      While this is mostly true, I think it still matters a lot in terms of feel and if you can get your sound earlier on you won’t have to spend as much time EQing to get your desired sound

    3:46 thank you for this. As a black metal musician it’s so hard to find gear demos that include this kind of playing. It’s always a gamble on weather or not a piece of gear works well for the genre when everyone always plays chugga chugga riffs. It’s difficult to find something that enhances the note separation when trem picking chords with high gain and not something that sounds like a blender (unless you’re into shit like Revenge or Mütiilation)

    • @cjmy2701
      @cjmy2701 4 года назад +3

      I have Nazgul in a all mahogany guitar, it took me over a year to learn its sweet spots dialing in. It’s a very fragile window that almost doesn’t exist. But the tones I conjure from it, there’s nothing else that feels like it. Its a one trick pony though and lacks character in any area outside of brutality. I’ve been a fiend for Black Winters, but still wanted something with more character. I just got a Jupiter a month ago. Debating on a new axe for it, or throw it in the all mahogany SCX7. The new guitar I’m looking at is a Dk7q ht. What’s the opinion? Jupiter in a SCX7 mahogany or Dk7q ht alder?

      The Jupiters don’t get the respect they deserve. I’ve played through Nazgul and Jupiter on personal guitars and it’s not even close. The Jupiters are clearer, punchier and more versatile to me. If you like to chug at all, the Jupiter may be the king of passive chugging pickups. Note clarity in chords under even extremely high gain is crystal clear.

    Very interesting video, thanks for that! The Nazgul sound very well balanced (probably across the board the most recommendable) the Jupiter are very similar but a bit on the harsher side, I don't like them as much...the Black Winter on the other hand...damn, they are completely different from those two with quite a unique flavour.
    The Black Winter are my personal favorites but the Nazgul are probably the jack-of-all-trades.

    Hi again. I'm that guy who wrote that short book length comment on your AHB-2 Blackout vs. EMG 81 video. :)
    Thanks again for all the trouble you go to to make these. You have really great tone and mixes in your videos.
    In a mix with that much saturation it's really difficult for me to tell the difference between the three. I imagine they all feel very different in the hands, though.
    If you haven't posted one already, I'd love to hear a Dino Cazares Retribution signature video. That seems like a really bright, articulate 7 string pickup.
    The Retribution will probably be the next pickup I try in my Jackson 7 string Floyded Soloist or my 7 string BC Rich Outlaw (somewhat rare older 90s-00s tune-o-matic 7 string model).
    There are a lot of Duncans I would love to see in a 7 string version. I've always been a Full Shred fan and recently a Parallel Axis convert.
    Brandon Ellis seems to have brought the PATBs back with his taste for them. I don't think those are made in 7 string versions but the custom shop can probably hook you up with anything. His idea for reversible coils is cool too. I often put bridge pickups in the neck and flip them so the logo is upside down.
    I would also like to see more passive mount 7 string humbuckers used with a 7 string sized Triple Shot mounting ring for more wiring options, but last I checked with SD they will not build this for you. This is probably because of the rarity of 7 string guitars with pickup rings.
    I guess it's for this reason that I tend to prefer active pickups with 7 strings in low tunings, especially for master/tone only guitars.
    If you can't use four conductor passive pickups to their full potential in a 7 string guitar because you don't have enough holes in the body for all the required toggle switches and push/pull pots, then four conductor passive pickups seem like a waste to me.
    It seems that the vintage Strat world with all of its many wiring mods hasn't really meshed well with the 7 string world. Even 7 strings with single coil pickups seem somewhat rare. I hope this changes.
    I'm also hoping for multiscale 8 string Floyd Rose bridges so I can use a high A string instead of a low F# (F#1 competes with the kick and bass too much for my taste). I doubt that will happen any time soon either.
    These days, I go for mid output pickups (12k-14k) for clarity, with the output boosted by the pedal and preamp, but it's nice to hear what's going on in the higher output offerings.
    Thanks again for your work sir. Much respect to you.

    • @MetalHeadProductions
      @MetalHeadProductions  2 месяца назад +1

      Well I'm glad some people are still finding these wild videos helpful. Would definitely do some things different and better today, but that's ok.
      It would be awesome to see those pickup rings for 7 string, pretty easy for them to do too.

    • @AAAA-lt9hq
      @AAAA-lt9hq 2 месяца назад +1

      @@MetalHeadProductions I think the Triple Shots are made overseas and imported and not made in house at SD. This is why the custom shop won't do them in 7 string width. I have noticed the screw locations with the Triple Shots often do not line up cleanly with every guitar--even metric based imported stuff like Epis.
      For passive guitars, I wire each pickup to its own volume knob. I put a Shadow killpot on the bridge and a phase switch on the neck. Using all this with the Triple Shots I have pretty close to every wiring option I would want in a V/V/T guitar. Some passive pickups like the Duncan Customs really respond well to split and parallel tones. Others like the Gibson 498t/500t/Dirty Fingers don't seem to change much.
      All this stuff can take a long time to wire up and it's a bit overkill live but in the studio the flexibility is nice. Live I tend to prefer active pickups and master volume only or V/T for simplicity.

      personally, for my music a I prefer the keith merrow fishmans. not too bright, not too dark, and it's medium output pairs well with an OD/boost into an amp for high gain without getting over saturated or shrill.
      it all depends on what you're going for, and if you're using 6 or 7. like for 6 string I'd probably lean more Devin Townsend fishman. Super tight and super hot, dont even need an OD really, and because of the tightness are better for lower tunings.
      everything listed are great pickups, my least favorite probably being the blackouts.

      @@philipjohnii9593 the KM and DT set sound way different. the KM set seem to have been built around the idea that you're going to boost your amp with and OD to make it tighter. Medium output, fairly balanced pickup with a slight bump around 200hz for some grunt in palm mutes.
      the DT set is really, really high output, super tight low end, bit of a mid scoop, and a lot of top end. As far as an active sound, its something I really like.

    Not enough difference to go wrong with any of these pickups. A mild amp tweak, and you can get them to sound almost identical. That being said. I’ll probably try the black winters next. Already laying waste with my nazgul in my LP Custom. I prefer actives. But I have plenty of them in my ESP’s and LTD’s. Plus I hate changing out everything on Gibson’s. With killer passives out there, no need. But given the choice between active and passive, active all day 🤘🏻

    • @MetalHeadProductions
      @MetalHeadProductions  4 года назад +1

      Eh, it's more about how they got the amp and pair with a boost. The Jupiter is super hot and can get harsh with a boost, the black winter has this ugly nastiness in the lower frequencies that shows up no matter what amp I use, I even hear it in recordings of bands that use it, although that's part of it's charm, and the naz has that low mid thing for palm mutes that allow it to sound full without the extra muddy low end.

      @@MetalHeadProductions I moved my nazguls to another guitar and dropped EMG’s in my Gibson Les Paul custom (cork sniffers nightmare 😂) . That thing is a death hammer now. The nazguls actually sound better in my Ibanez with a longer scale length. Which makes sense as I believe they were designed for 7 and 8 string instruments. I’m dropping the black winter (bridge only) into my schecter E1-FRS. It has a Sustainiac in the neck, but I’m contemplating ripping it out. It’s got an SD parallel axis distortion in it now. But just too much bottom end. Might sound better in a thinner sounding guitar. But there are very few SD pups I don’t care for in general. Not a huge fan of the parallel axis distortion at this point. The stock apocalypse (schecter brand) sounded more balanced. But mostly I rock EMG’s. Everybody jumped ship when the Fishmans came out. I thought they were ok. But still liked EMG’s better. All the guitar companies started loading their guitars with the Fishman pups. Now I see a lot going back to the tried and tested Emgs.
