When I initially grabbed this Squier Bullet Strat, I saw the potential to make a metal machine out of it, and so I did. After using this guitar to compare Fishman Classics a while back, I decided I need something a bit more aggressive. So, I got a @seymourduncan Blackened Black Winter, and the rest is history! With all of my modifications, this thing is such a perfect and simple chug monster, and for less than $300 in total!! In the video I go through all the changes I made, play it in a mix and demo some of the clean and high gain tones using Neural DSP Plug-ins.

I'm definitely looking at throwing a Black Winter in my MIM/Player Series Strat in the bridge, probably leave the single coils for the middle and neck as I'm already HSS. I watched this before fully deciding on even keeping the Strat, and now I definitely wanna put black winters in there. Great video, as always.
Also looking at a 7 string guitar with Black Winters.
ohhhh amazing sound of the BW, I liked a lot and I hope see more videos of BW lml
greetings from mexico
Best demo of this pickup. I have an ibanez S series I want to do something fun with. I think these pups are the ticket. Thank you sir.
Best pickups of all time
Really cool mods on that Squier. I've been using Black Winters in my Squier baritone for several years now and haven't gone back. Those pickups are much more versatile than people seem to realize. I think it's actually a great pickup for coil splitting, which seems surprising to most folks! Really liked the tone you got with the Archetype Nolly too. Between the BW pickups and that plug-in, the mids are just perfect. Good video, thanks for sharing.
love the hardtails
Fantastic choice on the pickup! I love that one. Your Squier sounds pretty awesome! Also, your mix sounds great.
The black winter might be my favorite passive pickup after this. It may have dethroned the Nazgul. Also… Ever since getting the GetGoodDrums Modern and Massive, mixing has become 100% better. I kinda want to do a video soon more focused on the mixing/recording side of things. Just not sure what hasn’t already been done to death on YT.
@@BaritoneGoatStudio do it anyway! It’s YOUR take so it hasn’t been done to death.
i love that twang feel thingy, its tight
I really like my KM-6 w black winters. Sounds great.
Ive got a 2000 model non bullet with emg 81,shaller locking tuners, graph tech saddles and it is a beast. I had no idea j root would have a similar model but it's simplicity at its best..
That thing is nice man. I've got a limited edition squire standard. I upgraded the 2 point trem, upgraded electronics, changed the stock humbucker for a high output Wilkinson alnico 5, graph tech nut, roller saddles, and planet waves locking tuners. It turned out great. I can play any type of music, and get any sound I want very versatile and fun to play guitar. I'm thinking about making a chug monster like this one in the video, out of an old first act I've got lying around. 😀🤘
Some of the Squier necks I have played are on par with their fender big brothers. And this one had such a well made neck, I knew I could just add couple things and get it to sounds as good as some of my 1k plus guitars. If the guitar has a good neck, the rest is just parts! I would be curious to see a first act Guitar get some mod treatment and how the results would be.
@@BaritoneGoatStudio haha! That's exactly why I went ahead and modded my squire. I found it at a pawn shop for $100, so I couldn't resist. It's Indonesian made and is one of the best squires I've ever played. It was a perfect mod platform. Yeah the first act was a gift from one of my customers. The guitar is junk, but the body resembles a jazzmaster, and the neck is surprisingly good after a fret job. I'm just going to paint it and fit it with parts I have laying around. I've always wanted a lime green chug monster, so Im just going to build one. Lol
Love me some stripped down metal Strat!
Solder-day. Classic
Black Winters and Nazguls all day, every day.
I enjoyed the video id love to see you buy the harley benton st20 i think is the model the "jim root" strat i have one and love it you have a pickguard with a fishman in it you could install on it that guitar has a battery cavity in the back which would be perfect for it and do a comparison between the squire and the Harley Benton and which you would prefer
I have yet to pull the trigger on a Harley Benton guitar. I have had a couple in the Thomman shopping cart and just haven’t made the jump yet. That one would be a good comparison. The Fishman Classic doesn’t hold a candle to the Black winter for high gain though. But getting another Black winter pickup and throwing it in the HB wouldn’t hurt my feelings.
@@BaritoneGoatStudio i love the no frills single pickup guitars for metal i have some fishman moderns in an ibanez i thought about pulling and getting a single pickup pickgaurd and throwing it into the Harley Benton but i despise soldering so much i like the Harley Benton better than the Ibanez gio i have fwiw
This sounds very very nice. That pick guard is also awesome, is that a custom cut?
No actually! It was a random Amazon find! I was surprised to see a single humbucker cut strat guard already made. a.co/d/30BoUBe
@@BaritoneGoatStudio that is one heck of a find! Thanks for sharing sir!
Those mods look sick! 🤘🏻 Where did you get that pickguard?
It is actually an Amazon find. a.co/d/30BoUBe
Thanks a lot 🔥
Dude. Try a push/pull direct-to-jack pot on that volume knob. Tricking out cheap guitars is the way! 👍🏻
You just made me learn something. Ha ha. I have heard the term bright switch used without actually knowing what it really was. That mod sound like something I might try. Would it work in conjunction with a coil split? Like could I use my punch pull for the direct to put mod and still split the coil with a mini toggle?
@@BaritoneGoatStudioyes, you could do that. you could leave your coil split as is on the volume knob and add a direct-to-jack switch, too. They will work in conjunction - you can send the split single direct to jack or the full humbucker direct to jack depending on which is selected. I have this setup myself but with coil split on tone knob and direct switch on volume knob. Look into old school fender esquire wiring. I really really like the metal pickguard you've got, btw.
@@gnarlantlers70 I am gonna have to play around with it and see what I can do. I like to tinker, so this is right up my alley.
I got that guitar around 2007. Fun evh style and only $100. Does your low e string kinda sound/feel floppy or loose?
The way it was set up in drop tuning with a thicker string on the bottom wasn’t too floppy. But with the top loading bridge, all the strings felt like they had a little extra give compared to a string through guitar.
pick guard link please
nevermind see it
What's the difference between Black Winter blackened and regular Black Winter (except the look)?
Blackend uses hex screw pole pieces which tend to be harder oxide steel material. These can sometimes increase the inductance of the magnetic field. Overall the use of hex screws in most pickups are meant to increase top end and tighten bottom end frequencies. SD has some other pickup variations like the Custom 5 and Full Shred that are the same pickups with different pole types and both sound fairly different.
@@BaritoneGoatStudio Do you think Blackened are more brighter and crispy, and regular with more bass?
@@giannispapazogloy5978 I definitely know that my Blackend had a bit of top end bite and was very tight sounding. The clips of the regular black winter I have heard seem to have a little more bass, but I haven’t had a chance to play one outside of a store and really listen to it.
@@BaritoneGoatStudio Ok. Thanks. And nice video.
