Every NBA Player Breaks This Rule And Refs Are Starting To Crack Down On It

- A few days ago, Jordan Poole was called for a carry violation 3 times against the Miami Heat. This made a controversy across the league because it looks like it's only targeted to a certain amount of players. Carrying the basketball has been a violation since the start of basketball but when Allen Iverson came in, he exploited the rule with his famous killer crossover. Now many players have adopted this dribbling style making it completely unguardable. In this video, we take a look at the carrying violation, the evolution of the call in the NBA and the effects it has in today's game.

I started watching NBA with my old man when I was 7 in 1959, the year Wilt Chamberlain entered the league as a rookie. During the 60s and 70s the referees often called a carry but back then it was an inadvertent mistake on the player’s part, not a deliberate act to bend the rules. This trend to deliberately carry the ball seems to have started on the basketball courtyards when kids wanted to emulate the dribbling wizardry of Pete Maravich whose moving skills while dribbling was legitimate without having to carry the ball. To me, carrying the ball to bend rules in order to gain the advantage is not skillful, it’s sloppy and reflects a personality trait of someone who’s willing to cheat. Bring back rule enforcement.
Yes exactly, alot of players Travel while doing this jump/drop step “ power move “ to the hoop it’s ridiculous. And it shoukd be called a travel
Well said. Agree completely.
Its because totaly adequate.
You are correct. I've watched from 89 to 24 and can still see how much the basketball rules have changed. Prior to 80s players dribbled from there finger tips and were driven to reach the hoop as opposed to the 3ball of today (which is another thing that drives me insane... the shooting formation. They look like WNBA shooters.)
Oh just stop it. A “personality trait”. It takes skill like everything else in basketball.
Traveling and carrying is bull... because defenders have no chance and there are no means to play good defence
When I actively played basketball, there was a ball handeling rule:
While dribbling the ball, man In possession of the ball, "the dribbling hand, can not break a 90° vertical plan... other wise that individual will be called for a carry/travel".
Now that would really break the NBA.
Plus, the "lean in foul", should've never existed.
And obvious flops should be an automatic, technical
Should announce enforcement before the finals. Then the world could see how ridiculous the game has become.
If they bring back this rule and call, the NBA is doomed. This entire generation does it.
If they bring this back, defense would be fun to watch. You can't guard someone who carries. They literally get infinite moves and hesi
@@lello2031 Exactly the point I made. The lack of proper rule enforcement has created an unfair advantage for the offense.
They don't need to bring it back they already have it. They just need to enforce the rule. Players like Kevin Durant carrying of the ball is so pronounced, I have no respect for him. If players don't want to properly develop their dribbling skills while they are younger, then too bad they shouldn't be in the NBA.
Nah it would just make these young guy learn the fundamentals of the game. Then the game would be played like it supposed to be played. And not with all the dribble, dribble, dribble, dribble
would be interesting to see like an allstar event where players didnt have to dribble.
Reggie Miller pulled that occasionally - LONG before Dwayne entered the league.
They changed the rules - often calling the changed rule "The Miller Rule".
But they stopped enforcing it for a while, 'til Hardin started getting away with murder using it.
It was the old "kick out the leg while shooting to draw contact" move.
Poole and Ja carry carry. like hand under the ball and all that.
The lil kids call that a hezi 😂😂
@@gutterbois 🤣🤣🤣
morant doesn' t even try to hide it, like he is straight up cradling that shit like the heisman trophy.
The only problem is with the refs. They call them one sided, like if they got a bet on the game. Jordan Poole was called for carrying the times in one game. I admit that one of them was definitely a carry. Ja was running a marathon the way he was carrying that ball but wasn't called for it
they're definitely the most obvious because of how many steps and the change of direction while cradling the ball.
I am 69 and played in high school and college, I know many say that AI didn't carry the ball, but I recall being shocked that he wasn't called for a carry.
At the time he was carrying the ball. The NBA relaxed their ball-handling rules due to Iverson's popularity.
@@xaviervega468 I didn't want to say that, but I thought the same thing. So many rules have been changed
Killer crossover was Tim Hardaway, not Iverson.
Carries are pretty easy, at least back in the day. If your dribble started from the lower third of the ball, it was a carry. I just laugh at half the players today who cannot dribble without rolling over the ball.
And the fouls are easy - whoever initiates contact. It drives me nuts every time a defender plays great defense and the offensive player decides to simply accelerate into the defender and the ref bails out the offensive player.
These guys in the NBA who can't dribble without constantly scooping underneath the ball are ridiculous.
I.T. rarely carried. A.I. didn't carry as much as people try to say. Both of them used change of pace but if you notice, they didn't put their hands under the ball, nor did they cuff the ball, nor did they even take extra steps most of the time. The studder-step is a legal move and that is taking multiple steps within a dribble. Ja was carrying in these videos. So was KD.
i think when people saw IT or AI and say they carried, it’s because of the longer pause that happens when the ball is in one hand. i guess some people think that counts as discontinuing the dribble cuz it’s really easy to manipulate the ball like that, but i feel like it’s impossible to know if someone is doing that on purpose or if they’re going with the flow of the dribble… idk if that makes sense
KD hand was on the side of the ball .. that’s not a carry … KD is simply doing a pocket dribble … and a pocket dribble is legal
@@Muzicboy3 KD's hand is clearly under the ball. That's his signature move. If he's already got his mind made up what he's going to do, he doesn't put his hand under. If he's trying to see what the defense is going to do, he does put his hand under bc he's determining if he's going to pull up, cross or fake the cross.
@@Muzicboy3 dude how clueless can you be with your comment. Seriously I’ve never seen dumber basketball I.Q than modern day NBA fans and you just proved it
@@michaelb7864 I don’t think you guys understand what “under” the ball is… under has to do with a North & South directional relationship… “side” has to do with a
West/East relationship… KD hand is CLEARLY EAST of the ball… you guys need to either 1 go back to grade school, 2 Go get glasses, contacts or LASIK, or 3,get your heads out of your butts! …
This is why I love Kobe Bryant. He had every move/crossover in the book and didn’t need to carry or travel.
YES!~ KOB respect the GAME! KOB respect when all ppl in an equal footing. That when he enjoy the game, not like that rapperы burps...
@@OlegRTTyou love r@pist?
Man loved r@pist 💀
What? Even Kobe himself in an interview admitted he carried the ball a lot.
I just saw a video where they said Kobe did it too
Agree with your assessment! Some of the moves you highlighted are super fishy. I would say AI exploited the rules, but it was bending and not breaking them. Way less impertinent than what you see today in some cases. Maybe you could say he opened the door for other players to get more and more 'creative'
The game is evolved so much and AI definitely has part to do with that.
AI's famous crossover on MJ was a much clearer example of a carry.
@@Lewis.Alcindor I remember when that move caught on and didn’t understand why or how certain people didn’t get called for carrying but others did. Its like you had to be in a secret club to get away with what certain players did. Thats when I lost interest in playing or learning anything else about basketball. I only casually watch now.
Isaiah Thomas was basically mocking the rule 😂
There is footage of AI in College where the announcer were saying the NCAA changed the carry rule for AI...so if they changed it for him in College, they definitely changed it in the NBA. That was a carryover, not a crossover
Michael Jordan and Reggie Miller used to jump into players all the time to draw fouls before dwayne wade.
Tim hardaway invented the killer crossover.
There is no such thing as a hesitation dribble. When did they make that up?
Carrying isnt entertainment. Its so annoying to watch as a fan. Id rather they call it all the time and maybe players will rely on skill and not cheating.
They should also call traveling on that step back three point shot
step back is ok, it's the double step back that has to be a travel.
IMO they ought to be dealing with the traveling issue first...it's almost embarrassing sometimes
Everyone seems to carry in todays NBA. The way it used to be...was let say your dribbling a globe and if your hand goes below the equator that used to be a carry. I would like it better if they went back to the old rules. The players would complain ...but eventually adapt.
You can’t put your hand under the ball. It’s how you grew up playing and refs called you out on it. Period.
Recently I was shocked when I saw Luca for Dallas doing it repeatedly, carrying all the way
I've watched Luka and I haven't noticed it. I've noticed that Ja Morant and Poole definitely do it more often than other players though
Yup. Luca, Steph, Ja does it all the time.
A hesitation dribble is when you pause your body, not the ball. The second you slow the downward path of the ball you are carrying.
Not even close
Good definition of carrying, “slow the downward path of the ball.”
@@nikolagrmusa3435anything that impedes dribbling motion is usually illegal palming which is interpreted as a carry and he explained it perfectly so learn basketball
Great topic. MJ to me started the carrying and the refs looked the other way. Steph does it correct because he pushes the ball in a direction, not carry the ball. The rule is, the hand can't go half way from under, in todays game, is goes completely under and the refs let it go. They are finally addressing this issue.
And other than putting your hand slightly under the ball, where players have REALLY abused it, which is exactly what Isiah Thomas is doing in this video, is holding or kinda "letting" the ball stay in the air (without putting his hand under it) but taking 1 and 2 steps every time he does it, and he'll do it 3 different times in one possession and that coach is right, how the hell can you guard a guy who's doing that ??? You can't. The average Joe can shake an NBA defender doing that BS.
lol slightly palming the side or back is not carrying
Is it really halfway under? I thought back in the day your hand couldn't go below the horizontal line at all
Crack down on this and moving pics and game is beautiful again. Great video
Hesitation is a carry by the rule you read. Doesn't matter if you change the word. It is a carry.
I have to disagree with you about if carries were called, players would avg 5 turn overs a game. NO, players would adjust and get back to what the fundamental rules are. Refs let Curry kick his leg out on jump shots for 4 years, now that they call it, Curry doesn't do it as much. The Refs are destroying the rule book, the game and the lower divisions.
obviously, the author is not old enough to know the real the killer crossover was dubbed to the player of tim hardaway not allen iverson.
About time they start calling this! This used to be called when I was growing up in the neighborhood. If us novice players can dribble the right way then a pro should have no problem
Nice take on this subject. You want to think about taking on the Euro step or traveling. Thanks keep up the good work
Killer crossover came from Tim Hardaway
I think Tim Hardaway actually called it the "UTEP Two Step" back in the day
It shouldn't be called, let us be entertained. It's a new Era now!
I just want to point out that NBA refs judge a carry by the middle of the palm. If the middle of the palm goes below the middle equator, it's considered a carry, not necessarily if their fingers go below the ball. So, you technically are allowed to have your fingers go beyond the lower equator of the ball, so long as the middle of the palm doesn't go below the ball. You are also allowed to put your hand on the side and behind the ball. That is not a carry, so long as the middle of the palm goes beyond the mid point.
I agree that consistency is key. If youre gonna start calling it, always call it for everyone that does it
One thing that every person here must remember is that the problem is the officiating and not the players. If officials call them consistently, players could adapt and adjust to that. Players play by the rules they are at.
People who cry about this call usually suck in basketball and miss when the finals was the Detroit Pistons vs. san Antonip Spurs. Ya like boring basketball
I been saying it for years, they need to called it all the time
I’d like to see carrying called, offensive player dropping their shoulder and initiating contact either non call or offensive foul again, TRAVELING called, and hand checking return.
FYI, the Jordan Poole spin wasn’t a carry. Hand was on top half of the ball and was floated before he spun. Legit awesome move. Just because something looks different, doesn’t make it wrong
They can carry, they can travel, nobody can play defense without getting called. And then people are like "look how many points this guy is scoring". Yeah. Turns out it's not that hard when you're allowed to run with the ball from half court without dribbling.
That mordant clip was crazy. These guys need to go back to dribbling and stop carrying like that.
My era VS today's era ......as you can see we are not built the same 😂😂😂😂😂
Donavan Mitchell responded to a fan complaining about Ja Morant egregiously carrying on every possession. His response was "we all do it." lol
It is quite simple and depends on the position of your hand on the ball. Once you hand is under the ball, palm up you are literally carrying. It is the only way to pause for extended period of time without the ball dropping on the floor. Call it. Call it consistently. Players would adjust. Brief them that carrying is no longer tolerated and they quickly adapt. As a fan it really pisses me off when the rules are arbitrarily not being enforced.
Ja Morant stays carrying!! About damn time they are calling it 💯❗️
All I know, FIBA refs are consistent with their whistles... If it's travel it's travel, if it's carry it's carry... And I like that, consistency... 👌🏻
These guys have more carries per game than Ezekiel Elliott. I know because I have Ezekiel Elliott on my fantasy football team and Tony Pollard is taking away carries away from him.
FINALLY! Stopped watching NBA years ago. Carrying the ball, flops, traveling has killed the game.
I dont know what rules the NBA goes by, traveling, jumping into people, carrying the ball, its like watching a foreign sport you know nothing about. I cant watch it.
Ja Morant carries all the time and never gets called for it smh
Carrying the ball makes it horribly unfair for the defender.
Good video! Good stuff
It needs to be called every time. Period
Yep.
Hesitation means change of direction, if you change directions without interrupting your rhythm, it’s mostly a carry
If I was a ref, score would end up being 0-0 by the end of the 4th. With about 1,000 turnovers.
Jordan Poole carrying is ridiculous...that clip of Morant carrying is also ridiculous...basketball purists like myself hate that because it creates an unfair advantage to the offensive player.
"weather or not you think it should be called". If they carry it should be called. Doesn't matter who does it.
how you said it should be called but consitently, but there is the problem the game is to fast.
so my solution just made the travel strikter that would also pickup the carry.
But you are wrong about one little thing, that it would be whistle whistle whistle, the players would adapt quickly if they would call carry strikter.
Iverson did not put his hand under the ball or bring the ball to rest. He put his hand on the side of the ball. Isaiah Thomas did put his hand under the ball. NBA refs caught on and started calling it.
At the beginning of KD portion, his hand is clearly under the ball. He then moves it [briefly] under the ball again which allows him to pause. Thing is, he could easily pause with his hand on the side just by doing a slightly harder dribble or by letting it fall rather than dribbling it.
This one and players moving their pivot foot is annoying in today's league
You cannot lay a millimeter of any finger on the southern hemisphere of the basketball
Keep ya damn hand on TOP OF THE BALL!! Simple!!
My other fave is the jump shot fall down bs. I can understand every once in a while but every shot damn.
By definition a hesitation is a pause. Per your own posting of the rule a pause is a violation. Logically then a hesitation is a violation.
Good officials used to call carrying and traveling, across the board, even if they weren't sure about it. They liked to nip it in the bud. Need the same thing, nowadays. They give the offense way too much advantage, considering all the other advantages it has now.
This is the arguement between ACTUAL SPORTS vs. SPORTS ENTERTAINMENT
I hate all the players who carry the ball and ruin the basketball
Just FYI players have been pumping and jumping into a defender decades before Wade. Earl the Pearl was famous for it, for one
The game doesn't move that fast today , it's definitely a carry and it takes away from the honest flow of the game
I love how they just let things like this go for almost 20years maybe more than all the sudden they decide to enforce it this year and don't expect people to be pissed. If they consistently called the rule all these years there would be a clear cut definition of the rule, going back and forth calling it and not makes it super unclear what you're allowed to do or not, so here we are! Consistency matters for refs more than anything, these drastic and instant unannounced changes are just going to convolute the rule and piss off more people.
You act like they're constantly alternating; they stopped calling it in the early 2000s because of AND1 popularity and are ONLY NOW correcting it because its so blatant that young players dont even know how to dribble without carrying and traveling where as before players had the intuition to immediately know when they were doing so. Just stop traveling and palming the ball problem solved its as easy as that...
Why does the last 2 minutes of a bb game feel like an eternity.
havin the hand for half a sec under the ball isnt a carry as long you don't carry. That was the refs logic back in AI times. Jumpin into defenders, hooking defenders arm to draw fouls, Euro 3 step slashing with elbowing 2 defenders left and right getting and1, those mini steps after a fadeaway is what really pisses me off.
They need to call it so that players stop doing that crap. Players will adjust.
Agree with commenter who said they need to call traveling before worrying about this. It's getting absurd.
It's all streetball now. Like to see someone show either how these same violations were being made, with no whistle through the decades. Stats and records, now, only have meaning amongst the time period when the rules were mutual
If y'all don't know how to do the move then y'all assessment is WRONG!!!! I started that crossover before iverson was doing it. As the ball is coming up your hand is about to touch the ball but your hand is NOT on the ball till you're pushing it down. Lots of players try to mimick this move by actually carrying the ball. I've done this move a billon times. I definitely pulled this move on steph Marbury and Allen iverson before. This was in several Brooklyn parks back in the 90s my street ball name was swinglow because I use to do a one dribble move to create space to hit an open shot against taller defenders
That's why offenses are up, when you used to put your hand under the ball you had 2 options shoot or pass now they can continue the dribble
This is why you have to take all these offensive numbers of today with a grain of salt. You can't defend someone with illegal handles. defense is being phased out of NBA basketball.
There is no such thing as a "hesitation" dribble. Carry: to pause dribble. Hesitation: to pause‼️
I’m glad you made this video cause I’ve been saying this for years since Iverson
2:25 the announcers Johnny "Red" Kerr and Tom Dore were upset because no one was carrying like that back then. Just watch old 80s and 90s games. No one was doing that. Iverson started that bs.
You should do another one about traveling especially off of their pivot foot, which technically is not allowed
NBA changed the rules in 2009 to allow up to *4* legitimate steps (counting the "gather") and a BASE of 2 steps.
So taking a step off your pivot foot IN THE NBA is usually legal.
@@bricefleckenstein9666 no...its not 4 legit steps..and gather is not a step...you can gather the ball without taking steps...gathering doesnt mean an extra step.
@@onlyfacts3178 The "Gather" rule allows for 1 or 2 EXTRA steps, depending on the situation, over and above the current "2 step" rule.
READ the rule sometime.
4:53 not even a carry, IA straight up double dribbled and the ref doesn't call it. NBA refs are and have always been a joke.
Poole?
Either this is true or the players in America are so unaware of what a carry actually is. Cuz in Europe players don't have this problem. It's because they are so fundamentally sound
Yoooo the ref said: If he could dribble like that he’d play in the league 😂😂😂 clowned the fuck outta CP3.
If the ref is good enough they will only call it once per game.
That is why there are all these crazy dribbling move videos that I never heard of 30 years ago…because players are allowed to carry and travel like crazy which makes defense practically impossible
Plus it's hard to play defense when any small amount of contact is a foul.
@@fitzgerald434 100%….people say Jordan never got called for traveling but I just watched an old game on RUclips where he called 3-4 times….so that was just a myth
4:52 even if the camera is behind he switched imhis dribble from left to right without ball bouncing from the wood
A hesitation dribble and a carry are both illegal. They both fall under the umbrella of travelling. They just dont get called which is why people think they are legal to do. It is like the people that think that going 5 miles over the speed limit is legal because the cops dont pull people over for it. Technically cops can pull you over for going 1 mile over the speed limit.
The main problem with rampant carrying is players slowly doing it worse and worse slowly getting away with more every time. If it wasn’t called then what’s it matter if you carry a little longer before dribbling or passing which would eliminate the carry but that’s not what we’re talking about
Well you can rephrase the rule saying the center of the hand doesn't go "south" of the ball's "horizon". Or that the back of the hand can't face Southern than the horizon... just saying "under" can lead to different interpretations.
I’m glad they are calling this now it’s way outta hand
The blatant carrying and traveling makes it hard for me even look at an NBA game now. They don't even try to hide it! lol, NBA is "entertainment" basketball.
Good, they're are rules in the game. All far game changing players but it's extra special when a player can do what he does without traveling or carrying or walking. Love the video man, fundamental basketball/sports are important. Happy New Year ✌️💙
I was watching a doc on Tim Donaghy, he made it clear when refs have a personal beef with a player, they calling all their travel and carrys😂
Tbh I think the regs governing carrying should be lessened. Nba players' dribbling bag will so limited without being able to get a little hangtime on the ball. Your fav players like KD and Harden will get like 10 TOs a game if refs called carry like they supposed to
It’s mainly Ja Morant
If it's a rule then it should be called. I've never been a fan of players getting star treatment from the refs. In old school bball you would see role players come out fearless, ballin like crazy. Because back then there was less preferential treatment for stars. Then it got to where it didn't really matter what happened. Refs just give the call to the star. Taking away all motivation from role players to try thier best.
either call it consistently, or change the rule. simple as that. it’s no longer entertaining when the integrity of the game is gone
nahhhh 1:20 is crazy LMAO
Stephen Curry is one of the few players, that dribbles cleanly. Even he Carrie’s sometimes, because the rules are so lenient today.
THE OFFENSE IS TOO MUCH FOR THE DEFENSE NOWADAYS! THE OFFENSE LOOKS FANTASTIC BCOZ OF THIS VIOLATIONS THAT WERE BEING IGNORED!
I think because of how much players do it, they can either call it whenever it happens, not call it all (ie. Remove it from the rule book) or maybe some kind of rule change.
I play in very low level leagues in rural Australia and I noticed carrys start to be called less and less in the 2010s. I first started playing 2004 and ref's were all over it for my first few years.
Honestly as long as a player doesn't either scoop it up and take several steps then continue dribbling or come to a complete stop with their hand under it then continue I don't care, I'd prefer the game to just keep moving rather than having more whistles blown.
