I crossed the English Channel many times in the 1970s on a huge hovercraft, along with several hundred passengers, buses, cars ect. It was awesome, went from a concrete loading area right on top of the water, 3-5 swells meant nothing, smooth and fast! Loud as hell and you couldn’t go outside, but it *definitely* worked!

@@ralphalvarez5465 Did I say it was Uncle Rich's fault? On re-reading my comment, I don't see that anywhere. Whoever was to blame, the lessons can be learnt by the entire team, and should be. It's not worth someone being injured for internet entertainment, likes and shares. That said, obviously my comment was tongue in cheek, I'm sure it's perfectly safe to hoon around on a jet-powered hovercraft with an open container of fuel and a child in the front seat. I trust 100% that, like wrestling, bungee jumping and lion taming, the appearance of danger was a carefully crafted pretence, whilst in reality, a highly trained team of professionals was at work behind the scenes to ensure the well-being of all involved.
That gave me really bad vibes too... Hope not another person gets hurt.

As someone who tried building their own Hovercrafts in middle school and high school, this shows me (now in my mid 30's) where we could have gotten to if we just kept plugging away at it. Childhood dreams can can true. Thank you for that Rich, and keep up the great content.

Re: Steven, he is handcrafting flutes in a communal setting. He has found the true meaning of his life. Rich reached out to him to test drive the Hovercraft and he was concerned about a lack of residuals from the videos. The flute song’s apparently were copyrighted.
I'm never disappointed by a Rich Rebuilds release. This was a quality episode.

The originally hovercraft is actually a well-packaged design for a manufacturer. Like a lot of small engineering firms / projects they didn't consider that it would need to be maintained and look at the packaging from that perspective. They did what was easiest for them in the short-term.
leenda has such great energy! she's so eager and happy to do whatever she can to help and learn. that's such a wonderful way to be.

i think she doesnt have anything else to do, as most females dont really have hobbies for their own. have you ever seen women sitting at a bar and having fun and enjoy the moment. i havent in my life time.

Hovercrafts were used as ferries across the English Channel for years. They were referred to as Hoovers (same thing they call all vacuum cleaners). I took a hovercraft ferry to Newfoundland from Maine. It was many hours quicker than the regular ferry but pitched and rolled so much lots of people got seasick. They said it was the nature of the hovercraft, independent of how rough the seas are.
I think Ste-Von ran away with one of the male nurses from the hospital. 🤣😂🤣😂

im here for Rich and he is the only reason why i subscribed, if Steven comes back great if he does not come back great. What Steven can maybe do is start a channel for his fan base and they can go over the to support him.

I can confirm they do float without the fan working. I was doing an experience day and the fan sucked up a stone just as I was entering a water section. The fan exploded and I have to be rescued and did not sink lol. Btw there are loads of jet powered hovercraft, the ones that did a ferry service across the English Channel had two rolls Royce Spey. I think the fans were turbo props though.

A couple of things, I'm glad you brought that dude in to check on you. He played a major factor in doing a lot of things and the ride that he demonstrated look like it was so much fun. The jet engine with more directional control was great. Keep him in your videos. The right tools for the right job. Keep your resources open, Keep your resources open you do know a lot of people.

Fun (maybe) fact about that fan on the hovercraft. They're exactly the same as what is used in commercial tube axial fans which are in carpark or building ventilation systems. I used to work as a HVAC engineer.

You need to install a lift up rudder system on the hovercraft. It will give you turning stability and then you can just lift it up before you hit land. If you ask me that makes way more sense than changing air direction.
It is pretty well known those skirts don't last on asphalt. That's why most people use them on water or grass. I hope you figure out the fuel consumption. Looks really fun.

On a serious note what about taking? The 2. Motorseparated? On put them on each side of the hovercraft isolate them and make them individually thrust it so one side. Pushes left one side pushes right instead of tilt steering.

I used to have the scat, a lot of noise, dirt, but a whole lot more fun.
6 blades will make the throttle more responsive.
Reduce the angle of the 6 blades since you only need lift, you need to keep the engine speed in the power range.
You can reduce the duct size of the skirt to balance the lift.
Keep it rear heavy to "land" or you will "nose in".
You really should be testing on water, safer if you have a chase jetski .
I would not recommend grass field unless you plan to start a fire......
Snow covered field would be easier on the Scat.

This is the smartest, most well-informed, and underrated comment on here right now. They powered up the blades just to refocus them entirely underneath, giving too much lift. Then they ripped a brand new skirt on the pavement.
An easy way to get springs off like that , is to use a piece of small rope like 550 cord if you don't have a good set of pliers. Loop it through the end and pull it off. You then have a lot of control.
The struggle taking place in the background with the 5 gallon bucket was enough of an eye detractor.

changing the number of blades on the fan is kinda like changing the gear: more blades = higher gear, less blades = lower gear. technically more blades are less efficient, but its not the main effect you're experiencing.

I wonder if mounting the jet engines on the outside of the fan duct would give you more thrust? That way they have unrestricted intake air flow instead of having such a small area of airflow in between the 2x4’s and maybe 6” in front of the rudder piece. I know this was a quick slam it together type of thing, but you’ve got some killer fabricators that can whip something up!!
The further apart they are, the better the steering response and control too.

It's nice, but what is Rich going to use it for? Two minutes run-time doesn't allow for much playtime. Those jet engines use up far too much fuel even at part-throttle.

Turbines like these are most efficient at flight speeds 200 km/h and up. Putzing around the parking lot, not so much. I'm also seeing a lot of obstruction around the air intake side. You'll be more efficient the more air you can bring in. Don't forget to mount the anti aircraft guns like they did in the James Bond movie...because that won't spin this thing around on a dime, noooo not at all!

The best design for a hovercraft had thrusters placed two in the front for braking, one each for the four corners for greater control of steering, one in the rear for forward thrust, one below for vertical lift. It gave the greatest control over the vehicle. Hovercraft can be made buoyant so that when fuel does run out, you need to take a break for whatever reason, or if there are mechanical problems the craft acts like a boat. No worries of sinking.
At least Uncle Rich wasn't going commando with his fly open. That would be truly embarrassing - for everyone else 😆

Hello from Southsea in the UK, we have one of the only commercial hovercraft in the world that crosses over The Solent to the Isle of Wight. It takes about 10 minutes and is really fun. Tey don't have drivers but have pilots, always thought that would be a pretty great job.
Look into home "heating oil" it's just diesel with a dye to indicate its not taxed for road use. Normal home tanks are about the size of a 55gal barrel or two. I figure the prices should be dropping even more since we're a month into spring.

Hey Rich. I didn't think you are the guy who cuts fiberglass with grinder disc. I mean you can put circular saw blade on that thing and it cuts way better and with less dust. As a bonus, it's dangerous as hell and exceeds maximum rpm with 2-3x. It's not enough to cause immediate failure but it definitely makes life more exiting.
