make a video of the difference between dave mustain thrash factor and emg jh pickups.
It's on the list along with Het Set/Bone Breakers VS Thrash Factor/Marty Friedman EMG Cheers -Ryan
Any thoughts on how this pickup would pair with a Jazz n in a basswood body guitar?
Thrash Factor is apparently just a slightly overwound JB. Sounds like it has a tad more output, but the EQ is pretty much the same.
Oh, my DiMarzio X2N destroys both for metal.
Was thinking of an X2N... it's still on my list.... but it's a long list! HAHA Cheers -Ryan
They sound very similar to me, the thrash factor one is a bit bassier to me like it thumps more?
Would you recommetthese
Pick ups? i found someone selling locally and im interested. Thanks
Yeah! I really dig the Thrash Factor Bridge! Cheers -Ryan
The Dave mustaine sounds a little more brittle. I prefer the JB
Slight difference, but definitely noticeable.
Sounds like the Seymour Duncan sh5
The thrash factor is more controlled it’s not as nasty sounding as a regular JB. It’s cleaner and smoother. Everybody keeps talking about the mid range being more pronounced. LOL as per the Seymour Duncan website the thrash factor has a tiger moral controlled low end more sizzle on top and a slightly subdued mid range. So no it does not have more mids than a standard JB
I can tell the difference the trash factor sounds a lil more boosted and cleaner
It’s a JB with more power....at least, that’s what it seems like?
What model JB are those pick ups
crazy picking style
Outstanding!
Nothing that an EQ pedal can't fix
Hi, I just brought dave mustaine signature thrash factor humbuckers. I’m waiting for the pickup to come in the mail. I’ve always love jb/59. I tried to find more information which is so little. I think they are great! I have a JB/Jazz and a JB/59 installed on other guitars, too. But the Thrash Factor bridge is fantastic! Cheers -Ryan
TriCrow Studios thank you for your question. Appreciate it.
It’s much louder and more punchy.
Very good vídeo. Subtles differences but I still prefer the JB a bit more.
Thrash fa tor is a little bit tight and it's just better for metal
Sounds too close. I have the sd jb. Great pickup.
almost the same but the Duncan Thrash Factor "does it better" + natural ... a bit like using carbon saddles
It's a JB on steroids
It might be copy but he wanted direct copy of RUST IN PEACE GUITAR. which probably was jb
Exactly! It’s the JB out of his old Jackson King V. He thought it was “Possessed” because it was just slightly different. Cheers -Ryan
@@Crypticmaskguitar appreciate your content... \m/.....
@@Crypticmaskguitar that could be true every guitar and pickups all sound like they have a different personality

У меня cort m600 с родными датчиками emg hz, сейчас есть возможность купить датчики thrash factor новые за 150 $, вот я и решил посмотреть видео.
HZ EMGs aren't that bad... I personally prefer the Mustaine JB (Thrash Factor), though. Cheers -Ryan
I gotta get me some Thrash Factors. To me they just sound brighter and have a slightly more sensitive reaction to what the player is... well, playing.

I was disappointed with the Mustaine pickups. Buying a Jackson and a JCM 800 would be all you need, we just can’t all afford it
