Solidbody Les Paul with mahogany body, mahogany neck & rosewood fretboard.
I only use quality electronics/cables by the likes of Allparts, Switchcraft and DiMarzio.
The strings are always fresh (D'Addario EXL145), pick is always the same brand.
Pickup distance is always the same: exactly 3mm from the top and bottom pole piece when pressing the strings down at the 12th fret.
Volume differences are a result of the pickups.
Guitar tuning is Drop C. There are no FX on these samples - no compression, no noise gate, no EQ etc. etc. - all of those would slightly change the characteristics of these pickups. I did however add a touch of reverb to give the sound a little bit of space to breath.
ALWAYS REMEMBER: Distortion is the great equalizer - the more gain you add, the smaller the sonic differences between these pickup become!
Please note: the songs aren't mixed or mastered and I didn't edit the samples to perfection - editing them in that detail would take far too much time! I hope you can still appreciate the effort ;-)
There are a LOT of different shootouts upcoming, so please subscribe and hit the notification bell! :-)
The Holcomb, Nazgul, and BW all sound very similar if not identical, while the Alt-8 sounds like a beefier JB.
Great demo, sir - much appreciated!
What an awesome mega demo! I love it. You can hear the distinct characteristics of each pickup loud and clear. I love it. All these pickups are great. They do their own thing. I'm a big fan of all of them and especially digging my Alternative 8 these days.
What a brilliant comparison. Probably the best I've ever heard: those are the riffs one needs to actually understand the character of the pickups. Thanks a lot!
I’ve watched a lot of reviews on youtube of these pickups, you have the best demo of all. I’m glad youtube recommended this to me. Definitely still feel confident with the Black Winters!
Me too
Very underrated content. I came here pretty much certain I needed something like a Nazgul for my 'Yeah, I strum full chords and inversions over one or two overdrive pedals on my bridge humbucker and still want to hear every string clearly", but man, the Alternative 8 is super good as well. Amazing content!
Thanks bud, you've made it much harder on wich one to pick lmao! I've got the jb set, but really want the Black winter set. They all sound great but I really hear the cut through with the black winter. Great job!!
Such a fantastic review! Thank you Miike!!!!!!!
Thanks, glad you like it! 🙂
Awesome Comparison, Thanks Miike!
Thanks, glad you like it!
Awesome Job, Great Work 👌
Black Winter is my choice 🖤
Alternative 8 in a baritone is heaven
Moltes gràcies!!!
“Stroll” What a riff!!! 😀
Every time I come back watching wich pickup is it and I see always the black winter. I love that "airy" sound. Like it's really open and has a lot of clarity. Want to try it on my strat
I have the alternative 8 in my baritone with a jazz in the neck and it's such an awesome pickup~
Yes, it's a unique sounding pickup.
Hi, excuse me, Alternative 8 is great also for mid or low gain stuff? Also for more melodic riff and solos?
For exemple, can you play also songs like Bohemian Rhaosody or it is too much?
"Stroll" 😏
Good stuff! Would be interesting to hear how the Duncan Jupiter Rails compare to these.
Hi Mike. Have you reviewed the Seymour Duncan Pegasus 6 Humbucker Bridge pickup yet? Cheers.
I’m looking for a stong, powerful pickup, but smooth and brilliant.
So, a pickup for rock and metal, but also melodic solos, emotional riffs, tight and shiny power chords, some harmonics…
So, I was thinking about Seymour Duncan Jazz in the neck, and Seymour Duncan Alterative 8 in the bridge.
For bridge, in addition to Alternative 8 I was thinking about Seymour Duncan Custom (SH5), it seems maybe more balanced and versatile…
Or I was thinking about DiMarzio Steve’s Special, it’s a mid-scooped powerful and shiny pickup (building with Steve Vai).
What do you think about Alternative 8? (And if you used them, also Custom and Steve’s Special).
What do you suggest me?
In The 1st chug comparison toward the end was interesting.
The jb had the least difference between muted and open,
The alternate 8 was probably best overall in that particular section,
But the ceramic pickups seemed to compress between open and palmed. Like the volume sort of dropped between stages. That’s weird.
Just bought a set to put in my ltd Viper. It had EMG HZ originally, which I found a bit bland, so I pout BKP Boot Camp, True Grit, which were underwhelming. I have been meaning to go back to EMG 81/60 but never got around to it. These puppies will do the trick nicely.
If i want to install SD Invader on bridge, which one is the best neck pickup? Can anyone suggest to me, most of the time i play metal song
Duncan Distortion Neck, just like Karl Sanders.
Thanks, you've confirmed for me the Alternative 8 as a higher output alternative for the JB. I still like the JB, but if I need more JB output, I'll use an A8.
Also I'm quite surprised at how versatile the Black Winter from clean to wild. Methinks I'll be using the Black Winters more than just in heavy metal.
Their bones... Genius ahahahah
1st Holcomb, 2nd Alt 8, 3rd BW, 4th Nazgul, 5th JB
I don’t like any of them!
GREAT video though. Wish more folks would do stuff like this.
