Will Graham's comment about Francis in the book has always stuck with me: "As a child, my heart goes out to him. As an adult, he's irredeemable." I feel like that sentiment can apply to so many people - trauma profoundly shapes a person, but it's what you do with it that proves what kind of human being you are.
The thing is though, it is hard to imagine for a sane person the kind of destructive and compelling influence an insane mind may exert on someone afflicted.
I don't think Francis was "merely" traumatized, since most traumatized people pull themselves up from it into normalcy again.
His issue with Schizophrenia ran deeper and controlled him.
How can one demand morals and ethics out of a person who is born to be unable to exhibit these abilities? It's like demanding a person born without legs to walk or run.
That's not a defense of Francis' actions, and ultimately the world is a safer place with Francis being dead. He probably had to die, or at the very least be locked away from society forever.
But at the same time, I think it's more fair to say that his condition was terrible rather than he being terrible. Had he been born without his mental deformity, things might've turned out differently.
I think true evil comes more from those who are certainly born with the capacity and ability to lead good lives, but choose evil just to satiate some perverse urges or desires.
The books are all amazing.

@@sevenproxies4255 his condition was indeed terrible, but killing him was doing him a service since he wouldn't have to listen to the voices again.
Locking him up would basically be hell on earth: forever listening to the voices but being unable to do anything to quell them.
Considering he bites his victims and attacks on a full moon, I’m kinda surprised the press didn’t call him “The Werewolf Killer” or something.
As I recall, the unflattering nickname was part of the same psychological warfare that got the journalist killed. They were hoping it would piss him off enough to do something stupid.
It just tracks better in a story. Making a big dragon into tiny flying around harmless fairy. Media not getting him that much is like ultimate disrespect in his mind. There is similarities both being a winged creature from imagination. Then again completely opposites of each other in many ways from size to purpose to whatever. Also you can just take just the fairy part and think him taking it as a disrespect alone.

I agree. Though, that's not to say that The Tooth Fairy name could still be applicable to a creepy serial killer, probably one who has some sort of emphasis on teeth, like ripping out some or all of his victims' teeth as trophies or the like.

Francis was a fantastic complimentary character to Hannibal. While Hannibal has full control of himself and does the things he does simply because he wants to. Francis is a man whom really just wanted to be loved but too much rejection and abuse fractured his mind.

Dolarhyde and Gumb had a great contrast. Dolarhyde killed people to transform them, Gumb killed people to transform himself
I'd almost agree with you if it wasn't for the fact that the writers had to include the backstory to Misha, which I believed ruined this whole concept.
Because, while both Red Dragon and Silence of the Lambs do go into great detail about the pathologies of Francis and Jame Gumb, explaining what made them resort to their actions, with Hannibal's case what makes him work is that he DOESN'T really have a pathology, let alone is suppose to have one.
Sure, his certain traits such as his distaste for discourtesy and being a very picky eater. But why Hannibal is a cannibalistic psychopath is never really explained or really even hinted at, in the original first two novels, which was THE WHOLE POINT. He was written as less of a fleshed out character and more of a manifestation of evil itself. Kind of like Judge Holden (Blood Meridian). Someone who's beyond logic or explanation, not a puzzle that can be solved, he just is who he is.
Lines like, "The psychologists call him a psychopath, they don't know what else to call him. (Red Dragon)" and "He's not some kind of vampire. They don't have a name for what he is. (Silence)", were meant to sum up who Hannibal is. Therefore, trying to make Hannibal Lector on the same league as Francis and Jame, strips from Hannibal this disturbing ambiguity, contradicting the entire essence of his character.
Ralph Fiennes was born to play villains.

As terrifying as Dolarhyde is, "The Tooth Fairy" has to be the least intimidating nickname for a serial killer ever.

Then you're missing the point of how that name was given. He envisioned himself as The Red Dragon. Freddie Lounds nicknamed him the Tooth Fairy instead to anger him and throw him off. Because of this, Dolarhyde kidnapped, tortured, and brutally murdered him.

Tom Noonan acted his part properly. I blame the script and the time period Manhunter was made for any lack of Dolarhyde's portrayal.
Francis's backstory sounds like something that an actual serial killer would've gone through as a child. I guess it makes sense that Thomas Harris based him off of a real serial killer much like he did with Buffalo Bill.

Considering how James Gumb is a mascot for transphobes I don't think it's a good idea. It would probably end up becoming Vile Eye's most political video.
Don't get me wrong I think SotL is a great book and film I just hate the way that villain is used as a petty excuse to bully and kill vulnerable people in real-life.

There will always be someone or some group who are offended by a portrayal of someone because it hurts some group that they belong to. Some people are just looking for something to fight over.
@@slackerdenile8836 I think a video could work if VE discusses the transphobic element of Buffalo Bill’s portrayal and the cultural impact of the character. It could be like Lindsey Ellis’ video which briefly touches on him, but via the context of character analysis.

Thomas Harris can REALLY write convincing monsters. Love the book, the movie and show. I have seen manhunter, but it was like 25 years ago, I barely remember anything other than Tom Noonan being scary as hell.

Man hunter is at best an okay movie, but it has not aged well. There are so many 80’s cliches it’s cringe worthy, and some of the casting was off the wall. William Peterson was an excellent Graham, however. In the scene where he speaks to Lecter you see how on edge he is, trying to keep up a confident front while standing a few feet from the last person on earth he ever wanted to see again.

I loved the novel. That being said, two scenes from "Manhunter" are seared into my mind.
Francis's reaction to Reba stroking the tiger. His expression is pure orgasm, seeing her acceptance and love for an apex predator.
In the hotel when Will figures out that The Red Dragon has seen the films, his confidence, the inevitability, when he tells the evidence guy to peel back the label. Crawford reacts to Will with fear...and awe. Effing stunning acting!
And the novel was not a page turner, it was a page burner. Compelling from cover to cover.

I think it may be my favourite adaptation of the whole bunch, and that includes Silence of the Lambs. A lot of people criticise it for stripping back the novel to the essentials and not including some of the nuances, but I actually think it benefits the film in some ways, there was a reason they cut the Red Dragon tattoo for example, and I agree with that reasoning completely. Micheal Mann knew exactly what he was doing and he did a masterful job with it. Best Will Graham, best Francis Dolarhyde, and the best Hannibal -Lecter- Lecktor for my money, just slightly above Hopkins (who while I absolutely adore as Lecter doesn’t quite scare me as much as Cox’s more realistic and straight approach to the character) for me. And I don’t mind the changed ending that much either, the final climax is brilliant!
If people really want to see the ending of the novel in a 1980’s film, then they should just watch the end of Dario Argento’s Opera because by his own admission he took it straight from (after apparently being frustrated by Manhunters ending) the Red Dragon novel haha!
The show Hannibal will forever be my favorite iteration of this series. It was tailored to perfection and nobody could change my mind.

As a “Fannibal” before there was such a term, I agree. You can really tell the creators read the books. I love the depiction of Mason Verger, very accurate to the book and more clearly illustrates how much of a monster he is than the movie.

It's not as simple as it being that and I don't actually think Will feels that way for Hannibal it's just Hannibal and his complexity where he lives Will so much because Will understands him! It's far more complex than them being "gay" it's about loving and understanding! Clearly you've not had such a bond and that's cool but don't take it for this when it's far more complex! Even Jack says to Ronaldo Patzi "who among us doesn't want understanding".

Fiennes is definitely my favorite take on the character. This also reminds me, I need to watch Red Dragon again.
Yeah there's a lot of contention in the psychiatric field regarding the two terms, but the general consensus comes down to the nature vs nurture debate. Essentially, psychopaths are born while sociopaths are created, a product of their environment. Making them more prone to impulsive behavior and emotional outbursts, so yes they are capable of empathy, albeit very selective. Psychopaths are completely devoid of empathy altogether.

It's completely over the top in my opinion. I'm sure Ratner told him to camp it up, and camp it up he did. Noonan's performance is far more nuanced and interesting.
Unfortunately Norton is a poor Will GRAHAM in comparison to William Peterson
Francis Dolarhyde is a tale of person who was born imperfect and the misery from the minds of others like his grandmother slowly turned him into a monster and that monster slowly consumed him until he meet someone who could've saved him from the Dragon's influence. But the damage was already done and in the end Francis was consumed by it.

that poor guy was so messed up he had no control of what he was doing. he tried to stop himself and didn't want to be bad, but he had too.
It was implied in the film that he either suffered from extreme depersonalization/derealization and/or full blown borderline personality disorder..
So I don't know if I would call him evil, though his actions certainly were.

Mental illness sucks. It can turn someone into a monster..
Obviously, you have to look at all the particulars, but I feel that this individual was definitely criminally insane.
People who try and hide their crimes can’t pull the insanity card in most cases in my opinion. Either you know it’s wrong or you don’t. Either you hide it because you know it’s wrong or you don’t because you don’t think you’re doing anything to be punished for. We all deal with urges of all kinds, my current urge being how delicious cinnamon rolls are, but even with something that mundane I can’t say it isn’t my fault if I grow a huge ass from eating too many. I know it’s wrong, I know there are consequences to my actions. Silly example but from the characters perspective, he had the urge to commit these crimes and let that urge win out over his conscience. And tried to hide the crimes.
That’s what can be so fascinating about criminals, and I think as a society we want to blame something we can’t control because the idea it can be controlled but people do it anyways is really the true thing to fear.

Thomas Harris is remarkably good at creating interesting and complex serial killer characters.

I ve always considered him a knockoff Hannibal.
If you think about it, their personalities are quite similar. Reserved, intelligent men malformed by childhood traumas. Always polite and calm, manipulating everyone around them to have a front row at the show of human degradation.
Their dynamics w the protagonist are similar as well. Trying to amuse themselves and corrupt the pure at the same time.
You have my vote with any villain Naoki Urasawa has written. Dudes solid. Loved leibert and “friend” from 20th century boys

@@commander1suv492 He doesn't get much love? I thought Johan was often regarded as one of the best villains of all time(rightly so).
as far as I remember Johan never had any traumatic experience first hand but it was his sister I supposed who witness all the experiments and give the account to his brother, Johan till the end remain enigmatic character his motives are subtle shown so his madness but it's being too long since I watch it so I have forgotten much details.
The book (the true first Hannibal Lecter story, not SOTL) was amazing and creepy. I liked SOTL, but it just repeated the same formula from Red Dragon. Francis Dolarhyde was a great villain and Ralph did am amazing jon with him.
Thomas Harris is a genius. I loved the Hannibal movies growing up, and Hannibal rising was the first novel I purchased and read as a kid because I couldn't wait for the movie to come out. Rising was dissappointing, and out of Harris' other books, Red Dragon is the only one I read. I read Red Dragon at least three times, but I'm saving the others because I know Thomas Harris didn't write much and won't write again.
I loved reading Red Dragon. Francis was a much better and more interesting villain to follow then Buffalo Bill was. I love all the adaptations in their own way.
An underrated and truly evil character that is personally one of my favorites due to his terrifying and well developed nature. He may be a shy boy, but he's absolutely a bold character in storytelling.
My compliments to you, another amazingly entertaining analysis. I was lucky enough to actually speak with Ralph Fiennes last year, telling him that his role as Francis Dolarhyde was amazing. He is truly a great actor. As for you Sir, please continue our entertainment for many years to come!

His role as Amon Goeth (Schindler's List) was amazing, too. Holocaust survivors who had contact with the SS commandant noted that Fiennes reminded them of the real man back decades ago.
I’d love to see an analyzing evil episode on Colin Sullivan from The Departed. The lengths he goes to to save his own skin is crazy.
That would be interesting, as well as a separate video on Billy Costigan, a good guy forced to do acts of brutal violence to ultimately bring down a force of pure evil, Frank Costello.
And, Frank Costello would be a great subject, as it’s easy to write him off as evil and profoundly amoral, given an early scene where he shoots and kills a man and a woman and then laughs because the woman “fell funny.” BUT, clearly Costello has some sense of morality given his interaction with the priests and his anger over the abuse of children by the clergy. Maybe that’s where it all started for Frank, abused by someone he was supposed to trust, a person held up as a pillar of the community. Perhaps he dealt with all the pain by becoming desensitized, not only to his own suffering but to the suffering of others.
@@dasky17 a little off subject but does anybody know why they gave Nicholson the name of a real famous mobster Frank Costello spelled exactly the same? Seems kinda lazy, that's like making a movie about a musician and naming him Phil Collins but not the real Phil Collins, the movie character just happens to have the same name. You think they would just choose any other name to avoid confusion?

The dynamic between Dolarhyde, Will Graham and Hannibal make this story one of the best of its kind,
Manhunter being the best adaptation of it.

. I have only seen 3 of these movies. I guess I don't get around the human's entertainment very much. The only one I respected on your list is Hans Gruber. I did like Nurse Ratchet and the guy, Doyle, who got whacked in Slingblade. I prefer watching documentaries, and movies, about real killers like Stalin, Hitler, and the zillion others down through bloody, brutal, human history.
what strikes me is his duality. its the standard jekyll and hyde dynamic. a sordid little hobby, but a very different person nervously parades in public. It reminds me of one of the most curious sayings in terms of its logic "you aren't being yourself"

I remember reading a short article where he talked about Voldemort. He was skeptical about taking the role but his kids urged him to do it, and that when he went to his first wardrobe fitting “something just happened the first time I put on that cloak.” He also said that sometimes there were children on the set, and they always gave him a wide berth. “I once walked past the son of a script supervisor and he burst into tears. I felt very proud of myself.”

You should do Cersei Lannister, Joffery Baratheon, or Ramsey Bolton from Game of Thrones. Of all the villians on that show these three were the most despicable. I just don't know which one deserves to be featured on your channel.

Excellent work. The only detail I think you missed, and something that I always found interesting, was that the families Dolarhyde killed had the exact same structure as his mother's family excluding him; a mother, a father, two sons, and a daughter. I always interpreted that as him thinking that the people he needed to kill had to be, what was in his mind at least, a "perfect" family. To me at least, it felt like another manifestation of his trauma.
Also, neither here nor there, but Tom Noonan has always been easily my favorite portrayal of the character. Even though I don't really think any of the adaptations of 'Red Dragon' have properly lived up to book, 'Manhunter' is easily my favorite because it has the best Will Graham, a very effective Francis Dolarhyde, and so much tension and atmosphere you can drown in it.

I always felt like, if Francis could have waited - held back the Dragon a little longer, until he met Reba - he may have been in the clear, and may have enjoyed a normal adult life, or as normal as anyone has. It’s a tragedy - for the people he hurts and himself. I normally don’t pity the killer, but in this case Harris did a great job making him very understandable, if not entirely sympathetic.

I want to see a movie where the main character is as troubled and disturbed as Dollarhyde, but he gets nearly completely rehabilitated.
That would be an amazing plot to see, a movie that gives the message that is not impossible to become a better person despite the traumas received in life, i'ts a great message to send.
Watch "A Clockwork Orange". The British release of the book (not the American version) has an ending more fitting to an evil person becoming rehabilitated....

@@MrHousecup the movie leaves an ambiguous ending. The book however has him fully rehabilitated. He falls in love and gets married.....
They’ve already done that and it helps nobody who has suffered.
An audience for that narrative consists of the same people ironically wanting the sufferer to fit into a socially acceptable box that can no longer hold the blood and bulging bruises from the beatings.

Yeah he was written to be huge. But with what I know ab bodybuilding now Ralph Fiennes body is actually not bad for a natural bodybuilder of his age. Though the book wrote him like he was a IFBB pro with muscles everywhere

I was just thinking about suggesting a character analysis of Francis to your channel today. And to my very happy surprise, I just opened youtube to find this on the top of my feed. Liked before watching just for the pure coincidence of it.
I think it's so interesting to look at how throughout his life Francis was constantly emasculated by the people around him. The nickname from the orphanage, his grandmother's threats of castration and forcing him to sit down to use the bathroom, the tooth fairy nickname. That emasculation reflects the homophobia of the society Francis was raised in, homophobia that's also reflected in his encounters and infatuation with both Will and Hannibal. Great video! I'll be doing my own video essay on him and posting it soon 👍
I would add on and say homophobia is not only “reflected in his encounters and infatuation with both Will and Hannibal”, but also his crimes against women. He was also a serial rapist and necrophile, and considering his history of abuse, lack of interaction with the opposite sex beyond that “I’ll show you mine” event as a child, etc. He used rape/sex/transformation against women as a sad attempt to reclaim power he felt he never had as himself. His family and those orphans really did a number on him smh

Perhaps it was his choice of victims? The ritual involved? The OCD planning to lead up to the kill? The voices he heard in his head? He was built like a beast (in the books at least)? He writes secret admirer letters to Lecter? Did I miss anything?
I took Francis' "Love" towards his grandmother as an ironic mislabeling of the emotion of hate rather than an honest misunderstanding of what "love" is

I was waiting a long time for this video, I love Hannibal's books and your video was incredible. I feel that each adaptation has given its part regarding who Dolarhyde is, but in my case, my favorite adaptation will always be Manhunter, maybe the size of Tom Noonan helped a lot to make Francis look intimidating. If he had trained his muscles before the movie, he would certainly have given the character much more power. I would have loved to see the Red Dragon tattoo that they prepared for him but never used, it's a shame.
Found this series a couple weeks ago and binged the whole series over that time. Loving these videos. Hopefully you eventually do a study on Handsome Jack from the Borderlands series. He's one of my favorite villains in media.

Actually, there is one person I can think of, from the Karate Kid trilogy, that is evil: Terry Silver, from Karate Kid 3. He's actually been added to the Cobra Kai series. If you decide to create an analysis of him, start with reviewing his character in Karate Kid 3 and then review his character in Cobra Kai.

It would be interesting to see Mr. Glass Analysed. The Horde is harder to analyse as you really don't get enough screen time with all the personalities. Mr. Glass seems better to analyse as he ended up creating the Horde (Unintentionally) and the Hero David Dunn.

Tom Noonan had the characters quiet, withdrawn abs tortured personality but nowhere near the physicality. Ralph Fiennes looked the part but he couldn’t portray Dolarhyde’s inner torment. Richard Armitage brought it all together.

I think someone like Syndrome from "The Incredibles" would be a good one to analyze. People tend to get a lot about his backstory wrong (namely they claim Mr. Incredible said that you can't be a hero without powers when he never did) but there's a lot to the character all the same. For a character in a children's movie, he commits a LOT of murder and for what? What was his REAL motive? Who was he really?
Syndrome is a disturbingly accurate depiction of toxic fandom: He thought himself entitled to be Mr. Incredible's sidekick just because he was his biggest fan, but when Mr. Incredible rejected him and for a good reason, he got angry because his idol didn't do what he wanted.
I thought Francis Dolarhde was terrifying at the end of Mindhunter cutting Will's face with the piece of glass in his hand then robotically throwing Will aside walking out of the room getting the shotgun blasting the ambushing cops at the door but in the book, he was built like a bodybuilder so he would be like the Terminator.
Fiennes nailed that role. He is such a great villain portrayer.
