Hey Rich, I worked for Tag McLaren in Woking, England as my first job after graduating from 1990 to 1992. I discovered recently that some software we wrote all those years ago is still used by the maintenance staff to service the McLaren F1 supercar - the software/hardware was also used to program and diagnose the formula one race cars of that era - the Ayrton Senna era. Who knew that in this world of almost everything being disposable there is something that I worked on that is still being actively used. I can't think of anything else in my career that has had that level of longevity. Oh, and after Senna there are no great F1 drivers :-)

Anyone can easily verify this by putting them in a vise with a load cell when charging, or alternatively use a micrometer before and after. It’s large at about 0.5% max difference.

A couple of milliamps for a few hours can revive a dead battery. But watch out with Li-ion batteries, once they have been deep discharged, they have definite dendrite damage and that means the battery can still work for a while and then just go dead real quick when the dendrites start to touch each other after a few more charges.

@17:57 you can see arc over and a puff of smoke because the positive terminal didn’t make a good connection. You are lucky mclaren didn’t use a type of bms that blows a fuse and locks itself up in a permanent failure mode. Those systems require a reflash of memory to clear it once fixed, but you can’t because the companies lock you out of the system.

Also sad to hear Tavarish is not dropping the hybrid system, its what makes a P1 a P1 so it would be interesting to know how that would effect its value.

My 2019 Mercedes S63 has the same Li Ion battery from A123 systems. Mercedes only charges 1800 for the replacement for what it is worth. The only rational for this battery is weight savings. If you can work your way around the Mclaren software you might be able to code the Li Ion battery nannies to turn off and just use an AGM battery. That is what I am going to do when my battery eventually dies. Sounds like Mclaren is an even bigger rip off than Mercedes which I guess is not surprising. Would love to source a new A123 Li Ion unit but sounds like they only sell to OEM manufacturers.

Did you add the metal plates in between each cell ? (looks like you didnt) - they are needed even in normal operation to prevent excessive expansion and damage to the battery cell. Just like the pouch cells on a Nissan leaf - is needed to keep a battery alive for any decent length of time....the Leaf uses strong bolts and nuts to compress the whole thing together.....

    • @JasonWW2000

I'm a sailboat owner, and we often have more than one HEAVY batteries for our boats. However, we are always trying to reduce weight. I wonder if through this POC test someone could create a deep cycle marine battery that offers similar amp hours, but weighs far less. I guess the future looks bright..

I’m surprised McLaren use pouch cells for their low voltage battery. Those cells are good at high power output but not good for longevity. It is actually easier to hole punch & bolt the pouch cell tabs together than trying to weld them. Maybe try converting the battery to the Molicell P45B cylindrical cells.
Is that 720S in Glacier White? I love that colour on that car.
