In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.

Trevor, good to hear your story and lessons. Just to share that these behaviour of teachers are found everywhere: I grew up as a girl in a mining town in Germany and my father and grandfather were workers in the mine. My school experience after primary school was terrible, as I was often forced by my teacher to read my "useless" essays: they often stated that I actually could neither read nor write German and I passed my A´levels solely because of my rebellious uprising (I will show him!)

and my real good exams in English and French (languages I spoke and wrote better than my motherlanguage!). I agree with you that we all need someone to affirm us and build us up and teachers are such a powerful group of people (together with parents obviously) who can make or break a child. I am now working for the United Nations in Abidjan and have spent over 20 years of my life in Africa. I lived in your wonderful country as well...from the glorious 1980 to a less glorious 1994...
