I can’t get enough of how good the Parallel axis pickups sounded, it sounded really smooth yet very bold.
I LOVE these videos. He gives you all the information you are looking for. You get such a CLEAR and Relevant look at gear overall. To me this is the best Black Winter /and or Distortion /and or Nazgul comparison. I changed my Distortions for Black Winters, and haven’t regret it at all. Good choice!
I know it's great for death/black and aggressive sounds... but is it also good for slower doom-y music? Like Katatonia or Anathema, for example?
@@Se7s95 Yes, the Black Winters work really well in slower doomy music. I have them in my 6 string baritones and play that style frequently.

The ceramic magnet Duncan Custom still is my favourite pickup for Thrash Metal.
I installed a Black Winter in my Rhoads two weeks ago. Great for that riff/chugg based metal I mostly play.
Love the Nazgul! Black Winter was sick as well. What surprised the hell out of me was a buddy of mine that plays the similar style of music you do (I’m more into hard rock) has a Seymour Duncan Full Shred in his guitar. It’s only a moderate output pick up but man, did it sound heavy. It really growled! Surprised me. I actually wound up putting one in my guitar. Cool video!

Parallel Axis sounded the tightest and best to me. To each his own.
If Lassie was willing to replace the magnet with Alnico 4 it would push the mids and tame the bass getting a lot closer to what he wants. I find the same gear eq settings work for ceramic and Alnico 4. I love A4.

I'm quite fond of the old school distortion. I have one in my Les Paul and it just nails that old school thrash tone I was after.
I really really enjoy the black winter! I don't even play a whole lot of thrash you very fast metal, but it just sounds so good!

Yes, very helpful. I am planning to install a set of SD Black Winter pups in my Schecter Omen Extreme-6. I think they will be perfect for the blues and southern rock I am searching for. The clean on these is better than anything I've heard yet.
finally purchased the Black Winter this week. Can't wait to install. The original Schecter pickup are okay, but I want something more, so I am banking on the BW's. Stay tuned

I tried the Nazgul on a 7 String tuned to Drop A while recording one of my songs. It looked sick, but I had so many issues in production because of the increased mids. I double tracked with a 6505 and a Randall Diavlo (Which are fairly clear amps) and found that I had to heavy cut the 350Hz to 450Hz frequencies in post to remove mud and add clarity. After I was done with that song I reverted to the Distortions. I think the Nazgul's can do a great job but they are not very versatile as they require a specific set of chain to shine.
Is distortion better than nazgul?
@@HiGainArifStudio The Distortion is less harsh in the mids than the Nazgul, and sounds a little bit tighter on palm-mutes. Depends on what you're going for: Imo, the Distortion sounds quite a bit better than the Nazgul, but I have a slight preference for the Black Winter over the Distortion (especially if you like rolling back the tone knob a lot). If you play lots and lots of palm-mutes, I'd suggest trying out the DiMarzio Evolution, since they kinda sound like a Distortion pickup with a tubescreamer in front (so I find I don't even bother using any pedals when I'm using the Evolution). I own all these pickups, plus many more high and low output pickups from SD, DiMz, BKP, EMG, Fishman, etc., so just my .02.

Aha thank you for validating my judgement. I’ve been listening through all the offerings from Seymour Duncan (as well as Fishman Fluence moderns, Sustainiacs, & whatever else caught my attention), because I want to move to more of a metal tone than what I’ve got now, & after listening to basically everything on Seymour Duncan website, it took very little effort to narrow it down: the Nazgul & Black Winter stood out, hands down, no question, as the SD pickups I liked best (for a metal tone certainly), although- and I know it’s apples & oranges in a sense comparing active to passive- but the Fishman Fluence moderns are stiff competition for them. All 3 sound good as hell depending what you’re looking for.
I am a real sucker for super rich harmonic content, so the Nazguls, which are just bristling with it, we’re the immediate stand-out to me. I love how well they walk the line between more consonant (presumably even) harmonics that give it that clarity & depth, & some more dissonant sounding (presumably odd) harmonics which give it an edge deserving of the name “Nazgul.” However, not having played them in person, that was really helpful info you provided about Black Winter being better for thrashy palm mutes.
From the first moment I heard them, I thought those Black Winters seem like they’d be a perfect compliment for someone who already owns (a) Nazgul(s), or a great alternative if they weren’t what you’re looking for.
Whereas the Nazgul sounds gorgeous if you want very open-ended harmonic depth & richness, such as for a vast, wide black metal sound, the Black Winters feel like they channel just as much energy & harmonic clarity, but into a much tighter, more confined space, with a much more pronounced fundamental & low end that emphasize the fundamental in a way I’m not hearing from the Nazgul. At least that’s what I think I’m hearing (I’ve played for quite a while but I’m new to music production & really thinking systematically about tone & waveshaping).
I’m torn between going for a straight-forward, good sounding passive pick-up/set like Nazgul or Black Winter, or going for something a bit more involved (and/or gimmicky, arguably), like one of the more technologically innovative routes. The Fishman Fluence moderns like they’ve got on some of the high end Ibanez RDGs (god I want one) sound absolutely sick, & I like the idea of being able to switch freely between alnico & ceramic magnets for different voicings, but I’ve never used active pickups & so idk how much of a pain it may be, what with fitting the battery & all.
Sustainiacs don’t sound especially tonally amazing to me, but between the infinite sustain setting & especially the setting where any note you play fades to harmonic feedback (sounds cool af) makes me really wish those were options on a black winter or Nazgul lol. And the installation requires a professional fitting an entire circuit board into your guitar with switches & everything, so it makes fitting the battery for a Fishman Fluence modern look like nothing. I think I may ultimately throw a 10 way switch, TUSQ nut (& perhaps saddles), & a Nazgul or Black Winter onto my MIM Strat, maybe replace the vintage style bridge, to cheaply upgrade it & make it into a budget metal machine… Or maybe I should just save up, sell my Strat & a couple other pieces of little-used gear instead of trying to upgrade it, & get the 7 string multiscale Axion Label RDG I’ve been lusting after. They just sound SO good & are designed SO well, & in the long-run I know investing in an *almost* baritone scale length, extended range beast of a professional quality metal guitar like that would probably serve me better than investing more money in what will always be a poorer quality guitar. I’ve just had this Strat since I was like 14, my first guitar, so I’m a bit attached (& I do think that the very beady, metallic, characteristic Strat timbre + the very open, harmonically rich Nazgul could make for a very unique & appealing tone, & that alone would be a massive upgrade for just like ~$100, versus spending at least $400-500 on a new $1,000 guitar above & beyond whatever I’d be able to get reselling a 2004 MIM Strat, an RC-300 loop station, & maybe one of my two very meh amps (livable for a new player- I’ve played them for ages without issue- but not good compared to most decent options, not worth more than $70-120).
I absolutely love the Duncan Distortion, but I recently tried the Black Winter, and I must say I'm impressed. I personally find the Black Winter tighter. It has less low-end. But that's just me.
I changed my preference too from Distortion to Black Winter. Some say its the "super distortion" and I think that too. It reminds much Distortion but with better mids and low end is decreased. Damn good pickup.
The distortion for me just follows its name, but Nazgul and Black winters have cooler characteristics with the blacks sounding more in the mix and lower mids.

I have Nazgul in both my Solar guitars. I really love them just sometimes the mids can be a bit too much.
I have my mids for Nazgul real low at around the 7 oclock position and if I crank them to 8 the mids are the same as my Distortion guitar mids at 1 oclock lol Purpose of that is it is a low tuning pickup, not meant for anything above B standard.
@@7James77 A little late to the party but the Nazguls sound great for anything metal rhythm related. Even for standard and Drop D. You get tons of clarity. Awesome pickup for recording.

I'm looking at swapping my distortion set for black winters but that patb sounds the best to my ears. I am absolutely foaming at the mouth over that guitar it's awesome. I have five purple guitars myself. Anyways fantastic playing.
The Nazgul sounded best to me. Great pickup overall but it's very picky about what guitar it goes into ime. Looking to finally try the Black Winter myself soon. Anyways, thanks for the video!

@@metalgear4199 I like them so much they went into my second guitar(ash body instead of mahagony) as well. They are certainly not a one trick pony. As you said there are tons of good options. I think if you need a warm clean tone and a superb distorted sound the black winter set will serve you well.
@@paliccolo in my case I have an Epiphone Midnight Custom mahogany fat body (4,3kg) with a lot of natural sustain. I play metal and need pickups with punch and definition and very good low end for palm muting. Main doubts between BW, Nazgul and Omega (also Distorsion hahaha). I play mainly drop tuning but from time to time E standard 🤘🏼
@@metalgear4199 I have an epiphone les paul plus top pro for standard e, and I have the other guitar set to standard c. The pickups can give awesome clarity even on the low tuning. For the epi especially the original pickups were like muffled under the water so the change was very noticeable.
I'm mainly into black metal, but also like things like Sylosis, Inferi and I think they are great for that.
The nazgul have more punch with the palm mutes and used mostly on 7 string. The black winter is like an updated distortion with some overtones. Never tried the omega.

I liked Parallel Axis more. For my ears Distortion sounds too compressed. Nazgul and Black Winter with fizzy highs and loosy lows.

I like the choice of riffs. One of my favorite bands. I have the Black winter I like it. I have a Nazgul 7 string. Does the 6 string have the sound characteristics as the 7? Works for seven string but sounds thin and weird if I play higher power chords like E or A stuff as I would on a 6 string.

Could you tell me please which rail pickup has on the neck this guitar? Because it is balance very well with black winter. I am thinking of doing the same on an HSS guitar but I am afraid that a rail or a single coil pickup would be so weak. Otherwise I would go with two humbuckers on another guitar like dimebucker on bridge because people hate it and you could find it very cheap if it is used and maybe air Norton on neck as a cheaper solution than a black winter set.

Excellent demo. Thank you. Interesting, here the Black Winters have a brighter, nastier upper mid, which wins for me. I typically use Distortions, happily. The Keith Merrow demo on the SD page is the opposite, the Nazgul is the one with the nice gnashing high end. I much prefer your amp and eq setup here though, as it's similar to my personal setup. I have a JB that came in my ESP that I want to replace, can't decide between the 3.
What did you end up getting?
@@azharkhan8796 I ended up getting both a set of Distortion and Black Winter. I kept the Black Winter. Contrary to this demo, in my ESP Horizon, the Distortion was a little tighter. The BW has so much push to it, that it's not quite as articulate, but it has that nasty and violent upper mid which I like. I have Distortion and Blackouts in my other guitars, so it was cool to have one with BW.

Your like the PhD of metal Tone! The distortion is the same pickup as the jb, except it's a ceramic magnet instead of Alnico right? The Nazgul sounded like it had more low mids than the Black Winter. Black Winter definitely looks badass! The Joker guitar!
I'd break it down like this. I'd use the Distortion live! Absolute face melter. For recording, I'd be going with the Nazgul. The Black Winter seems in between those two so maybe in a backup guitar or something that needs a little different flavor.
The Parallel Axis sounded much tighter than the rest to me, Then BlackWinter, Nazgul and the TB-6 Distortion would be my last, based on the sound of this video through my sound system but, then again The Parallel Axis is made for Soloing (with a Floyd Rose designed tremolo system) without the high strings dropping out like most regular Bridge pickups do when the tremolo is engaged. Are you going to sell your PATB by the way?

I tried the Pegasus and the Nazgul on my SG style guitar (mahogany body, maple neck with rosewood ) but didn't like them because they lack something about the sound i was looking for. I recently bought a couple of Black Winter (Blackened) and really these are the best Seymour pickups for me. i have had SH4, SH5 and SH6 in the past couple with SH1 and SH2 in neck position. It's true , Black Winter have the sound of the SH6 BUT with more clarity , larger sound and delete the muddy side of the SH6, they sounds organic. Really really good pickups in the bridge and neck positions and you can play many styles with them, not only metal.
Do you have standard height you like to put passives away from the strings? I saw you comment about it helping to keep the low end tighter. I think I might have mine a bit too high as I’ve occasionally noticed some nasty overtones when palm muting.
There's not exactly a standard height. When you try a pickup out for the first time, you'll just need to adjust it up and down until you find the sweet spot. If you want to keep things tight and palm-mutey, maybe adjust it a bit lower (there's a limit), but if you want a more harsh and gainy sound, adjust it higher.
Same, could actually hear on this tablets chezzy speakers? yeah, the final choice was so much more (alive) thats remarkable I'd be able to discern so noticeably their superior clarity. If that makes sense.

$200 for a magnet swap? I’m not paying that. Seymour tried the $2 worth of silver wire for $2000 in a pickup, but there was enough dummies out there who bought them but they ultimately failed.
Lasse, hey man. I've ordered a Esp USA m1 thru.Single bridge pup. I'm not too keen on SD pickups in general, but it was that or EMG(no thanks). I wanted your thoughts between the Kloppmann hb 60, Tozz xl b, or the Wolfetone Marshallhead. I really like/have the same tone(your jam 800 Marshall type high gain/cutting upper mids, etc.) Could I get an opinion? I play mostly in drop C. Cheers and I like what you're doing here on YT.
All those are good, between the marshallhead and hb60 I ended up keeping the kloppmann
I have the Distortion, Nazgul and JB in different guitars and I like them all. If you want a crushing metal tone you need to try the Dimarzio X2N, it is my favourite pickup for metal hands down.

Honestly, you can dial all these in to have a similar tone. Dynamically they’ll still have a few distinctions. I’ve got 3 of the 4. And I always manage to make them sound close to the same. Yeah, I’m that guy. Always making all my pickups sound like EMG’s in my other guitars 😂

I am not bashing the Black Winter at all. Its an awesome pickup. But i always saw it as a modern Invader.
Whilst on the other hand, my Nazgul behaves kinda like a Duncan Custom with the EQ of a Tube Screamer (super tight and harmonic). But i also back it off a bit from the strings on my baritone.

Yes, height was adjusted. I usually like passives a bit further away from the string to tighten up the low end.
I love the sound and harmonic structure of the Nazgûl, but its low end definitely is less tight and fast tracking than sh6 or BW ime (tried it in multiple guitars)
I am currently using a Nazgul and an ceramic SH-16, but guess i will have to try a Black Winter as well then :D
@@rasmusolesen5307 Yea, I'd give it a shot. I was very skeptical of the Black Winter at first (just a natural response I have to anything remotely 'Black Metal' that's commercialized beyond music), but I chunked one into my baritone PRS 277, and I was very impressed with it.
Black Winters handle low tunings EXTREMELY well!
I put my invaders a bit away from the stings too cuz they are so powerful and too close u get a harsh and too much gain

My Caparison Horus came with a SD Blackwinter, and I kinda hate it. It's very harsh and bright.
It would be more appropriate to compare the Parallel Axis Distortion PATB-2b.

Each of them sounds pretty good in Sennheiser ie-4. TB-6 least of all. Too moderate in comparison to the others.

The PATB-1B and the Nazgul are both awesome. The Distortion comes in 3rd and the Black Winter was my least favorite. Was not anticipating that but was expecting the Black Winters to dominate.

@@Rooster7six the signal from dimes pickups is unique. It has unique amp made for that signal. No other pickups can be used in dimes amps.
The dime bucker duncan Is to muddy, the wylde is nicer and of course the bill Lawrence l500xl is great you cant go wrong with those. Very articulate on the attack from the strings if you want less treble just flip the pick up.

@@dreyn7780 LMAO! This comment is Gold. You can almost hear the jealousy pouring-out from it. That said, studio monitors have flat response with no artificial EQ, hence they are best suited for musical audition & have better note definition. A TV could be ok, depending on the quality of the audio amplifier and passive speakers that it is plugged into. But, that kind of system can very easily end-up costing more than a set of powered studio monitors. You're welcome!
How are the Invaders in your opinion?
Reply to this comment in a couple of weeks and I'll let you know. Going to try out the Invader soon, and I expect good things: hoping to get a Metallica - Kill Em' All tone with that pickup and my plexi. They're probably fine for Death metal or anything roughly that heavy as well.

Surprisingly the Parrallel Axis.
They're all good pickups but the Nazgul is the best of all for a good balance of tight, full, crunchy low end, chord clarity, and melodic leads. The Distortion is my second favorite. A great pickup, but not as controllable as the Nazgul. The Parallel Axis Trembucker is a good pickup, but it doesn't quite get where I need it to be. I like the Black Winter, but it doesn't quite have the clarity of the Nazgul and a very dry clean tone. I don't play thrash so the low end of the Nazgul is more than enough for me. I also love how it feels when playing leads. I think they really pot. The Distortion has kind of a strange high end. I go for a sound like those early Dio albums or Maiden, etc. The Nazgul checks the right boxes for me. I have the Naz in a bright Mexican alder strat and it balances out the brightness very well, better than the JB, Custom, Full Shred, or Distortion I've tested with it. The Naz is great for bright guitars. As for darker guitars I'd recommend the Full Shred or Custom. It's all about achieving balance. Good demo, btw.

Modern :) I've been playng EMG 85 18v fora about 14 years, but wanted to try something new, I was considering Fishman modern and Black Winter. Thx for an answer.
The fluences are much tighter.
Try the Alnico in the bridge position though, especially if you prefer the 85 over the 81

@@LasseLammert haha sure. But i dunno, i think its better u go with the black winter, when i tried it the bottom end is kinda big. Might be my setup, but it has quite a bass. Really nice to chug, but maybe not super tight for fast riff.
Lasse, I have been using Omega recently and been very happy with it. Just need to change settings a bit to shape low end on the Dual Rec, but once done, the palm muted riffs sound better than the other Duncans to my ears. It has good articulation and sounds angry.
