My 2019 Mercedes S63 has the same Li Ion battery from A123 systems. Mercedes only charges 1800 for the replacement for what it is worth. The only rational for this battery is weight savings. If you can work your way around the Mclaren software you might be able to code the Li Ion battery nannies to turn off and just use an AGM battery. That is what I am going to do when my battery eventually dies. Sounds like Mclaren is an even bigger rip off than Mercedes which I guess is not surprising. Would love to source a new A123 Li Ion unit but sounds like they only sell to OEM manufacturers.
I find using an old nicad charger set to match the voltage of whatever cell count the lithium battery is to get it to 3.6v a cell usually works to revive them
Did you add the metal plates in between each cell ? (looks like you didnt) - they are needed even in normal operation to prevent excessive expansion and damage to the battery cell. Just like the pouch cells on a Nissan leaf - is needed to keep a battery alive for any decent length of time....the Leaf uses strong bolts and nuts to compress the whole thing together.....
Dropped the bombshell at the end “Mclaren” way to go Rich!!!! Will there be a face off with Freddy at the end of all this???? Looking forward to what ever happens!!!
I'm a sailboat owner, and we often have more than one HEAVY batteries for our boats. However, we are always trying to reduce weight. I wonder if through this POC test someone could create a deep cycle marine battery that offers similar amp hours, but weighs far less. I guess the future looks bright..
Tavarish needs a bargain battery I heard. You and Samcrac need to help him dig out of the F1 money pit! Rich, I honestly learned alot from this video. Nicely done.
This was a great video and very impressive! Now I just need to go out to my McLaren and fix my bad battery… Oh wait! Neither I, nor anyone I knows owns a McLaren… It is crazy to see how relatively simple the repair on something like that is though!!!
If you float too much amps through the steel, you might have issues how do you stainless steel and possibly band a piece of copper tubing flat folded over it like a bushing drill holes through it and use the nuts to compress the copper were most electricity flows through it, and not the bolt
Seeing you stack those battery cells made realize that you must be a great sandwich maker Rich. Great vid and once again you are the man, Tavarish is going to be happy. Btw GREAT work on the "New version" looks OEM, just great.
Somehow I knew that there would be a Senna in the mix somewhere. Nice work on the "Proof Of Concept". With attention to the details, these batteries aren't hard to make yourself.
LOL, I remember A123. I bought a big chunk of stock in them, and lost every penny. The Chinese bought the company and change the name to B234 which is kind of like pissing in our faces. It's a shame A123 was the original supplier for Tesla, and it was on the basis of that that I was buying stock. But their promising technology did not scale up. What a shame.

I’m surprised McLaren use pouch cells for their low voltage battery. Those cells are good at high power output but not good for longevity. It is actually easier to hole punch & bolt the pouch cell tabs together than trying to weld them. Maybe try converting the battery to the Molicell P45B cylindrical cells. @@Decipher13At the very end, Rich reveals his own McLaren. Tavarish has a P1. So they did watch it.
@@Spazmatic2000 indeed 🤦♂️
@@Spazmatic2000 that’s what I noticed, it doesn’t seem like many people caught it. They probably didn’t watch till the end. Can’t wait to see how that goes!
I find using an old nicad charger set to match the voltage of whatever cell count the lithium battery is to get it to 3.6v a cell usually works to revive them
Yup that is the first step, the next one is resetting the fet gate array in the BMS to get it to accept a normal charge.
The metal plates are clearly used and seen in the video next to the original proof-of-concept battery. New metal straps are also used.
Nice to see Rich doing actual work and not bs with Steven
Steven built a house in a van and all the custom projects? They did work too
He signs everyone’s paycheques
jesus the little bit of smoke coming off the battery scared me 17:56
That ending was cold 🥶 I see you RICH! 😂
Tavarish needs a bargain battery I heard. You and Samcrac need to help him dig out of the F1 money pit! Rich, I honestly learned alot from this video. Nicely done.
I've done the same battery charging trick, you need need more volts on the good battery, can use a booster pack if it puts out enough
Love the educational content.
This was a great video and very impressive! Now I just need to go out to my McLaren and fix my bad battery… Oh wait! Neither I, nor anyone I knows owns a McLaren… It is crazy to see how relatively simple the repair on something like that is though!!!
I never knew those batteries had capri suns in them 👍🏽
Just don't poke a straw in them
If you float too much amps through the steel, you might have issues how do you stainless steel and possibly band a piece of copper tubing flat folded over it like a bushing drill holes through it and use the nuts to compress the copper were most electricity flows through it, and not the bolt
Rich willing to risk it all to bring us that awesome content 👏
Crazy that water can do that to a battery and then use it for production.
Will Stevon ever return? 😢
The best battery charging trick is to avoid buying a smart charger and just be smart enough to avoid swinging the cables around with it powered up
Classiest reveal video ever. It just needs Steveon and Leenda.❤
where is Stevon? He was in that McLaren video...
Freddy sends Rich a burned memory, and Rich sends Freddy a future burning memory. The bromance is awesome.
Not sure uncle rich, but I think this might be a proof of concept….😂
RIch, your content makes me have an appreciation for some of the new engineering. I think it's overkill sometimes and often over priced, but I can appreciate their efforts. I don't pay much for things I don't know how they work. This is great content to appreciate and not just ignore newer and more expensive crap!
A mclaren? We want real content with Stevon
Is that 720S in Glacier White? I love that colour on that car.
Of course it ended that way! ❤uncle Rich!
A123 actually made the pouch cell battery for the chevy spark also. It actually was a great setup too.
Unfortunately I was a stockholder back when A123 made the batteries for Fiskar. When they caught fire, it was all over for both. Sad times.
